Alice Fruth
Former rural Carey resident

Alice Fruth, 85, formerly of rural Carey, most recently of Traditions at MillRun, Columbus, died at 7:20 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at her residence. She was born Jan. 19, 1913, to Grover and Nora (Patton) Arnett in Saylersville, KY. On Feb. 25, 1934, she married Oscar W. Fruth in Church of the Bretheren at Fostoria; he died Oct. 19, 1995.

Survivors include: a son, Oscar Fruth Jr. of Middletown, OH; six daughters, Mrs. Virgil (Martha) Kirkpatrick of Nairobi, Kenya, Mrs. Harry (Catherine) Taylor of Lexington, KY; Mrs. Howard (Barbara) Clayton of Gas City, IN, Dr. Beryl Fruth of Columbus, Mrs. Dan (Rebecca) Riemenschneider of Indianapolis, and Mrs. LaMar (Rachel) Carlson of Oakmont, PA; a brother, Ed Arnett of McComb; four sisters, Mrs. Justine Bucci of Wellsboro, PA, Mrs. Betty Lou Faulkner of Cullman, AL, Ms. Marilyn Arnett of Findlay; Mrs. Etta Thomas of Bellvue; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; a brother, Thomas Arnett; and three sisters, Ruth Brown, Virginia Koepfer, and Eula Thomas.

Mrs. Fruth was a 1932 graduate of Vanlue High School. She was a homemaker and retired from farming in Big Spring Twp. in Seneca County, and remained an avid gardner. Her memberships included the Oak Grove Church of the Bretheren of Alvada, and the Gideon International Auxiliary.

The Rev. Daniel Riemenschneider will officiate the 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7, service at the West Independence United Methodist Church in West Independence, OH. Burial will be at Hickory Grove cemetery, Alvada.

Visitation hours are 6-9 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home. And a one-hour visitation at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Alice Fruth Memorial Fund: For African Widows and Orphan Children c/o Rebecca Riemenschneider, 1907 Maradona Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana 46214.

Irene M. Broad
Clyde resident

Irene M. Broad, 85, of Duane St., Clyde, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at her residence. She was born March 1, 1913, in New London, Iowa, to James and Matie "Minnie" (Peppmeier) Westerbeck, both deceased. On June 7, 1934, she married James Broad; he died Dec. 18, 1994.

Surviving include: a son, Phillip Broad of Findlay; four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Sylvia) Smith of Garden Grove, CA, Mrs. Michael (Karen) Brandon of Green Springs, Mrs. Dan (Janis) Highley of Battleground, WA, and Mrs. Richard (Mary Jo) Gill of Clyde; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Kauzlarich, Fern Flanigan, and Helen Wilkinson.

Mrs. Broad graduated from Streator High School in Streator, IL. She was a resident of Clyde since 1934, a member of the First Church of Christ, Fremont, active in the church's women's group called Shining Lights, and a member of Piece Makers Quilting Group. She enjoyed cooking, baking and quilting for family and friends.

The Rev. Brian Hollingsworth will officiate the 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 7, service at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Burial will be at McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Sandusky County Hospice.

Mary Ann Niederkohr
Tiffin resident's sister

Mary Ann Niederkohr, 83, of 2024 Greendale Ave., Findlay, died at her residence at 3:40 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998. She was born June 21, 1915, to Frank J. and Matilda J. (Welter) Kirian, both deceased. On July 30, 1938, she married Paul C. Niederkohr in St. Nicholas Church in Frenchtown, OH; he died March 17, 1991.

Survivors include: a son, Jerry H. Niederkohr of Findlay; a daughter, Mrs. Roy (Joyce Ann) Paniaqua of Findlay; a brother, Emil Kirian of Tiffin; and two grandsons, John and Joseph Paniaqua.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Niederkohr was a homemaker and member of the St. Michael Parish, Findlay, and the Rosary Altar Society of the Parish.

The Rev. Arthur Young will officiate the 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery, Carey.

Visitation hours are from 6-9 p.m., tonight at the Strombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey. A Rosary Service will be held at 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the St. Francis Home for the Aged, c/o the funeral home.

Laurel (Snyder) Dillon
Former Tiffin resident

Laurel (Snyder) Dillon, 87, of Tavares, FL, formerly of Tiffin, who died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 in Florida will be remembered at a Memorial Service 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be at Green Springs cemetery. Visitation hours are scheduled for one-half hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children and Burns Institutes.

Thelma Aileen Burson
Former Fostoria resident

Thelma Aileen Burson, 99, formerly of 968 S. ST. RT. 587, Fostoria, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at St. Francis Health Care Center, Green Springs, OH. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Foos & Son Funeral Home at a later date.

Robert E. Baumgartner
Retired C&O freight agent

Robert E. Baumgartner, 77, of 4677 CH 35, Sycamore, died at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.

He was born in Marion County Oct. 28, 1921, to Donald and Mary (Osborn) Baumgartner. On July 20, 1963, he married Annabell (Hufford) Dillon. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, James R. Baumgartner and Richard H. Dillon, both of rural Sycamore; a granddaughter, Ashley Ann Baumgartner; and two nephews.

A brother, Dale Baumgartner, is deceased.

Mr. Baumgartner, a life member of American Legion Post 368, Prospect, retired as a freight agent from the C&O Railroad, where he had been employed for 43 years.

He also was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church and the following Masonic bodies: Enterprise Lodge 579 Free and Accepted Masons, Sycamore; McCutchen Chapter 96 RAM, of which he was high priest in 1967; Upper Sandusky Council 98 Royal and Select Masons; Marion Commandery 36; William Myers Chapter 196, McCutchenville; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo; and past DeMolay Dad of Upper Sandusky.

A 1939 graduate of Prospect High School, he also was a member of the Mohawk Historical Society. His hobbies included stamp collecting, books, fishing and golf.

Mr. Baumgartner served during World War II in the U.S. Navy.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Van Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Pleasent Ridge cemetery, Sycamore.

Masonic services will follow the memorial service at the funeral home Sunday.

Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Mohawk Community Library, Mohawk Historical Society or Enterprise Lodge 579 F&AM, Sycamore.

Helen Morris
Office clerk

Helen Morris, 64 of Fostoria, died at 2:37 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay. Arrangements are pending at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

David Lynn Hehr
Water department employee

David Lynn Hehr, 57, of 203 1/2 E. Crawford St., Upper Sandusky, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 30, 1998, in Upper Sandusky.

He was born in Bucyrus May 5, 1941, to the late Robert J. and Grace E. (Troup) Hehr.

Surviving are a son, Fred Hehr of Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Eric (Stacey) Gottfried of Upper Sandusky and Mrs. Kyle (Ann) Davidson of Nevada; three grandchildren; four brothers, Charles E. and Richard F. Hehr, both of Upper Sandusky, Robert Hehr Jr. of Manchester, Mich., and James W. Hehr of Columbus; and five sisters, Dorothy Mouser and Jane Robey, both of Upper Sandusky, Mrs. Walter (Rosalie) Lee of Fairfield Glades, Tenn, Rachel Schutt of Naples, Fla., and Mrs. Steve (Carol) Matteson of Kenton.

Mr. Hehr, a 1959 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, had been employed by the Upper Sandusky Water Department as a meter reader. He also worked part-timeat the Crawford Street Laundromat and Mr. T's News.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed watching sports.

The Rev. Jerry Elsholz will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Friday service in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation at the funeral home is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Mental Health Fund or Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.

Luther Boyd Jarrell
Retired administrative assistant

Luther Boyd Jarrell, 82, formerly of Upper Sandusky and Mt. Pleasant, Mich., died at 12:25 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in the Lutheran Retirement Village, Columbus.

He was born in Wadesboro, N.C., Oct. 21, 1916, to Sam Lisk and Rosland (Smith) Jarrell. He was first married to Phylis Huff, and they were divorced. His second wife, Nelda R. (Callihan) Jones Jarrell, whom he married June 4, 1966, in Fairborn, died Oct. 12, 1998.

Survivors include: two sons, William A. of New Albany and Gregory L. of Westerville; a stepson, Jeffery Jones of Riverview, Mich.; a daughter, Katherine Diviak of Dayton; two stepdaughters, Joyce Joan Dull of Clare, Mich., and Linda Davies of Greenwell Springs, La.; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A sister, Katherine Trautwein, is deceased.

Mr. Jarrell retired in 1972 from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton as an administrative assistant to the commanding general, after 32 years of service.

A World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served three years in India, he was a member of Bexley United Methodist Church, Bexley, John Stewart United Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky; Warpole Masonic Lodge 176, Upper Sandusky, and High Twelve Masonic Organization, Holms Beach, Fla., where he served as past president.

He was a former member and past president of Fairborn Lions Club.

Graveside memorial services in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Earse Mauler officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Gary D. Mahon
Former Willard resident

Gary D. Mahon, 41, of Norwalk, where he had resided for a year, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 1, 1998, at the home of a friend in North Fairfield.

He was born June 8, 1957, to the late Troy Mahon and Bobbie Jean (Pack) Jeffrey.

Survivors include: his stepfather, Donald Jeffrey of Mansfield; three sisters, Barbara Johnson and Loria Sorg, both of Norwalk, and Darlene Anderson of North Carolina; a brother, Troy Mahon of Findlay; and two nephews and a niece.

A sister, Carol Mahon, is deceased.

Mr. Mahon, a former employee of Midwest Industries in Willard, collected lighters.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Oakland cemetery, Shelby.

Memorials may be made to Donald Jeffrey, 1235 Harwood Ave., Mansfield, OH44906.

The Hinman-Tanner and Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, is in charge of arrangements.

Alfred L. Wilson Sr.
Retired truck driver

Alfred L. Wilson Sr., 76, of 234 W. Center St., Fostoria, was dead on arrival at noon Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Fostoria Community Hospital.

He was born in Marion March 3, 1922, to Joseph and Laura (Stickey) Wilson. His wife, Anna (Varganin) Wilson, is deceased.

Survivors include: four sons, Charles Wilson of Tiffin, Alfred Wilson Jr. of Bucyrus, Joseph Wilson of Old Fort and Timothy Wilson of Fostoria; three daughters, Joyce Wilson of Adrian, Mich., Mary Frances Wilson of New York and Laura Gillan of Warren; three grandchildren; and a sister.

Preceding him in death were a brother, Howard Wilson; and a sister.

A retired truck driver, Mr. Wilson was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Formerly of Bettsville, he had lived in Fostoria for several years.

There will be no services. Visitation for the family will be private. The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clara Louise Zuern
Former Wright Patterson secretary

Clara Louise Zuern, 88, 2320 W. Seneca CR 6, died at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in St. Catherine's Care Center of Tiffin.

She was born Feb. 3, 1910, in Seneca County, to John C. and Lydia (Staib) Zuern.

Survivors include: two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Florence) Partridge of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Dewey (Elsie) Spoon of Findlay; a niece, Marjorie Clavey of Elgin; a nephew Norman Partridge of Florida; four grand nephews, a grand niece and a great-grand niece.

Two sisters, Gertrude Carmen and Martha Zuern, are deceased.

Miss Zuern, a 1927 Columbian High School graduate, attended Tiffin University. She was employed as a secretary at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and as an insurance agent and secretary in Columbus.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and its Friendship Circle, the Professional Secretaries International, Insurance Women of Columbus and Franklin Mint Collector's Society, where she was a charter member.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn cemetery, with the Rev. David Culp officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Richard L. Swartz
S&S Variety retired owner

Richard L. Swartz, 71, 190 St. Francis Ave., died at 7:35 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in St. Francis Home.

He was born in Tiffin, Aug. 8, 1927, to Jesse and Edna (Karcher) Swartz. His wife, Patricia J. (Aubry) Swartz, whom he married Nov. 27, 1947, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, survives.

Other survivors include: six children, Richard Lee and Greg Swartz, both of Tiffin, Mrs. Joseph (Deborah DeRose of Huron, Stephen Swartz of Tiffin, Mrs. Gary (Pam) Smith of Westerville, and Scott Swartz, also of Tiffin; two brothers, Edward Swartz of Cygnet and Fred Swartz of Tiffin; a sister, Betty Swartz of Findlay; a half-sister, Shirley Thacher of Tiffin; 11 grandsons and three granddaughters.

Mr. Swartz, the retired owner of S & S Variety Beverage, was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

A past Calvert High School Booster president, he also was a member of Moose Lodge 846, Alcoholics Anonymous, where he was a 45 year member; and the Tiffin Lions Club, where he served as president 1980-81. He also received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1993.

A funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church will be 10 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Richard Dunn and the Rev. Frank Murd as co-celebrants. The Rosary will be recited at the church at 9:45 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

Visitation at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a Wake service will be at 8:45 p.m. and Lions Club members will meet in body at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church, Tiffin Lions Club or St. Francis Standing Lift Fund.
