Gertrude Y. Hessick, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Elmwood Care Center, Sandusky County, Green Springs, where she resided. Arrangements are pending at the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs.

Jack Reber Edwards
Edwards Dry Cleaners owner/operator

Jack Reber Edwards, 83, died at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at his home at 1349 South Drive, Fostoria.

He was born in Fostoria, Sept. 30, 1914, to Jack and Clara (Altman) Edwards Sr. On Dec. 24, 1934, in Fostoria, he married Nina O. Swihart. She survives in Fostoria.

Survivors also include: two daughters, Mrs. Stanley (Judy) Brahier of Defiance and Mrs. Jim (Jacqueline) Hauser of Sandusky; five grandchildren, three step grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Victor (Jeanne) Reed of Las Vegas, Nev.

A lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, Mr. Edwards owned and operated Edwards Dry Cleaners in Fostoria for 50 years, retiring in 1973.

He also was a member of Fostoria Elks Lodge 935, where he served as past exalted ruler; the Jack Wainwright Band, which gained national recognition; and served as a volunteer firefighter with the Fostoria Fire Department 1939-45.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria Chapel, with the Rev. R. Edson Reed officiating. Interment will be in WestIndependence cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, where Elks Lodge services will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.

Alexander M. 'Alex' Howard
Retired Kroger manager

Alexander M. "Alex" Howard, 80, of 803 S. Main St., Fostoria, died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in Fostoria Community Hospital.

He was born in Fostoria, Oct. 23, 1917, to Fred R. and Fayette (Ferwalt) Howard. On Nov. 10, 1941, in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, he married Betty F. Wagner. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: two sons, Gary R. Howard of Silver Lake, Ohio, and Frederick R. Howard of Fostoria; four daughters, Lynda K. Abell, Gail M. Haaser, Arlene Dee Steve and Dawn A. Morgart, all of Fostoria; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Howard of Fremont; and four sisters, Mary Kintz and Madonna Roberts, both of Fostoria, Patricia Wolfarth of Tucson, Ariz., and Margaret Bruce of Columbus.

A sister, Beatrice Ruehle, is deceased.

Mr. Howard, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, retired in 1980 as manager from the Kroger Store in Fostoria, where he had worked for 44 years.

He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.

A funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where the Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fostoria AMVETS, VFW and American Legion.

Visitation at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rosary recited at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Betty E. Rice
Republic native

Betty E. Rice, 74, of Elyria, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in the New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a long illness.

She was born in Republic to the late John and Olivia Wagner and had lived in Elyria since 1959.

Surviving are her husband of 25 years, James H. Rice; a son, Graig A. Nolder of Tallahassee, Fla.; a special friend (considered a daughter), Polly Markel of Sante Fe, Tenn.; a brother, Wallace O. Wagner of Huntsville, Ala., and many nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Allen B. and Leon A. Wagner, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Rice, a member of St. Agnes Church, Elyria, and the VFW Post 1079 Auxiliary, enjoyed crafts.

The Rev. Michael Ausperk, pastor of St. Agnes Church, will officiate at the 10 a.m. Wednesday service in the Laubenthal-DeCarlo Funeral Home, 257 Washington Ave., Elyria. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Tiffin.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.

U S Flagg
Retired Standard Oil Co. distributor

U S Flagg, 89, of Chestnut Street, Kansas, Ohio, died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in the Quality Care Center, Fremont.

He was born March 17, 1909, in Norwalk, to Leonard P. and Malinda E. (Shupe) Flagg. His wife, Zenith V. (Prenzlin) Flagg, whom he married June 10, 1929, in Norwalk, preceded him in death Jan. 4, 1993.

Survivors include: two sons, Martin D. Flagg of Kansas and Daniel D. Flagg of Fostoria; a daughter, Mrs. Duff (Shirley) Robbins of Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A brother, Clarence Flagg; and four sisters, Olive Shultz, Leona Benson, Alma Michaels and Deliah Flagg, also are deceased.

Mr. Flagg, who attended Kansas United Methodist Church, retired March 17, 1972, as a petroleum products distributor in the Kansas area, from the Standard Oil Company, where he had worked for 34 years.

Services in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Ivan L. Schwenn officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, near Arcadia.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Kansas United Methodist Church or Fremont Hospice Care.

Margaret M. Whipple
Republic resident

Margaret M. Whipple, 80, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at her home at 207 N. Kilbourne St., Republic, following a short illness. Arrangements are pending at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home.

William A. Claus, Sr.
Area resident

William A. Claus, Sr., 79, of Fairhome Ave., Clyde, died at the Fremont Memorial Hospital Wednesday, August 19, 1998. He was born in Bellevue to William E. and Veronica (Wynbissinger) Claus. On April 6, 1946, he married Mabele "Mae" Nycum, and she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, William A. Claus, Jr. of Clyde, and Thomas A. Claus of Tiffin; a sister, Isabelle Smith of Reed Twp.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Claus was a Bellevue High School graduate of 1936, he worked in the lab at the Clyde Sewage Treatment Plant and retired in 1980 after 16 years. Mr. Claus was a WW II veteran in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Chapel of Tiffin.

The Rev. Thomas A. Claus will officiate the 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 service at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 6-8 p.m., tonight at the funeral home.

Military graveside services will be provided by the Clyde VFW and Clyde American Legion.

Keith B. Roberts
Former area resident

Keith B. Roberts, 46, of 21st St., Toledo, died at 3:49 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the St. Vincents Medical Center, Toledo. He was born Nov. 24, 1951, in Bellefontaine, Ohio to Compton and Patricia (LyBurtus) Roberts; both are deceased.

Surviving are: his stepfather, Robert L. Jones Sr. of Fostoria; two sons, Keith Roberts Jr. of Spokane, Wa., and Andre Roberts of Perrysburg; a daughter, Tarina Roberts of Fremont; a brother, Robert L. Jones Jr. of Fostoria; two sisters, Mrs. Otis (Robin) Johnson of Bellefontaine, and Mrs. Curtis (Lorraine) Banks of Va.; and a grandchild.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Ricardo and David Roberts.

Mr. Roberts was a member of the New Life Church in Bellefontaine.

The Pastor Robin Ricks will officiate the 2 p.m., Saturday, August 22, 1998, graveside service at Fountain cemetery, Fostoria. There will be no visitation. The Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary E. Hossler
Lifetime Tiffin resident

Mary E. Hossler, 78, 1822 S. CR 19, died Monday, Aug. 19, 1998, In St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

She was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Tiffin to Karl and Leona (Delaplane) Norris. She was a lifetime resident of Tiffin.

She was married Nov. 25, 1939, in Tiffin to Harold K. Hossler. He is deceased.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Sharon L.) Arnett of Beavercreek and Jane E. Hossler of Tiffin; two grandchildren, Katherine M. and David S. Arnett, both of Dayton.

Two brothers, Charles and Robert Norris, are deceased.

Mrs. Hossler, a homemaker, was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and several other local organizations.

She was a 1938 graduate of Columbian High School.

Private services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. The Rev. William H. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Friends may call an hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, the Heart Fund, the Diabetes Association or the Greenlawn Cemtery Association.

Helen G. Chamberlain Beamer
Retired occupational therapist

Helen G. Chamberlain Beamer, 84, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in Autumnwood Care Center, where she had resided since May 1, 1994.

She was born in Tiffin, Sept. 11, 1913, to Scudder and Doris (Harvey) Chamberlain. On Oct. 24, 1933, in Tiffin, she married Harold C. Beamer. He preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1980.

Surviving are: two sons, Jerry Wm. Beamer of rural Fremont and John M. Beamer of Newport News, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Alfred (Norma) Berry of Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard H. Chamberlain of Flournoy, Calif. and Robert L. Chamberlain of Anchorage, Alaska.

Mrs. Beamer, a member of Tiffin Chapter 189 Order of Eastern Star and Dendenrah Court 10, retired as an occupational therapist from the former Tiffin State Hospital, after 19 years of emplyment.

Graveside services in Fairmont cemetery will be 10 a.m. Saturday, with Dr. Arthur Geyh officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Turner Engle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Autumnwood Volunteers.

Mable Wallace
Fostoria homemaker

Mable Wallace, 75, of 1076 Apt. A., Carrie Lane, Fostoria, died in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay, at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998.

She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Lockport, N.Y., to Charles W. and Bertha M. (Arrasmith) Groves. Her husband, Robert E. Wallace Sr., whom she married April 27, 1946, in Fostoria, died Jan. 14, 1989.

Survivors include: three sons, Robert E. Jr., Bradley K. and Bruce K. Wallace, all of Fostoria; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Julie) Vitt and Laura M. Gehr, both of Fostoria; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a grandson, Robbie Wallace; two brothers, Clyde and Earl Groves; and two sisters, Ruth Pence and Elsie Russell.

A homemaker, Mrs. Wallace enjoyed doing crafts and working with ceramics.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria Chapel. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, near Arcadia.

Visitation at the funeral home is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Ardis W. Sams
Former Upper Sandusky homemaker

Ardis W. Sams, 84, formerly of 518 Geron Drive, Springfield, recently of East Wyandot Ave., Upper Sandusky, died at 4:44 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in the Emergency Room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.

Born Sept. 3, 1913, in Sycamore, to Lewis J. and Effie (Ingman) Schwartz, she married Dwight E. Sams, May 15, 1937, in Upper Sandusky. He died June 20, 1981.

A sister, Margaret F. Welch of Tiffin; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, also survive.

A sister, Iona Newman, is deceased.

Mrs. Sams, a homemaker, was a graduate of Sycamore High School and a member of the United Brethren Church, Springfield.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Lucas Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with burial following in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the donor's favorite charity.

Rural Tiffin resident

Mary E. (Norris) Hossler, 78, 1822 S. Seneca CR 19, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Lucas County, Toledo.

Arrangements are pending at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.
