Mary Ann Finsterwald

MARY ANN FINSTERWALD Athens Mary Ann Finsterwald went to a better place on Wednesday, December 23, 2004. She will be missed by her beloved son and caregiver, Robert W., and his wife, Virginia, as well as her husband, Robert F. (all of Athens), daughters Charlotte (Lonnie) Caudill of Lexington, Kentucky, and Susan Maiden of Athens. Her passing will deprive her grandchildren of her presence in their lives: Lori Dodson, Montreal, Canada; Natalie Dodson, Chicago, Illinois; Josh Maiden, Athens; Julie Maiden, San Francisco; Emily Finsterwald, Athens, and Rachel Finsterwald, Athens. Mary Ann is also survived by a cherished sister, Dorothy Thompson, of Athens, a brother, Dallas Cornelius (Rosalyn) Smith, Marietta, Georgia, a brother in law Leslie Pierce of Pembrook Pines, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Ann dedicated her life to her family and friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to those who knew her. She was born December 6, 1931 in Athens County to Ed-------- and Mary Elizabeth (Coe) Smith who precede her in death. She is also preceded in death by brothers Elmer, Wade, Carlos, John and sisters Bertha (Leslie) Pierce and Betty Sanford. Mary Ann was a graduate of Rome-Canaan High School and formerly employed by Ambassador Laundry and Logan’s University Book Store. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Athens, where she taught Sunday School for several years as a young woman. She attended church services conducted by Pastor Bill Hixson at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 3:00PM at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by Rev. Denver Dodrill with burial at the Canaanville cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 3-5 and 7-9PM.

FLOSSIE DAVIS

Athens - Flossie L. Davis, age 98, of Athens passed away Thursday afternoon Dec. 23, 2004 at her home. She was the daughter of the late John & Bertha Moody Hook, born July 5, 1906 in Hollister. Mrs. Davis was a lifelong Athens County resident. She is survived by a son & daughter in law- Jack & Jo Davis of Athens; four grandchildren- Jerry, Jeff, Julie and Jackie and their families; 10 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband- Leslie Davis; two sons- Arthur & Allen Davis; a grandson- James Leslie Davis and several sisters & brothers. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 1:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Pastor Tom Beard with burial in West State Street cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 3-5 and 7-9PM.

Christopher Wayne Hutzelman

Athens - Christopher Wayne Hutzelman, age 15, of Athens passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 21, 2004 at Children’s Hospital, Columbus after an extended illness. He was the son of Rhonda Hutzelman of Athens, born June 24, 1989 in Athens. Christopher was a student at Beacon School. He is survived by his step father- Keith Allen McKnabb of Athens; maternal grandparents- Nelson & Barbara Brundige of Athens; a half sister Brittany McKnabb of Athens; a half brother- Kyle McKnabb of Athens and several aunts and uncles. Funeral service will be conducted at Friday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home with burial in New Marshfield cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 7-9PM.

Les W. "Toad" Champlin

The Plains - Les W. “Toad” Champlin, age 73 of The Plains passed away late Monday evening, Dec. 20, 2004 at his home. He was born Sept. 5, 1931 in Athens County, the son of the late Ernest & Stella Grigsby Champlin. Mr. Champlin was a longtime area resident. He was a watch repairman and jewelry maker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Mary McKibben Champlin; two sons- Les (Julie) Champlin of The Plains and Larry (Lisa) Champlin of Gahanna; six grandchildren- Les Champlin & Cory Champlin both of The Plains, Eric Champlin of London, Trent Champlin of Gahanna, Amy (Frank) Erb of Roanoke, Texas, & Brandi (Billy) Hans of Miamsburg; four great grandchildren Lauren Talley of Roanoke, TX, Corinne & Hunter Erb of Roanoke, TX and Grace Champlin of London; two sisters Betty (Hubert) Douglas of The Plains and Opal Hamilton of Columbus. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a sister Belva Champlin and two brothers Leo & Leroy Champlin. Graveside services will be held Wednesday 2:00PM at Hilltop cemetery, Millfield, conducted by Pastor William Hixson. Anna Margaret (Shorty) Ashton

ATHENS - Anna Margaret (Shorty) Ashton, age 83, originally of 6 Ransom Road died December 24, 2004 at ManorCare Nursing Center, Westerville. Born in Athens, she was the daughter of the late John and Edith Tippie Ashton. She was retired from Logan's Book Store after many dedicated years as an employee. She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Tom Chesser of Columbus, sister in-law Liz Ashton of Houston, Texas and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Eula and brothers Tom and Bill and sister in-law Ellen. There will be no calling hours or funeral. Thomas F. Baggs Sr.

Thomas F. Baggs Sr., 73, of Chauncey, passed away Friday, September 17th, 2004 at his residence. He was born April 11, 1931 in Columbus, the son of the late William and Edith (Hutchison) Baggs. He was married to Donna (Morgan) Baggs for 53 years. She survives. Tom worked and retired as a layout man, served in the Air Force during the Korean War, and was a member of The Centerburg Christian Church. He is survived by three sons, Thomas (Dorothy) Baggs Jr., of Chauncey, Mark (Beth) Baggs of Mt. Vernon, Joseph Baggs of Martins Ferry, one daughter, Marlene (Steve) Potkoski of Adena, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, two brothers, James and Warren Baggs of Columbus, and one sister, Martha (Charles) Stoner of Florida. He was preceded in death by a son Alan, a brother, Paul and a sister, Geraldine. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Tom’s name to Appalachian Community Hospice (Athens County) 280 East State Street, Athens, Ohio 45701. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, New Addition, Nelsonville. Jacqueline Smith

Jacqueline Sue 'Nena' Smith, 57, of The Plains, passed away Friday, December 17, 2004 at Doctors Hospital West, Columbus. She was born March 10th, 1947, the daughter of Joe Burch Sr. and the late Betty Hickman Burch. In addition to her father, she is survived by one son, Curtis (Cindy) Pancake of Nelsonville; one daughter, Kimberly (Jason Lawson) Smith of Chauncey; six grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Caleb Lawson, Cheyenne Pancake, Colton Pancake, Leslie Downs and Stephanie Jackson; two brothers, Joe Burch Jr. of Chauncey and Shane (Shannon) Burch of Carbon Hill; and three sisters, Betty Jo (Dave) Wachenschwanz, Ginger (Stace) Mender and Carla (Jim) Sprott of Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville with Pastor King Kelly officiating. Birgie E. Six

Birgie E. Six, 87, of Athens, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2004 at Riverside Hospital, Columbus. He was born March 1, 1917 in Athens County, the son of the late Leonard and Elsie Morgan Six. He was married to Viola Pierce Six and would have been married 64 years on December 24. Mr. Six was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and was a 50 year member of The Plains V.F.W Post 7174. He has been president of the Nelsonville Senior Citizens for the past 10 years and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 239 and a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows. In addition to his wife, Viola, he is survived by four sons, Ronald (Ruth) Six of Nelsonville, Rick (Peg) Six of Athens, Vernon (Kim) Six of Albany and Ray (Betty) Six of Nelsonville; one daughter, Leona (Richard) Timblin of Guysville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, one brother, Harold Six of Nelsonville; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy (Charlie) Grinstead and Linda (Richard) Holcomb all of Millfield; a brother-in-law, John Pierce of Chauncey; a sister-in-law, Mary Pierce of Salem; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Roy and Louise Hamilton and John McGuire all of Athens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, James E. Six and Dennis Six; two brothers, Ralph Six and Richmond Six and a sister, Lucille Pierce. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville. Interment will be at Hilltop cemetery, Millfield. Bert DeVeau

The Plains - Burt DeVeau, age 81, of The Plains died Saturday evening, Dec. 18, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 25, 1923 in Corona, New York the son of the late Harry H. & Grace Ann Demarest DeVeau. He was Professor Emeritus of Ohio University having taught for 43 years during which he received the University Professor Award and Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award. Professor DeVeau chaired both departments of Agriculture and Economics, serving the area farming and agriculture community in various capacities, conducting a Product Development Project for Southeastern Ohio for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and was President of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. He received a meritorious award for 23 continuing years of officiating from the Ohio High School Athletics Association and was a longtime member The Rotary Club of Athens, which established an athletic scholarship in his name. He had a lifelong involvement with Christian Ministries including Campus Crusade for Christ, Circus Tent Ministries, youth groups, and extensively served on governing boards and as a Sunday School Teacher since arriving in Athens in 1950 and since the early ‘70’s with Christ Community Wesleyan Church, of which he is a member. Professor DeVeau was a decorated officer in the 8th Air Force during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. He is survived by two sons and daughters in law- Ron & Cathy DeVeau of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Ken & Chris DeVeau of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren-Vanessa, Camela, & Zachariah DeVeau of Sarasota, Fla., Daniel DeVeau of Kill Devil Hills, NC and a step grandson- Luke Doyle of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and a sister- Muriel Tatem of Old Westbury, NY. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lois Ann Kalmeyer DeVeau, in 2001 Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. Neil Hoce

Neil Hoce, 68, of Nelsonville, died December 16, 2004 in Doctors Hospital in Nelsonville. He was born June 8, 1935, the son of the late Charles and Mary Louise Pritchard. He was married to June Shafer Hoce of Nelsonville. Neil was a retired eighth grade science teacher at the former Nelsonville City Middle School for 30 years. He loved nature and was seen daily with his faithful companion 'Fritz', his German shorthaired pointer. He was a member of the Nelsonville Elks Lodge BPOE #543, Knights of Pythias and the National Wildlife Federation. In addition to his wife, June, he is survived by two sons, Kris (Shelly) Hoce of Canfield and Charley (Joanele) Hoce of West Manchester; a daughter, Marjilou Cardaras of Lancaster; two stepsons, Jeffrey (Gail) Fisk of Worthington and Rex (Marilyn) Fisk of Buchtel; two step daughters, Nancy (Jim Sandon) Flowers of California and Martha (Mark) Payne of New Port Richey, FL; five grandchildren, Noelle (Derek) Vohlken, Jessica Cardaras, C.J. Hoce, Garrett and Gibson Hoce; one great grandchild, Kayla Rose Vohlken; five step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; one aunt, Margaret (Bob) Malloon of Kettering and two special friends, Gerald Hoffman and Don Newton. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, December 20, 2004 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday at the funeral home where an Elks service will be conducted at 7:30 PM. Willam H. Shumate

ATHENS - Willam H. Shumate, 84, of Athens, died Thursday, December 16, 2004 at his home. Born Nov. 10, 1920 in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late William Orsel and Edna Hughes Shumate. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and retired from the Dept. of Agriculture with 35 years of service. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Ruth; three daughters, Ellen (Jim Smith) Shumate of The Plains, Karen Barnhart of The Plains, Nancy Shumate of North Hampton, Mass; two grandchildren, Derek Barnhart of Athens, Jason Barnhart stationed in Norfolk, VA; a great granddaughter, Breah Elizabeth Barnhart; a sister, Janet Shumate of Jackson. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother killed in WWII Robert Shumate. Graveside services will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at Oak Hill C.M. cemetery in Oak Hill. Francis “Dick” Young

Francis “Dick” Young, 88, of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, January 16th, 2005 at O’bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. He was born December 27th, 1916, in Waterloo Township, the son of the late Grover and Edith (Dowler) Young. He was married to Mabel (Cunningham) Young for 44 wonderful years. She passed away September 2nd, 1984. Dick was a coal miner during his youth, and retired from the Athens County Engineers Office as a truck driver after 30 years of service. He loved attending the Ohio University Women’s Basketball games with his two dear friends, Sue Ellen Miller and Marilyn Shealy. He is survived by two brothers, George (Dorothy) Young and Paul (Pat) Young of Athens, one sister, Garnet Smith of Nelsonville, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Dick was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabelle Brewer and Alice Walker. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 20th, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Burial will be in New Marshfield cemetery. HAZEL L. NEUTZLING

Athens - Hazel Lorene Neutzling, age 92, formerly of Selby Road, Athens, passed away late Tuesday evening, October 26, 2004 at the home of her daughter in Albany. She was born June 17, 1912 in Meigs County, the daughter of the late James Elmer and Mary Catherine Hoisington Foreman. She attended New Marshfield Church of Christ and was a member of First Christian Church, Athens. She is survived by her daughter & son in law- Marilyn & Rodney Howery of Albany; two grandchildren- Roni Dea Howery of Albany and Deron Howery of Albany; four great grandchildren- Amanda, Anthony, Hannah, and Dani Howery all of Albany; a great, great grandchild- Tyler Jackson of Albany; two sisters- Ola Shaulis of New Marshfield and Audra Rupe of Zanesville; a brother- Leo Foreman of Valiant, OK; sister in law- Doris Foreman of Athens; special nieces and nephews- Brenda (Larry) Lambert of Athens, Debra (Scott) Lawrence of Middletown, Lloyd (JoAnn) Martin of Albany and Donald (Cindy) Martin of Rutland. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Paul Neutzling in 1991; three sisters- Pauline Lindamood, Margaret Martin, and Opal Riley; two brothers- Roger and Wallace Foreman. Funeral service will be conducted Friday 1:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Buford Brown with burial in Athens Memory Gardens. ATHENS – Larry “Buck” Rutter, 64, of Athens, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Ada L. Abram, 77, of Buchtel, passed away Sunday February 6th, 2005 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Bert Kozma

Millfield - Bert Kozma, age 91 of Millfield, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 3, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. He was born Oct. 30, 1913 in Athens Twp., Hocking (The Plains), the son of the late Sigmund & Julia Varga Kozma, Sr. A resident of College Hill, Millfield, since 1941, Bert was a dispatcher and a coal miner for Poston Consolidated, Gem, Sunday Creek, and Peabody Coal Companies. He attended school in Millfield and was an associate member of the Millfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Bert was a member of UMWA, Chauncey Dover Lions Club, Charter Member of Athens Co. Historical Society, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, DAV 37, and VFW Post 9866. He was a member & Past Master of Trimble Lodge 557 F&AM, member & Past Patron Thea Chapter 192 OES, Past Presiding Officer & member Athens York Rite Bodies, Knight of the York Cross of Honour, member of Ohio Priory 18 KYCH, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Athens Co. Shrine Club and Knight Masons of Ireland. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio. He was also a member & Past Exalted Ruler of Nelsonville Elks 543 BPOE. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre with the 90th Infantry Division. Bert was a recipient of the Purple Heart with Clusters and the French Croix de Guerre during the Battle of the Bulge. He is survived by his wife Alice “Sally” Newburn Kozma; a sister, Julia Hayes of Columbus; a brother, Sigmund (Virginia) Kozma of Athens; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters, Elinor Bordy & Sophia Kozma; five brothers, Lewis, Carl, Julius, Calmon, & Alex Kozma. Funeral service will be conducted Monday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by Rev. Steve Bentley with burial in Hilltop cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 2-4 and 7-9PM. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Combined Honor Guard. Masonic services will be held Sunday 7:30PM by Trimble Lodge 557 F&AM and Elks services will be held 8:00PM by Nelsonville Elks 543 BPOE both at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Center for Children, Children’s Dyslexia Center, 290 Cramer Creek Court, Dublin 43017.
