Alston I. "Abe" Hoover

ALSTON HOOVER Alston I. "Abe" Hoover, 76, of Hideaway Hills, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2005 at his residence. He was born December 25, 1923 in Franklin County, the son of the late Alston I. and Phoebe Helen Miller Hoover. He was married to Mary L. 'Pat' Schneider Hoover, who survives, for 55 years. He was retired from Columbia gas where he was a welder and was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran. He attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Fort Seybert, West Virginia and was a member of the Ruritan club in West Virginia. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Bob (Barb) Hoover of Seattle, WA; two daughters, Bev Norris of Logan and Marilyn Wyatt of Hideaway Hills; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Herbert (Wanda) Hoover of Phoenix, AZ and John (Evelyn) Hoover of Upper Sandusky; a sister, Janet Casey of Columbus and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lowell Hoover and a sister, Margaret Hull. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. Second St., Logan. At Mr. Hoover‚s request, he will be cremated. Friends may call Tuesday from 12:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Central Ohio Parkinson Society, 1380 Dublin Rd., P.O. Box 18313, Columbus, Ohio 43218- 0313. Lillian P. Knudson, age 99, of Athens passed away early Thursday morning, May 5, 2005 at her residence at Lindley Inn, The Plains.

Harold L. Sycks

Harold L. Sycks ATHENS - Harold L. Sycks, 92, of Athens, died early Thursday morning, September 1, 2005 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was born January 17, 1913 in Coshocton, Ohio and was the son of the late Edward and Florence Hall Sycks. He was a member of the Poston United Methodist Church. He is survived by three children, Juanita (Willard) Coon of Athens, Carolyn (Reuben) Rickard of Albany, and Harold 'Buddy' (Sande) Sycks of Athens; four grandchildren, Scott (Valeria) Thompson, Vickie (Bill) Elliott, Kevin (Jodi) Rickard and Jeanna Sycks; seven great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Weekley of Hebron; and a brother, Jack (June) Sycks of Shade. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sycks; one granddaughter, Karen Sites; two brothers, Stanley and Lawrence; and three sisters, Thelma Green, Margaret Tittle, and Lavina Sycks. Services will be Sunday at 1 PM at with Earl James officiating. Burial will be in Alexander cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 to 8 PM. Margaret L. Phillips

Margaret L. Phillips, 83, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains. She was born February 18, 1922 in Athens County, the daughter of the late John and Nancy (Hopkins) Smith. She was the widow of the late John L. Phillips. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 15, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Reverend Michael Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Hilltop cemetery, Millfield. Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home. Charles W. “Chuck” Davis

Hockingport - Charles W. “Chuck” Davis, age 80, of Hockingport died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 9, 2005 at his home. Born Jan. 14, 1925 in Chauncey he was the son of the late Joseph T. & Sylvia B. Pritts Davis. He was employed at Abex Corp. for 28 years and had operated Riverside Bait & Tackle Shop in Hockingport for several years. A former resident of Chauncey and Rt. 2 Athens, he was a lifetime member of The Plains VFW Post 7174 and a member of Trimble Lodge 557 F&AM. Mr. Davis was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre and receiving two bronze battle stars. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Leta Barnhart Davis; a daughter, Dorothy (Don) Keels of Athens; two sons, John (Patti) Davis of Hockingport and Randy (Denise) Davis of Stewart; three grandchildren, Charles (Cassie) Davis of Coolville, Danielle (Gregory) Ortegae of Denton, Maryland, and Allison (Billy) Watkins of Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Blanche Green of Lewisville, Texas; a brother, Earl (Madonna) Davis of Dayton; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by four sisters- Thelma Watson, Margaret Stephenson, June Dyson and Dorothy Davis; two brothers- William “Rube” and Clifford “Dink” Davis. Funeral service will be conducted Friday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. James Lambert with burial in Hilltop cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 7-9PM. Masonic services will be held Thursday 7:30PM at the funeral home by Trimble Lodge 557 F&AM. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Combined Color Guard.

Frederick Michael (Fred) Cluff, 59, of Athens, a well-known and long-time Athens businessman, died in an automobile accident in Hocking County on Aug. 8, 2005.

Ryan Johnson

Ryan Johnson, 26, of The Plains, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2005 at his residence. He was born May 24, 1979 in Logan, the son of Chris Johnson and Ginger Hitchings. Ryan was a volunteer fireman in The Plains, an EMT for HealthPro, and a dispatcher for SEOEMS. He enjoyed wrestling, Star Trek, and computer gaming. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Derek Johnson of Carbon Hill, Maternal Grandparents Frank and Donna Lopez of Nelsonville, Paternal Grandmother Virginia Newlun of Nelsonville, Paternal Grandfather Woody Johnson of Logan, and Paternal step-Grandmother Leora Johnson of Logan, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, very special friends, Corey and Jennifer Lenigar of Glouster, and a special cousin, Steven Romine of Albany. He was preceded in death by a paternal grandmother, Waveline Johnson, Paternal grandfather Bruce Newlun, and Maternal grandfather, Jack Hitchings. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Reverend Harold McConnell officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call Thursday from 2-8 PM at the funeral home. Mary C. Burson

Athens - Mary C. Burson, age 81, of Athens passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 7, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born Dec. 17, 1923 in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. & Leona Shumway Burson. After graduating from Shade High School in 1941, she moved to Dayton, where she was employed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for several years. She later moved to Miami, Fla. and was employed by various U.S. Government Agencies as well as in private industry before retiring in 1990. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sisters, Joan Burson and Harriett Meeks both of Athens; a brother in law, Jack Carsey of Pomeroy; a former sister in law, Jeanne Kelley of The Plains; an aunt, Mildred Shumway of Granville; several nieces and nephews. Beside her parents she is preceded in death by a sister, Neacil E. Burson Carsey of Pomeroy; two brothers, Robert Burson of Pratts Fork and George D. Burson who was in the U.S. Air Force and killed in action during World War II; nieces Deborah Meeks and Pamela Burson. Private funeral service will be held Tuesday at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. Diana Carsey with interment in Athens Memory Gardens. No visitation will be observed at the funeral home.

Jean Dockery Thomas

The Plains - Jean Dockery Thomas, age 78, of The Plains, formerly of Cincinnati, passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 7, 2005 at the home of her daughter. Born July 14, 1927 in Chiefland, Fla. she was the daughter of the late Alfonse & Essie Burnett Dockery. She retired as executive director of housekeeping at Wesley Hall Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a member of Northside (Cincinnati) and the North Athens Congregations of Jehovah’s Witness. Mrs. Thomas is survived by three daughters; Patricia Ann Thomas of The Plains, Denese Thomas of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Debra J. Thomas of Cincinnati; a grandson, Christian Alexander Thomas and a great grandson, Elijah Alexander Byers; a sister, Alma Richardson of Cincinnati; a brother, Herbert Dockery of Chiefland, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and adopted “children”. Beside her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Thomas, Jr.; a sister Melvina Brown and a brother, Alfonso Dockery. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, 1:00PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’ s Witness, North Athens Congregation, 9110 Johnson Rd., Athens, Ohio 45701. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Ray J. “Jack” Gilkey

Athens - Ray J. “Jack:” Gilkey, age 77, of Windfall Ridge, Athens went to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, Aug. 6, 2005 at his home. Born June 4, 1928 on Gilkey Ridge, Meigs County, he was the son of the late Emmett and Alta L. Wilson Gilkey. Ray was the founder, developer, and trainer of Good Acres, where he lived and died. He was a member of the Albany Baptist Church. Ray was taught the horse trade in Pennsylvania and became a skilled horseman showing Tennessee Walking Horses and winning many awards throughout the United States. His greatest accomplishment was winning the Reserve Grand Champion of the World on the horse “Go Boy Rock & Roll”. In addition he worked at The College Inn, Jake’s Restaurant, Roger Dean Chevrolet and during his younger years in the U.S. Army (1952-56) as a Military Policeman. He is survived by one brother, Leonard (Edith) Gilkey and a sister Blanche Dille both of Albany. Beside his parents he is preceded in death by five brothers- Wayne, Roscoe, Herbert, Wallace and Ralph Gilkey; four sisters- Alpha Jeffers, Mable Hogue, Kathleen Ellis and Bessie “Babe” Fell. Graveside service will be conducted at Monday 1:00PM at Athens Memory Gardens by Pastor Bert Christian. Family and Close Friends may call at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home Sunday 2-4PM. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by KT Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477 Honor Guards. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Humane Society or The Albany Baptist Church.
