Darrell Elam

Darrell Elam, 52, of Findlay, passed away at 4:24 a.m., Friday, December 16, 2011 at Blanchard Valley Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1959 to the late David and Elaine (Covington) Elam in Detroit, MI. Darrell is survived by two sons: Courtney Robertson of MI and Dareyelle White of IN; two daughters: Inisha Johnson of Cincinnati and Ebony (Brenda) Elam of NY; two sisters: Denise V. Elam and Crystal E. (Diamond) Johnson, both of Detroit, MI; seven grandchildren; and best friends: Tim Patterson and Jeffrey Frost of Findlay. He was also preceded in death by several siblings. He was employed at TH Plastics in Findlay. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 31, 2011 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay.

Anthony L. Woods

Anthony L. Woods, 53, of Grand Junction, CO, formerly of Van Buren, OH, passed Sunday, December 18, 2011 in a motorcycle accident. He was born May 2, 1958 to Ed Woods and the late Donna (Bright) Woods. He married Linda Stauffer, and they divorced. He later married Candy LeMere and they divorced. Tony is survived by a sister, Cindy Woods of Findlay, OH; nephew, Shawn Rossi of Findlay, OH; five children: Jeremy (Connie McCabe) Woods of North Baltimore, OH, Stan (Erin Launder) Woods of Candler, NC, Amy (Tremell D.) Foster, Ashley (Richard Coltrinari) Woods of Fruita, CO and Chelsea Woods of Grand Junction, CO. Tony is also survived by a brother-in-arms, Mike "Sammy" Morehead. Tony is survived by eight grandchildren: Lily, Leshae, Jasmine, Gabriel, Tremell V.J., Anthony, Stran, and Treylynn. Tony is proceeded in death by his mother, Donna (Bright) Woods, his nephew, David Rossi, and granddaughter Paytonn Garlick. Tony was a member of the Eagles Aerie 595 in Grand Junction, CO. He was a master pipe fitter and a member of the Sprinklers Fitters Local 669, he worked in the Fire Protection field for 33 years with various companies and was currently employed with Western States Fire Protection in Denver, CO. Tony was an avid motorcycle rider for many years. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, January 2, 2012 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay. Fr. Tim Sattler will officiate. Visitation will be three hours (1:00-4:00 p.m.) prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Maxine M. Bowman

Maxine M. Bowman, age 88, formerly of 930 Summit Street in Findlay, died at 5:35am on Thursday at the Heritage Care Center in Findlay. She was born on February 20, 1923 in Findlay, Ohio to the late Leon B. and Naomi E. (Crist) Sink. She married Robert F. Bowman in December of 1942 and he died in March of 1971. Maxine had been a secretary at the Boy Scouts Office and was the owner of the Recreation Lanes in Findlay for many years. She was inducted into the 2001 class of the Hancock Sports Hall of Fame for her bowling. She was known for teaching many children in Junior Bowling. She had been the President of the W.I.B.C. in Findlay. She had a special passion and loved her animals: Sheree, Misti, and Morris. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at The Heritage where she resided for the past three years as well as the staff of Heartland Hospice. She is survived by her daughter: Cheryl (Kelley) McCrate of Columbus Grove, Ohio. She also has two granddaughters: Natalie Harvitt and Nannette (Josh) Cropsey, as well as twin great grandchildren: Keziah and Jackson Cropsey. Maxine is also survived by a brother: Jerry (Hester) Sink of Mesquite, Texas and was preceded in death by two brothers: Richard C. Sink and Dean Sink. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2012 from 1-5pm at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME in Findlay, where funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Monday. Pastor Josh Cropsey will officiate and burial will follow at Maple Grove cemetery in Findlay. Memorials may be given to either: The Lazarus Fund at the Findlay Animal Care Center, Teddys Rescue, or the Hancock County Humane Society in her memory.

Donald Keith Wymer

Donald Keith Wymer, 73, of Mt. Cory, OH passed away at 10:22 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012 at his residence. Donald was born to the late Howard and Pauline (Baney) Wymer in North Baltimore, OH on January 30, 1938. He married Eldora Kain in 1957, and they later divorced. In 1977, he married Erma Orians and they later divorced. On May 19, 1984, he married Marilyn (Welch) Wymer and she survives. Don is also survived by a daughter, Belinda "Buffy" (Andy) Sterling of Findlay; stepchildren: Linda Fisher of Jackson Center, OH, David Joe (Tammy) Hatch of Findlay, Susan (Richard) Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Barbara (Bruce) Alge of Jenera, OH, and Robert (Michelle) Vanderhoff of Rock Hill, SC; 23 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin Keith Wymer and a daughter, Beth Anne Wymer. Don was a 1956 graduate of Findlay High School. Don served his country proudly in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1962. He worked for and retired from Hercules Tire and Rubber Company in 2000 after 17 years of service. Don belonged to the Mt. Cory United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and sang with the "Gospel Four" Quartet. He was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #418 in Mt. Cory and the Valley of Toledo Scottish Rite. He also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star #550 of Rawson, OH and the Bluffton Senior Citizen Center, where he was president of the board. Don really enjoyed volunteering and helping others. Visitation will be from 1:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, where a Masonic service will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by an Eastern Star service. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 at the funeral home. Pastor Gerald D. Lewis will officiate and burial will follow in Harman cemetery, Gilboa, OH, where full military rites will be conducted by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Cory United Methodist Church.

Dale Eugene "Gene" Carty

Gene Carty, age 85, of Findlay, Ohio passed away at noon on Thursday, January, 12, 2012 at Blanchard Valley Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 8, 1926 in Sullivan, Indiana to William and Edna Carty. Gene married the love of his life, Sharon Lee Ford, on November 26, 1949, and she survives him. He is also survived by son Kevin and granddaughter Hunter of Columbus, OH, daughters Kim of Findlay, OH and Clair of Chicago, IL, brother Jim of Lafayette, IN. Preceding him in death were his daughter Kathy, his parents, and brother Bill. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and graduated from Indiana State University. Prior to moving to Ohio in 1964, he taught Special Education at Sullivan High School. In Ohio he pursued a career as a salesman. He was a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodge. Gene was also a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and volunteered for several organizations. He loved to golf, play bridge, and was a pie-baker extraordinaire. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for the Yankees, the Steelers, and Ohio State, unless they were playing Indiana. Gene was a lifelong Democrat. Visitation is Saturday, January 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, Ohio. Visitation in Sullivan, IN will be Monday, January 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow with Rev. Mike Brockway officiating. Interment will be at the family plot in Center Ridge cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kathy Carty Memorial Scholarship of The Community Foundation, 101 W. Sandusky Street #207, Findlay, Ohio 45840.

Maxine Ruth King

Maxine Ruth King, 89, of Findlay passed away at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Birchaven Village. Maxine was born on March 21, 1922, to the late Clarence E. and Eupha M. (VanAtta) Kraus in Marion Twp., Ohio. She married Clyde R. King on June 10, 1940, and he preceded her in death on April 16, 2009. Maxine is survived by a son, Dennis L. (Esther) King of Findlay; two daughters: Nancy (Ron) Cobb of Fostoria and Diane Cardwell of Norwalk, OH; a brother, Philip E. Kraus of Dearborn, MI; six grandchildren: Gary (Teresa) Cobb, Steve (Jodi) Cobb, Dan (Yvette) King, Kim (Tim) Brannan, Tim (Berni) Cardwell and Heather (Steve) Gundlach; and 12 great-grandchildren: Tylere, Andrew, Liam, Jessi, Jami, Eli and Clay Cobb, Travis Brannan, Emily and Luke Cardwell, Noah and Seth Gundlach. Maxine was also preceded in death by a son, Harold; son-in-law, Ed Cardwell; a brother, Alan D. Kraus. Maxine was a 1940 graduate of Arcadia High School. She was a member of West Independence United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was involved with the women's missions. She also loved to read and bake. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 19, 2011, at West Independence United Methodist Church. Reverends Steve Fisher and Lowell Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in Union cemetery, West Independence. Visitation will be from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay and 1 hour (10-11 a.m.) prior to the funeral at church. Memorials may be made to the West Independence United Methodist Church and/or Answering the Call Together Inc.

Richard "Dick" E. Daugherty

Richard E. "Dick" Daugherty of Findlay died at 3:40am on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Birchaven Care Center. He was born in Akron, Ohio, on July 21, 1922, to Richard E. and Oleta (McKee) Daugherty. In infancy he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, John and Edith Dillman in Findlay. Surviving are two sisters, Jean Miller of Fostoria and Betty Hite of Wauseon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Daugherty and Evelyn Veasy; and a brother, Robert O. Daugherty. He married Eleanor Lee Priest and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Rick Daugherty, a daughter, Linda (Jim) Saunders, both in Phoenix, AZ; and four grandchildren, Tricia Saunders, Becky Saunders, Scott Daugherty and Todd Daugherty. He is also survived by good friend and companion, Nancy Jadus. He went through the Findlay Public School System. Following graduation from Findlay Senior High School, where he was drum major of the band, he went to work at The Ohio Oil Company. He took Military Leave to volunteer for duty in the U. S. Coast Guard where he served aboard an anti-submarine convoy escort vessel for three years in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean in North Africa. Following World War II he attended and was graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Returning to Findlay he was hired by radio station WFIN, where he eventually became Sales Manager. He hosted many programs on radio, and local TV, including WFIN's Big Band Show and, the morning show, "Coffee Time." He played drums for many years with the "Moonlighters", a popular dance band. He was also Master of Ceremonies for the Findlay Civic Concert Band and Civic Jazz concerts at Riverside Park for 50 years. In 2004, a section of the park was dedicated in his honor and named Dick Daugherty Plaza. Mr. Daugherty's greatest outside interest was the Findlay Rotary Club. The Club gave him the official title of "Mister Findlay Rotary". He wrote and illustrated the book, "History of The Findlay Rotary Club". He was awarded their first Lifetime Achievement Award, which was later re-named the "Richard "Dick" Daugherty Lifetime Achievement Award". Mr. Daugherty was a 60-year member of the First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and taught an adult Sunday School class. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, 205 W. Sandusky St., Findlay where funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Thursday. Pastor Mark Brodbeck will officiate. Interment will be private. Memorials and condolences may be sent to the Dick Daugherty Scholarship Fund in his memory in care of The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, 101 West Sandusky Street, Suite 207, Findlay, Ohio 45840.

Louella M. "Mae" Lape

Louella M. "Mae" (Slack) Lape, age 88, of Findlay, passed away on September 26, 2008 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay. She was born on April 2, 1920, in Sullivan, OH to the late Ralph and Lois (Johnson) Slack. She married Lawrence E. "Gene" Lape on June 29, 1940, and he preceded her in death on December 13, 1970. Surviving are loving children, Nancy (Thomas) Kern of Brecksville, OH and William (Lisa Dietrich) Lape of Lake Bluff, IL and grandchildren; Thomas, John (Kate) and William (Nicole) Kern; John, Susan and Sally Lape; and great-grandchildren; T.J., Lindsay and Colin Kern; and dear friend Lee Ward. Mae was committed to hard work and self-improvement her entire adult life, beginning her career at the Ohio Bell Company, during the Great Depression. She was actively employed at Meijer's store until August of this year. She graduated from the Stautzenberger Business College while in her 70's and earned her Series 6, 63 and 7 securities licenses at the age of 60. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008, from 3:00 - 5:00 & 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, 205 W. Sandusky St., Findlay, OH 45840. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 29, 2008, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Scott Brewster officiating. Burial will follow in Knollcrest Gardens, East of Findlay. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mae to the University of Findlay.

Paul E. Hoppe

Paul E. Hoppe, age 82, of Findlay, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2008, at The Heritage. He was born on October 27, 1925, in Kenton, OH to the late Howard and Ella M. (Brisbin) Hoppe. Paul married Della Faye Cornwell on March 1, 1949, and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2006. Also surviving are his children, Debby (Dave) Oberly of Houston, TX; Fr. Sean "Roger" Hoppe OSB of St. Meinrad Archabbey, IN; Paula Hoppe of Findlay and two grandchildren; Dana (Greg) Arredondo, Danielle (Shane) Shoaf and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sister Joanne Armbruster. He served his country in the US Navy during WWII. Paul retired from Findlay City School's, working at Washington Elementary and Northview Primary, and enjoyed playing cards, baseball, bowling and camping. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, where the Vigil service will commence at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at 10:00 a.m at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Downtown with Fr. Sean Hoppe Presiding, the Women's Altar Society will begin praying the Rosary one half hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Knollcrest Gardens, East of Findlay where full military rites will be conducted by the Hancock County Memorial Squad. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Paul to The Heritage Manor, 2820 Greenacre Dr, Findlay, OH 45840 or the Bridge Home Health and Hospice, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, OH 45840.

William "Howdy" Park Houdeshell

William "Howdy" Houdeshell, 76, of Findlay, died at 10:40 a.m., March 2, 2011, at Birchaven Village, Findlay. He was born on December 23, 1934, in Findlay, to the late Brice and Grace (Moore) Houdeshell. He married Nancy L. Thomas on September 4, 1955, and she preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters: Diane (Tim) Walsh of Winchester, VA and Denise (Gary) Bair of Rudolph; a sister, Margaret Kirvan of Findlay; grandsons: Joel and Andrew Bair. Howdy was a retired self employed carpet layer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #227 and an avid Ohio State University Buckeye fan. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 6, 2011 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, with Pastor Gary Bair officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held 2 hours (2:00-4:00 p.m.) prior to the service at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Home Health and Hospice, in his memory.

Avis Lucille Schaller

Avis L. Schaller, age 84, of 600 Fox Run Rd. F.H. 16 of Findlay and formerly of Rawson, Ohio died at 4:10pm on Friday at Blanchard Valley Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on March 24, 1922 in Orange Township to the late Roy S. and Mary Gertrude (Gibson) Marshall. She married Adelbert C. (Del) Schaller on January 6,1945 and he died on December 14, 2005. She was retired from a clerical position at RCA. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Findlay, the Tawa Garden Club, and the Bluffton Golden Swingers Band. She had been the operating secretary at the Hancock County Fairgrounds. She enjoyed the Grand Court Activities including Bingo, the Art Classes and putting together puzzles. She loved to sew, cross stitch, crochet and enjoyed flower gardening. She is survived by two sons: Neil O. (Vicky Dukes) Schaller of Findlay and Nelson A. Schaller of Eleva, Wisconsin as well as two daughters: Vicki L. (Greg) Cole of Findlay and Trudy J. (Michael) Miller of Huron, Ohio. She has 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two half brothers: Wade and Carson Marshall. Visitation will be held from 3-5 and 6-8pm on Monday at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME in Findlay and one hour prior to the funeral services at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 10:30am on Tuesday. Pastor Robert J. Krueger will officiate and interment will be at Pleasant View cemetery. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church in her memory.

Gladwin Edmund Smith

Gladwin Edmund Smith, age 51, of Findlay died at 8:30AM Sunday, January 28, 2007 at his residence. He was born April 22, 1955 in Findlay to the late Wilbur and Dortha (Litzenburg) Smith. He is survived by: fiancee, Taunda Ziessler; sons, Trevor and Anthony Smith; daughters, Tabitha Weaver; Charlotte and Danielle Garza; brother, Logan Merrill (Marilyn S.) Vining; sisters, Loveda (Norm) Hamlin; Lois Marlene Flugga; grandchildren, Jordan and Tarren Weaver, all of Findlay; and half-sister, Sally (Denny) Leeper of FL. One sister, Patricia Coleman preceded him in death. He had attended Findlay High School. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Mike McClurg officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Findlay where the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad will be presenting full military rites. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the services (12-2PM) Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Trevor and Anthony Smith in his memory.
