Karen I. Whitney
(1939 - 2005)
EDON - Karen I. Whitney, age 66, of Edon, died early Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in her home after an extended illness.
Born January 12, 1939 near Montpelier, she was the daughter of John Robert and Edna Marie (Walz) Hinkle. She married Donald L. Whitney on May 10, 1959, in Edon and he survives.
A 1957 graduate of Edon High School, she had graduated from Beauty School in 1958. She was a sales representative for Avon cosmetics, and a member of St. PeterÕs Lutheran Church in Edon where she was active in the choir, the Friendship Circle, WELCA and also taught Sunday School. She was a former Emergency Medical Technician in Edon for six years and is a member of the Florence Township Firebelles, as well as a longtime election board volunteer and the former records director for Thrivent. She was also a member of the Bryan Moose Lodge No. 1064 and the Red Hat Society.
Surviving, in addition to her husband are by one daughter Mrs. Mike (Tina) Surfus of Edon; two sons, Terry (and wife, Joyce) Whitney and Timothy (Melissa) Whitney, both of Edon; eight grandchildren; one brother, Harold Joe (Marge) Hinkle of Edgerton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and one grandson Evan Wayne Surfus in 2002. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Edon, with Pastor Don Lechrone officiating. Burial will follow in Edon Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Cancer Assistance of Williams County, St. Peter's Lutheran Church or to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers-Hospice Care.
Heloise Miller
(1913 - 2005)
MONTPELIER - Heloise E. Miller, 91, of rural Montpelier, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 29, 1913, at Romulus, Mich., to Velma O. (Winzler) and Silas R. Hoag, she married Kenneth W. Miller on May 12, 1933, and he preceded her in death in November 1979.
A protestant and member of the Solid Rock Community Church of West Unity, she was a homemaker and had worked at the Williams County General Hospital dietary department in Montpelier.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Patricia) Chamberlain of Bryan; a son, Ronald (and wife, Linda) Miller of West Unity; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Louise) Hoag of Edon; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Waunetta) Seward of Montpelier.
Her parents; a sister, Rosemond Connolly; and one great-grandson; preceded her in death. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-8 p.m. in the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Solid Rock Community Church of West Unity, with The Rev. Robert V. Waggoner and Pastor Mike Beasley to officiate. Burial will be in Shiffler Cemetery in Bryan.
Memorials may be made to the Solid Rock Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Marjorie Ann Shadel
(1945 - 2005)
WEST UNITY - Marjorie Ann Shadel, 59, of West Unity, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at her home.
Born Feb. 21, 1945, at Morenci, Mich., to Helen V. (Ford) and Maynard Grandstaff, she married Hillis Shadel on March 24, 1965, at Fayette, and he survives.
The Salutatorian of Fayette High School Class of 1963, she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Fayette and currently attended the Solid Rock Community Church in West Unity. She had been a member of the church choir.
Previously, she had been employed at Fayette Tubular, 5 & 10 Store in West Unity, ShafferÕs Restaurant and K Mart in Bryan.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Chandra Shadel of Swanton; a son, Robert Shadel of West Unity; a grandson, Timmy Geleide of Norfolk, Va.; and an aunt, Mary Ellen Smith of Fayette.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in the Eagle Funeral Home, Fayette. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Pleasant View Union Cemetery in Fayette and a memorial service on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Solid Rock Community Church in West Unity with Pastor Mike Beasley to officiate.
Memorials may be made to Hospice, The Caring Way, of Williams and Fulton Counties.
Clarence E. "Casey" Jones
(1926 - 2005)
BLUFFTON - Clarence E. "Casey" Jones, 78, of Bluffton, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.
Born March 10, 1926, at Richland Twp., to Esther (Slusser) and Clarence E. Jones, he married Joan Carr on Sept. 12, 1947, and she survives.
An Army veteran of World War II, he had been a purchasing agent for Garwood Industries in Findlay, Superior Coach in Lima and JJL Automotive in Wapakoneta.
He was a 1944 graduate of Mt. Cory High School and had attended Findlay College.
A member of Ebenezer Mennonite Church in Bluffton, he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, a deacon and Missions Board Chairman. He was on the Cory Rawson School Board for 12 years and the Hancock County School Board for five years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dennis (and wife, Pam) Jones of Bryan and Tim (Teresa) Jones of Findlay; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Patty) Boehm of Dunkirk and Mrs. Gary (Cathy) Bayliss of Lima; grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Boehm, Michelle Garman, Ryan Weldy, Christy Barry, Tina, Bob, Dennis, Joshua, Brittany and Hailey Jones; a brother, David Jones of Findlay; and four sisters, Mrs. William (Margaret) Herr and Mrs. Paul (Alice) Wingate, both of Bluffton, Martha Beach of Jenera and Mrs. Dwaine (Ruth) Amstutz of Grangeville, Idaho. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Homes, Bluffton.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Ebenezer Mennonite Church, Bluffton, with the Rev. Roger Ford to officiate. Burial will be in Ebenezer Mennonite Cemetery with military rites to be performed.
Memorials may be made to the Ebenezer Mennonite Church.
Roseltha B. Wilson
Roseltha B. Wilson, 95, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio-Bryan.
Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Vogel of Oaklawn, Ill.; grandchildren, Mrs. Mark (Andrea) Pearson and Alan Vogel; great-grandchildren, Katherine and Jillian Pearson; siblings, James (and wife, Eleanor) Ruetz of Montpelier, Glen "John" (Marcena) Ruetz of Montpelier, Lucille Koch Pitts of Bryan, June Ream of Defiance and Carl (Theda) Ruetz of Toledo; sisters-in-law, Joann Irene, Olive and Katherine Ruetz; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were siblings, Ronald, Harold, Wayne, Walter, Donald (Alice) and Dorothy Ruetz, and brothers-in-law, Jeff Pitts and Noah Ream.
The funeral was held Monday, Feb. 14, in the Reeb Funeral Home in Sylvania. Interment was in the Toledo Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Eula Herman
(1925 - 2005)
Eula Niebel Herman, 79, of Bryan, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, 2005, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Born Oct. 30, 1925, at Claiborne, she was the daughter of Affa (Elliott) and William Elliott. The manager at Amvets Post 54 in Bryan, she had owned Jack and Jills Pizza in both Archbold and Bryan.
She was a member of the Eagles, Moose, VFW and Amvets, all of Bryan.
Surviving are a son, Barry (and wife, Barbara) Niebel of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepson, Roger (Sandy) Herman of Bryan; a stepdaughter, Brenda Herman; and three stepgrandchildren, Lacey, Lindsey and Michael Herman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Byron "Barney" Niebel in 1972 and Oscar Herman in 1998.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 1-5 p.m. in the Burr Funeral Home & Crematory, Bryan. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with burial to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay.
Memorials may be made to either Bryan Amvets Post 54 Building Fund or Hospice, The Caring Way, of Williams and Fulton Counties.
