PHYLLIS ACKLEY

Canaanville - Phyllis Jean Halbirt Ackley of Wickingham Farm in Canaanville, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Fairfield Hospital in Lancaster. She was the daughter of Nelle Hill Halbirt and Leslie E. Halbirt. In her early years she attended Canaanville Grade School, graduated from Rome Canaan High School at sixteen, and attended Ohio State University School of Nursing in the Cadet Nurse Corps Program. She later studied cytology for cancer research at Ohio State University and practiced in Columbus, Washington D.C., and Annapolis, MD. She was a member of the American Association of Clinical Pathologists and the American Society of Cytology.
After retirement, she became a member and officer of the Canaanville Methodist Church. She assisted in establishing the Athens County Museum and Historical Society and was a member of the Nabby Lee Ames Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter 274 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Association for Research and Enlightenment. She was a seeker of spiritual wisdom, studying yoga, philosophy and religion, and a graduate of the Silva Mind Control Organization.
She enjoyed her family, friends, her flowers and pets, and her home at Wickingham, which is recorded on the National Registry of Historic Places.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lt. Col (Ret.) Autmer Ackley; three treasured children and their spouses; Merrie Lee and Mike Roller, Michael and Jan Ackley, and Kathryn Marie Graham and Donn Huffman; a granddaughter, Samantha Jean Roller; four step-grandchildren; Sarah Antolino, Gina Stasulli-Green, Michael Stasulli and Daniel Stasulli; and two step-great grandchildren; Paige Marie Green and Kaila Jaden Stasulli.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Kathryn Leslie Roller.
Burial will be in the West Union Street cemetery near her family. It is requested that flowers be omitted and contributions made to Canaanville Methodist Church.

Ralph Guthrie

Ralph L. Guthrie
ATHENS – Ralph L. Guthrie, 64, of Athens, passed away on April 9, 2003, at his home surrounded by those who loved him.
Born April 23, 1938, in Athens, he was the son of Leola "Lee" Guthrie, of Athens, and the late Ralph W. Guthrie, and brother to Otis D. (Sheila) Guthrie of Shade, and Mary Lou (Jim) Rigg of Wilkesville.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Ramona M. Miller Guthrie; and 7 children, Gerlene "Geri" (Daniel) Canter of Athens; Daniel L. (P.J.) Guthrie of Glouster; Dana "Frank" (Mary Beth) Guthrie of Hamden; Angela L. Hansen of Palmer, Alaska; Denton A. (Lori) Guthrie of Albany; David Guthrie and Maranda Massie of Athens; and Devlin Guthrie and Adrienne Tope of Athens. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Matthew and Courtney Canter; Noah and Bryce Guthrie; MacKenzie, Dustin, and Dylan Guthrie; Jessica and Candace Hansen; Kevin Strickland; Joseph Miller; Keilee and Kaitlyn Guthrie; and canine companion Tez.
Before retiring from Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Center he worked at the Athens County Garage and Altier Brothers Drilling Company.
He served in the US Army and was a member of the Savannah Chapter of the Masonic Lodge.
His hobbies included harness racing and basketball. He coached several biddy leagues and AAU teams for both boys and girls leagues.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by an uncle, Victor Stover; and a nephew, Darren Guthrie.
Services will be held on Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with John Elswick and Bill O’Brien officiating. Burial will be at Bates cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hope Lodge, c/o American Cancer Society, 11432 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44106.

Herman D. Henry

THE PLAINS – Herman D. Henry, 71, of The Plains, died early Monday morning, April 5, 2004, at the Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born December 1, 1932, in Clifton, WV, he was the son of the late Earl Sr. and Edna Mowery Henry.
Herman was retired from the U.S. military with 20 years of service, and was Korean War veteran. Additionally, he retired from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Identification (BCI&I), after working there 32 years. Upon his retirement from BCI&I, he also served as a deputy for the Vinton County Sheriff’s Department.
Herman was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church, and the Athens American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ima Jean Henry; two sons, Richard Henry of Springfield, and Jay (Jacque) Henry of Mineral Wells, WV; three grandsons, Jeff Henry of Mineral Wells; Chris Henry of Springfield; and Jason Henry of Mineral Wells; one great granddaughter, Alyssa Henry of Springfield; two brothers, Earl Jr. (Sitty) Henry of New Haven, WV, Joe (Oreda) Henry of Oklahoma; and one sister, Janice (Mike) Buskirk of West Lafayette.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Hood.
Services will be held Thursday, at 1:00 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Reverend David Roach officiating. Burial will be at Athens Memory Gardens, where military services will be conducted by the Athens VFW, Post 3477, and the American Legion, Post 476.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Mabelmae Van Dyke

ATHENS – Mabelmae Van Dyke, 87, of Winfield Illinois, and formerly of Athens, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Wynscape Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Wheaton, IL.
Born March 21, 1917, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Elizabeth Burleigh Frank.
Mabelmae received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1967, and her Masters Degree in 1971 from Ohio University. She taught school for many years at the New Marshfield and Hillard School Systems.
She is survived by a son, Fred (Linda) Van Dyke; and two granddaughters, Rachel and Liel.
Mabelmae was preceded in death by two sisters, Forrest Martin, and Ethel, and a brother Nihle Frank.
There will be no calling hours observed at the request of the family. Graveside services will be held Friday, at 10:00 a.m. at Alexander cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Marcia E. Murphy

ALBANY - Marcia E. Murphy, 58, of Albany, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Russell's Nursing Home, Albany.
Born May 19, 1945, in St. Johns Michigan, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Betty Welch Penix.
There will be no services at the request of the family.

Wyatt E. Robinson

NEW MARSHFIELD – Wyatt E. Robinson, 43, of New Marshfield, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, due to injuries received on January 6, after falling from a tree.
Born January 14, 1960 in Athens, he was the son of Alice C. Leedy Cheaton (Charles) and the late Alva C. Robinson.
Wyatt Robinson worked as a tree serviceman in Athens for Bob Smart.
He is survived by ex-wife Linda Hall; their daughter and son, Terry Lynn Robinson and Bubby Robinson; eleven brothers and sisters, Larry Robinson, Mary Robinson, Pat Robinson, Kim Aeiker, Marilyn Aeiker, Roy Robinson, A.C. Robinson, John Robinson, Jackie Robinson, Liz Robinson, and Kathy Robinson.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Clinton Anthony Robinson.
Graveside services will be Friday at Noon at Clarks Chapel cemetery, Athens, with John Elswick officiating. Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral home, Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Anna Pearl Williams

Anna Pearl Williams, 97, of Stewart, went to be with the Lord Wednesday evening June 18, 2003, at Arcadia Nursing Home, Coolville.
She was born March 4, 1906, in Meigs County, the daughter of the late Melvin and Eva Lula Moore Sargent.
She loved quilting and was formally in a quilting circle. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Senior Citizen Center of Athens, Shade Methodist Church, and attended the Stewart Methodist Church.
She is survived by four children, Eva Lewis of Huntington, W.Va; Roger (Jane) Williams of Franklin, KY; Roma Lee Chrislip of Coolville; Joyce (Dean) Browning of Guysville; an adopted daughter, Vicki Lou Phillips of Meigs County; a step grandson raised in the home, Jerry Lee Frye of Virginia; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd E. Williams, June 17, 1979; two sons, Earl Everett and Fletcher Milan Williams; and three brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in Burson cemetery, Shade.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Mary M. Caster

The Plains – Mary M. Caster, 84, of The Plains, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, June 19, 2003. She had been a resident of Hickory Creek Nursing Home.
She was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church and the Naomi Sunday School Class.
Born April 26, 1919 in Torch, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charley F. and Bessie Russell Willett.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jean and Don Sycks of The Plains; granddaughter Lori (Todd) Conrad of Cincinnati; and a sister Elma (Jim) Allen of Waterford.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence in 1965.
Services will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Reverend Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be at Alexander cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, noon to 2:00 p.m.

Ida L. Ware

The Plains – Ida L. Ware, 83, of The Plains, went to be with her Lord, Monday evening, June 23, 2003 at Logan Health Care Center.
Born February 21, 1920, in Calhoun County, WV, she was the daughter of the late John and Rebecca (Settles) Hickman.
She was a member of the Vore Ridge Community Church and loved serving the Lord.
She is survived by five daughters, Wanda Creamer of Stewart; Loretta McDaniel of The Plains; Lucy (Charles) Hawk of Athens; Shirley Pettet (Earnest) of Shawnee; Pauline (Hiley) Wogan of Chesterhill, a granddaughter, Brenda (Keith) Douglas, who was raised in the home. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Ware in 1994, an infant son, Ronald, and an infant grandson, Vern Earl Scott.
Services will be Friday, 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, with Pastor Carl Radcliff, Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Athens Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Jeffrey Allen Mills

GLOUSTER – Jeffrey Allen Mills, 21, of Glouster, passed away Saturday July 5, 2003, in Perry County. He was born June 7, 1982, in Hocking County.
He was the son of Holly and Kim Keirns, of Glouster, and the late John “Jack” Mills. He was a 2001 graduate of Trimble High School.
He is survived by a son, Ryan Mills, of Clearwater, Florida; three sisters, Jennifer Keirns and special friend, Casey Christa, of Glouster, Andrea (Tony) Perez, of Germantown, Maryland, and Melissa (Bill) Delaney, of Vass, North Carolina; grandparents Jan and Diana Angle, of Glouster, Jim and Ruth Ann Keirns, of Glouster, Judy Perine, of Jacksonville, and Jack Mills, of Columbus; great grandparents, Dorothy Andrachick, of Glouster, and Lynn Brannon, of Fortland, Missouri; a niece and nephew Nicole and Tylar Delaney, of Vass, North Carolina; two aunts, April Spradlin, of Lakeland, Florida, and Debra (Bob) Lowery, of Glouster; an uncle, John (Addie) Keirns, of McConnelsville; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Mills; two uncles, Aaron Angle, of Glouster, and Jim Keirns, of McConnelsville; a special aunt, Janet Fierce, of Glouster.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at the old Bishopville Church of Christ, Glouster, with John Wright officiating. Burial will be in Glouster cemetery.
Friends may call on Tuesday, 5-8 p.m. at the old Bishopville Church of Christ. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Roy E. Martin

MILLFIELD – Roy E. Martin, 73, of Millfield, died Friday evening, July 11, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born March 5, 1930, in Vinton County, he was the son of the late Emeril Martin and Pauline Lighfoot Martin Coulson Balch. He was an honorary member of the Jacksonville VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Jago Wilson Martin; two daughters, Karen Hutchinson of Ravenna, and Kathy Bartholomew of Mantua; two sisters, Barbara (John) Balch of Millfield, and Helen Smith of Florida; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Martin; a wife, Lil Martin; a sister, Beatrice McDaniel; and special friend, Helen Cowaski.
Roy was well liked and a friend to everyone, he will be sadly missed.
There will be no calling hours observed. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at the Jacksonville VFW. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

B. Richard Whitmer

ATHENS – B. Richard “Dick” Whitmer, 80, of Athens, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his home.
He was born September 2, 1922 in New Holland, Ohio, the son of the late Robert and Artie Barclay Whitmer.
He graduated from North High School, Columbus, in 1940. As a boy, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He organized the first Explorer Patrol and served as Assistant Scout Master for many years. He was active in the youth fellowship at Kohr Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served as president of the Youth of Ohio Synod of the Presbyterian Church during the year of 1942.
He joined the United States Army in 1942, and participated in the Normandy Invasion, the liberation of Paris and the assault on Germany. He was wounded in Germany and awarded the Purple Heart.
He worked for the War Department as chief of civilian personnel from October, 1945 until March, 1947 in Paris. There he met his bride-to-be, Francoise, in 1945, and they married in 1946.
Dick worked for the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Administration in Columbus, until 1959. He studied at Ohio State University, receiving his degree in Business Administration.
Dick and his family moved to Urbana in 1959, and he became Executive Vice President, Managing Officer for the Perpetual Federal Savings and Loan Association. They left Urbana in 1976 and came to Athens, where Dick served as President, Managing Officer of the Athens County Savings and Loan Company.
He served as Loan Officer at Bank One of Athens from 1978 through 1981. From 1981 to 2001 he operated the B.R. Dick Whitmer Appraisal Service in Athens.
Dick was a 25 year member of the Lions Club and longtime member of the Athens Fish and Game Club. He was a past-president of the Urbana Chamber of Commerce.
Dick was active in his church, the Alexander Presbyterian Church, where he was a church elder and a member of several committees. He loved the Lord and his church family.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Myrl Whitmer, and a sister, Martha Shirtzinger.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Francoise C. Whitmer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara (Michael) Ward, of Athens, Christine (James) Lentz, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Matthew (Jessica) Ward, Benjamin Ward, Stephanie Lentz, and Andrew Lentz. He is also survived by two sisters, Annalee Harrison, and Ruth (Earl) Lang, of Columbus; and a brother, Gerald (Betty) Whitmer of Peachtree City, Georgia; and a special and good friend, David Hughes, of Athens. He is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and great nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. Ed Brown officiating. Burial will be in West Union Street cemetery with military services conducted by the Athens VFW, Post 3477 and the American Legion, Post 21.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, from 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alexander Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 158, Albany, Ohio, 45710.
