Gilbert P. “Gib” Cooper, Sr.

THE PLAINS – Gilbert P. “Gib” Cooper, Sr, 86, of The Plains, died Tuesday evening, December 9, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. Born November 4, 1917, in New Marshfield, he was the son of the late John Edward and Carrie Chesser Cooper. Gib was an area auto mechanic for most of his life and an avid hunter. He is survived by three sons, Gary (Jeanne) Cooper of Athens, Gilbert Jr. (Linda) Cooper of Athens, and Edward (Melissa) Cooper of Nelsonville; two daughters, Brenda (Terry) Robinette of Nelsonville, and June (Bill) Foughty of Redtown; twelve grandchildren, Carrie April, Tiffiny, Jonathon, Amy, Jamie, Penny, Michelle, Ryan, Patricia, Shawn, Billy, and Teresa; and seven great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary B.; a son, Jackie; two grandsons, Jerry and Larry; one great grandson, Jacob; and four brothers. Services will be held Friday, at 1:00 p.m. at, Athens. Burial will be at Grahams Chapel cemetery, Shade. Rita A. Griffith

THE PLAINS – Rita A. Griffith, 54, of The Plains, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born November 17, 1949, she was the daughter of Charles S. and Martha Cole Johnson of West Virginia. Rita was employed by Rite Aid in The Plains. She is survived by her husband, Mack Griffith of The Plains; four grandchildren, Jessica Church, Michael Fusik, Christopher Fusik, and Christina Fusik; two sisters, Sharon of Cleveland, and Karen of West Virginia; and one brother, Richard of West Virginia. She was preceded in death by one son, Michael Griffith; one daughter, Pamela Fusik; and a grandson Johnathon Fusik. Services will be held Saturday, 3:00 p.m. at, Athens, with Roger Powell officiating. Burial will be at Hooper Ridge cemetery, Athens. ATHENS – Louella W. Rousey, 95, of Athens, died Friday evening, January 9, 2004, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.

David M. Wakeland

THE PLAINS – David M. Wakeland, 64, of The Plains, died Monday, January 19, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born April 25, 1939, in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late Ervin J., Sr. and Juanita Milam Wakeland. David was a member of the IOE, Local 18 for over 30 years; he was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge #973; and a member of The Plains United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Cathy DeWeese-Wakeland; two daughters, Karen (Randy) Grider of Waverly, and Sandy (Randy) Southworth of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Kristi, Chasity, J.R., Jasmine, Tiara, and Montana; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Mona) Wakeland of Grove City; George T. (Nancy) Wakeland of Duneden, FL; three sisters, Irene Steele of Matewan, WV, Patricia (Robert) Wilson of Grove City, and Veda (Michael) Noble of Dublin; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Murven and Rosalee DeWeese of The Plains; a brother-in-law, Kerry (Dorothy) DeWeese of The Plains; a sister-in-law, Susan Tudor of Athens; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Randall S. Wakeland of Dublin, and a special niece, Scarlett Tudor of Athens. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Ervin J. Wakeland, Jr.; a brother-in-law, Willis D. Steele; and a grandson, Isreal Freeland. Services will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at, Athens, with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be at Zion cemetery, The Plains. Olivia Gray Sole

ATHENS - Olivia Gray Sole, 14, of Athens died Saturday, January 24, 2004. Born July 31, 1989 in Athens, she was the loving daughter of John D. and Jan (Cawood) Sole. Known to her friends as “Oie,” she was a freshman honor student at Athens High School. A talented artist, dancer and pianist, she was loved dearly by all who knew her. Kind and full of fun and laughter, she had a style all her own. She was a true and caring friend, and the treasure of her parents’ lives. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmother Celia Sole of Old Brookville, New York; uncle Carl Cawood of Columbus; aunts and uncles Claudia and Don Deere of Niwot, Colorado; Linda and Bruce Faul of Boulder, Colorado; Deborah Sole and Peter Rohowski of Far Hills, New Jersey; Mia Sole and Jeff Haycock of Rollinsville, Colorado; and many loving cousins. She was preceded in death by grandparents, John Sole, Sr., Carl Cawood, and Betty Schoenbachler. Friends and family are invited to call on Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. at the Ohio University Inn Ballroom, 331 Richland Avenue, Athens. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Court and Washington Streets, with Craig Seitz officiating. Eulah Milum

ATHENS – Eulah Milum, 75, of Athens, died peacefully at her home, Friday, January 23, 2004, after an extended illness. Born October 1, 1928, in Chattaroy, WV, she was the daughter of the late Boyd and Elizabeth Diamond Howard. Eulah was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Robert) Rankin of Athens, and Sandy (Gary Pratt) Patton of Athens; one son, Bob (Candy McCloud) Milum of Athens; four grandchildren, Eric Rankin, Pamela Stevenson, Jason Rankin, and Matthew Milum; five great grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Savage of Kentucky; and one brother, Homer Howard of Kentucky. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Joe Milum. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church, Athens, with Father Martin Holler officiating. Louise Faye Pyle

ATHENS – Louise Faye Pyle, 77, of Kettering and formerly of Athens, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Hospice of Dayton. Born September 7, 1926, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Dora Ellen Wyatt Shields. She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn (Bill) Walters of Florida, Barbara (David) Zientara of Dayton, Brenda (Ted) Tomashot of Dayton, and Leslie (Billy) Clendenen of Kettering; one son, Gary Pyle of Kettering; three brothers, Chuck Shields of Athens, Darrell Shields of Albany, and Roscoe Shields of Dayton; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald H. Pyle; two sisters; seven brothers; and a grandson, Richard Anthony Marker. Services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m., at, Athens, with Reverend Steve Bentley officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery. George R. Tucker

ATHENS – George R. Tucker, 85, of Athens, died Sunday, February 1, 2004, at Russell’s Nursing Home, Albany. Born December 19, 1918, in Athens, he was the son of the late Leonard and Mary Baxter Tucker. George was retired from Abex and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine M. Tucker, two sons, Dick Tucker of Logan, and Herb Tucker of Athens; a daughter, Jeanie McCoy of Athens; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother. Ralph Koker, Jr.

ATHENS – Ralph Koker, Jr., 70, of Athens, died Monday February 2, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born July 4, 1933, he was the son of the late Ralph, Sr. and Martha Pinkerton Koker. Ralph was a local businessman as the former owner of Buckye Potato Chips, Koker’s Sporting Goods, K&K Coffee, and The Mine Tavern. He was a lifetime member of the Athens VFW, Post 3477, and AmVets Post 76; a member of American Legion Post 21, the Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Figgins Koker, whom he married August 6, 1983; five sons, Mike Koker of Vancouver, WA, Joe Koker of Louisville, KY, Tim Koker of Nelsonville, Joe Figgins of Athens, and Mark Figgins of Huron; a daughter, Kim (Rick) Nihiser of Logan; three brothers, Kenneth (Faith) Koker of Powell, TN, Richard (Barb) Koker of Syracuse, and Gerald Koker of Vancouver, WA; and nine grandchildren, Michael Joesph Koker, Chase Edward Koker, Kristan, Brittany and Danni Nihiser, Jacob, Hannah, Zackary, and Riley Figgins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul “P.D.” Figgins. Services will be held Thursday, at 1:30 pm, at, Athens, with John Mucha officiating. INEZ KASLER

ATHENS – Inez Kasler, 79, of Athens, went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, February 14, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born May 7, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Stella Dusz. Inez was a 1942 graduate of Jacksonville-Trimble High School, and was a member of the United Brotheren Church of Jacksonville. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Kasler; a son, Stephen of Athens; two sisters, Mary Thomas of West Jefferson, and Bobbie Shumway of Ashville. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Paul, and Keith Alan. Services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. at, Athens, with Gary Alton officiating. Burial will be at Maplewood cemetery, Glouster. LUCILLE LAMBERT

PRATTS FORK – Lucille Lambert, 95, of Pratts Fork, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at Crestview Manor, Lancaster. Born November 19, 1908, in Pratts Fork, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Amanda Staneart Colburn. Lucille is survived by three brothers, Wilburn Colburn of Lancaster; Wiley Colburn of Albany; and Carl Colburn of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Bean. There will be no services at the request of family. Arrangements are being handled by, Athens. James Edward Dickens

NELSONVILLE – James Edward Dickens, 66, of Circle 33 Road, Nelsonville died Monday March 1, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital of Nelsonville. He was born June 15, 1937 in Athens County, he was the son of the late Carl Edward and Kathryn Maxine Barnhart Dickens. He was a graduate of Chauncey Dover High School; he was retired from Athens Mold and Machine. He was a member of the Sons of AmVets of Chauncey, Sons of American Legion, Logan Moose Lodge and the Athens Redman Lodge. He is survived by a son Carl Dickens of Nelsonville, daughter Beverly (Butch) Cochran of The Plains; a special pet companion Elle Mae; five grandchildren, Charla, Stephanie, Lindsey, Misti, and Roger; four great-grand sons, Tyler James and Cody Daniel Fennell, Christopher Bryce Heck and Zachary Allen Smith. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Edna Markins Dickens, his second wife Betty Dickens, one brother Carl Everett Dickens. David A. McClain

ATHENS – David A. McClain, 71, of Athens, passed away Friday evening, March 12, 2004, after an extended illness. Born December 15, 1932, in Athens, he was the son of the late Aubrey and Gladys Moore McClain. David was a former employee of the State of Ohio, and the Athens County Garage, and retired from The Plains Water District. He was a member of the NRA, and was enjoying his retirement as an avid outdoorsman. He is survived by six children, Bill (Lisa) Hart of Athens, Debbie (Tom) Cornelious of Athens, Denise (Larry) Barnhart of Athens, Paula (Charlie) Black of Athens, David (Jenny) McClain of California, and Patrick (Laureen) McClain of Athens; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a very special long-time friend, Eleanor Breeze. Besides his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl M. Smith McClain; a daughter, Lynn A. Ross; and a half sister, Betty. Services will be held, Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at, Athens, with Pastor Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be at Wyers cemetery, Stewart. Bruce “General” Rubin

ATHENS – Bruce “General” Rubin, 53, of Athens, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home. Born August 14, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son the late Sidney and Belle Resnick Rubin. “General” had opened several businesses in Athens, including Harpo’s, and Chiccalini’s Pasta Palace. He was also a long-time participant in the Athens Men’s Open Softball League. Bruce is survived by his wife of 28 years, Anne Sessums Rubin; beloved daughter, Samantha W. Rubin; and a host of friends. Services will be held Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m., at, Athens, with Rabbi Mark Goldfarb officiating. Burial will be at Alexander cemetery, Athens. Virginia L. Goodwin

ATHENS – Virginia L. Goodwin, 78, of Athens, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born March 9, 1926, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Earl D. and Claire G. Brown Lee. During her career, Virginia was a legal secretary at the law office of the late Samuel B. Erskine; as well as at Ohio University for 23 years, serving as a Secretary in the Chemistry Department, and also in the office of the President of Ohio Univerisity before her retirement. Virginia was very active in the community, where she was a member of the local chapter of Professional Secretaries International, the Linda Lash Evans Group, the Child Conservation League, the Christian Women’s Fellowship Group #1, and also a member of the First Christian Church of Athens. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Richard) Cone of Athens; two sons, Michael (Candy) Goodwin of Athens, and John (Margy) Goodwin of Athens; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Goldie May Burke of Amelia, Ohio. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary W. Cook. Services will be held Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at, Athens, with Joseph Eubanks officiating. Stephen R. Brooks

ZALESKI – Stephen R. Brooks, 53, of Zaleski, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home. Born November 8, 1950, in Athens, he was the son of Donna Hudnall Brooks of Athens, and the late Kenneth Brooks. Steve was a graduate of Alexander High School, and served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a coal miner for the Meigs County Coal Mines, where he retired after 25 years of service. Steve was also a member of the Athens VFW, Post 3477 and the Athens American Legion, Post 21. Besides his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Aubreanna Wilson; a brother, Roger Brooks of Athens; and a sister, Jodi (Marty) Bailey of Guysville; and special friends John Swaim, and Pastor William Hixson. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Jimmy Brooks. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m., at the New Marshfield cemetery, with Pastor William Hixson officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Athens VFW and the Athens American Legion. Winifred E. "Winnie" Taylor

ATHENS - Winifred E. "Winnie" Taylor, 78, formerly of Athens died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Born August 17, 1925, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ina Norman Newman. Winnie belonged to Church Women United, and volunteered for the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes. She also served as a co-leader of a local troop of the Girl Scouts of America. A Trustee of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of which her late Aunt Lydia Margaret Nero was a founding member, Winnie also served terms as Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent and Treasurer. Winnie was a trusted and beloved housekeeper for several Athens area families. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Taylor; a son, Craig (Michele) Taylor; two grandsons, Jonathan and Brian; five siblings, Edward Newman, Letha Kennedy, James Newman, Herbert Newman, and Charles Newman; and special friend, Frances Raymond. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Taylor in 1986; two brothers George and John Newman; and a sister, Margaret Cunningham. Services will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at, Athens. Burial will be at West Union Street cemetery, Athens. Mabelmae Van Dyke

ATHENS – Mabelmae Van Dyke, 87, of Winfield Illinois, and formerly of Athens, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Wynscape Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Wheaton, IL. Born March 21, 1917, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Elizabeth Burleigh Frank. Mabelmae received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1967, and her Masters Degree in 1971 from Ohio University. She taught school for many years at the New Marshfield and Hillard School Systems. She is survived by a son, Fred (Linda) Van Dyke; and two granddaughters, Rachel and Liel. Mabelmae was preceded in death by two sisters, Forrest Martin, and Ethel, and a brother Nihle Frank. There will be no calling hours observed at the request of the family. Graveside services will be held Friday, at 10:00 a.m. at Alexander cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by, Athens.
