Robert "George" Judson

ATHENS - Robert "George" Judson, 57, of Guysville died unexpectedly Thursday June 10, 2004 in Meigs County. Born July 15, 1946 in Guysville, he was the son of the late James and Beatrice Shannon Judson. He was known as 'Timbercutter' and worked as a timbercutter presently working many years for Ascraft Logging. He is survived by his son, Robert (Maurina) Judson of Chesterhill; two daughters, Tammy (Donald) Eing of Millfield and Tracy (Keith) Clem of Stewart; his fiancé Robin Thornhill of Guysville; two stepdaughters, Sunshine (Roy) Roush of Guysville and Nicole Thornhill of Hanford, CA; a stepson, Nicholas Thornhill of Guysville and eleven grand children and one great grand child. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Sharon Judson. Services will be Monday at 1 PM at, Athens, with John Butcher officiating. Burial will be at South Canaan cemetery. Sylvia Matheney

ATHENS - Sylvia Matheney, 90, of The Plains, died Sunday afternoon, June 13, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center. She was born on March 17, 1914 in The Plains. She was the daughter of the late George and Ida Mae Scurlock Potts. She was a member of the New Life Assembly of God church and the Chauncey Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Merritt) Wilson of The Plains; a son, Bob (Mary) Sofronko of The Plains; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, George Sofronko; her second husband, Edgar Matheney; four brothers, William, John, Walt, and Wilbur Potts; three sisters, Faye Hunter, Dorothy Bobo, and Marie Dalton. JAMES SHAFER

James L."Jimmy" Shafer, 82, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, June 14, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home. He was born July 27, 1921 in Nelsonville, Ohio, the son of the late James W. and Mattie Blosser Shafer. He was married to Eileen Dewhurst Shafer, who survives, for 60 years. Jimmy was a partner, with his brother Bob, in the Shafer Sohio Station and he was the owner of Shafer‚s Restaurant and Lounge, Highlander Laundry and the Town and Country Drive Thru. He was a longtime Mason, a member of the Aladdin Temple, Scottish Rite and the Athens County Shrine Club. He was a member of the Nelsonville First Christian Church and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. In addition to his wife, Eileen, he was survived by a son and daughter-in- law, Steve and Susan Shafer of Nelsonville, a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Chuck Robinette, five grandchildren, Tina, Chris, Jill, Stephanie and Ali, three great grandchildren, Nathan, Alysha and Logan, a brother, Bob Shafer of Athens and five sisters, June and Neil Hoce, Ruth Brooker, and Vera Newman all of Nelsonville, Birchie Colbert of Parma and Margaret Campbell of Ruskin, Florida and many nieces and nephews, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Shafer, Alberta Collins and Amelia Evans. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M, Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville, with Pastor Paul H. Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call Friday, June 18, 2004 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 PM. Jerry R. Shumway

MILLFIELD - Jerry R. Shumway, 66, of Millfield went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Arthur James Cancer Hospital, Columbus. He was born March 9, 1938 in Millfield he was the son of the late Dwight and Clara Misner Shumway. He was retired from Abex and a former WalMart employee. He had many hobbies including, carpentry, candle making, crafts and hunting. He was a member of Oak Grove Wesleyan Church and attended The Bread of Life church. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife, Lana; four children, Tressa (Walter) Burdette of Glouster, Jerry Lee (Cindy) Shumway of Buchtel, Tammy (Richard) Nichols of Millfield, Jeff (Amy) Shumway of Millfield; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Jeannette (Jerry) Williams of St. Clairsville; a brother, Jim Shumway of Nelsonville; and several nieces. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Toni Lynne Shumway. Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at, Athens with Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop cemetery. Linda M. Smith

GLOUSTER - Linda M. Smith, 52, of Glouster died Monday June 21, 2004 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. Born August 22, 1951 in Mariah, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Flora Brassard Monette. She was employed at Ohio Public Employees Retirement Systems. She is survived by her husband, Herman; four children, Tara (Ron) Riley of Glouster, Tom Smith of Columbus, Ron Smith of Mansfield, and Steve (Missy) Smith of Columbus; five grandchildren, Hunter Riley, Jennifer and Jacob Smith, and Zachary and Molly Smith; a sister, Betty (Edward) Benner of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Norman (Shirley) Monette of Mariah, NY., Maynard Monette of Canadaiqua, NY., and Morris (Marcia) Monette of Cape Cod, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Theresa Monette and Yvonne Clarke; and a granddaughter, Morgan Riley. Phillip Michael Simon

Phillip Michael Simon, 55, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, June 23rd, 2004 at his residence. He was born March 5th, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio the son of Sonny Simon and Patricia Cramer (Lewis) Powers. He was formerly married to Toby Simon, and currently married to Karen (Sugden) Simon, who survives. Phil was a self employed welder who was wonderful with his hands, and will be dearly missed by all that knew him In addition to his wife Karen and mother Patricia, he is survived by one son, Dustin, four daughters, Sheena (Randy), Donna Jewel, Allison Ann, Heidi Lynelle, one grandchild, Stormi, two sisters, Kristi (Ted) Bonkowski, and Terrilynn Hafer. Phil was preceded in death by his father, Sonny Simon. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 27th, 2004 from 2-4 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Hazel Hunley

Hazel L. Hunley, 87, formerly of Nelsonville and Canal Winchester, passed away Monday, July 5, 2004 at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. She was born August 16, 1916 in Athens County, the daughter of the late John and Nellie Cheadle Fink. She was the widow of the late Robert Hunley. She was formerly employed at Nelsonville High School as a cook. She was affiliated with the Coshocton Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church. She is survived by two sons, Wayne (Maryann) Hunley of Coshocton and Arthur Hunley of Canal Winchester; one daughter, Rita Bullock of Coshocton; ten grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and one brother, Donald (Shirley) Fink of Nelsonville. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Johnny Fink and two sisters, Marie Vania and Violet Carroll. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, July 9, 2004 at Souers- Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Pastor Dean Pierce officiating. George Frederick "Ted" Freer

George Frederick "Ted" Freer, 66, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, July 5, 2004, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville. He was born September 14, 1937, in Nelsonville, son of the late George Frederick and Rosa Christina Baver Freer. He is preceded in death by his first wife Janet Leonard Freer and is survived by his second wife Sundy Blessing Freer of Nelsonville. Ted was affiliated with the Jehovah's Witnesses and was also a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union#24 (formerly #98). He is survived by two sons, George Thomas Freer of Detroit and Micah (Delinda) Tonelotti of Circleville; three daughters, Sue Gasbarrow of Hilliard, Tuesday Tonelotti of Mt. Gilead and Martina Richardson of Galloway; five grandchildren, Nina Marie Gasbarrow of Hilliard, Brody Tonelotti of Circleville, Raven Tonelotti of Mt. Gilead, Quinn and Ethan Richardson of Galloway; one sister, Peggy Galvin of Nelsonville; special friend Jim Loupe. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother James Frederick Freer and a sister Elsie Hoover. At the request of Mr. Freer he will be cremated and there will be a memorial service Saturday, 1 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 9110 Johnson Rd., Athens (directly off U.S. Route 33). JEAN CARTER

SHADE - Alice Jean Carter, 75, of Shade, passed away Thursday evening, July 8, 2004 at Four Winds Community in Jackson, following a brief illness. She was born May 10, 1929 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Elton Frost and Mary Bobo Frost Chubb. She was a 1947 Athens High School graduate, a homemaker, loving wife and mother, and worked as the housekeeper for Chi Omega Sorority in Athens for many years. Because of her love and dedication she was graciously made an honorary sister for Chi Omega. She is survived by a son, William A. (Cynthia) Carter Jr. of Shade; two daughters, Catherine (Steve) Thomas of Albany, and Constance Locke of Jackson; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Tucker of Athens, Lulu (Victor) Carsey of Parkersburg, and Marilyn (William) Wilhelm of Montana; two brothers, Harry 'Wimp' Frost and Edward (Janice) Chubb both of Athens; a brother-in-law Fred (Paula) Carter of California; two sisters-in-law, Mary Frost of The Plains, and Marjorie Carter of California; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Alfred Carter, Sr., her step-father, Warren Chubb; two brothers, Roscoe Frost and Robert Chubb. Services will be Monday at 11 AM at, Athens, with Deborah Carsey Knotts, niece of the deceased officiating. Burial will be at Clarks Chapel cemetery. Cleola Madge Power

Cleola Madge Power, 98, of Nelsonville, formerly of Friendship Village in Columbus, passed away Sunday July 11th, 2004 at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center in Nelsonville. She was born August 24th, 1905 in Monday, Ohio, the daughter of the late Stephen W. and Ella Mae (Clary) Barber. She was married to the late Otis D. Power who passed away in 1947. Cleola attended the Friendship Village Church of Columbus, was an avid Reds and Clippers fan, and was a very independent, self made lady. She is survived by a brother in law, John Shumaker of Columbus, sisters in law Phyllis Barber of Murray City, Jeanette Barber of Nelsonville, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Cleola was preceded in death by an infant daughter Joreen, Brothers; Frank, Delbert, Ralph, Stephen Jr., and Garrett, Sisters; Grace Darling, Hazel Bess, and Fern Shumaker. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 15th, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. DALE SOUTH

ATHENS - Donald Dale South, 71, of Hockingport, formerly of the Athens area, died early Monday morning, July 12, 2004 at his home. He was born July 22, 1932 in Athens, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rose Tucker South. He was a graduate of Amesville High School and was a former employee of McBee‚s and was one of the founders of Economy Supply. He was formerly self employed in the heating and cooling business. He was a founding member of Hockingport Christian Center and was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Kay South; three sons, David (Theresa) South of Athens, Tom South of Dayton, Mark (Jill Well) South of Athens; two step sons, Keith (Christy) Young of Nelsonville, Dave (Carol) Willoughby of Athens; a step daughter, Lisa (Dr. Roland) Barr of Carbondale, Ill; seven grandchildren, Teather Royce, John, Mike, DJ, Christopher, Mathew and Maverick South; seven step grandchildren, Brandon and Derek Young, Austin and Tyler Willoughby, Garrett, Harrison and Weston Barr; three great grandchildren; a mother-in-law, Faye Marie Leonard of Coolville. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Barbara Shirley South; three brothers, Ellis, Glenn and Harvey South. Services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Hockingport Christian Center with Rev. Sheldon Johnson officiating. Irene Freeman

Irene A. Freeman, 85, of Millfield, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at her residence. She was born November 14, 1918 in Athens County the daughter of the late Joseph and Fannie Stevens Jackson. She was the wife of the late Edward Earl Pyle who passed away in 1967 and her second husband, the late Donald Freeman who passed away in 1997. Irene was retired from the Belk Simpson Co., Athens and she attended the Salem Community Church. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Carsey of Athens; one son; Randy (Cindy) Pyle of Chauncey; a dog, Josh; a cat, Ziggy; nineteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and friends and special friend Marion Richardson. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, James Pyle; a daughter, Joyce Graves; a grandson, Timothy Carsey; and many brothers and sisters. Elizabeth M. Tolliver

Elizabeth M. Tolliver, 82, of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Grant Medical Center. She was born January 5, 1922 in Athens County the daughter of the late Walter and Rachel Parry Hillen. She was married to the late Ned L. Tolliver. She attended the Nelsonville First United Methodist Church. She is survived by a niece Marsha (Allen) Pendergrass Mosser of Johnstown; a great niece, Stephanie Wagner, three great nephews, Jason Mosser, J.B. Civille and Brian Civille; several great great nieces and nephews and a special friend, Bob Clark of Nelsonville. In addition to her parents and husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Hillen Pendergrass and Norma Hillen Gildow and a niece Judy Pendergrass Civille. Lavina Louise Lehman

Lavina Louise Lehman, 71, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, July 19, 2004 at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster. She was born November 18, 1932 in Haydenville, the daughter of the late George St. Clair and Flossie Hewitt Leffler. She was married to Clarence Calvin Lehman of Nelsonville for 51 years. She was retired from Brooks shoe factory and she enjoyed cooking. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Rev. Richard Edmund Roeder

Richard Edmund Roeder, 21, of Rockbridge, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at his residence. He was born August 2, 1982, in Logan, son of Karl E. (Terri) Roeder of Rockbridge and Paige (Tim) Olney Palmer of Ashville. Richard was a graduate of Logan Elm High School class of 2000, member of South Perry United Methodist Church and also served in the Navy. In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Eric A. Roeder and Aaron P. Roeder both of Circleville; two sisters, Heidi Renee Roeder of Stoutsville and Brittney Carroll of Mead; paternal grandmother, Pam Roeder of Rockbridge; maternal grandparents, Richard (Jackie) Olney of Circleville; stepfather, Rod Wolfe of Circleville; stepmother Marla Hastings of Stoutsville; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Herman Roeder and maternal grandmother Delores Ferguson. William “Bill” R. White

William “Bill” R. White, 76, of Buchtel, passed away Wednesday, July 21st, 2004 at his residence. He was born September 1st, 1927 in Buchtel, the son of the late William and Mary (Sheskey) White. He was married to Josephine “Jo” (Fydroski) White. She survives. In Lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions in Bill’s name be made to the Trimble Local Textbook Foundation, P.O. Box 187, Glouster, Ohio 45732. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s of the Hills Catholic Church, with Father John Mucha officiating. Interment will be at St. Patricks cemetery, Buchtel, where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
