Shirley Ann Sherman
Fremont native

Former Fremont resident Shirley Ann (Genson) Sherman, 66, of Avon Park, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Tampa General Hospital.

She was born in Fremont, to Roy and Mildred (Nitsehke) Genson. She married Dick Sherman Oct. 20, 1951. He was the athletic director at Fremont Ross High School for many years, and he survives.

Also surving are: her parents of Avon Park; two sons, Michael of Fremont and James Sherman of Kingwood, Texas; a daughter, Vicki Werling of Colorado Springs; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Vera Whittington and Colleen Doren of Avon Park and Faye Bunn of Fremont.

Mrs. Sherman received a master's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1967 after raising her children. She taught and coached in the Fremont school system and Heidelberg College. In 1987, she retired to Avon Park and enjoyed membership at the River Greens Golf Course there. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Chruch in Fremont and Resurrection Lutheran Church in Avon Park.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fremont.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. The Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

James David Daniels
Coinmach employee

James David Daniels, 40, of Bradner, died Monday evening, Dec. 14, 1998, in an automobile accident on Rt. 6 in Wood County. Arrangements are pending at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Major Levi W. Olmstead
Retired Salvation Army officer

Major Levi W. Olmstead, 78, of Belpre, died at 3:35 pm. Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 6, 1920, in West Pittstown, Pa., to Levi William Sr. and Liltas Blanche (Newhart) Olmstead. His parents died when he was a child and he and his brother were sent to the Junior Order of United American Mechanics National Orphans Home in Tiffin, where he graduated in 1937.

His wife, the former Captain Syble Goudy, whom he married Oct. 6, 1952, died Dec. 15, 1992.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Cathryn Olmstead, at home; and a brother, Wesley Olmstead of Batavia, Ill.

Also preceding him in death were two infant sons and a brother, Chester Olmstead.

Following his graduation from the Junior Home he worked at various jobs including employment on a dairy farm, a cook at an elite hotel in Connecticut, service man and as a clerk in the Library of Congress before enrolling in the Salvation Army School for Officer Training. At one time he had worked at the Salvation Army in Tiffin.

He was commissioned in 1941 and had various appointments in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri and he and his wife later held corps appointments in southwest Ohio, northern New Jersey and Northern New England. They retired from the Portland, Maine, Divisional Headquarters and were assigned to the Marietta Corps as officers 1963-67. After retirement there, they returned to Marietta, where they resided until they moved to Belpre in 1988.

Maj. Olmstead was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and the Boy Scouts of America and in 1960 was appointed as a relationship aid at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Denver, Colo. He also was a talented musician.

Services are 2 p.m. today at the Salvation Army Hall. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be until noon today at the McClure-Schafer Funeral Home, Marietta and at the Salvation Army Hall one hour prior to the service.

Paul V. Boes
Wyandot County dairy farmer

Paul V. Boes, 63, died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at his residence at 15994 TH 49, Upper Sandusky.

He was born in Kirby, Aug. 12, 1935, the son of Charles and Leona C. (Brandt) Boes. His mother survives in Kirby. On Sept. 16, 1961, in Tiro, he married Mary K. Pifher, who survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Kevin Boes of Upper Sandusky; five daughters, Mrs. Joe (Ann) Weatherholtz of Wharton, Mrs. Thomas (Shirley) Lucius of Tiffin, Mrs. Dennis (Susanne) Hartman, also of Wharton, Mrs. Dale (Carolyn) Reidlinger of Upper Sandusky and Lisa Boes of Forest; eight grandchildren; seven brothers, Bernard of Kirby, Charles, Richard, Francis, Eugene and Daniel, all of Upper Sandusky and Joseph of Grove City; and four sisters, Rita Wagner of Tiffin, Sister Agnes Marie, Sister of Mercy, Dayton, Sister Jane Marie, Sister of Mercy, Springfield and Mrs. Robert (Mary Margaret) Dick of Kenton.

A son, James; and his father, are deceased.

Mr. Boes, a Wyandot County dairy farmer, founded and operated the West Lincoln Registered Holsteins Farm in Upper Sandusky.

A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kirby, the Wyandot County Farm Bureau and the National Farmers Organization, he had served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kirby, with the Rev. James Holmer as celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation at the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a Biblical Wake service will be at 8:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Wyandot County Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice.

James David Daniels
Coinmach employee

James David Daniels, 40, of Bowling Green Road, Bradner, died at 9:44 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in a vehicle accident in Wood County.

He was born in Monroe, Mich., Sept. 7, 1958, to Earl and Rita H. (Marino) Daniels. His mother survives in Monroe.

Survivors also include his fiance, Jonna R. Lewis of Bradner; two sons, James David Jr. and Michael Jacob Daniels, both of Bradner; a daughter Alyssa Nicole Daniels of Michigan; three brothers, Robert J. and Thomas Paul Daniels, both of Monroe and Earl Daniels Jr. of Virginia; and three sisters, Mary Jane Bray of Monroe, Mrs. Joseph (Susan E.) Novak of Carleton, Mich. and Mrs. William (Marie Frances) Elmore of Newport, Mich.

His father is deceased.

Mr. Daniels, a United States Navy man, was employed at Coinmach in Macedonia. He attended Bradner United Methodist Church and formerly attended St. Michael's Catholic Church, Monroe.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. Daniel J. Ring and the Rev. Zedda Myers as co-officiants. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fostoria VFW, American Legion and AMVETS.

Visitaion at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to the family, in care of the Hoening Funeral Home, 242 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, OH 44830.

Carol J. Ball
Green Springs homemaker

Carol J. Ball, 55, of Sandusky CR 173, Green Springs, and formerly of Bryan and Auburn, Ind., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, as the result of an automobile/bicycle accident in Ballville Township.

She was born May 11, 1943, in Louisville, Ky., to Vernie and Helen (Smith) Worman. On July 30, 1960, in Butler, Ind., she married George Ball, who died March 20, 1995.

A sister, Sharon Barney of Green Springs and numerous nieces and nephews, survive.

A homemaker, Mrs. Ball was a member of the Eagles and VFW Ladies Auxiliaries and Ladies of the Moose, all of Bryan.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Foos-Klein Funeral Home, Clyde. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Cromley cemetery, Defiance.

Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mildred J. Herod
Arcadia homemaker

Mildred J. Herod, 65, of East Fremont Street, Arcadia, died at her home at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998.

Born Sept. 2, 1933, in Fostoria, to the late Jess and Florence (Brooker) Haynes, she married Cecil E. Herod Sr. Oct. 5, 1954, in Old Fort. He preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1995.

Surviving are five sons, Toby A. Keeney Sr. of Cleveland, Cecil Herod Jr. of Findlay, Timothy Herod of Spring Hill, Fla. and Kenneth Sr. and Dennis Herod, both of Fostoria; a daughter, Gail Fought of Arcadia; two sisters, Anna Burch of Fostoria and Donna Kenney of Alvada; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, LeRoy and Donald Haynes; and four sisters, Blanche and Arlene Haynes, Betty McNutt and Starling Harris.

A homemaker, Mrs. Herod had attended Fostoria High School and was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church of God, Fostoria.

The Rev. Donald Goodwin will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Friday service in the Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church of God. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to Bridge Hospice of Hancock County or a charity of the donor's choice.

Flora B. Sammet
Homemaker/former greenhouse employee

Flora B. Sammet, 93, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at her residence at 830 Pleasant View, Upper Sandusky.

She was born in Wyandot County, Dec. 16, 1905, to Perry F. and Fuzzie B. (Mooney) Gilliland. Her husband, Harold F. Sammet, whom she married June 5, 1929, in Upper Sandusky, died July 26, 1969.

Survivors include a son, Homer F. Sammet of Lakeland, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Lois) Rife, Mrs. Myron (Maxine) Rife and Mrs. John (Helen) Clinger, all of Upper Sandusky and Ms. Mary Jane Riley of Canton; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Gilliland and Paul Guthrie, both of Upper Sandusky; and two sisters, Nellie Ekleberry and Odessa Sweigard, both of Upper Sandusky.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Kathleen; three brothers, Adolph,Robert and Frederick; and a sister, Hazel.

Mrs. Sammet, a homemaker, worked on the farm and at the former Sammet Greenhouse in Upper Sandusky. She also prepared many meals for various Elks functions.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Warpole Chapter 366, the First Luthran Church, Upper Sandusky and its Women of the Church.

Services in the First Lutheran Church will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Robert Gordon officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation at the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Eastern Star services will be 8:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice of Wyandot County.

John 'Jack' A. Humbert
Green Springs resident

John "Jack" A. Humbert, 60, of 6881 E. Co. Rd. 34, Green Springs, died at 10:45 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at the Bellevue Hospital. He was born April 5, 1938, to John N. and Gertrude (Williams) Humbert. His mother survives and lives in Florida. On May 13, 1978, he married Paulette Morrison, and she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Greg Humbert of Florida, and Steve Humbert of Okinawa, Japan; three sisters, Karla Bagent of Oak Harbor, Ramonda Weiker of Green Springs, and Tonya Combs of Maryland; three brothers, Ron Humbert of Fredericksburg, Jim Humbert of Wisconsin, and Tom Humbert of Florida; two sisters, Barb Dundore of Pennsylvania and Trudy Smith of Florida; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Humbert was a graduate of Green Springs High School and remained a lifelong Green Spings-area resident. He worked as a mechanic and autobody technician with Fremont Volvo. Memberships included the Clyde Eagles and the Green Springs VFW Post 6067.

The Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele will officiate the 12 p.m. service Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs. Burial will be in Green Springs.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Donna Rule
Retired owner of Pi-Zon Pizza Shop of Mansfield

Donna Rule, 68, of 846 Co. Rd. 224, Clyde, died at 6:10 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at the St. Francis Care Center after a one-month residency. She was born Jan. 14, 1930 to Glen Miller; he preceded her in death. Her first marriage was to Wayne Ethel, who passed away. Her second marriage was to Richard C. Rule, and he survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Forest G. Brooks of Tucson, AZ., Larry A. Ethel, Sr. of Mansfield, and Wesley Ethel of Mansfield; two daughters, Janet Brewington of Bucyrus and Beverly Turner of LeHigh, FL; a brother, Melvin Miller of AZ; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Rule retired as the owner of Pi-Zon Pizza Shop of Mansfield after 15 years. She was a graduate of Akron City Schools.

Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date. Burial will be in Green Springs cemetery.

No visitation hours are scheduled.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Marion (Hodges) Drake
Former Tiffin reading teacher

Marion (Hodges) Drake, 88, formerly of Tiffin, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 1998, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care facility following a long ordeal with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Plymouth Township, Ashtabula County, on August 26, 1910, the daughter of Lucius and Glendora (Stevenson) Hodges. On June 6, 1934, she married Max Drake, and he survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, David (Margo) Drake of Tiffin, Jim (Sara)Drake of Fairfield Glade, TN, Steve Drake of St. Louis, MO, Paul (Peggy) Drake of Huron; a sister, Alice Rushton of Kingsville; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were: twin son, Phillip, who died at birth; brothers Arthur and Wilbur.

A lifelong educator who was born to teach, Mrs. Drake graduated from Ashtabula High School, and Kent State University. She was a fourth-generation teacher, and two more generations of teachers have followed her. Her first teaching job was in a one-room school house in Ashtabula County. After raising her family, Mrs. Drake returned to teaching as a reading specialist in the Tiffin public and Catholic schools. She had a knack for teaching the handicapped and slow learners. She was active in church work, Bible Study, women's clubs, and garden and Shakespeare clubs.

The Rev. Mark Johnson will officiate the 11 a.m. service, Monday, Dec. 21 at the Hillsdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Floral Grove cemetery in Pioneer.

Friends may call after noon on Sunday at the St. John-White Funeral Home, Reading. The family will receive friends that evening from 7-9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, or the Hillsdale United Methodist Church.

Maude E. Nau
Lifelong Burgoon resident

Maude E. Nau, 88, formerly of Burgoon, died at 12:37 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Fremont Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 20, 1909, to Rolla and Hazel (Troxel) Warner. On Oct. 20, 1927, she married Milton Nau in Port Clinton; he passed away.

Survivors include: a son, Thomas Nau of Findlay; three daughters, Mrs. Dwight (Darlene M.) Wise, Jr. of Fremont, Mrs. James W. (Jean L.) Hartsel of Bettsville, and Mrs. Edward (Joan A.) Shilling of Maumee; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were: two brothers, Claude and Harold Warner; two step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eloise Thomas and Mildred Fry.

Mrs. Nau was a graduate of Jackson-Burgoon class of 1927, a member of the First United Church of Christ and a homemaker.

The Rev. Jim Wise will officiate the 2 p.m. service Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Engle Funeral Home of Bettsville. Burial will be at Smith cemetery.

Visitation is private.

Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ, Fremont.
