John W. Bruner Jr.

John W. Bruner Jr., 76, of 210 Elm St., Bettsville, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Sandusky County from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Bettsville to Willard and Grace (Fultz) Bruner.

Surviving are: a sister, Olive Mae Kissling of Tiffin; close friends Mervin and Jean Eingle of Carey, Kevin Eingle of Lansing, Mich., Jill Martin of Upper Sandusky and Tracie Baldridge of Carey; nieces Sharon of Georgia, Karen and Linda, both of Colorado, and Sandra of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Alice Bland.

Mr. Bruner was a graduate of Bettsville High School and a WW II Navy veteran. He retired from Fry Foods where he worked as a dock loader.

He was a member of the VFW in Carey and Upper Sandusky.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Union cemetery in Old Fort, with the Rev. John Halstead officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care.

The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.

Duane C. Coppus

Duane C. Coppus, 78, of S. Twp. Rd. 59, Fostoria, died 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Independence House, Fostoria.

He was born June 16, 1924, in Seneca County, to Harold and Gertrude (Jordan) Coppus. On June 29, 1947, he married Carol "Joyce" Good, in Fostoria, at St. John's United Church of Christ. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a son, Stephen C. Coppus of Fostoria; three brothers, Harold and Donavon Coppus, both of Fostoria and James Coppus of Tiffin; two sisters, Karen Girona of LaBelle, Fla. and Betty Libby of Battlecreek, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kristine C. Good.

Mr. Coppus retired in 2001 as a self-employed farmer. He was a 1942 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon High School. Mr. Coppus was a 24 year 4-H advisor, Charter member of Bascom Lion's Club, past Master of Loudon Center Grange, Hopewell-Loudon School Board member for 14 years, former co-owner of Loudon Meadows Golf Course and Coral Farms in Florida. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fostoria.

Mr. Coppus was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne and Glider Division during WW II.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Fostoria, with the Rev. Jim Michaels officiating. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery, near Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seneca County Cancer Association or St. John's United Church of Christ.

Ruth H. Billock

Ruth H. Billock, 73, formerly of 551 West St., Carey, died 3:01 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Eaglewood Care Center in Carey.

She was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Wyandot County, to Joseph and Irene (Lenhart) Billock.

Surviving are: three brothers, Robert of Carey, Dean of Presque Isle, Mich., Linus of Carey; a sister, Lauretta Phillips of Carey.

Funeral will be private and there will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Carey.

Mary M. Dillon

Mary M. Dillon, 84, formerly of N. Countyline St., Fostoria, died 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Winebrenner Care Center, Findlay.

She was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Stubenville, Ohio, to Eustachio and Teresa (Marini) Smarrella. On June 28, 2947, she married Ellsworth "Slim" Dillon, in New Mexico.

Surviving are: two sons, John A. Dillon of Tiffin and David L. Dillon of Fostoria; three daughters, Mrs. Nan (Bud) Boone of Arcadia, Susan J. Taflinger of Harrisburg, N. C., Mrs. Kathy (Will) Rogers of Westerville; three brothers, Tony Smarrella of Houston, Texas, Stephen Smarrella of Mingo Junction, Eugene Smarrella of Weirton, W. Va.; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; a daughter, Mary Ellen Dillon; three brothers, John, Nick and Joe Smarrella and a grandchild.

Mrs. Dillon retired in 1978, after 25 years as a grocery clerk for Nyes Food Giant. She was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria, with the Rev. Daniel Ring officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Merle F. Wickard

Merle F. Wickard, 66, of 746 Stinchcomb Dr., Fostoria, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at St. Catherine Nursing Home.

He was born May 12, 1936, in Wood County, to Ray and Bessie (Root) Wickard. He married Betty Hopkins and they divorced. He then married Emma (Boes) Wickard. They divorced, but she continued on as care-giver.

Surviving are: Care-giver, Emma Wickard; six daughters, Joyce Florey of Lima, Janet Wickard of Portage, Debbie Hahn of Bloomdale, Donna Telles of Portage, June Sheeks of Weston and Mary Johnson of Toledo; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Snyder Funeral Home, Holgate.

Joyce E. Turner

Joyce E. Turner, 69, of 1679 Somerlot-Hoffman Road West, Marion, formerly of 784 Harding Rd., Marion, died 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1932, in Fremont, to Milton Henry and Lucille Iola (Paul) Trick. On March 2, 1957, she married Robin T. Turner at First Lutheran Church in Tiffin. He survives in Marion.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Catherine (Douglas) Shrimplin of Marion and Mrs. Christine (Michael A.) Pirik of Columbus; three grandchildren, Michael A. Pirik, Jr., Robin Marie Pirik and Mary JoAnne Pirik, all of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jean Kempshall Thomas.

Mrs. Turner was a farm manager and retired teacher. She was past Worthy Matron Tiffin Chapter 189 O.E.S.; White Shrine, Marion, Ohio; past Guardian Jobs Daughters Bethel 2, in Marion, Ohio. She was a 1950 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and a 1954 graduate of Heidelberg College.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Marion Country Club, Marion, with the Monsignor Romano Ciotola officiating. Cremains will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the country club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in care of Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

George W. Scranton Jr.

George W. Scranton Jr., 84 of Mulberry st., Clyde, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at St. Francis Rehabilitation Hospital.

He was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Michigan, to George W. and Edna Grace (Ingrahm) Scranton. On Dec. 29, 1946, he married Esther Lucille (Weichel) Scranton. She survives in Clyde.

Other survivors include: a daughter Christine Scranton of Clyde; a granddaughter; a brother, LaVerne Scranton of Buckeye Lake; a sister, Sue Schwartz of Fremont.

Mr. Scranton was a veteran serving in the Army Air Corp, 110th Bomb Squadron.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde and from 12:30 until the service on Saturday at the church.

Earl K. McFarland

Earl K. McFarland, 77, of Roth Court, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

He was born July 30, 1925, in Lebanon, Va., to Glen and Bessie (Robinson) McFarland. On June 9, 1944, he married Joann (MIller) McFarland. She survives in Clyde.

Other survivors include: a son, Glen McFarland of Bellevue; a daughter, Judy Trail of Shelton, Wash.; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a brother, Douglas McFarland of Lancaster and a sister, Doris Kelly of Florida.

Mr. McFarland was a WW II U.S. Army veteran.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Providence Baptist Church in Bellevue. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Bellevue.

Susie E. Shaffer

Susie E. Shaffer, 110, formerly of Thackery, (Urbana, Ohio), passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin, where she had resided since 1997.

Susie was born April 29, 1892, in Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of the late John Hamilton Stevens and Ruth (Baker) Stevens.

She was a 1910 graduate of Thackery High School, a charter member of the Champaign County Garden Club and the Champaign County Homemakers Chorus. Her flower gardens were her pride and were admired by everyone who saw them. She was formerly a member of the Zerkle Lutheran Church, Thackery, where she served as organist and more recently was a member of the Covenant Lutheran Church, Saint Paris.

Survivors include: two daughters, Margaret Shaffer and Kathleen (Chris) Phares, both of Tiffin; two grandsons, Richard (Linda) Phares of Tiffin and Robert Phares of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Sean and Brent Phares, both of Columbus and Brian Phares and Megan Phares, both of Tiffin. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Joseph A. Shaffer, who she married May 29, 1913, and preceded her in death on March 31, 1969; and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the Covenant Lutheran Church, corner of W. Main and Church Streets in Saint Paris, Ohio. The Rev. Gerald Anderson, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Terre Haute cemetery, Urbana.

Friends may call at the church from noon until time of the service Monday, Oct. 7.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Covenant Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 614, Saint Paris, Ohio 43072 or to the Autumnwood Care Center, 670 E. SR 18, Tiffin, Ohio 44883.

Marian J. Benlein

Marian J. Benlein, 76, of Tiffin, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin, where she had been a resident for the last 4 1/2 years.

She was born in Toledo July 2, 1926, to Elmer and Hazel (Tebeau) Boltz. A graduate of Waite High School, Toledo, she worked as a custodian for the Riverview Inn in Tiffin for many years, retiring in 1985.

On Nov. 20, 1970, she married Franklin "Butch" Benlein in Monroe, Mich. He survives. Also surviving are her son,, Lynn Mason of Arizona City, Ariz.; and daughters Emily Mason and Janice Williams, both of Fremont; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marian is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Doug mason; and a brother, Kenneth Boltz.

Graveside services at Seneca Memory Gardens will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Stephen Seibel, associate pastor of St John's Lutheran Church, Fremont, will officiate.

Memorials have been requested to go the Tiffin-Seneca County Alzheimer's Support Group, P.O. Box 1044, Tiffin, Ohio 44883.

Arrangements were made through the Nopper-Veh Funeral Home, Gibsonburg.

Mary M. Dillon

Bonnie Ellen Lang

Bonnie Ellen Lang, 43, of 27 Short St., Tiffin, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 in Firelands Hospital. She was born Nov. 4, 1958 to the late Robert H. Lang and Ellen (Drake) Lang, who survives in Tiffin.

Also surviving include: a daughter, Jessica E. Lang of Tiffin; a brother Robert J. Lang of Texas; two sisters, Connie Lang and Sandy Hurt, both of Tiffin.

The services are private, and there are no visitation hours.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

James M. Craven

James M. Craven, retired chief master sergeant, a man of pride and honor, passed away Sept. 16, 2002, in Tucson, Ariz.

Born in Ridgway, Pa., July 13, 1931, James served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring in 1974, he worked at Jimmy RV and Lear Jet.

James dedicated his life to his wife of 47 years, Mary, and his five children. He was preceded in death by his son, John A. Craven, and parents Merrill and Orma Craven.

Surviving are: his wife, Mary; children, James M. (Cathy), Joseph L. (Jaye), Kevin L., and Kathy A. Dunleavy (Mike); his brothers, Gilbert and Ronald Craven; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services are pending.

Dad-Papa, We love you so very much, you'll always be in our hearts.
