Robert A. Faris

Robert A. Faris, devoted husband, supportive dad, awesome grandpa and a truly great friend to many, age 70, of Grove City, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 24, 1932, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the son of the late Ruby and Allen Hazelwood Faris. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Bowen) Faris.

Other survivors include: a son and daughter, Bruce (Juli) Faris of Grove City and Sharon Faris of Raleigh, N.C.; and grandchildren, West and Melissa. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Allen and Bill.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School. Following high school, he served our country in the United States Air Force then worked for the Goodyear Uranium Enrichment Plant. He retired from the Boy Scouts of America after 61 years of service, having worked in professional leadership positions for councils in Portsmouth, Ohio; Bartlesville, Okla.; Piqua, Tiffin and Grove City, Ohio; Rockford, Ill.; and Charlotte, N.C.

He loved the OSU Buckeyes and was able to rejoice in their National Championship football season. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, West and Melissa, sitting on his deck and traveling with his wonderful friends to a variety of places. Most importantly, he was a generous, loving person and loyal friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Miller Funeral Home, 2697 Columbus St., Grove City, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday. with Chaplain Steve Rice officiating. A private inurnment will occur at a later date.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the beautiful caregivers of the James Cancer Hospital for their love and support during the last year and to his angels of mercy, Betty, his wife, and Leslie, his home care nurse.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts of America, Simon Kenton Council, 1901 E. Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, OH 43229 or the Hospice at Riverside and Grant-Kobacker House, 3595 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43214.

Gerald L. Eberly

Gerald L. Eberly, 91, of 30 Hollister St., Monroeville, died Tuesday morning, March 18, 2003, in the Willard Healthcare Center, following a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Monroeville. He was employed as a carpenter, working for Local Union 940, Sandusky, prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monroeville.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Rosalia "Sally" Didion; a daughter, Arlene Gates of Willard; a son, William G. Eberly of Tiffin; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a great-great-grandson; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rose (Tyler) Eberly; three sisters, Carolyn Conney, Corrine Mack Crawford and Helen Conney; a brother, Carl Eberly; and a granddaughter.

Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Jump and Pfeil Funeral Home, 109 Monroe St., Monroeville, where Christian Wake services will be at 8:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel St., Monroeville, with the Rev. Kenneth J. Lill officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Monroeville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph School Endowment Fund, 79 Chapel St., Monroeville, OH 44847.

James Gordon Bemis

James Gordon Bemis, 77, of Fostoria, died at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in the Independence House, Fostoria.

He was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Haskins, Ohio, to the late Gordon and Bessie (Cramer) Bemis. On July 27, 1947, in Benton Ridge, he married Carolyn Ruth Smith, who survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Ron (Linda) Amrine and Mrs. Michael (Jennie) Bowe, both of Risingsun, and Mrs. Charles (Beth) Baker of Kansas, Ohio; seven grandchildren; a step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Bemis of Fostoria.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Alice R. Hirsch

Alice R. Hirsch, 91, of 725 Columbus Ave., Fostoria, died at 10:20 a.m. in Good Shepherd Home in Fostoria.

She was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Augusta, Ohio, to the late William H. and Frances V. (Crammer) Lewallen. On Dec. 22, 1928, she married John William Hirsch. He preceded her in death July 3, 1954.

Surviving are: two sons, William Hirsch of Okala, Fla., and Robert L. Hirsch of Fostoria; three daughters, Juanita Bisel of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, Virginia Rookstool of Kansas City and Dorothy Higgins of Fostoria; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William R. McMurtrie

William R. McMurtrie, 82, of Sandusky CR 183, Clyde, died at his residence Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

He was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Fremont, to the late Harry E. and Helen (Prine) McMurtrie. On Nov. 25, 1950, he married Nestle L. "Sue" McMurtrie. She survives.

Also surviving are: five sons, LeMar Frederick of Lampertville, Mich., Don D. Frederick of Holt, Mich., Monty Frederick of Corasegold, Calif., Larry Frederick of Auburndale, Fla., and Jeffrey McMurtrie of Kirtland; and a daughter, Carol Gill of Clyde.

Mr. McMurtrie was a disabled American veteran of World War II Army Air Corps.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lois Wilkins

Lois Wilkins, 72, of 1170 W. Mansfield St., Bucyrus, died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Heartland of Bucyrus.

She was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Crawford County, to the late George and Mary (Pfleiderer) Schieber. She married James F. Wilkins, who preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant View cemetery in Sycamore.

The will be no visitation.

The Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Colby Paul Long

Colby Paul Long, 8 months, of Hamer Street, Clyde, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Toledo Children's Hospital.

Surviving are his parents, Raymond and Jennifer (Smetzler) Long of Clyde; grandparents, Paul and Barbara Smetzler and Gary and Cathy Long, all of Clyde; great-grandmothers, Beverly Connor of Clyde and Mary Long of Vickery; and two brothers, Kade and Conner Long.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home. Burial will be in McPherson cemetery in Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Joseph T. Simmons Jr.

Joseph T. Simmons, Jr., 82, of Tiffin, died in the Emergency Room of Tiffin Mercy Hospital on Wednesday, March 19, 2003. He was born to the late Joseph T. and Eleanor (Cornelias) Simmons. On June 20, 1942 he married Yvonne Avalon Stover in St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, and she survives.

Also surviving include: a daughter, Barbara Ann Simmons of Tiffin; a son, Thomas Joseph Simmons of Tiffin; a brother, Robert Simmons of Tiffin; two grandchildren, Mrs. Kim Agerter, and Wade Breidenbach, both of Tiffin; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Joseph Agerter, Sara Nichole Agerter, Hunter Crede Breidenbach, and Erikka Breidenbach.

Preceded in death were: a sister, Rosemarie Picciuto, and a brother, Leonard Simmons.

Mr. Simmons was a Veteran serving in the U.S. Army as a corporal from 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific, during WW II. He worked at the American Standard for forty years as a sprayer, he retired in 1980. His memberships included: St. Mary Catholic Church, life member Tiffin Eagles #402, a basketball referee in the Tiffin Association for twenty years; and 15 years in the little league and industrial league. He was the Batting Champion of Tiffin in 1950. A loving husband, father and he loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. He liked to watch Notre Dame basketball and football on TV. He also loved to dance.

The Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003 in St. Joseph Church with Rev. Frank Murd officiating. Burial will be St. Mary Catholic cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, prior to the services. Military Graveside Services to be conducted by the United Veterans Council. A Rosary will be prayed at the church .The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association-Seneca County Unit and/or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Edward G. Behm

Edward G. Behm, 75, 2944 S. SR 53, Tiffin, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

He was born March 3, 1928, in Tiffin, to the late William and Clara (McConnell) Behm. His wife, La Donna (Boes) Behm, whom he married Nov. 27, 1948, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, died April 28, 1997.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Borkosky of Fostoria; a son, Dennis L. (Janel) Behm of Tiffin; five grandchildren, Paula Borkosky of Fostoria, Beth Borkosky of San Antonio, Texas and Greg, Patrick and Kelly Behm, all of Findlay; a brother, William Behm of Tiffin; and a sister, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Parker of McCutchenville,.

A sister, Molly Welter, is deceased.

A 1947 Calvert High School graduate, Mr. Behm was a maintenance technician for Decker Furniture and former owner of Golden Acre Turkey Farm. An avid fisherman and boater, he was a member of Sandusky River Coon Hunters Association and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. James K. Say officiating. The rosary will be prayed at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today, March 21, in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care or a charity of the donor's choice.

Sanford Dearth

Sanford Dearth Jr., 76, of 139 W. Drew Lane, Clyde, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his residence.

He was born May 7, 1926, in Upper Sandusky to the late Sanford and Betty (Rhoades) Dearth. He married Janice (Brink) Dearth in Fremont Feb. 14, 1947. She survives.

Also surviving are: three sons, Michael Dearth and Timothy Dearth, both of Clyde, and Thomas Dearth of Bellevue; a daughter, Betty Jo Runion of Republic; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dearth was a U.S. Navy veteran serving 1944-1946.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Foos-Klein Funeral Home in Clyde. Burial will be in McPherson cemetery in Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Richard Sendelbach

Richard Sendelbach, 80, of 4260 W. Co. Rd. 38, Tiffin, died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the Eaglewood Care Center, Carey. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Shirley E. Stover

Shirley E. Stover, 76, of Tiffin, died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the home of her son. Visitation will be at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where additional arrangements are pending.

Edward G. Behm

Edward G. Behm, 75, Tiffin, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

Arrangements are pending at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Lewis W. Hertzer

Lewis W. Hertzer, 79, of Fairhaven Home in Upper Sandusky, died at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, in Upper Sandusky.

Arrangements are pending at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Bertha V. Steve

Bertha V. Steve, 84, of Fostoria, died at 11:13 A.M., Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fla.

Arrangements are pending at Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Beverly Hiestand

Beverly Hiestand, 62, of North Canton, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at home.

She was born in Fort Seneca Jan. 1, 1940, to the late Chester and Flossie (Pressler) Suffecool.

A graduate of Old Fort High School and the Ohio State University, she was a teacher from The Academy Pre-School with 11 years of service. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Suffecool.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Frank; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Elizabeth (Easton) Hiestand of Bloomington, Ind.; daughter Patricia Hiestand of the home; granddaughter Alexandra; brother Edward Suffecool of Fremont.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith United Methodist with the Revs. Tom Douce and Dr. Larry Morrison officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Pleasant Union cemetery in Old Fort.

Friends will be received at Karlo and Sons Funeral Home in North Canton 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, one hour prior to the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 300 9th St. NW, North Canton, OH 44720, or to the American Cancer Society, 925 South Main Street, North Canton, OH 44720.

Leonard A. 'Pelee' Burr

Leonard Arthur "Pelee" Burr, 78, of Sunset Dr., Bellevue, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Firelands Community Hospital in Sandusky.

He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Sandusky, to the late Arthur and Hazel K. (Lewis) Burr. On Aug. 24, 1946, he married Margaret (Rohrbacher) Burr. She survives.

Also surviving are: three daughters, Carolyn Hartzell of Norwalk, Donna Robinson of Bellevue and Barbara Mills of Sandusky; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Auxter Funeral Home in Bellevue. Burial will be in Castalia cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert W. Wertz

Robert W. Wertz, 91, of Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin, died at 8:55 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1911, in Tiffin, to the late William C. and Florence W. (Gruber) Wertz. On June 6, 1937, he married Florence W. (Hausenfleck) Wertz in Tiffin. She survives.

Also surviving are: three sons, Robert W. Wertz of Peach Tree City, Ga., James R. Wertz of Tiffin and Eugene R. Wertz of Cupertino, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Pauline) R. Roberts of Tiffin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William E. Wertz and Harold V. Wertz.

Mr. Wertz was a life-long resident of Tiffin and worked as a garage door mechanic. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Tiffin Lodge 77 Free and Accepted Masons; Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo; Tiffin Shrine, Zenobia Shrine.

There will be no services nor visitation at this time.

Memorial contributions may be made to Masonic Lodge and or the Shriners.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
