ATHENS – Jo Ann Whittaker, 63, of Athens, died Sunday evening, January 9, 2005 at Marietta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born January 28, 1941 in Athens County, and was the daughter of the late Velma E. Baker. She was a former employee of Kimes Convalescent Center, Echoing Meadows and Treadway Mail. She is survived by her husband, Howard Francis; seven children, Alva Whittaker Jr. of Van Buren, Arkansas, James Whittaker of Chillicothe, Joan Whittaker of Athens, Betty (Mick) Cunningham of Athens, David Whittaker of The Plains, Mike Francis of Watertown, and Mark Francis of Watertown; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Rosa Lee Klingenberg of Torch; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her mother, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Alva Whittaker in 1982. Services will be Friday at 11 AM at, Athens, with Dave Cogar officiating. THE PLAINS – Inez P. Bricker, 82, of The Plains, died Thursday, Jan 6, 2005 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center. Born Aug 9, 1922 in The Plains, she was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Allie M. Limberger Bricker. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Loraine Bricker. Services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at, Athens with Rev. Mark Dupler officiating. John H. Romine

Athens - John H. Romine, age 87, of Athens died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Glen Mutchler & Edna Mae Gilbert Romine, born Oct. 28, 1917 in New Marshfield. He was a 1935 graduate of Athens High School. John was a supervisor with Bridgewater/ Abex Corp., Superintendent with the State Highway Dept., former Athens Township Trustee, operated Romine & Sons Plumbing & Heating Co., and was a Security Officer at the O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was an auxiliary policeman with the Athens Police Dept (1956-76), Special Deputy for several Athens County Sheriffs, former Athens Township Constable (1954-83), a founding member of Richland Area Fire Dept.(1954-80) serving as Assistant Chief, and the first Chief of the Athens SEOEMS Station. John was a member of Athens Church of Christ, Savannah Lodge 466 F&AM (25 Year), Albany Chapter 558 OES, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Athens Co. Shrine Club; Tularosa, NM Lodge 49 AF&AM, Tularosa Basin Chapter 72 OES & Rocket Shrine Club of Alamogordo, NM. He was a member Albany Grange, Good Sam Camping Club, Barnyard Campers, & NCHA Woodpeckers, Alamogordo, NM Good Sam Camping Club, Athens Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army Advisory Board, SERTOMA, and former Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 53. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, receiving 8 Bronze Stars John is survived by two daughters- Patricia Setty of Albany and Sharron (Sid) Smith of Shade; a special daughter Lillian Collins of Athens; a step daughter Karen Strausbaugh of Las Vegas, NV; three sons- John E. (Mary) Romine of Tularosa, NM, David (Virgie) Romine of Alamogordo, NM, and Kenneth (Cathy) Romine of Reynoldsburg; 15 grandchildren and a special granddaughter and caregiver- Patty Lyn Meeks; 13 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; a sister in law Marie Romine of Mt. Sterling; five nieces- Mary Lou (Jim) Stiverson of Mt. Sterling and Jayne (Bob) Shellman of Albany, Pam (Jim) Slater of New Richmond, IN, Becky (Harry) Berry of Kettering, and Elizabeth (Bob) Baird of Sidney. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn Hoover Romine, 1987, his second wife Twila Smith Strausbaugh, 2002; a great grandchild Matthew Naegle; a great, great grandchild Danielle Nicole Hood; a sister Adrienne Daines; two brothers- Kenneth & Ivan Romine and a niece, Susan Hughes. Memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 13th, at 1:00PM in Jagers & Sons Funeral Home conducted by Willard Love, minister. Burial of ashes will be at Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 12 Noon until time of service. Savannah Lodge 466 will hold masonic services Thursday 12:45PM at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477 at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1900 Richmond Rd., Lexington, KY 40502.

Carol Mae Brady Runser

Carol Mae Brady Runser of Ames Twp., an artist, gardener, and homemaker, died at home surrounded by her family on January 7, 2005, after a five-month struggle with cancer. She was 68. Carol was born June 19, 1936, in Canton, Ohio, daughter of the late Edna and Carl Brady. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Karl Runser Jr.; a son, the Rev. Karl Runser III of Galeton, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie Runser-Turner and Brian Turner of Athens; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Erma Brady of Barberton, Ohio; a sister, Joanne Spann of Independence, Ohio; eight nieces and nephews; and many friends and pets. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Leo Spann; and special friends Judy Morgan and June Carver Roberts. Carol was educated at Norton, Ohio, public schools and Old Trail School at Akron, Ohio. A fine arts graduate of Ohio University, she studied lithography and painting. Besides those two fields, she worked in various disciplines including woodcuts and stained glass. She had a one-woman show of woodcuts and prints while living in Charlottesville, Va., after college. She also exhibited work at the Spectrum in Chincoteague, Va., Canton Art Institute, and the French Art Colony in Gallipolis. She was a partner with her husband in the operation of Oak Tree Press, producing note cards and related printed materials using antique type and presses. She and Judy Morgan founded the Christmas Showing in Athens, an annual art and craft sale that now benefits the Judy Morgan Scholarship Fund at Athens High School. Carol enjoyed nature, her many pets, and annual vacations at the Outer Banks. She raised flowers and herbs on their Ames Twp. farm. A member of the Athens Farmers Market for many years, she was one of the first vendors to sell cut flowers and flower arrangements at the market. Early in her career Carol was employed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and later in the Rare Book Department at the University of Virginia’s Alderman Library. A lifetime lover of books, she worked in Athens at the Athens Book Center and later at Little Professor Book Center. Her community volunteer projects included teaching in the Adult Basic Literacy Program in Athens County. She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Athens, and served on the committee to select a new organ for the church. Previously she belonged to McDougal United Methodist Church in Ames Twp. The funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynn Miller officiating. Burial will be in McDougal cemetery. Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Betty J. Taylor

Betty J. Taylor, 57, of New Straitsville, passed away Monday, January 3, 2005, at Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus. She was born December 7, 1947, in Columbus, daughter of the late Charles and Wilma Jean Frizzell. She was married to Donald Taylor of New Straitsville. Betty was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church. She was a born again Christian and a good Christian witness. In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, William Brumfield of New Straitsville; one daughter, Lillie Jean Brumfield of New Straitsville; five grandchildren; two brothers, David Paxton of Arkansas and John (Cathy) Jones of Columbus; two sisters, Wendy (Jim) Ribel of Fairmont, WVa. and Marty of Texas; cousin Marti (Bruce) Colegrove of Galloway; mother-in-law, Mary Taylor of Logan; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She is preceded in death by a grandson Michael D. Brumfield. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 183 E. Second St. Logan, with Pastor Tom Shank Jr. and Pastor Tom Walz, officiating. Interment will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens, Rockbridge. Betty Lou Moore

Athens - Betty Lou Moore, age 84 of Athens passed away late Sunday evening, Jan. 2, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. She was born April 21, 1920 in Athens the daughter of the late Claire C. & Mabel Saylor Dinsmoor. Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Albany High School. She was employed at McBee Corp. early in life and retired from Ohio University where she worked in food service as a bakery supervisor. She was a 50 year member of K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, serving as president twice. She was also a member of 8 et 40 Voiture 775, serving as Chapeau twice and was a charter member of VFW Post 3477 Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Moore is survived by three sons- Paul (Una Mae) Moore of New Marshfield, Lt. Col. Retired Alan (Ruth) Moore of Leavenworth, KS, and David Moore and his fiancé Mary Ann Bromley of Athens; a daughter in law- Minnie Moore of Lytle, TX; 12 grandchildren- Tony (Debbie) Moore, Anne Mae (Tony) Davis, Debbie (Monte) Quivey, Paul (Christina) Moore II, Barbara (Brian) Selegue, Patricia Flanigan, James (JoEllen) Moore, Henry Moore, Chad Moore & fiancé Andrea Zito, Shane Moore & fiancé Michelle Ennis, Adam Moore, and Aubrey Moore & fiancé Ryan Ammon; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a brother- Claire Jr. (Leslie) Dinsmoor of Salem, CT; an aunt- Lenore Sickels of New Marshfield; sister in law- Betty Rose Moore (Ray) Dunfee of Athens; a brother in law- Donald Moore of Lancaster. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband- Alfred “Al” Moore in 1993; a son- James Alfred Moore in 2003; a grandson- David Moore and a daughter in law- Dawn Moore. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday 1:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Willard Love, minister with burial in New Marshfield cemetery. Michael C. Haggerty

Michael C. Haggerty, 65, of Buchtel, passed away Tuesday, January 4th, 2005 at Doctors Hospital in Nelsonville. He was born October 8th, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Hubert and Lucille (Bonnie) Haggerty. He was married to Tammie (Easterling) Haggerty for over twenty five years. She survives. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.

Dwight “Whitey” “Herm” Vine

Dwight “Whitey” “Herm” Viney, 83, of New Straitsville, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005, at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Zanesville.
He was born May 29, 1921, in Glouster, son of the late James and Mary Viney Kirby.
Dwight worked in various coal mines and also hauled coal.
He is survived by two brothers, James H. (Alyce) Kirby and Kenneth Wayne (Carolyn) Kirby both of Zanesville; two sisters, Betty Franklin of Portsmouth, RI and Gertrude (Jack) Morgan of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Bernadine Keels and Shirley Wilson and his grandparents, Henry and Gertrude Viney. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 30 Main St. Glouster, with Pastor Charles L. Mayle Sr., officiating. Interment will be in Glouster cemetery, Glouster. Andrew Loudner Sr.

Andrew Loudner Sr., 60, of Baltimore, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster. He was born July 15th, 1944 in Nelsonville, the son of the late Andrew Loudner and Mary Opal Lange, who survives. He retired as a welder from the B&O railroad, was an Army Veteran during the Vietnam War, and enjoyed doing missionary work in Mexico and the United States. Andrew is survived by one son, Andrew (Staci) Loudner of Newark, one daughter Andrea (Robert) Laughton of Baltimore, stepsons Mike McQuaid of North Carolina, Richard (Karen) Karns of Idaho, stepdaughter Kelley (David) Snider of Gratiot, grandchild, Chase Andrew Loudner, brother Larry (Connie) Loudner of Florida, sisters Linda (Bob) Rowe of Florida, Sue (Robert) Peck of Albany, Judy (Michael) Hannan of Lancaster. In addition to his father, Andrew was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Bauer) Loudner in 1969. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Friday, January 28th, 2005 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville, with Pastor Brian Harkness officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. Military rites will be conducted by Combined Color Guard Unit. MILDRED LLEWELLYN

New Marshfield - Mildred N. “Grandma Mid” Llewellyn, age 84, of New Marshfield died Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital, Nelsonville. She was born July 24, 1920 in Carbondale, the daughter of the late Elston & Grace Six Mace. Mrs. Llewellyn was a lifelong Waterloo Township resident. She was a cook at the Waterloo Elementary School. She was a member of the New Marshfield Church of Christ, Albany Chapter 558 Order of Eastern Star and Gilham-Frank VFW Post 8804 Ladies Auxiliary, New Marshfield. She is survived by two daughters- Diane Rice & Lynn (Ronnie) Stephenson both of New Marshfield; two sons- Charles (Kathy) Llewellyn & John Llewellyn & his fiancé Janie all of New Marshfield; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; three sisters in law- Lacy Mace VanDyke of New Marshfield, Pearl Mace of Nelsonville and Betty Llewellyn of New Marshfield, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Bal” Llewellyn, 1989, a great grandson Eric Llewellyn, 1992; two sisters- Eloise Kincaid & Ruby Barber; and three brothers- Dwight, Lloyd, & Elston Mace, Jr. Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Buford Brown with burial in New Marshfield cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday 2-4 and 7-9PM. Vera L. Mullins

Athens - Vera L. Mullins, age 91, of Athens died Sunday morning, Jan. 2, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. She was the daughter of the late Arthur A. & Nellie M. Weatherby McNutt, born Oct. 18, 1913 in Athens. Mrs. Mullins was a sales clerk at the Belk’s Department Store in Athens. A 1932 graduate of The Plains High School, she was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Church of the Nazarene of Athens. She is survived by three daughters- Patricia (Darwin) Streets of Hampshire, Illinois, Mona Sheppard of Athens, and Janelle Mullins of Athens; a step daughter Anna Marie Meverden of Stockton, California; 19 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Everett Mullins in 1971; two sons- Ernest L. Mullins & Billy K. Mullins; four sisters- Thelma Stover, Edith Tedrow, Evelyn Foor, and Lola Riggle. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. James Stewart with burial in Alexander cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 7-9PM.

Shirley Febles, 91, formerly of Logan, passed away Monday, January 3rd, 2005 at The Lindley Inn in The Plains. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville.

ATHENS - Pearl Shawver, 83, of Athens, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center. Born January 23, 1921 in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Bertie Stahl Shawver. Services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at, Athens with Rev. H. Willard Love officiating. Sharon Kay Bowers

Sharon Kay Bowers, 58, of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2004 at her residence. She was born December 25, 1945 in Logan, Ohio, the daughter of Marcella Jane Gillilan Dorst of Nelsonville. Sharon was formerly employed at Goodyear, Logan and Hocking College. She loved her grandchildren and she enjoyed sewing and made and repaired many things for many of her family and friends. She attended the Buchtel United Methodist Church. Sharon is survived by her mother, Marcella; a son, Donald Bowers (Mary Ann) Bowers of Buchtel; three daughters, Barb (Chris) Kistner, Cara (Phillip Beeman) Bowers and Angela Mohney all of Grove City; two stepdaughters, Pamela (Tony) Sullivan and Cheryl (Jerry) Higgins both of Buchtel; eleven grandchildren, Billy, Taylor, Joe, Cheri, Sara, Jessica, Sarah, Nicole, Jarred, Addison and Marcella; a sister, Janie Spring of Logan; former husband, Donald Bowers of Grove City; two nephews, Randy Cullison and Michael Spring both of Logan and a special friend, Marcie Elliott of Buchtel. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, R.M. and Maude Stage Gillilan. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville, with Pastor David Shoemaker officiating. John H. Jacobs

John H. Jacobs, 88, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, December 29th, 2004 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster. He was born November 29th, 1916 in Morgan County, Ohio, the son of the late Melvin and Cornelius (Price) Jacobs. He was married to the late Mable (White) Jacobs. John was a dedicated member of the National Rifle Association, loved hunting for raccoons, and greatly enjoyed playing cards. He is survived by two sons, George (Angie O’Rourke) Jacobs of Carbondale, and David Jacobs of Athens, three daughters, Grace Spurrier of West Virginia, Roberta (George) Delrymple of Woodsfield, and Jane Jacobs of West Union, 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren, a sister in law Angie Jacobs of Glouster, and a very special Dog named Bud. In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a daughter Rose, special companion of 30 years Naomi Brooks, and brothers Frank and Miles. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 3rd, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville. Internment will be at Greenlawn cemetery.
