Laverna F. Okuly
1912 - 2009

Laverna F. Okuly, age 97, of Findlay and formerly of Holgate, died Friday afternoon in her grandson’s Findlay home.

Her Legacy: She was born June 3, 1912 in Holgate the daughter of Fred and Frances (Diemer) Yetter.

In October 1932 she married Rudolph Okuly.

He preceded her in death in 1968.

Granny was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria and the Rosary Altar Society.

Her Family: Surviving is a son, Arnold (Linda) Okuly, New Bavaria; grandson Mark (Karyna) Okuly, Findlay; step grandson Brian Okuly, MN; 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson Alan “Bud” Okuly and a granddaughter, Linda Padalio.

Her Farewell Services: A mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 10:30 am in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria with Father Stephen Stanbery officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends will be received in Zachrich Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Holgate on Monday from 2-5 and 6-8 pm.

The rosary will be recited that evening at 7:00 pm.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Cancer Society or donor’s choice.

Charles C. Anderson

“Charlie”, “Chuck”, “Chas”, Anderson, age 77, of Napoleon, died Friday morning, September 25, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

His Legacy: He was the son of Mary Bernice February 3, 1932 in Pandora, Ohio.

At age 12 he lived with his Aunt Janet and Uncle Dale E. Snavely and their children.

Chas graduated from Holgate High School in 1950 and attended the Ohio State University.

He was stationed in Berlin with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He had a life long career in the construction field, building residential and commercial buildings and supervising construction with construction and architectural firms.

He was a licensed auctioneer and realtor.

On August 13, 1976 he married Nancy (Bonar) Wright.

Chas was a member of the Holgate United Methodist Church, a past church trustee and Sunday School Superintendent.

He was a member of the Rufus Putnam Masonic Lodge, Ohio Auctioneer Association, National Auctioneers Association, Ohio Horse Council, and Zenobia Shrine and Mounted Patrol.

His Family: He is survived by his wife, his sons and their families: Steven and Liam Anderson of Florida, Michael, Melissa, Christian and Mackenzie Anderson of Michigan, Matthew, Michelle, Jenna and Kevin Anderson of Virginia and Paul, Michael and Christopher Anderson of Ohio; a half-sister Betty (Owen D.) Newell of Ohio and many nieces and nephews.

His Farewell Services: A celebration of Chuck’s life will be on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Holgate United Methodist Church with Reverend Deb Berry and Reverend Tom Ketzler officiating.

Friends will be received in the church from 11 am until 2:00 pm.

A luncheon will follow in the church basement.

Nancy has asked that in lieu of flowers the memorials be made to Gideons International or the Holgate United Methodist Church.

Lawrence C. Gerken, Sr

Lawrence C. Gerken, Sr., age 94, of Napoleon, died Tuesday afternoon, October 27, at the Henry County Hospital.

His Legacy: He was born September 15, 1915 to August and Mayme (Elling) Gerken in Hamler.

On March 28, 1937 he married Alta Sonnenberg.

She died on June 6, 2005.

He was a former member of Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler and held many positions there.

Lawrence was a dairy farmer and currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon.

He belonged to Lutheran Layman’s League, the Mission Board was a secretary for the Morning Meditation Board, was the president of the Tri County Electric Board, the Henry County Dairy Board, and was a member of the Holstein Association.

His Family: Surviving are sons, Thomas L. (Carole) Gerken, Lt. Col. USAF retired, of Vernon Center, NY, Lawrence C. Gerken, Jr., Liberty Center, Daniel L. (Nancy) Gerken, Holgate; daughters, Linda A. (Dr. Bernard) Erven, Columbus, OH, Judy K. (Frank) Hess, Wooster; and a foster daughter, Diane Hinojosa, Toledo; 23 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Goff and brothers Archie Gerken, Reinhold Gerken, and Norman Gerken.

His Farewell Services: A celebration of life will be on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 11:00 am in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon with Reverend Pete Marcis and Reverend Charles Kramer officiating.

Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery.

Friends will be received in Zachrich Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Holgate on Thursday, October 29 from 2- 4 and 6-9.

Lawrence will lie in state at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Lutheran Hour, Morning Meditation, St. Paul Lutheran Church, or a charity of your choice.

Edith Catherine Wagner

Edith Catherine Wagner, age 86, died Thursday, October 22 in her New Bavaria home.

Her Legacy: She was the daughter of John and Eugenie (Okuley) Seifert born January 18, 1923 in New Bavaria.

On July 9, 1941 she married Urban Wagner and he preceded her in death on July 25, 1982.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria, the Rosary Altar Society, CL of C and VFW Auxiliary.

Her Family: Edith is survived by sons, Ron (Karen) Wagner, Continental, Larry (Judy) Wagner, Defiance, and Gary (Cindi) Wagner, Marblehead; a daughter, Janet (Dennis) Hohenbrink, Leipsic; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a brother, Leo Seifert, rural Defiance; and sister, Rita Shiarla, New Bavaria.

Preceding Edith in death are sisters, Luella Conkright, Stella Watson and a brother, Leonard Seifert.

Her Farewell Services: A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 26, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria at 10:00 am with Father Stephen Stanbery officiating.

Friends will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Holgate from 1-5 and 6-8 pm on Sunday.

The Rosary will be recited that evening at 6:45 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Dwayne Thomas Burow
March 25, 1994 - December 9, 2009

Dwayne Thomas Burow age 15, of Holgate, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

His Legacy: He was born March 25, 1994 in Great Falls, Montana.

He was a freshman at Holgate High School and was very caring and mechanically minded.

His Family: He is survived by his mother, Theresa (Rod) Blanton, Holgate; his father David Carl Burow, Defiance; a brother, David Carl Burow, Jr., Columbus, Ohio; aunts, Brenda, Victoria and Carlene; uncle Bubba; and many cousins.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his grandparents.

His Farewell Service: A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 14 at 12:00 pm in the Pleasant Township cemetery, New Bavaria.

Memorial contributions can be made to the family to help with medical bills and funeral expenses.

Zachrich Funeral Home assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Kendall "Mac" Michaelis
April 5, 1955 - January 28, 2010

Kendall “Mac” Michaelis, age 54, of Hamler, died Thursday afternoon, January 28, 2010 at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay after a long battle with cancer.

His Legacy: He was born to Edwin Frederick and R. Charlene (Swihart) Michaelis on April 5, 1955 in Defiance.

He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1973.

On June 1, 1991, he married Connie DeVore.

Ken worked in the warehouse at Johns Manville in Defiance, was member of GMP Local 51, and a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Hamler.

Mac belonged to the New Bavaria Sons of the AMVETS #599, Sons of the American Legion, Hamler and was a former member of the Hamler Fire Department.

He enjoyed bowling and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

His Family: He is survived by his wife, Connie; parents, Edwin and Charlene of Hamler; step children, Ryan (Paula) Courtney of Bloomdale, OH and Megan (Ryan) Courtney-Angus of Sagamore Hills, OH; grandchildren, Quinn, Olivia, Isabella, Tyler, and Madison; and a sister, Karen Michaelis of Hamler.

His Farewell Services: A Celebration of Mac’s life will be Monday, February 1, 2010 in Hope Lutheran Church, Hamler at 10:30 am with Reverend Lindsey Shaner and Pastor Meg Knape officiating.

Burial will follow in Hope Lutheran cemetery.

Friends will be received in Zachrich Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Holgate on Sunday from 1-9 pm and 1 hour prior to the church service on Monday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, Bridge Hospice of Findlay or Hope Lutheran Church.
