MARK L. UNVERFERTH

KALIDA - Mark L. “Tarder” Unverferth, 51, of Kalida died Wednesday August 20, 2008 at Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center in Glandorf.

Mr. Unverferth was born June 15, 1957 in Lima to the late Richard A. and Gladys M. (Pugh) Unverferth. He is survived by 7 brothers: Steve (Linda) Unverferth, Joe (Kay) Unverferth, Jim (Joni) Unverferth, Larry (Kathy) Unverferth, Dave (Becky) Unverferth and Chad (Rachelle) Unverferth all of Kalida and Jeff (Debbie) Unverferth of Sylvania and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was the payroll manager for Unverferth Manufacturing in Kalida. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kalida and its Holy Name Society. He was also on the liturgy committee and a former Parish Councilman for the church, a charter member of Kalida Chamber of Commerce and a member of Ottawa Eagles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday August 25, 2008 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Kalida with Fr. Ken Alt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Saturday and 2 to 8 pm Sunday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa where there will be scripture service 7:45 pm Sunday. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

AGAPITO “PETE” ALVARADO JR.

CONTINENTAL - Agapito “Pete” Alvarado Jr., 60, of Continental died 12:10 pm Saturday, August 23, 2008 on Rd. H in Putnam County.

Mr. Alvarado was born December 25, 1947 in Karne City, Texas, to Agapito and Juanita (Davilla) Alvarado, both survive in Kalida. On March 26, 1966, he married Minnie Hernandez who survives in Continental.

Also surviving are his children, David (Tami) Alvarado of Marion, Paul (Julie) Alvarado of Houston, Texas, James Alvarado, Johnny Alvarado and Rob (Christi) Alvarado all of Continental; a brother, Rick Alvarado of Broken Arrow, OK; 3 sisters, Mary Scarberry and Maggie Gray both of Ottawa and Adell (Junior) Workman of Continenatl; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Dannette Alvarado; 3 brothers, Santiago, Jose and Gilbert Alvarado and 4 sisters, Eva Esquivel, Julie Bernal, Elizabeth Good and Alicia Alvarado.

Mr. Alvarado was retired from Phillips in Ottawa. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his dog, Snuggles. He also loved working outdoors.

Funeral services will be held 11 am Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Continental with Rev. Rick Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Monroe cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental.

Memorials may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.

WANDA I. HOFFMAN

CONTINENTAL - Wanda I. Hoffman, 89, of Continental, died 2:15 pm Thursday, September 4, 2008 at The Meadows of Kalida.

Wanda was born April 11, 1919 in Alliance, Ohio, to the late Leonard and Hazel (Brown) Green. On May 21, 1937, she married Russell Hoffman of 71 years who survives in Continental.

Also surviving are her children, William (Kay) Hoffman and Timothy (Mary Jo) Hoffman both of Continental and Karen (Ron) Cooper of Oakwood; a brother, Robert Green of Columbus Grove; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Roxann Hoffman and two brothers, Donald Gene Green and Kenneth Green, preceded Wanda in death.

Wanda was a member of The Defiance Christian Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star #129 Continental.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Sunday, September 7, 2008 at The Defiance Christian Church with Rev. Brian Maxey officiating. Burial will be in Monroe cemetery, Continental at a later date. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 pm Sunday at the church. HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental, is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Continental Library.

ELMA G. LEE

CONTINENTAL- Elma G. Lee, 87, of Continental died 8:35 am Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Hospice of Defiance.

Mrs. Lee was born April 12, 1921 in Oakwood to the late Lawrence and Jennie (Kretzinger) McCullough. On March 13, 1941 she married Joseph Lee who died March 12, 1999.

She is survived by her children: Roger Lee of Continental, Stephen (Mary) Lee and Sharon (Fred) Fitzenrider both of Defiance and Judy (Robert) Rodenbach of Scottsdale, AZ.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; and a brother: Lawrence B. (Lodema) McCullough of Continental. 2 sisters preceded her in death: Catherine Lee and Norma McCullough.

Mrs. Lee was retired from Campbell Soups Company in Napoleon. She was a lifetime member of Prairie Chapel Bible Church in Oakwood.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Prairie Chapel Bible Church in Oakwood with Pastor Earl Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Chapel cemetery, Oakwood. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Friday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME in Continental and 10:00 am until time of services Saturday at the church. Memorials can be made to Defiance County Hospice.

CAROL A. OKULEY

OTTAWA – Carol A. Okuley, 69, of Ottawa, died 4:40 pm, August 31, 2008 at the Meadows of Ottawa-Glandorf. She was born February 2, 1939 in Ottawa to the late Paul and Kathryn (Blymeyer) Croy. On April 30, 1960 she married Gerald Okuley and he survives.

Also surviving is her son, Gerald J. Okuley of Ottawa; 2 grandchildren; 2 brothers, James Croy of Waterville and Donald Croy of Ottawa; and 2 sisters, Dorothy Michel of Ottawa and Pat Ketner of Ottawa.

She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul Croy and William Croy.

There will be no visitation or funeral.

BIDLACK, CLEO

OAKWOOD – Cleo Bidlack, 103, of Oakwood died 9:25 pm Friday, October 31, 2008 at the Laurels of Defiance.

Mrs. Bidlack was born September 2, 1905 in Henry County to the late Guy Eugene and Iva (Frederick) Durham. On March 6, 1926 she married Guy Bidlack who died in October of 1977.

She is survived by her children: Marjorie Roughton of Paulding, Dr. Donald Bidlack of Coarsegold, CA, and Dr. Duane Bidlack of Chambersburg, PA; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Preceding her in death were 2 brothers: LaVerne and Burdette Durham and a great-grandchild.

Mrs. Bidlack was a homemaker. She was a member of Twin Oaks United Methodist Church in Oakwood; she had been a Sunday school teacher; she was a current member of the Farm Bureau; and a former member of Oakleaf Grange, Pamona Grange, Everwilling Homemakers Club and Rebecca Lodge. Mrs. Bidlack graduated from Oakwood High School in 1924. She and her husband were selected as Mr. and Mrs. Oakwood in September of 1976.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Oakwood with Rev. Mike Brown officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Chapel cemetery in Oakwood. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services Thursday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Oakwood. Memorials can be made to Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, the Laurels of Defiance or a charity of the donor’s choice.

GONZALEZ, ESTEVAN M.

LEIPSIC – Estevan M. Gonzalez, 81, died 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2008 at his residence.

He was born September 2, 1927 in Santa Maria, TX to the late Maximiano and Lucinda (Frausto) Gonzalez. On July 4, 1948 he married Anna Rosa, who survives in Leipsic. Also surviving are his children: Marie Elma (George) Bishop of St. George, UT, Maria Elena (Reynoldo) Leal of Defiance, OH, Elia (Felipe Jr.) Alvalrado of Hamler, OH, Edna (Arthur) Lomeli of Leipsic, OH, Lisa (Dennis Jr.) Nagy of Maumee, OH, and Becky Dunbar of Findlay, OH; 24 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Domingo Gonzalez of Detroit, MI and Federico Gonzalez of TX; sister: Maria (Manuel) Garcia of WA; and a special friend: Carol Lomeli of Leipsic, OH

He had been a laborer for General Motors in Defiance. He is preceded in death by his son: Estevan Jr.; brother: Juan Gonzalez; and sister: Concepcion Cardoza.

He was a member of both St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Eagles Lodge in Leipsic.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic with Father George Wenzinger and Deacon Val Lopez co-officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME in Leipsic, where there will be a Parish Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Hospice or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

BOWERS, DOROTHY E.

PANDORA - Mrs. Bowers was born July 25, 1921 in Gilboa to the late Everett and Mary (Jenkins) Nash. On June 8, 1941 she married Gail Bowers who died April 26, 1987. She is survived by her children: Barry (Cheryl) Bowers, Mary (Douglas) Hahn, Terri (David) Grismore and Chery (David) Core all of Pandora; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Her brother: Charlie Nash preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bowers was a homemaker and was a member of Pandora United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Ottawa with Pastor Mark Hollinger officiating. Burial will be in Harman cemetery, Gilboa. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to services Wednesday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME in Ottawa. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association.

SCHARF, EDMUND E.

CLOVERDALE – Edmund E. Scharf, 83, of Cloverdale died 6:30 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2008 at The Meadows of Kalida.

He was born November 7, 1924 in Cloverdale to the late Aloysisus and Margaret (Geyer) Scharf. On October 29, 1960, he married Florence Beair, who preceded him in death September 14, 1990.

Mr. Scharf was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, Cloverdale and it’s Holy Name Society.

Survivors include three sons, Joe (Dawn) Scharf of Delphos, John (Cora) Scharf of Cloverdale, and Jerry (Charlene) Scharf of Cloverdale; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, Cloverdale with Fr. Robert Kill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Twp.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

KRUSE, WILFRED

OTTAWA – Wilfred F. “Bill”Kruse, 91 of Ottawa died 12:50 pm Monday November 3, 2008 at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. He was born December 20, 1916 in Ottawa to the late Bernard and Elida (Klausing) Kruse. On June 4, 1946, he married Jane Walker. She died April 6, 2005. Surviving is a son: Ron (Peg) Kruse of Ottawa, 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother: Leonard (Ruth Ann) Kruse of Columbus Grove; 1 sister: Martha Schroeder: Swanton. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Mildred Goedde, Betty Stiles, Rita Erford.

Mr. Kruse was owner/operator of the former Kruse Maytag Appliance and Furniture in Ottawa and had worked as a salesman for Steffan and Bellman Ford formerly in Ottawa. He was also a farmr. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ottawa where he was an usher and was a member of Glandorf Rod andGun.

A Funeral Mass will be said 10:00 am Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Matt Jozefiak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Wednesday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa where there will be a scripture service at 2:30 pm.

Memorials may be made to Serve Beyond Cincinnati.

RALPH E. HASELMAN

LEIPSIC - Ralph E. Haselman, 77, of Leipsic died 7:15 pm Saturday, November 1, 2008 in Leipsic as the results of a car and train accident.

Mr. Haselman was born October 12, 1931 in Leipsic, to the late Joseph and Rose (Schroeder) Haselman. On October 9, 1954, he married Bernadine Giesige, who died May 13, 1997.

Surviving are his children: Deborah (Steven) Barney of Ottawa, Patricia (Bob) Newell of Leipsic, Mark (Diane) Haselman of Leipsic, Rose Resnik of Van Buren, Martin (Krisann) Haselman of Leipsic, Brenda (David) Johnson of Perrysburg, Linda (Dan) Mangas of Leipsic and Melanie (Greg) Leingang of Troy; 25 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mildred Kohls of Leipsic and Helen (Bob) Collins of Deshler and a brother: Richard (Edna) Haselman of Leipsic. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Jeanette Selhorst, Beatrice Kleman and Mary Ann Kaufman; 1 brother: Thomas Haselman.

Ralph was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic; Leipsic Eagles and Ottawa Knights of Columbus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. George Wenzinger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Monday and 2 to 8 pm Tuesday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Leipsic where the K of C and parish will have a rosary at 7:30 pm

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School or the charity of the donor’s choice

ELMO J. MILLER

OTTAWA – Elmo J. Miller, 81, of Ottawa died 5:15 a.m. October 31, 2008 at The Meadows of Kalida.

Mr. Miller was born June 16, 1927 in Metamora to the late Walter and Eleanor (Gillen) Miller. On June 29, 1949 he married Alice Kleman who died August 6, 2002.

He is survived by his son: Harvey (Sue) Miller of Ottawa; a daughter: JoAnn (Jim) Taylor of Gardnerville, NV; a daughter-in-law: Miriam Miller of Kalida; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother: Cyril (Jeanette) Miller of Raleigh, NC and 2 sisters: Opal Niese of Ottawa and Jane (Norman) Lammers of Miller City.

Preceding him in death were 2 sons: Thomas and Robert Miller; a grandchild; 1 brother: John Miller and 2 sisters: Mary Alice Miller and Monica Niese.

Mr. Miller was a self-employed Genetic Engineer and worked for American Breeder Service. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ottawa.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Alfons Minja officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa where there will be a scripture service at 2:30 p.m. Memorials can be made to the donor’s choice.
