Edward H. Gamber
Retired draftsman, engineer, businessman

Edward H. Gamber, 71, of 512 Parkview Drive, Upper Sandusky, Ohio, died at 7:25 p.m. Friday, May 29, 1998, at his residence.

He was born March 8, 1927, in Upper Sandusky, to the late Edward H. and Carrie (Reynolds) Gamber, Sr. He married Molly M. Matthew August 28, 1949.

In addition to his wife, Molly, he is also survived by: three sons, Christopher M. of Upper Sandusky, David S. of Cocoa, Fla. and John H. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Cynthia) King of Upper Sandusky; nine grandchildren; and a brother, James A. Gamber of Grove City.

Mr. Gamber was a 1945 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II who served from 1945-47 on the U.S.S. Charles P. Cecil destroyer. After attending Bowling Green State Universtiy, he graduated in 1949 from I.T.T., Chicago, Ill., in mechanical engineering. He retired in 1995 fromSan-Con Corp., where he was part-owner, and worked as a draftsman and engineer. He designed many buildings in Upper Sandusky. He had also worked for Ruttmann Construction Co. and Sheldrik Manufacturing, both in Upper Sandusky, and for Marion Power Shovel.

A member of John Stewart United Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky, Gamber was an Explorer Boy Scout leader for seven years in Upper Sandusky. He was a life member of B.P.O.E. 83, where he served as Exalted Ruler in 1957 and 1973, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of B.P.O.E. Northwest District, State of Ohio, in 1983, and was a member of the B.P.O.E. Past Exalted Rulers Association of Local and State Organizations. Other groups to which he belonged included: Warpole Masonic Lodge 176, McCutchen Chapter 96, and U.S. Council 98; Tiffin Commandery, Zenobia Shrine, Toledo; Wyandot County Shrine Club; Tiffin Shrine Club; and O.E.S. SappHo Chapter, Attica.

Gamber had a special interest in Wyandot County history. He also enjoyed summers with friends at Bay Point, Marblehead, Ohio, for 30 years.

The Rev. Lenn Geiger will preside at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bringman & Co. Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. A private internment service will be held at Old Mission cemetery in Upper Sandusky.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Monday, where an Elks memorial service will be held at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Wyandot Co. Hospice, Upper Sandusky.

Joe A. Schafer
Former Tri-City Motors owner

Joe A. Schafer, 55, 1356 Orr Rd., Sycamore died at 10:57 p.m., Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at the Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. He was born March 3, 1943 to Robert Schafer, who survives in Sycamore, and Dortha (Spayth) Schafer, deceased. On March 20, 1964, Mr. Schafer married Sandra L. Jackson, and she survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Brad Schafer of Sycamore; two daughters, Mrs. Preston (Tamria) Risner of Carey and Michelle Schafer of Sycamore; three brothers, Richard and Steve Schafer, both of Sycamore, and Mike Schafer of Bloomville; and two grandchildren, Olivia and Grant Risner.

Mr. Schafer was a 1961 graduate of Lykens High School. He was a farmer and former owner of Tri-City Motors, Bucyrus. Memberships included: Baseline United Church of Christ, Indian Mill Antique Association, Ohio Antique Tractor Pullers Association, and the Ohio State Antique Tractor Pullers Association.

The Rev. Daniel Ward and the Rev. Timothy Grimes will officiate the 11 a.m., Monday, June 1, 1998 service at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home. Burial will be at Baseline U.C.C. cemetery.

Visitation hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, May 31 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Crawford County Heart Association or Ohio State University Cardiac Care Unit.

Suzanne Thompson
Tiffin relative

Suzanne Thompson, 40, of Pasadena, Maryland, died at 11:55 a.m., Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her sister's residence in Tiffin. Arrangements are pending at Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin.

Ruthanna Mann
Tiffin homemaker

Ruthanna Mann, 77, of Tiffin, died at 3:45 p.m. Monday, May 25, 1998, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

She was born in Tiffin Oct. 13, 1920, to Charles Ross and Rosa E. (Fegley) Hixson. Her husband, Clarence C. Mann, whom she married June 22, 1940, in Marysville, survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Myron R. Mann of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., John D. Mann of Marion and Tom D. Mann of Petersburg, Mich.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Ralph, Robert and Raymond Hixson, are deceased.

A homemaker and volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Mrs. Mann also worked at the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. for 22 years.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church, Eastern Star Tiffin Chapter 189 and the Pioneer Club of Bell Telephone Co.

Services in Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Gail Angel officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge (Egbert's) cemetery, rural Tiffin.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Dale E. Hayman
Retired factory worker

Dale E. Hayman, 79, died at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at his home at 2576 E. CR 58, Sycamore. He had been in failing health for eight months.

He was born in Upper Sandusky Aug. 16, 1918, the son of Harry R. and Carrie (MaGee) Hayman. On Jan. 24, 1945, he married Pearl Medford and they were divorced. Now Pearl (Medford) Hayman Radford, she survives in North Carolina.

Survivors also include: three children, Kenneth E. Hayman of Asheville, N.C., Ray H. Hayman of Hildebrand, N.C. and Ms. Angela C. Hayman of Asheville; a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Arlene) Allison of Asheville; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, George R. Hayman of Carey and Paul Hayman of rural Upper Sandusky; and six sisters, Mrs. Gladys Spitler of Tiffin, Mrs. Raymond (Edith) Mitten, Mrs. Marvin (Mary) Caudill and Mrs. Joanne Schreiner, all of rural Carey, Mrs. Edward (Louise) Huffman of Elyria and Mrs. Raymond (Lois) Pahl of rural New Riegel.

Mr. Hayman, a member of the Protestant Faith, was a retired factory worker.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he had served as a medical aidman in the Southern Phillipines and Western Pacific 1942-45.

He was a former member of VFW Post 2842, Moose Lodge 1093, and the Eagles Lodge, all of Upper Sandusky. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing and playing cards.

The Rev. Jan Kucera will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. Friday service in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, Sycamore.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care or a charity of the donor's choice.

Reva J. Collins
Gladio Food Service retiree

Reva J. Collins, 72, of Wahl Road, Vickery, died in Firelands Community Hospital, Sandusky, Tuesday, May 26, 1998.

She was born March 25, 1925, in Pike County, Ky., to Don and Marty (Wolfe) Kidd. In September 1940, she married Rastus Collins, and he survives.

Also surviving are: six children, Jett Lee and Larry Collins, both of Sandusky, Robert Collins of Huron, James Collins of Vickery, Mrs. Jack (Kathy) Russell of Clyde and Kenneth Collins of Green Springs; three sisters, Joy Purneske of Kentucky, Valerie Holly of Akron and Mary Holly of West Virginia; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a daughter, Rosemary Collins; and four brothers, Paris, Junior, Floyd and Jett Kidd.

Mrs. Collins, who received her education in Pike County, Ky., retired in 1978 from Gladio Food Service. She had resided in the Vickery area since 1961, coming here from Kentucky.

Services in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, will be 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Bo Hensley and the Rev. Kenneth Rose, of the Freewill Baptist Church, Sandhill, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Stein Hospice.

Jeanette Cecelia Nevius
Retired telephone operator/Sears employee

Jeanette Cecelia Nevius, 74, 10 Hampden Park, died at 1 a.m. Monday, May 25, 1998, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

She was born in New Washington, June 17, 1923, to Linus and Lillian (Heydinger) Wurm. On July 26, 1947, in New Washington, she married Robert B. Nevius and he survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Mark Nevius of Mansfield and Kevin Nevius of Gibsonburg; a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Elaine) Nusbaum of Tiffin; and four grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Nusbaum and Zachary and Kelsey Nevius.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, John and Vincent Wurm.

A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Pioneers Retirees Club at Ohio Bell, Mrs. Nevius retired as a telephone operator from Ohio Bell Telephone Company, after 35 years of service. She also had worked at Sears Roebuck and Company.

A funeral Mass in St. Joseph Catholic Church will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. James Say as celebrant. The Rosary will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to Calvert Foundation.

William R. Felter
Resident of Shelby

William R. Felter, 76, died Saturday evening, May 23, 1998, at his residence at 218 W. Main St., Shelby, following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Norwalk, the son of William and Mary Frances (Herlihy) Felter. His wife, Dorothy Mae (Augenstein) Felter, whom he married Jan. 31, 1943, survives.

Survivors also include: three sons, William Felter Jr. of Kent, Robert Felter of Shelby and Michael Felter of Sandusky; a daughter, Mrs. Nathan (Patty) Dappen of Columbus; 11 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a brother, Robert Felter of Hollywood, Fla.; and two sisters, Marjorie Abbott of Lakewood and Jane Bailey of Washington, D.C.

Mr. Felter, a graduate of Shelby High School, retired in 1985 from Miami Systems in Shelby.

He was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Shelby, American Legion O'Brien Post 326 and the Retirees Golf League at Wood Ridge Golf Course.

A U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Ranger, he coached Shelby Little League and American Legion ball teams for many years and enjoyed tennis, golf and baseball.

Visitation is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Turner Funeral Home, Shelby, where a Wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. John C. Missler officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, where military honors will be conducted at the graveside.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary School or the Shelby Little League, in care of Turner Funeral Home, 168 W. Main St., Shelby, Ohio 44875.

Dwight E. Aichholz
National Machinery employee/farmer

Dwight E. Aichholz, 73, of East TR 44, Attica, died Thursday evening, May 21, 1998, in Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born in Venice Township, Seneca County, May 29, 1924, the son of Edward C. and Erna Matilda (Shafer) Aichholz. He married Margaret Ohler, July 14, 1942, in Maysville, Ky., and she survives.

Also surviving are six daughters, Janet Hoy of Green Springs, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Tackett and Mrs. Roy (Peggy) Hicks, both of Willard, Mrs. Paul (Susan) Cathers of Galion, Mrs. Jim (Carol) Bublick of Toledo and Mrs. Glenn (Rita) Kreb of Vickery; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and two half-sisters, Alberta Utz of Attica and Alice Sheets of Lake Monazoma, Ariz.

Three sisters, Jean Davis, Nancy Kay and Bernidette Aichholz; and a half-brother, Floyd Green, are deceased.

A 1942 graduate of Attica High School, Mr. Aichholz farmed and also worked at the National Machinery for 18 years and the Cobey Company in Bucyrus for 15 years.

Having spent eight months of the year in North Port, Fla. with his wife, he was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau of Seneca County.

The Rev. Carla H. Knobler will officiate at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Home, 1295 W. Tiffin St., Attica. Burial will be in Attica-Venice cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association or the American Kidney Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

Richard A. Hahler
Fanny Farmer Candy retiree

Richard A. Hahler, 70, of 1208 SR 162, Willard, died at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in Hillside Acres, Willard.

He was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Norwich Township, to the late Joseph and Mary (Bischoff) Hahler.

Survivors include: two brothers, Robert and Howard Hahler of Willard; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Haspeslagh of Attica, Mrs. Ortrude Diehm of Willard and Mrs. Florence Brown of Bellevue; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A sister, Agnes L. Hahler, preceded him in death.

A member of St. Sebastian's Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, Mr. Hahler retired from Fanny Farmer Candy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Sebastian's Catholic Church, with the Rev. William G. Hoyng officiating. Burial will be in St. Sebastian's cemetery, Bismark.

Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, 1295 W. Tiffin St., Attica, where the Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Harold "Shorty" Gaster
Retired truck driver

Harold "Shorty" Gaster, 82, of 2209 SR 19, Bucyrus, died in Heartland of Bucyrus at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 1998. He had been seriously ill for the last six months.

He was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Kirby, to Preston H. and Allavenna R. (Remlinger) Gaster. On May 21, 1977, he married Betty J. Hurrell, and she survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Harold Bruce Gaster of Tennessee, Patrick Hurrell of Shelby and Michael Hurrell of Florida; three daughters, Melody Fleitas of Florida, Patricia Hoover of Tiffin and Carol Cole of Tiro; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Hoepf of Carey.

Preceding him in death were a brother, Maurice Gaster, and a sister, Margaret Chaney.

A resident of the Bucyrus area since 1965, having moved there from Tiffin, Mr. Gaster retired as a truck driver from Cooper-Jarrett after 40 years of employment.

He was a member of Bucyrus Moose Lodge 669, AMVETS Post 27, Eagles Lodge 4525 and VFW Post 1078.

His body will be cremated and a private family burial will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Heart Association, in care of the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, Bucyrus, which is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Richard Charles Gray
Former Fostoria resident

Richard Charles Gray, 47, of Ithaca, N.Y., died Monday, May 11, 1998, as the result of a canoeing accident in an inlet of Cayuga Lake.

He was born Dec. 20, 1950, in Fostoria, the son of George and Ida Mary Gray. They survive.

Also surviving are two older brothers, Robert Gray of Fostoria and David Gray of Stow, Maine.

Mr. Gray, who grew up in Fostoria, graduated from Fostoria High School in 1968 and from the College of Wooster in 1972. After a year of travel and work in Europe, he continued his studies in city and regional planning in graduate school at Cornell University.

He enjoyed the environment and the community of Ithaca where he developed many interests and was known for his appreciation of the outdoors and rich organic things, such as hiking, skiing, biking, boating, playing volleyball, gardening and wine-making.

He also was active in community affairs and at the time of his death was serving his second term as Alderman in the City of Ithaca Common Council. Mr. Gray made his greatest contributions in the areas of computerizing city records, developing bike trails, working with public access television and being actively involved in other environmental issues. Mr. Gray also was greatly valued by the mayor and other council members for his contributions and his mediating influence.

Memorial services in the First Presbyterian Church, Fostoria, will be 2 p.m., May 30, and at the pavilion in Stewart Park in Ithaca at 6:30 p.m. June 13.

Memorials may be made to any environmental protection organization or toward a multi-use path that will be developed along the shore of Cayuga Lake and named in Mr. Gray's honor. Contributions may be sent to the Office of the Mayor, City of Ithaca, Ithaca, NY 14850, earmarked for the Richard Gray memorial path.

The Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
