Merritt F. Gilkey, age 64, of Rutland formerly of Doylestown and Athens, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, 2005 at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Carl Edgar Johnson

Canaanville - Carl Edgar Johnson, age 77 of Deleon Springs, FL. died at his home Friday, January 28, 2005. He was born April 2, 1927 in Marietta, the son of the late Roy C. & Katie Swain Johnson. He was employed at Pan American Airlines in Miami, FL. for 21 years and Jacksonville Naval Air Station as an aircraft engine mechanic for 18 years. He was a member of 1st Baptist Church and the RC Radio Flying Club in Florida. Mr. Johnson was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War and the Berlin Air Lift. He is survived by his wife and caregiver, Florence Johnson; two sons, Jeffrey C. Johnson of Miami, FL & David R. Johnson of Mt. Plymouth, FL; six step daughters- Estelle Cleveland of Orlando FL, Bonnie Lake of Independence, KY, Wanda Jordan of San Diego, CA, Ruby Gaster of Whiteman AFB, MO, Shelia Ainsile of Evansville, IN, & Rebecca Hartman of Newbury, IN; five step sons- John H. Cleveland of Waterloo, IL, David Cleveland of New Carlisle, Bill Cleveland of San Francisco, CA, Bob Cleveland of Bunnell, FL, & Richard Cleveland of Deltona, FL; 35 grandchildren; two sisters- Thelma Withem & Virginia Darnell both of Canaanville. Besides his parents his is preceded in death by a half brother, Harry Medley. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday 11:00AM at Canaanville cemetery. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477 Honor Guards. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Volusia/ Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

John E. Coakley

John E. Coakley, 59, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005 at Doctors Hospital Nelsonville.

Harry Shirley Wright

ATHENS - Harry Shirley Wright, 84, of South Canaan Road, Athens, died Wednesday evening, September 7, 2005 at his home. He was born November 18, 1920 in Canaanville, and was the son of the late Ralph Gilbert and Clara Shirley Wright. He was a graduate of Rome-Canaan High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving in the Phillipines and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He is survived by his daughters, Clara Shirley Wright of Athens, and Patti L. Weaver of IL; son-in-law, Llewelyn D. Weaver (Maj, USAF Ret.); grandchildren, SPC Dawn Weaver, USA, Germany, Tara Weaver, IL., Jared Weaver, IL., Sgt. Jason Weaver, USMC, MI., and A1C Patrick Weaver, USAF, AK.; and great-grandson, Jonathon Weaver, AK. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Leodas (Lody) Wright. Services will be Saturday at 1 PM at with Rev. Monte McCune officiating. Burial will be in South Canaan cemetery where military services will be conducted by the Athens American Legion, Post 21 and Athens VFW, Post 3477. Gerald R. Reeves, 63, of Glouster, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2005 at his residence.

Isaiah Lee and Noah Edward Barron

Isaiah Lee and Noah Edward Barron, infant twin brothers, passed away Thursday, September 1st, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. They were the sons of Michael and Susan (Roberts) Barron of The Plains, Ohio. In addition to their parents, they are survived by a brother, Tre Michael Barron, one sister, Nakayla Marie Barron both of The Plains, Maternal Grandmother Judy Roberts of Nelsonville, and paternal Grandparents Eloise (Bill) Canada of Montgomery, WVa. They were preceded in death by their Grandfathers, Eddie Roberts and Henry Barron. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 7th, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Reverend Michael Thomas officiating. RUTH JUMP, 91, formerly of Athens passed away January 29th after an extended illness.

Elizabeth Newman Karshner

Elizabeth Newman Karshner, 85, of Buchtel, passed away Friday, January 28, 2005 at Doctors Hospital Nelsonville, following an extended illness. Elizabeth was born April 11, 1919 in Buchtel and was the youngest of ten children of the late George and Susie Gabel Newman. She was the widow of her first husband, the late George House and her second husband, the late James R. Karshner. Elizabeth was a longtime member of the Buchtel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Her willingness to pitch in on any project and tirelessly assist anyone in need will be missed. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a stepson, Jay Karshner of Columbus. In addition to her parents and husbands, Elizabeth was preceded in death by sisters, Anna (Clarence) Tolliver, Ruth (Harry) Kieffer, Genevieve (Delmar) Martin and Mary (Wayne) Mock and brothers, Carl, William, Ralph, Nick and George Newman. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Pastor David Shoemaker officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call Sunday from 5-8 P.M. and Monday from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Goldie L. Miller, age 99, formerly of The Plains went home to be with her Lord on Thursday evening, Jan. 27, 2005 at Russell’s Nursing Home, Albany.

Linda Lou Licht

ATHENS - Linda Lou Licht, 62, of Athens died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis. She was born October 17, 1942 in The Plains and was the daughter of the late Paul and Ida Gabriel Hamilton. She loved life and enjoyed bingo, the outdoors, animals, flowers and motorcycles. She is survived by her husband Kim 'Doc'; three sons, Steven Gould of Perry, OH, Rodney Gould of Heath Springs, SC, and Jason Licht of the home; two grandsons, Troy and Blaine Gould; two sisters, Diana (Jack) Haddox of Belpre and Cindy (David) Elliot of Galax, VA; and three brothers, Bob (Janet) Hamilton of Columbus, Chuck (Pandy) Hamilton of Athens, and Ronny (Tammy) Hamilton of Athens. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Stacy Gould; two brothers, Larry and David Paul Hamilton. A memorial service will be announced at a later date by, Athens. Robert D. Clark

Robert D. Clark, 86, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, January 26th, 2005 at Doctors Hospital Nelsonville. He was born May 20th, 1918 in Carbon Hill, the son of the late Lee and Rosa (Evans) Clark. He was married to his wife, Helen (Morman) Clark, who passed away previously. He owned and operated Clark’s Roofing for over 35 years. He was a WWII veteran and was an active member of the Combined Color Guard for 23 years. He also was a member of the Nelsonville VFW, and Murray City American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, OSU Basketball, and taking long walks Bob is survived by two sons, Robert (Rebecca) Clark, and Greg (and his fiancée, Gale) Clark, both of Nelsonville, special grand daughter Alison Clark of Nelsonville, one brother, Ralph (Dorothy) Clark of Columbus, one sister, Shirley Dye of Columbus, and several nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by sisters, Doris Thacker, Betty Long, and Vera Blackburn, a brother, Ray Clark, and special friend, Elizabeth Tolliver Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 31, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Jerry D. Rutter

Jerry D. Rutter, 65, of New Lexington, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Fairfield Medical Center of Lancaster. He was born June 20, 1939, in Millfield, son of the late Howard and Bertha Rutter. He is preceded in death by his wife Helen Marie Stevenson Rutter. He is survived by eight sons, Donald, Ralph, Jimmy, Timmy, Larry and Roy all of Columbus, William and Shawn (Rhonda) both of New Lexington; four daughters, Linda (Terry) Harrison, Vicky (Randy) Harrison, Rhonda Rutter and Elizabeth Rutter all of Columbus; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; one brother, Earl Rutter of Glouster; three sisters, Doris (Dwight) Sanborn and Eva Shaw of Columbus and Helen Shirkey of New Lexington. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Raymond Rutter; one sister, Margaret Braglin. Funeral services will be held Friday 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 30 Main St. Glouster, with Tim Seevers, officiating. Interment will be in Millertown cemetery, Corning. Audrey Lowry

Audrey Lowry, 83, of Carbon Hill, passed away Thursday, January 20th, 2005 at Logan Health Care Center. She was born July 23, 1921 in Athens County, the daughter of the late Floyd and Bertha (Frazee) Heightland. She was the wife of the late Denver Lowry. She is survived by two sisters, Levella Schurlock of Athens, and Lois Jean (Jack) Lightle of Washington Courthouse, and a very special niece, Dianna (Bill) Miller of Carbon Hill. In addition to her parents and husband, Audrey was preceded in death by brothers Floyd and Orville Heightland, and sister’s Enid Warren, Anna Belle Coffman, and Leta June Hart. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Pastor Rick Bennington officiating. Charles C. Merle

Charles C. Merle, 66, of Logan, died Thursday, January 20, 2005, at his residence after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born December 5, 1938, in Indiana, son of the late George C. Merle and Anna M. Waterman Glaze. He was married to Brenda S. Wright Merle of Logan. Charles was a veteran of the United States Army and also a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Marianne (John) Cummings and Michelle (Ted Huffman) Merle; seven grandchildren, Charles, Alexander, Sean, Aaron, Courtney, Celina and Jacob; three sisters, Sue Schnarr, Patricia Schnarr and Norma Kungis; numerous family and friends. He is preceded in death by a father-in-law, Gordon M. Wright. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 183 E. Second St. Logan, with Pastor Frank McKim, officiating. Interment will be in Knollwood cemetery, Logan. Mildred L. Stedman

Athens - Mildred L. Stedman, age 90, of Athens died Wednesday morning, Feb. 23, 2005 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. She was the born Aug. 31, 1914 in Coolville, the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin & Mattie Leona Reed Creamer. Mrs. Stedman attended school in Coolville and Torch and was a member of the Union United Methodist Church. She moved to the Athens area in 1933. She is survived by a daughter, Eleanor Breeze of Athens; grandchildren- Christina (Alfred) Morales of Corning, CA, Jaynie (Dan) Dailey of Guysville, Robert (Connie) Dishong of Kentucky, and Carol (Ken) Kovaleski of Dayton; eight great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, David A. McClain Family, Thelma Dawson, and Audrey Shaw. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Stedman, 1991; a daughter, Opal Dishong; a grandson, James Dishong, a son in law, Bill Breeze; five sisters, Milford Holman, Gladys Brown, Bernice, Goldie & Margaret Creamer; four brothers, John, Hamer, Kenneth and James Creamer. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday 1:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. Frank Crofoot and Rev. Helen Kline with burial in Athens Memory Gardens. LaVerne P. “Vernie” Hansen, age 82 of Athens died late Sunday evening, Feb. 20, 2005 at Russell’s Nursing Home, Albany.

Edith V. Lowery, 94, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, February 21, 2005 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.

S. Buford Leedy

The Plains - S. Buford Leedy, age 66, of The Plains died Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005 at his home. He was born June 17, 1938 in Mingo Co., WV the son of the late Kelly & Sue Johnson Leedy. Mr. Leedy retired from Ohio University as a groundskeeper. He was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church, Athens. He is survived by his wife, Helen Gilkey Leedy; two daughters, Shirley (Kenny) Rutter of The Plains and Ginger (Ron) Good of Wellston; three grandchildren, Tracy & Jennifer Rutter and Kassie Good; two sisters, Essie Hall of Top Most, KY and Alice (Bill) Cheatam of Jacksonville; and a brother, Clarence (Della) Leedy of Millfield. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by several sisters and brothers. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Graveside Service will be conducted Monday 11:00AM at Athens Memory Gardens by Pastor Dan Millen. Memorials may be made to the 7th Day Adventist Church, 171 Morris Ave., Athens 45701. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens
