Dorothy Stake
December 02, 1916 - April 04, 2002
Dorothy (Sprang) Stake, 85, of Mansfield died Thursday April 4, 2002 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Mrs. Stake was born December 2, 1916 in Loudonville, residing in the Mansfield area for the past 50 years. She was a life long member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she kept active being an officer of the Christian Home Builders and the Autumn Club. Mrs. Stake was a volunteer of the Red Cross, and a member of R.S.V.P. Dorothy enjoyed knitting caps for the newborns at the hospital for many years. She loved crocheting and quilt making.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Carol Stake; Les and Mary Stake and Dave and Sherry Stake all of Mansfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and John Markel of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Jacob Sprang of Loudonville; and Donald and Bernard Sprang both of Perrysville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Carrie (Brenneman) Sprang; her husband, Raymond Stake; and three brothers, Glen, Howard and Raymond Sprang.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors on Sunday April 7, 2002 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Allen E. Rose. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the church’s memorial fund.

Karl Baum
December 26, 1908 - April 11, 2002
Karl Baum, 93, of Mansfield, died Thursday morning April 11, 2002, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Baum was born December 26, 1908, in Yugoslavia, residing in the Mansfield area for the past 51 years. He retired from Gorman-Rupp Co.
Surviving are one daughter, Katharina Baum; one brother, Jakob Baum of Germany and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Katharina Baum; and his wife, Katharina Baum, November 8, 1997.
There will be no calling hours or funeral services held at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. in Mansfield cemetery. Please omit flowers at request of the family.

Charles E. Backensto
September 22, 1920 - April 13, 2002
Charles E. “Chuck” Backensto, 81, of Pavonia died early Saturday morning, April 13, 2002 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Backensto was born September 22, 1920 in Richland County to Omar A. and Bertha (Harvey) Backensto. He graduated in 1940 from Madison High School and was in the service in China, Burma, and India in WWII. He was employed by Crestview Schools until his retirement in 1990. A member of Pavonia Methodist Church, he served as an assistant of Pavonia Methodist Church, he served as an assistant scoutmaster and Union Little League coach. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and softball.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Iva (Alexander) Backensto; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jr. “Chip” and Colleen Backensto of Mansfield; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and John Miller of Ontario; seven grandchildren, Teri, Brian, Michelle, Karen, Alan, Shawnell, and Rachelle; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Russell, Robert and Richard Backensto all of Mansfield; two sisters, Ethel McKim and Betty Backensto, both of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Howard, Francis and Omar L Backensto, and sisters, Pauline Tucker and Mary Leather.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Tuesday, April 16 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. conducted by Dr. Michael Mack. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or the Boy Scouts of America.

Mildred L. Albers
February 16, 1916 - April 22, 2002
Mildred L. Wells Albers, 86, of Mansfield died early Monday morning, April 22, 2002 at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home. Mrs. Albers was born February 16, 1916 in Steubenville, Ohio to William and Jennie Wells. Mildred was formerly employed at Peabody Barnes where she worked in the payroll department as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Fout of Butler, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Shirley Albers of Mansfield; four grandchildren, Michael Fout, Jody Fout, Jenny and Kevin Carr and Stephanie Albers; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Brokaw, Chelsy Carr, Gabrielle Carr and Christina Fout; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Kate Wells of Massillon, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Jennie Wells, husband, Robert Albers in March 2002, son Robert Thomas Albers, brother, William Wells and two sisters, Wilma Gorse and Alberta Harris.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. and funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 1:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Cloyd E. Kress. Private family burial will follow at a later date in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.

Barbara Barr
June 29, 1944 - May 27, 2002
Barbara Barr, 57 of Mansfield died unexpectedly Monday evening, May 27, 2002 at her home. She was born June 29, 1944 to Fred Earl and Alice Jeannette (Ness) Barr in Mansfield. Barbara enjoyed bingo and bowling and was an area resident most of her life. She retired in January 2002 from Therm-O-Disc as a foreman and was currently working at The Waterford in food services.
She is survived by a brother, Fred E. Barr; four nieces, Robin Wiggin and Debbie Blankenship, both of Mansfield, Vicki Schroeder of Bentonville, Arkansas and Cindy Glenn of Walled Lake, Michigan; and a nephew, David Barr of Mansfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Alice Barr and one sister, Beverly Ann Barr Dunn.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Saturday, June 1 from 12-2 p.m. There will be no funeral services. Burial will be at Mansfield Memorial Park at a later date.

Richard "Dick" Eugene Clever
July 17, 1930 - June 03, 2002
Richard “Dick” Eugene Clever died Monday, June 3, 2002 at Ohio State University, James Cancer Hospital in Columbus after an extended illness. Mr. Clever was born July 17, 1930 in Ashland, Ohio to Clyde and Ruby (Hunter) Clever. He was employed in the maintenance department with Westinghouse until his retirement after 36 years of service. Dick was a member of the Mansfield Moose Lodge, American Legion, Amvets Post #43, VFW Post #3494, Bellville Masonic Lodge #376 F. & A.M., Baku Grotto, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and Mansfield Eagles Post #336. He attended Community Baptist Bible Church and was an independent, active person who enjoyed racing and woodworking.
Survivors include two sons, Craig and his wife, Rachel Clever of Bellville and Mark Clever and his fiancée Lynn Ricer of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Nathan Clever, Nichole and her husband, Scott Potter, Stephanie Clever, Shane Clever, and Heather Clever; four great-grandchildren; his best friend, Bill Erhart of Mansfield; cousin, Don Clark of Mt. Vernon; and great-aunt, Lenora Hunter of Centerburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ruby Clever and stepmother, Hazel Clever.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Friday, June 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Masonic services being observed at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Community Baptist Bible Church, Saturday at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Pastor Randall Collins. Military graveside services will follow in Little Washington cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to OSU, James Cancer Center or the donor’s choice.

Russell S. Beer
May 21, 1921 - June 11, 2002
Russell S. Beer, 81, of Mansfield died Tuesday afternoon, June 11, 2002 at Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus after a brief illness. Mr. Beer was born May 21, 1921 to Simon and Katherina (Miller) Beer and was an area resident all his life. Russell graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1940 where he played Varsity football and basketball. He graduated from the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City, Missouri and was an instructor in the B-25 Bomber plant in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a superintendent with Peabody Galion until his retirement and had previously worked for G.L. Rogers and was co-owner of A & B Trucking. Russell was a member of Venus Lodge #152, F. & A.M. for over 50 years, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus, Baku Grotto, Ruth Chapter #17, Order of the Eastern Star, and Peabody Men’s Club. He loved to be with his family and enjoyed gardening, traveling, and sports and was a man who was mechanically creative. He served with the Amphibious Engineers of the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific for 36 months.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Josephine Powell Beer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and William Shaw of Lexington and Sally and Joseph Parr of Bellville; grandchildren, John Russell Harris and his wife, Linda, Lisa Renée Kitzmiller, Jason Michael Parr, and Amy Marie Parr; one great-grandchild, Jade Nichole Harris; two sisters; two sisters-in-law; and his pal, Molly. His parents, two brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors one hour prior to funeral services that will be held, Thursday at 1:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Michael Stine. Masonic services will be observed during the calling hour. Military graveside services will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Star Home.

Christine E. Prince
December 26, 1932 - July 30, 2002
Christine E. Prince, 69, of Mansfield died late Tuesday evening, July 30, 2002 at her home. Mrs. Prince was born December 26, 1932 and was an area resident since 1953. She was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, reading, and loved to go camping. Christine was a member of the A.A.R.P. and N.R.A.
She is survived by three sons and their spouses, Donald R. Prince of Mansfield, Sanford and Barbara Prince of Galion, and Billy W. and Rosemarie Prince of Mansfield; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Tucker and Alma and Budd Schmidt of Mansfield; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Hampton of Tunnelton, West Virginia, Lucy and her husband, Ardith Warner of Van, West Virginia and Katherine Harper of Hedgesville, West Virginia; several nieces and nephews; longtime friend, Shirley Stollings; and Babe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Prince, son, James Jarrell, a great-grandson, and parents, George and Florence (Keffer) Davis.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Thursday, August 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Friday at 1:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Donald Holtzapple. Burial will follow in Shenandoah cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio.

Lula "Tootsie" Wilson
June 25, 1925 - July 31, 2002
Lula “Tootsie” Wilson, 77, of Mansfield died Wednesday morning, July 31, 2002 at MedCentral Mansfield after a brief illness. Mrs. Wilson was born June 25, 1925 in Enterprise, Kentucky. Lula and her husband, Homer, shared their life and work together operating their family business, Wilson’s Towing. She was an avid frog collector and animal lover. Her family was by her side when she passed.
She is survived by her husband, Homer Wilson; two sons, Mike Curtis and friend, Mickie Sturtzinger and Clifford Wilson Jr., all of Mansfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol & Tom Clements and JoAnn & Alan Eckstein, all of Mansfield; four grandchildren, Justin and Lindsay Curtis and James and Denise Eckstein; two sisters, Bessie Jacobs of Lexington, Kentucky and Mattie Robinson of Baltimore, Ohio; a brother, Paul Mullins of Florida; and close friend and caregiver Rosemary Webb. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hawk & Gracie (Lewis) Mullins; a daughter, Mary Lee; ten brothers and sisters; and her loving pet, Boomer.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Friday from 2-4 & 6-8. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Ron Miller. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Manning Chapel cemetery in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lois Katherine Sqrow
June 29, 1917 - July 31, 2002
Lois Katherine Hunter Sqrow, 85, of Mansfield died early Wednesday morning, July 31, 2002 at Woodlawn Health Care and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Sqrow was born June 29, 1917 in Mansfield and was an area resident and homemaker most of her life. She was formerly employed with Uhlich’s Pie Bakery and retired from Therm-O-Disc. Lois attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and was a member of Omega Tau Gamma Sorority, John’s Park Ladies Auxiliary and Bowling League, and the Mother of Twins Club. She decorated cakes from her home for many years and enjoyed bowling and bingo.
She is survived by three sons and their spouses, Larry D. and Ruth Sqrow, Roger E. and Patty Sqrow and Dean E. Sqrow, all of Mansfield; three daughters, Nancy K. Shook, Arlene M. Boudreau and her special friend, Tim Norris, all of Mansfield, and Darlene F. Sqrow and Gary Kimes of Ontario; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Lingafelter of Mansfield; a sister-in-law, Helen Weber Hunter of Mansfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Frieda Sqrow of California and Mike and Josephine Bittman of Ontario; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Sqrow; parents, William H. and M. Grace (Miller) Hunter; daughter, stillborn Diana Sqrow; son, Thomas L. Sqrow, Sr.; brothers, Lester W. Hunter and Cloyce Hunter; sisters, Pauline and Irene Wittmer; half-sister, Gilberta Hunter; great grandson Thomas L. Sqrow III; and two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Henry and Mary Nezrick and Charles and Caroline Kuppinger.
