Earl W. Barnhart

Earl W. Barnhart, 88, of Athens, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was born July 14, 1917 in Doanville, the son of the late William and Anna Bell Johnson Barnhart. He was married to Garnet McDonald Barnhart since 1964, she survives. Earl was a self employed barber and he attended The True Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is survived by sons Earl (Sandy) Wood of Athens, Russell “Bugsy” K. Wood of Athens, Bill (Alice) Barnhart of Glouster, Jess (Betty) Barnhart of Trimble, James (Nellie) Barnhart of Athens, Steve (Stephanie) Barnhart of Belpre, Russell Earl (Sheila) Barnhart of Glouster, Randy (Becky) Wood of Athens, Frank (Debbie) Wood of Athens, Gary McDonald of Glouster, daughters Betty (Ike) Hunter of Athens, Rose (Larry) Ryan of Amesville, Anna (Bob) Proffitt of Little Hocking, Debra (Mike) Koon of Athens, Dorothy (Robin) Mount of Athens, Linda Mount of Buchtel, Geraldine Teal of Chauncey, Toby (Larry) Wycoff of Athens, 56 grandchildren, 88 Great Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother, one daughter, two grandsons, one great grandson, and a son in law. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1st, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville, with Pastor Leonard Swoyer officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, New Addition. Friends may call Saturday from 11 A.M. until the time of the service.

Martha A. Stoltzfus

Martha A. Stoltzfus, age 56, of Guysville died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2005 at her home. Born Jan. 26, 1949 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Harlan & Anna Sweigart Nolt and her step mother Bernice Nolt of Manheim, PA A graduate of Hempfield High School (PA), she was a resident of Guysville for 22 years. She was a homemaker, home schooled her children and was a bookkeeper for the family business. Mrs. Stoltzfus attended Christ Community Wesleyan Church. In addition to her step mother, she is survived by her husband, Ben Stoltzfus; four daughters- Joanna Stoltzfus, Elisabeth Stoltzfus, Leah Stoltzfus, & Rebekah Stoltzfus all of Guysville; five sons- Michael (Amanda) Stoltzfus of Sapphire, NC, Matthew (Robin) Stoltzfus of Brevard, NC, and Joseph Stoltzfus, David Stoltzfus, & Stephen Stoltzfus all of Guysville; three grandchildren- Chandler, Collin & Mason Stoltzfus and one expected grandchild; two sisters- Mary Steffy of East Petersburg, PA and Rachel (Jeff) Lingle of Elizabethtown, PA; a sister in law, Joyce Nolt of Lancaster, PA. “We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but rejoice that she is with the Lord she loved.” Besides her parents she is preceded in death by an infant child and a brother, John Nolt. Funeral service will be conducted Friday 1:00PM at Christ Community Wesleyan Church by Rev. Denver Dodrill with burial in Bates cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 6-9PM at the Christ Community Wesleyan Church. Herman Lee Cline

Herman Lee Cline, 67, of Bremen, Ohio, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2005 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan, Ohio. He was born August 8, 1938 in Parkersburg, West Virginia the son of the late Hunter Moss and Ethel Helen Schaeffer Cline. He was married to Rosa Leona Farley McConnell Cline, who survives. He was employed by Koch Industries for 30 years, owned and operated Starfire Mini Mart in Bremen for 17 years and attended the Freedom Memorial Church in Christian Union in Logan, Ohio. In addition to his wife, he is survived by, three daughters, Daphne (Charles) Loudermilk of Mt. Vernon, OH, Betsy Lou (Ronald) Teameer of Circleville, OH and Debra Denise (James) Dunn of Gahanna, OH; two stepsons, Jeffrey Ray (Shane) Cline of Lost Creek, WV and Ricky Alan (Judy) McConnell of Walker, WV; 5 grandchildren, Lacey, Adam, Andrew, Timothy and Erin; four step grandchildren, Rebecca Dawn, Cody, Austin and Stacie; three brothers, Harvey Levi (Caroline) Cline of Rockport, WV, David Ray (Betty) Cline of St. Petersburg, FL and Danny Moss (Larie) Cline of Parkersburg, WV; a sister, Martha Jane (Michael) Copeland of Parkersburg, WV; two half sisters, Florence Fay (Okey) Butcher of Ravenswood, WV and Nellie Rose (Clarence) Huffman of Cheshire, OH and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, two half brothers and three half sisters. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Big Taggert cemetery, Mineral Wells, WV. Gary L. Hook

Gary L. Hook, 61, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, September 23, 2005, at Doctors Hospital Nelsonville. He was born March 8, 1944 in Logan, Ohio, son of the late Harley and Adrienne Weaver Hook. Gary was married to Bonnie Roberts Hook of Nelsonville, for twenty years. He retired from Hocking Correctional Facility and was a member of the Nelsonville Elks #543 and VFW Post 3467. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was an avid outdoorsman. In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by three sons, Joel (Christy) Hook of Glouster, Richard (Sonya) Bruce of Nelsonville and Shane (Sara) Bruce of Nelsonville; three daughter Joan (Tony) Moler of Nelsonville, Annette Morrison of Nelsonville and Angela Hook; fifteen grandchildren; one brother, Keith (Ursula) Hook of Germany and one sister Linda Sue (Bob) Newman of Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Joan (Fellem) Langel

Joan (Fellem) Langel, 81, of Nelsonville, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2005 at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center in Nelsonville. She was born April 15, 1924 in Nelsonville, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Aikem) Fellem. She was married to Ralph O. Langel, who survives. Joan was a graduate of the Nelsonville High School Class of 1942, a 50 year member of the Logan Eastern Star, and worked for the Clerk of Courts office in Athens for many years. She is survived by two sons, John (Mary Lou) Brimner of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Ron (Cynthia) Brimner of Valrico, Florida, five grandchildren, Hudson, Megan, Jason, John and Andrea, 12 great grandchildren, and many loving, wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by three brothers, and three sisters. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at West Union cemetery, Athens. Ethel S. Hall

ATHENS – Ethel S. Hall, 97, of Athens died Monday morning, September 26, 2005 at Russel’s Nursing Home. She was born December 23, 1907 in Haydenville, and was the daughter of the late Flavious and Margaret Meade Saunders. After graduating from Mount Carmel Nursing School, she was a home health care nurse for most of her life. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jan Allen of Glouster. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Martin K. Hall; and 13 brothers and sisters. Services will be Wednesday at 1 PM at with Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery. Garnet A. Bentz

Garnet A. Bentz, 101, of Glouster, passed away Monday, January 30, 2006, at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Athens. She was born April 9, 1904, in Huntington, West Virginia, daughter of the late Sigmond and Elizabeth Jane Adkins. She was the widow of the late Warren Bentz. Garnet retired from the Athens Mental Health Center, where she worked as a nurse, and was also a member of Mound Hill Christian Church, Amesville. She is survived by five grandchildren, Julie, Russ, Joe, David, and Danny; seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by one daughter, Redith Staley and one sister, Pearl Burns. Private graveside services will be held Saturday at Maplewood cemetery, Glouster, with Tim Seevers officiating. Arrangements by Cardaras Funeral Home, 30 Main St., Glouster. Irene LaDonna Blimes, 75, of Tempe Arizona, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, February 1st, 2006 at her daughters residence in Arizona. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville.

Dale Edward Schumacher

Dale Edward Schumacher, 77, of North Coolville Ridge, Athens, succumbed to cancer on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the Pine Hills Continuing Care Center in Doctor’s Hospital, Nelsonville. Dale was born May 1, 1928 at home in Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was the son of Philip and Mary Elizabeth Neiger Schumacher. He was graduated from Dover High School and served two years in the Navy on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph, before college. He received his BA degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 1949 he married the former Beverly Cochran and to them one daughter, Debbie, was born. In 1952 he entered a training program at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron and was transferred to the Goodyear Atomic Plant in Piketon, Ohio in 1953. In 1961, the family moved to Athens where he became the Ohio University Director of Student Financial Aids. Coach Bob Wren recruited Dale into the Athletic Department where he stayed until his retirement in 1989. At that time he was the Associate Athletic Director. Since retirement Dale enjoyed fishing in farm ponds and at the Hocking Valley Sportsman, where he was a member. He was also a member of American Legion K. T. Crossen Post 21 and The Plains United Methodist Church. He was a shopper known for finding bargains for family and friends and was always among the first to know when the corn was in at Farmers’ Market. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert and Howard, half-sister Mildred English Kline, half-brother William English, and a nephew Kevin Schumacher. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and son-in-law Don Lewis. Friends may call at the Jagers and Sons Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial at Clarks Chapel cemetery with military rites by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477 Honor Guards. In lieu of flowers you may wish to make donations to the American Cancer Society, 607 Putnam Street, Marietta 45750

George E. Webster, Jr.

Born Oct. 4, 1930 in Amesville, he was the son of the late George E. and Virgene Carpenter Webster. He retired from Lucent in Columbus. He was a member of University Masonic Lodge in Dublin and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post 9473. He si survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Louise; two daughters, Gail Webster of Lancaster, Brenda (Mike) Hurr of Laurelville; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildreen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Lou Webster. Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 pm at, Athens. Burial will be in Mound Hill cemetery where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 21 and the Athens VFW Post 3477. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11:00 am until time of the service. FRANCES RAYMOND

Athens - The end of an era, Mt. Zion Baptist Church's oldest member, Frances Bryant Raymond, kept her appointment with God at 7:30AM, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Mrs. Raymond had been a resident of Kimes Nursing & Rehab Center, Athens, since the Fall of 2003. Her loving memories will live on in the hearts of her dear friend and caretaker, Dr. Francine C. Childs and son Jimmy & family; friends- Ms. Angela Davis, Anita Jordan, Dr. Patricia Gunn, Dr.& Mrs. Gerald Hurdle, Dr. Jenny Zamor; neighbor, Eloise Clark, and niece, Helen Moye of Detroit, Michigan; also her friends and family from the 7th Day Adventist Church and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, both of Athens. Frances Raymond was born July 17, 1911 in Rutland, Ohio. She moved to Athens to live with her Aunt Susie when she was three months old. Her Aunt Susan Carter raised her. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she held several positions for many years. She was an Entrepreneur- owning her own Beauty Salon, candy store, and rental property. Mrs. Raymond joyfully talked about baking fudge candy & chocolate chip cookies for the kids at Athens High School. She was known by the kids in the community as the "Candy Lady". She prized herself in making people look beautiful. She didn't just consider herself as a hair dresser, but as a beautician. Madam C.J. Walker was her role model. She also prided herself as one who walked all over town. Services will be held at Wednesday 12:30PM at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Francine C. Childs and Pastor Leon Forte of Grace Christian Center officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday 11:30AM, one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home.

Frank C. Lucas

Frank C. Lucas, age 81 of Stewart, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2006 at Laurels of Northwood, Worthington. Born Sept. 10, 1924 in Canaan Township, Athens County, he was the son of the late Perry Allen & Lillie Belle Darnell Lucas. Mr. Lucas retired from the United States Coast Guard with 26 years of service. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. An active Bobcat Fan he was also a member of Ohio University's Green and White Club and traveled with Jan's Fans. He was a veteran of World War II with his service in the Coast Guard. He is survived by a daughter- Teresa Marie (Ron) Terrill of Kingman, AZ; three sons- Thomas L. (Lauren) Lucas of Boca Raton, Fla., Steven C. (Erica) Lucas of Lakeworth, Fla., and Frank M. Lucas of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; two sisters- Mary & Martha and three brothers- Joe, Leonard, and Ernest. Besides his parents his is preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Marie Norris Lucas, Jan. 9, 2005. A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday 10:00AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mill & Stewart Sts., Athens by Father Martin Holler. A reception and luncheon will be held after the service at the Church Parish Hall for family and friends. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 607 Putnam Street, Marietta 45750. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home.

Lillian May Drake

Lillian May Drake, 71, of The Plains, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. She was born June 2nd, 1934 in Toledo, the daughter of the late Henry and Alice (Boprey) Lewis. She was married to Frank Stamm, who passed away previously. In accordance with Lillian's wishes, cremation will take place. There will be no services at this time. Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville, is handling the arrangements. Shirley Ann Yates

Shirley Ann Yates, age 69 of Canal Winchester, formerly of Athens died Sunday, Jan 15, 2006 at Winchester Place. Born Oct. 1, 1936 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Jess Weekley and Flossie M. Weatherby Weekley Rogaski. A 1954 graduate of Athens High School and a 1955 graduate of the Columbus Business University, she was an Office Manager in Henderson, Kentucky. She was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel, resident of Henderson, KY from 1974-94 and former resident of Lancaster. Mrs. Yates is survived by two half brothers- Lester Weekley and Phillip Weekley both of Orlando, Fla.; three aunts- Geneva Gabriel of Athens, Edith Bruce of Athens, Jean Dulaney of McConnelsville; an uncle, Victor (Gloria) Weekley of Huntsville, Ala. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins including a special double cousin, Sharon Weekley of Lancaster and her family, Michelle (Scott) Thompson and children- Trevor, Courtney, Evan and Alexandria Thompson. At her request, cremation will take place and no services will be observed. Her ashes will be buried in Henderson, KY. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 163549, Columbus 43216-3549. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
