Wilmena Mills Mender

Wilmena Mills Mender, 100, of Zanesville, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2006 at Genesis Extended Care and Rehab Center in Zanesville. She was born August 17, 1905 in Sugar Grove, the daughter of the late Oliver and Hazel (Snider) Mills. She was married to the late Hubert H. Mender of Nelsonville, who passed away previously. Wilmena was a graduate of Sugar Grove High School, a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Nelsonville where she was a Circle Leader, Board Member and church organist. She also was a member of Eudora Chapter #72 and a member of the Eastern Star where she was Past Worthy Matron and Secretary, a member of the Hocking Valley White Shrine #51 where she was Past Worthy High Priestess and Past District Deputy. She also was a past member of the Hyperion Club and Past President of the Nelsonville Garden Club. Wilmena also, was an organist at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Patty (Frank) Hartley of Zanesville, two granddaughters, Kathy (Frank) Sidwell of Zanesville, and Holly (Mark) Klopfenstein of Archbold, OH, Nine grandsons, Frank David (Gwen) Hartley of Hopkinsville KY, Steve (Jennifer) Mender of Amesville, Scott (Christy) Mender of Haydenville, Shane (Barbara) Mender of Frazeysburg, Shelly (Jeri) Mender of Madeira, Sam Mender of Columbus, Sayre (Laura) Mender of Marietta GA, Sven (Kathy) Mender of Lancaster, Stace (Ginger) Mender of Glouster, and many loving great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Wilmena was preceded in death by one son, Roland Mills Mender, one daughter in law, Pamela White Mender, and one sister, Melvena Mills. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 23, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville, with Pastor Stacy Evans officiating. Zinnia Savannah Hartley

ATHENS - Zinnia Savannah Hartley, 67 of Athens, died Saturday, January 21, 2006. She was born January 18, 1939 in Franklin County, VA, was raised in Roanoke, VA, and was the daughter of the late Silas and Mae Smith Hall. She is survived by nine children, Ron (Georgia) Davis of Glouster, Linda Capehart of Athens, Floyd Hartley of Gahanna, Dennis (Darcie) Hartley of Albany, Dianne Harrel of Albany, Debbie (Jim) Jeffers of Athens, Cindy (Jeff) Miller of Athens, Mark Hartley of Athens, and Eddie Hartley of Athens; one step-daughter, Ettiebelle Shockley of Roanoke, VA.; 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild; five brothers; and three sisters. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Foster Hartley; infant son, Michael Davis; and three sisters. Margaret Gwinn Lacey,

ATHENS - Margaret Gwinn Lacey, 83, formerly of Athens, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2006 in Melbourne, Florida where she lived for 20 years. She was born June 27, 1922 in Barbersville, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late C.F. and Hattie Duncan Gwinn. She worked at Athens State Hospital and at the Columbus State School. She was preceded in death by her husband George Lacey; six brothers and nine sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Huffman of Melbourne Florida; five grandchildren, Teresa (Brian) Hawkins of Melbourne, FL, Steven Grubbs Of Melbourne, FL, Diana (Art) Cofelice of Atlanta, GA, Rhonda (Dennis) Huntington of Melbourne, FL, and Ricky Grubbs of Atlanta, GA; four great grandchildren, Taylor and Kaycee Hungtington and Christopher and Zachary Cofelice; and one sister, Janice (Dale) Sapp of Athens. Services will be on Thursday at 11 AM, at with Pastor David Barringer officiating. Burial will follow at Bates cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. Naomi Miller O'Brien

Naomi Miller O'Brien, age 87 of Shade died Jan. 19, 2006 at her home. Born June 10, 1918 in Phelps, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late James A. Garfield Miller & Ida Sanders Miller. She was a former resident of Phelps, KY, Delbarton & Sharon, WV, and Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. O'Brien was a retired nurse working at CAMC in Charleston, WV and Mercy Hospital in Columbus. Mrs. O'Brien is survived by two sons- Bill (Henrietta) O'Brien of Shade and Ronald (Linda) O'Brien of Sharon, WV; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Claude Ray O'Brien and three brothers- Ralph, Earl and Willie Miller. Funeral service will be conducted Monday 1:00PM at the Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, West Virginia with burial in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV. Friends may call at the Pryor Funeral Home Sunday 6-8PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Appalachian Community Hospice, 30 Herrold Avenue, Athens 45701. Local arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Jeremy Paul Hayes

Jeremy Paul Hayes, age 20, of Athens died unexpectantly Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born July 30, 1985 in Athens, he is the son of George & Lora Sickels Hayes of Athens. He was a 2003 graduate of Alexander High School. Besides his parents Jeremy is survived by his sisters, Sara Paige Hayes & Karly Peyton Hayes, both of Athens; maternal grandmother, Hester Sickels of Athens and paternal grandmother, Anna Slayton of Vinton; also surviving are several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Paul Sickels and paternal grandfather, Paul Hayes. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday 1:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Pastor Elmer Geiser with burial in Bates cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9PM at the funeral home.

Bernice E. McLain

ATHENS – Bernice E. McLain, 88, of Athens, died Tuesday afternoon, January 24, 2006 at her home. She was born December 14, 1917 in Barberton and was the daughter of the late Lloyd Clayton and Wilma Bergdorf Beichler. She is survived by three children, Kenneth McLain of New Marshfield, George (Claudia) McLain of Arcanum, and Patty (Bill) Buckley of New Marshfield; a daughter-in-law, Geraldine McLain of New Marshfield; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; and a special friend, Yvonne Woods of New Marshfield. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil B. McLain; her second husband, Walter Graham; one son, Virgil C. McLain; and one grandson, Wayne McLain. Clarence J. Ackley

Clarence J. Ackley, 83, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center, Nelsonville. He was born February 21, 1922 in Athens County, the son of the late Vernon and Sadie Morris Ackley. He was married to Meta Marie Dixon Perry Ackley of Nelsonville, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Dorothy Strawser of Columbus; four brothers, Vernon Ackley and Robert Ackley both of Portsmouth, Ernest (Gwinn) Ackley of Canal Winchester and Pearl (Frances) Ackley of Columbus; nephews, David Douglas of Grove City, Raymond Strawser of Lexington, KY, Kenneth Sickles of Athens, Michael Ackley of Missoula, MT and Frank Ackley of Keizer, OR; a niece, Mary Oxley of Athens, two sons, Tom (Deanie) Perry of Athens, John (Leslie) Perry of Nelsonville; three daughters, Ruth (Larry) Pugh of Guysville, Cinda (David) Reed of Buchtel and Judy (Ron) Jack of Nelsonville; thirteen grandchildren, Tommy, Michelle, Johnny, Carl, Melanie, Chris, Jamie, Michael, Wayne, Yvonne, Brian, Christy and David; 21 great grandchildren, Connor, Taylor, Tanner, Justin, Cierra, Mark, Conner, Emylee, Tyson, Bradon, Morrison, Matthew, Jaden, Emily, Courtney, Brandon, Megan, Johnny, Tasha, Kyheem and Bradley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Ackley and three sisters, Esta Bryson, Marie Ackley and Irene Sickles. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Rev. John Johnson officiating. NEW MARSHFIELD – Greg W. Perry, 44, of New Marshfield died Friday, January 20, 2006 in Florida. He was born February 13, 1961 in Nelsonville and was the son of Gene and Shirley Kimes Perry of New Marshfield. Besides his parents, he is survived by three sons, Greg Perry Jr. of New Marshfield, Adam Perry of New Marshfield, and Ethan Perry of New Marshfield; four brothers, Gene Jr. (Kim) Perry of Athens, Tim Perry of New Marshfield, John (Sheila) Perry of Meigs Co., and Scott (Cathy) Perry of New Marshfield; and several nieces and nephews. Virginia Fulton

ATHENS - Virginia Fulton, 91, of Athens died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. She was born July 15, 1914 in Athens County and was the daughter of the late David and Verna Marquis. She is survived by two sons, David L. (Jane) Fulton of Akron and Richard M. Fulton of Dayton; a daughter, Sally Jo (Sonny) Burch of Athens; seven grandchildren, Maryjane Burch, Melissa (Andy) Trout, Sarah (John) Bann, Laura (Mark) Whitt, Monica (Brian) Hartz, Richard (Karen) Fulton and Rachel Fulton; and six great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Fulton; a brother, John Marquis; and a sister, Jane Skinner. Services will be Sunday at 2 PM at with Rev. H. Gertrude Eleanor White

Gertrude Eleanor White, 92, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, January 27, 2006. She was born May 16, 1913 in Nelsonville, the daughter of the late Amos and Nora Ellen Bartoe Steenrod. She was the widow of the late Francis D. White. She was a member of the Nelsonville First United Methodist Church where she also attended the Lunch Bunch. She was formerly a member of the Mother‚s Circle in Athens, Nelsonville Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Nelsonville VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Blue and Gold Ladies Association. She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Maffin and special friend Bob Young of Nelsonville; three sons, Hal (Mary June) White of Shelby, Douglas (Twinkle) White of Rome, Georgia and David (Jane) White of Delaware; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and a sister, Rachel Woodard of Nelsonville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons Larry and Delbert White; a granddaughter, Teresa Lynn White; a great grandson; five brothers, Virgil, Orval, Floyd, Randall 'Grubby' and John Steenrod; five sisters, Ouida Steenrod, Hazel Keating, Lucille Williams, Georgia Evans and Lula McKinney. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville with Rev. Stacy Evans officiating. Doris Lorrene Sams

Doris Lorrene Sams, of Athens, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Jan. 29, 2006 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, with her four loving children by her side. Born Oct. 22, 1936 in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. & Frances Kelly Walls. She is survived by her children, Lori, Becky, Lane and Bill; five grandchildren- John, Waylon, Jill, Jenna and Cole; five great grandchildren- Michael, Cody, Sami, Shawn and M.J.; a brother, Ted Walls and a special friend of the family, Harold Bean. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Harold R. Sams and a sister, Norma Jean Corrigan of Ogden, Utah. Doris was a care giver to many wonderful friends throughout her life. She had a great love for her family and friends as well as her pets. She enjoyed the outdoors and the sunshine. She was also an avid bowler and golfer. Phillippians 1 verse 3- “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you” A celebration of Doris’ life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at 2:00PM at the Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church. Friends are invited to arrive two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Clarks Chapel cemetery. Fellowship will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. Flowers will be welcome or donations may be made in her memory to the Athens County Humane Society, 8500 Hoon Drive, Athens 45701. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home.
