Kathryn Friderici Pontius
Tiffin native/educator

Kathryn Friderici Pontius, 89, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, of a stroke, at Ocean Springs Nursing Center, Ocean Springs, Miss.

Her husband, Ralph Pontius, preceded her in death in 1969.

Survivors include two sons, William F. Pontius of Ocean Springs and David R. Pontius of Norman, Ill.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A native of Tiffin, Mrs. Pontius graduated from Tiffin High School and Heidelberg College in 1930 with a degree in education.

She was a member of the Dolly Todd Madison Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Tiffin, and transferred her membership to the Gulf Coast Chapter in October 1946, then to the Ralph Humphreys Chapter in December 1948, and finally to the Doak's Treaty Chapter in October 1967. Mrs. Pontius served the NSDAR in numerous capacities, including Regent of both the Ralph Humphrey's and Doak's Treaty Chapters. In May 1995, she received a proclamation from Doak's Treaty Chapter for her devotion to NSDAR. She also was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and had served as governor general for the Mississippi Chapter.

Mrs. Pontius also was a member of the Mississippi Diocesan Alter Guild Liaison to Gray Center, Camp Bratton Green Chapel, where she maintained the sacristy linens and served as an advisor to the Diocesan Altar Guild Board. In recent years, the Board of Directors and the membership of the Mississippi Diocesan Altar Guild presented Mrs. Pontius with a commendation for her unwavering service.

Other memberships included the Colonial Dames of America, Chapter XV, Canton Community Players and Friends of Canton Library. She was an accomplished china painter and taught many students in her studio in Canton. She also displayed her artwork at the Canton Flea Market for many years.

Mrs. Pontius also was active in the National Pontius Association, where she had served on the board of directors and later as director emeritus.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Grace Episcopal Church, with interment in Canton cemetery, Canton, Miss.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the Parish Center. The Breeland Funeral Home, 3304 S. Liberty St., Canton, Miss., is in charge of arrangements.

Robert B. Pearce
American Standard retiree

Robert B. Perce, 74, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at his residence at 210 W. 8th St., Sycamore.

He was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Peru, Ind., to Leonard W. and Beatrice (Kissinger) Pearce. On Sept. 12, 1942, he married Mary Jo Decker. She died in January 1953. His second wife, Dorothy (Ingman) Granata-Pearce, whom he married Aug. 5, 1953, preceded him in death June 17, 1996.

Survivors include eight children: Richard Granata of Boston, Mass., David Granata of Sycamore, Mrs. James (Sue) Moyer of Melmore, Mrs. Butch (Jackie) Reinbolt of Tiffin, Mrs. Marc (Ann) Weikert of McCutchenville, Ms. Bobbi Bates and Mrs. Bob (Becky) Risner, both of rural Sycamore, and Mrs. Richard (Bette) Shaw of Carey. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A great-grandchild, Austin Todd; two sisters, Mrs. Patricia Trausch and an infant sister, Fern Lorraine Pearce, are deceased.

A former Tiffin policeman, Mr. Pearce retired as a caster from American Standard, where he had been employed for 34 years.

He was a member of VFW Post 2858, Tiffin and a life member of Sycamore American Legion Post 250, where he served as past commander.

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he was a gunner and member of the rescue swim team during his service time and was stationed on the ship U.S.S. Borie.

Private graveside services will be in Bethel cemetery, McCutchenville. The body has been cremated.

There will be no visitation. The Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County.

Robert E. Baxter
Former Fostoria resident

Robert E. Baxter, 70, of Lilburn, Ga., formerly of Fostoria, died Monday, May 25, 1998. Arrangements are pending at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Chriselda Tey
Former Fostoria High School student

Chriselda Tey, 17, of Fostoria, died at 4:20 p.m. Friday, May 24, 1998, in the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, Toledo.

She was born in Findlay, Sept. 27, 1980, the daughter of Noe C. and Delia M. (Martinez) Tey. They survive in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a brother, Cosme Tey and two sisters, Erica and Sarah Tey, all of Fostoria; three nieces; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Tey of Sycamore, Domingo Martinez of Gonzales, Texas and Alisia Martinez of Fostoria; her great-grandmother, Margarita DeLeon of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A May 24, 1988, graduate of Mohawk High School, Ms. Tey had been a student at Fostoria High School, where she was an honor roll student, president of the Spanish Club and a cheerleader for five years (most recently being a varsity football and basketball cheerleader).

Services in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria Chapel, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with Pastor Ron Merritt of the Church of the Good Shepherd and Pastor Herb Stickland officiating. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd or the Gideons International.

James K. Thallman
Former Bloomville resident

James K. Thallman, 50, of 611 Bluebonnet Drive, Findlay, died early Friday morning, Aug. 21, 1998, at his home. His death is being investigated by the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Thallman grew up in the Bloomville area and was recently living in the Findlay area, working as a self-employed counselor for alcohol and drug abuse.

Arrangements are pending at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville.

Gertrude Y. Hessick
Fremont homemaker

Gertrude Y. Hessick, 92, of 2232 Finefrock Road, Fremont, died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in the Elmwood Care Center, Sandusky County, Green Springs.

She was born Nov. 20, 1905, in Springfield, to Ervin D. and Caroline E. "Carrie" (Tannreuther) Young. Her first husband, Willis B. Havens, whom she married Aug. 10, 1931, in Covington, Ky., and her second husband, Dewey Hessick, whom she married July 24, 1946, in Indiana, are both deceased.

Survivors include: two sons, Philip F. and Karl E. Havens, both of rural Fremont; four stepchildren, Richard and Robert Hessick, Evelyn Fox and Donna Jean Preston; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and a brother Philip T. Young of rural Green Springs.

A son, John D. Havens; and a stepdaughter, Rowena Moll, are deceased.

Mrs. Hessick, a homemaker and long-time Fremont area resident, was a 1923 graduate of Green Springs High School and a graduate of Tiffin University (1923-25).

She was a member of Green Springs United Methodist Church and Icedore Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Green Springs, where she was a 50-year member.

The Rev. James A. Scott will officiate at the 1 p.m. Friday service in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Fremont.

Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where Eastern Star services will be at 7:30.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Terri L. Gilbert
Cooper Tire employee

Terri L. Gilbert, 34, of 108 W. Adams St., Green Springs, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, following an accident on Seneca CR 62 in rural Green Springs.

She was born in Fremont Jan. 11, 1964, to Donald E. and Beverly J. (Rowe) Gilbert, who both survive at 108 W. Adams St., Green Springs.

Survivors also include: a son, Gabriel Gilbert of Green Springs; her grandparents, Charles and Dorothy Gilbert and Mrs. Lela Rowe, all of Green Springs; great-grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Gillette of Green Springs; two sisters, Tamela Leber of Green Springs and Toni McDannell of Republic; and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Ms. Gilbert, a 1982 Clyde High School graduate, was employed at Cooper Tire in Bowling Green. She attended Bowling Green State University and graduated from Terra Community College.

A member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Green Springs, she was a U.S. Armyveteran, having been stationed at Fort Bragg and in Germany.

Services in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs, will be at 3 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Interment will be in Green Springs cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Robert W. Ford
Ford Motor Co. retiree

Robert W. Ford, 86, of 715 Eastern Ave., Fostoria, died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, in Winebrenner Village, Findlay.

He was born in Fostoria March 28, 1912, to Rolen M. and Gary W. (Plott) Ford.

Surviving are: two sons, Terry A. Ford of Fostoria and James R. Ford of Findlay; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Virginia) Spaun of Findlay; a brother, Charles E. Ford of Toledo; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Dale R. Ford.

Mr. Ford, a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, during which he was a staff sergeant, retired in 1972 as a skilled trade machinist from the Ford Motor Co., Fostoria, after 33 years.

He was a member of Fostoria United Sportsman, AMVETS 69 and the American Legion, all of Fostoria.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria Chapel, with the Rev. Branson Hawkes officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veteran's of Fostoria.

Visitation at the funeral home is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sam J. Buccione
Webster Mfg. retiree

Sam J. Buccione, 68, 192 Tomb St., died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin of cardiac arrest.

He was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Tiffin, to the late Dominic and Carmella (Marcella) Buccione. His wife, Joyce (Roberts) Buccione, whom he married Sept. 28, 1963, in Tiffin, survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Dominic A. "Nick" Buccione of Tiffin; two daughters, Tina (Buccione) Liberge of Sarasota, Fla., and Sara Pine of Gloversville, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Tricia (Nelson) Gaskin of Sarasota; seven grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Black of Tiffin, Mrs. Elizabeth Pendrey of Chandler, Ariz., Mrs. James (Josephine) Rolando of Jackson, Wis., and Helene Richey of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.

A brother, John Buccione, is deceased.

Mr. Buccione, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, retired in 1991 from Webster Mfg. after 47 years.

A life-time Tiffin resident and a member of the Catholic faith, he had attended the Tiffin Public Schools and was a member of the Tiffin Moose Lodge.

Services in Seneca Memory Gardens Mausoleum will be at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. William J. Rose officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home is 6-9 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospital of Tiffin, the Allen Eiry Senior Center or the donor's choice.

Frank J. Hampshire
cemetery/parks department retiree

Frank J. Hampshire, 75, of State Street, Fostoria, died in Fostoria Community Hospital at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998.

He was born in Fostoria, Sept. 11, 1922, to Frank G. and Nora (Kooken) Hampshire. On Dec. 9, 1945, in Risingsun, he married Mary A. Limes. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: three sons, Frank W. Hampshire of Chesnee, S.C., Charles J. and Matthew C. Hampshire, both of Fostoria; a daughter, Maryalice Chancey of Fostoria; and 10 grandchildren.

A son, Robert C. Hampshire; a brother, Robert G. Hampshire; and two sisters, Rachel Boster and Madelyn Hampshire, are deceased.

Mr. Hampshire, a member of Union Local 811, retired in 1985 from the City of Fostoria cemetery and Parks Department, where he had been employed for more than 45 years.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. Donald Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Elaine M. Fry
Wife of Old Fort native

Elaine M. Fry, 66, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at her home in St. Maries, Idaho.

She was born July 22, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., to Frank and Agnes (Laga) Blada. She moved to Emida, Idaho, in 1944 with her mother and adopted father, Howard Spurgeon. In 1951, she married Bob Moe. He died in 1958.

Survivors include: her husband, Ray Fry, an Old Fort native whom she met at the St. Maries Airport, and married in 1961; a son, Greg Fry of Asotin, Wash.; a daughter, Laura Fry of Boise, Idaho; two grandchildren; and a stepsister, Phyllis Spurgeon Masse of Mansfield, Wash.

Mrs. Fry, who graduated salutatorian from St. Maries High School in 1950, attended Eastern Washington University and the University of Idaho.

She traveled to Moscow, Russia, as a member of the University of Idaho centennial delegation in 1987; coached gymnastics for several years and competed in swimming at the National Senior Games in San Antonio, Texas, in 1995.

Her volunteering efforts included organizing youth groups to plant trees. She enjoyed downhill skiing and traveling.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, St. Maries, the AN Chapter of PEO and several pilot organizations.

Mrs. Fry loved flying and earned her private pilot's license in 1958. She also worked for equal opportunity in women's athletics and more recently to save the cottonwood trees on the St. Joe River.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, St. Maries, with the Rev. Roy Jeremiah officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn cemetery, St. Maries.

Visitation at the Yates-Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries, will be 3-7 p.m. Thursday.

Alice M. (Myers) Fenstermaker
Fremont homemaker

Alice M. (Myers) Fenstermaker, 95, formerly of Tiffin Road, Fremont, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in Bethesda Care Center, Fremont.

She was born in Old Fort Feb. 20, 1903, to Clarence S. and Mary E. (Ensminger) Myers. On July 23, 1928, she married Guyan Leroy Fenstermaker. He died Sept. 15, 1976.

Surviving are: two daughters, Carol Bender of Fremont and Marilyn Kadiuraus of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Irma J. Fenstermaker, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A homemaker, Mrs. Fenstermaker was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and cats.

The Rev. Lowell N. Peterson will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Thursday service in the Wonderly-Horvath Funeral Home, Fremont. Interment will be in Pleasant Union cemetery, Old Fort.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Sandusky County Humane Society or the National Wildlife Society.
