James William Parsons

Athens - James William Parsons, age 77, of Athens, died Sunday morning, November 21, 2004 at his residence. He was the son of the late Thomas M. & Nancy Jane Gould Parsons, born July 2, 1927 in Nelsonville. Mr. Parsons was a baker working at Rauch’s Bakery, Court St. Bakery, Just Deserts, and Sylvia’s Restaurant. He was a member of VFW Post 7174, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, Chauncey AMVETS Post 53 and DAV Chapter 37. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Threatre and the Occupation of China. Mr. Parsons is survived by four daughters- Janie (Jim) Stewart of Albany, Suzie (Bill) Pidcock of The Plains, Sharon (Tom) Blackford of Chauncey & Cathy (Greg) Cochran of The Plains; a special grandson- Thomas J. (Angie) Parsons of Athens; grandchildren- Bryan, Jamie, & Jason Parsons of Athens, Shaun & Tiffany Pidcock of The Plains, Tom & Cassie Blackford of Chauncey and Lisa Cockran of The Plains; three sisters- Barbara Halt of Rockfalls, IL, Betty (Bic) Miller of Delaware, & Mary Kennedy of Columbus; several nieces and nephews; special friends- Matthew Grueser of Shade and John Levering of Nelsonville. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters- Thelma Parsons, Marie Story & Nancy Maynard; five brothers- Everett, George, Luster, Thomas, & Kenneth Parsons. Funeral service will be conducted Friday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. James Stewart with burial in Zion Church cemetery, The Plains. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 7-9PM. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Combined Honor Guard.

Norman E. Watts Sr.

Norman E. Watts Sr., 87, of Logan, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2004, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital of Logan. He was born November 6, 1917, in Fostoria, Ohio, son of the late Edward J. and Marie Kirchner Watts. He was the widower of the late Mildred Stenzel Watts. Norman was a retired Senior Engineer for General Electric in Logan. He also served in the Air Force during WWII. Norman was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the former Hocking Hills Country Club. He is survived by a son, Norman E. Watts Jr. and a daughter, Ruth Ann Watts both of Logan; a sister, Ellie Williams of Bucyrus. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Ed, Richard and James Watts; two sisters, Anna Fishborn and Edna Bradley. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at St. Paul‚s Episcopal Church, Logan, with the Rev. Katharin K. Foster, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery, Logan. ANNABELLE STREKAL

Athens - Annabelle Strekal, age 78, of Athens died Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident on US Rt. 50 West. She was the daughter of the late Gamaliel Edgar & Modelle Rice White, born May 2, 1926 in Athens. A graduate of Athens High School and Ohio University, Mrs. Strekal as an active member of MRDD Advisory Board, Red Cross Blood Bank Drives, Athens County Election Board Poll Worker, and a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Athens, D.A.R., and Athens County First Families. She was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in the W.A.C. Mrs. Strekal is survived by 4 daughters- Dr. Mary (Mike) Newman of Baltimore, MD; Mitzy (Scott) DeNoma of Cincinnati; Kitty (Mark) Luchte of Canon City, CO; and Jennifer Strekel of The Plains; 3 sons- Raymond Strekal of Terry, IA; Phillip Strekal of Albany and James Strekal of Mt. Airy, NC; 12 grandchildren- Jay, Anne, and Em Newman; Katie, Mike, Molly, John, and Sally DeNoma; Erin and Tyler Reger; Stephani Heintzman and Chris Luchte; two great grandchildren; and a brother William (Irene) White of LaJolla, CA. Beside her parents is preceded in death by her husband Raymond A. Strekal, DDS who also died in the automobile accident, and a brother, James E. White. Joint funeral services for Mrs. & Dr. Strekal will be conducted Saturday 10:00AM at St. Paul’s Catholic Church by Msgr. Patrick Gaughan and Pastor Lynn Miller. Cremation will follow the services. Friends may call at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Friday 2-4 and 7-9PM. Vigil for the Deceased will be conducted Friday 6:30PM at the funeral home. Maude Bailey

Maude Bailey, 81, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, November 13th, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. She was born July 5th, 1923 in Hollister, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ellis and Alma (Hook) Six. She was married to the late Hubert Bailey who passed away in 1992. She was a homemaker all her life, and was a member of the Happy Hollow Community Church. Maude is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Steven) Griffin of Nelsonville, Irene Bailey of Nelsonville, and sons Herbert Bailey of Millfied, Edward Johnson of Rhode Island, James Johnson of Colorado, Richard Johnson of Nelsonville, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, a brother, Richard (Norma) Six of Columbus, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sons Robert and Elsbert, several brothers, and one sister. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville. Internment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, New Addition Nelsonville. Friends may call Monday from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Jeffrey John Hiles

Jeffrey John Hiles, 63, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, November 12, 2004 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital in Logan. He was born August 29, 1941 in Hocking County, the son of the late Floyd and Vivian (Huls) Hiles. He was married to Cindy (Kreslin) Hiles for 24 years. She survives. Jeff was retired from the US Navy, served in the Vietnam War, was a lifetime member of the Nelsonville VFW, Logan AmVets, Lancaster American Legion, Hocking Valley Amateur Radio Club, the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association, Fleet Reserve Association, and he dearly loved animals and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Jeff is survived by a son, Brandon (Megahnn) Hiles of Nelsonville, a stepmother, Sally Hiles of Logan, granddaughters Lexi Paige and Hannah Leigh of Nelsonville, a brother Gary (Sue) Hiles of Logan, a sister Jennifer (Dean) Gumpf of Gallipolis, nieces and nephews, great nieces, and a great- great niece. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jeff’s name made to the Hocking County Humane Society. Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 15th, 2004 at 12:00 P.M. at Greenlawn cemetery, Veterans section. Burial will also be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville, where full military honors will be performed by the Combined Color Guard Unit. James L. Wilson

ATHENS - James L. Wilson, 90, of Athens died Friday, November 5, 2004 at his home. Born June 2, 1914 in Sanger, CA, was the son of the late Grover and Gracie Budd Wilson. He is a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Anne; and two daughters, Sharon Graham and Patricia Stevens. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Richard Wilson. Services will be Sunday at 2 PM at Clarks Chapel Church. Friends may call at the church Sunday one hour prior to the service. Military services will be conducted following the service by the Athens American Legion, Post 21 and the Athens VFW, Post 3477. Following the services the body will be cremated. Homer Riley Jr.

Homer R. "Buddy" Riley Jr., 26, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, November 5, 2004 at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. He was born April 28, 1978 in Athens County, the son of Homer (Brenda) Riley of Nelsonville and Karen Neil Riley of Glouster. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Anthony Riley of The Plains, a sister, Amanda (Trent) Patterson of Adelphi and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Donald and Frances Riley, uncles, Donny and Randy Riley and best friend, Jerry Lee Teal. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. DAVID M. SCHONAUER

Athens - David Michael Schonauer, age 61, of Athens died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at his residence after a brave battle with cancer. He was born October 27, 1943 in Euclid son of the late Fred & Mary Louise Ralls Schonauer. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, Cleveland, and Ohio University. Dave was a beloved husband to Brenda Ackroyd Schonauer; father to Kim (Joel) Hobbs of Albany, Chris Schonauer of Columbus, & Vicki (Dan) Augustine of Euclid; step father to Russell (Mandy) Stinchcomb of Pasadena, MD; Papa Dave to 14 grandchildren; brother to Tom (Sharon) Schonauer of Mansfield, Ken (Martha) Schonauer of Columbus, & Rich (Stephanie) Schonauer of Chardin and special companion to pet dog Suzi. He was a teacher at Euclid High School where he taught economic and government. He was known as a caring and patient teacher. Dave had also owned the Union Bar & Grill in Athens. He had a love for sailing, football, guitar, playing cards, fishing, bowling, and reading. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 175 E. 200th St., Euclid, Ohio on Saturday, November 13th at 10:00AM with Father John McNulty as celebrant. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the family for expenses. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Keith "Eddie" Gloeckner

ATHENS - Keith 'Eddie' Gloeckner, 70, of Athens, died Thursday night, Nov. 3, 2004 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born April 13, 1934 in Athens, he was the son of the late Lewis Francis and Ella Louise Wilson Gloeckner. He was retired from National Graphics in Columbus and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Athens. He was a US Army veteran serving in Germany. He is survived by four sisters, Frieda Shields of Athens, Irene (Harry P.) Cassey of London, Rosemary (Ben) Warner of Athens, Jean Edwards of Athens; two sister-in-laws, Vickey Gloeckner of Albany, Lois Gloeckner; two Aunts and one uncle and many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Charles Kammer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, George and Lewis 'Bill' Gloeckner. Services will be Saturday at 10:30 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, Athens with Pastor Lynn Miller officiating. Burial will be at New Marshfield cemetery where military services will be conducted by American Legion, Post 21 and Athens VFW, Post 3477. Friends may call at the, Athens on Friday from 5:30 to 8 PM and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Michael Irwin

ATHENS – Michael Irwin, 48, of Fort Lauderdale, Fl., formerly of Athens, passed away unexpectedly at his home on November 22, 2004. Born March 14, 1956 in Chincoteague, Va., and was the son of Peggy Irwin of Athens and the late Larry Irwin. Michael spent the last 30 years in the professional lighting industry and was well known for his exceptional abilities in light design and teaching others computer light design. He was also well traveled and especially loved Peru. He will be greatly missed by the many people who knew him. Besides his mother, he is survived by his sister, Kimberly (Randy) Lapp of Stewart; two brothers, David Irwin of Guysville and Stephen (Cari) Irwin of Gainesville, Ga; 9 nieces and nephews and one great niece. Besides his father, he is preceded in death by his grandparents. Graveside services at Alexander cemetery will be announced at a later date by, Athens. Florence A. Coon

ATHENS – Florence A. Coon, 83, of Athens, died Monday morning, December 6, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born June 7, 1921 in Athens, and was the daughter of the late Worthy and Sylvia Smith Dicken. She is survived by one daughter, Judy Driggs of Cleveland; one son, Larry (Wendy) Hysell of Nelsonville; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Coon; two sisters; and one brother. Services will be Thursday at 11 AM at, Athens, with Reverend H. Willard Love officiating. ROBERT A. SEBRING

Athens - Robert A. Sebring, age 77, of Athens and St. Croix USVI, passed away Monday afternoon, Dec. 6, 2004 at his home. He was the son of the late John H. & Ruth Moore Sebring, born Dec. 22, 1926 in Rodchester, PA. He owned and managed lumber companies, Sebring Building Center, Inc., in Chesterhill, Parkersburg, WV, and Athens. He was a builder of residential homes in and around the Athens community. Mr. Sebring was a member of Community United Methodist Church of St. Croix, USVI. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was in the Cadet Pilot Training in 1944. He was a licensed airplane pilot and at one time had his own plane. Mr. Sebring is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Hoon Sebring, married June 1, 1947; four sons- John (Kelly) Sebring of Chauncey, Robert (Susan) Sebring of Athens, Tim Sebring of Athens, and Mark Sebring of Athens; eight grandchildren- Danny, Bobby, David, Jeremy, Shauna, Bobby Ross, Kristen and Mary; six great grandchildren- Joshua, Miranda, Alexandra, Brandon, Jake and Ryan; brother- Ralph (Pat) Sebring of Munster, IN; sister- Leora Zawacki of Florida; mother in law- Goldie Hoon of Chesterhill; brother in law- Jim (Ann) Hoon of Cutler; and sister in law- Kay (John) Vanderhooft of Blue Ridge, GA. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a sister in law- Eleanor Lee Parsons and father in law Ross Hoon. Visitation will be held Wednesday 5-9PM for friends and family at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home. Cremation will take place. A private memorial service will be held Thursday 11:00AM at the funeral home with Pastor Roger Watson officiating. His ashes will be taken to St. Croix, USVI. Larry H. Hopps

Nelsonville - Larry H. Hopps, age 64, of Nelsonville died unexpectantly, Monday morning, Dec. 6, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital, Nelsonville. He was the son of the late Harry & Opal Hopps, born Nov. 13, 1940 in Parkersburg, WV. Mr. Hopps was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and had been a meat cutter for 47 years. He worked at grocery stores in the Athens & Parkersburg area. He was recently a Athens Messenger tube route carrier. Mr. Hopps had also pastured churches at Laurelville and S. Bloomingville. He was a 25 years area resident. He is survived by his wife- Christie Frank Hopps; a daughter- Melissa Hopps of Athens; three step children- Sarah Vore & fiancé Ben Gabriel of New Marshfield, Terry (Karen) Vore of Glouster, and Gary Vore of Glouster; grandchildren- Kayla Postle, Benjamin Gabriel, Jessica Vore: Ross, Shelby, & Megan Vore: Bradley, Brooklyn, Holly, Andrew, & Katlyn Vore and Cody Vore; a brother in law- Danny Frank of Jacksonville and a nephew- Josh Frank of Jacksonville. As to Mr. Hopps request, cremation will take place and no service will be observed. Mr. Hopps legacy lives on with his gift of life through organ and tissue donation. Flora Faye Lechleidner

Flora Faye Lechleidner, 86, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005 at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, Royal Oak, Michigan. She was born September 15, 1918 in Williams County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Walter Owen and Nellie Whaley Hadley. She was the widow of the late Charles Lechleidner. Flora and her husband managed Walters Five and Dime for many years and she was a clerk and bookkeeper at Foster‚s Pharmacy for many years, until it closed. She attended the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church and was a member and treasurer of the Ladies Venice Class. She was also a member of the former Rebecca Lodge, Nelsonville. He is survived by one son, Charles Vincent Lechleidner of Lancaster; one daughter, Mary Annette Lechleidner of Royal Oak, Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Flora was preceded in death by one sister, Fannie and five brothers, Kermit, Evan, Earl, Kenneth and Donald. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Internment will be at Connett cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Bertha Inez Zamorano

Shade - Bertha Inez Zamorano, age 92, of Shade, died Tuesday evening, Jan 11, 2005 at her home after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Dana VanNest & Clara Gilland VanNest Niggemeyer and her step father Frank Niggemeyer, born April 30, 1912 in Marion. Mrs. Zamorano attended school in the Burlingham area and had been employed at North American Aviation in Columbus. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Adelio Zamorano; son & daughter in law- Richard & Judy Bevan of Lancaster; two grandchildren- Penny (Floyd) Bowsher of Lancaster and Brian Bevan of Bremen; three great grandchildren- Shaun & Matthew Bowsher and Lori Bevan; a niece Ila Benedum of Columbus and a nephew, Jack Julien of Marathon, Fla. Besides her parents and step father she is preceded in death by two sisters, Audra Forsythe and Virginia Williams. Funeral service will be conducted Friday 2:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. James Lambert with burial in Burlingham cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Claude Franklin Davis

Claude Franklin Davis, 73, of Coolville, passed away January 11th, 2005 at his residence. He was born January 4th, 1932 in Stewart, Ohio the son of the late Benson and Martha (Vaness) Davis. He was married to Betty (Tippie) Davis for 42 years. She survives. Claude was retired from the Army after 22 years of service to his country, and early in his enlistment, was a member of the Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, was a lifetime member of AMVETS and the VFW, loved fishing, and was a devoted grandpa, loving husband and father He is survived by two sons, Bill Tippie and Bob Tippie of Coolville, two grandchildren, Aaron and Courtney Tippie of Nelsonville, two brothers, Bob Davis of Columbus and Jim Davis of Athens, one sister, Vickie (James) Jarvis of Stewart, and special friends, Gene (Ruby) Hill, David Gates, Gene (Tara) Hill II, and Lora Burgy. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Price, and Tom, sisters Norma and Mary, and a Grandson, Brandon. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville with Pastor Sheldon Johnson officiating. Internment will be at Stewart cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Athens Color Guard. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
