Mildred L. Dean

ATHENS – Mildred L. Dean, 76, of Athens, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy.
She was born April 4, 1927, in Logan County WV. She was the daughter of the late William Hunt and Iva Mae Cullison Hunt.
Mildred, a loving mother, is survived by five sons, George (Sandy) Pitts, of Burlington, Iowa, Ted Pitts, of Athens, Billyjoe Pitts, of Athens, John Dean, of Orlando, FL, and Robert (Debbie) Dean, of Rockton, IL; two daughters, Ivajean Marrow, of Colorado Springs, CO, and LaDonna (Bob) Peck, of Athens; one brother, Herbert (Barbell) Hunt, of San Luis, CA; two sisters, Lila Mae Dean, of Orlando, FL, Betty Marshall, of Machesney Park, IL; a sister-in-law, Betty Dean of Machesney Park; a brother-in-law, Robert Schmidt, of Rockford, IL; six grandsons; eight granddaughters; fifteen great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerold Dean, Jr.; a son, Fred Pitts; a brother, Charles Hunt; a brother-in-law, Richard Dean; and a sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt.
Per her request, there will be no visitation or funeral services. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Artie B. Miller

ATHENS - Artie B. Miller, 95, of Athens, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Arcadia Nursing Center, Coolville. Born September 14, 1907, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Agnes Suttle.
She was a homemaker and a member of the South Canaan Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Miller of Athens, and Bert Miller (Sandra), of Athens; four grandsons, Michael Miller, Jeff Miller, John Miller and his fiancée, Kim DeVore, David Miller (Michelle), all of Athens; four great grandsons, Matthew Miller, of Athens, Tyler Miller, of Albany, Isaac Miller, of Athens, and Ian Miller, of Athens; one great granddaughter, Brittany Miller, of Albany; one brother, Herbert Suttle, of Florida; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bert Miller, in 1986, a daughter-in-law Marie Miller; eight brothers; and two sisters.
Graveside services will be held Friday, July 25, 2003, at South Canaan cemetery, Athens, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Canaan Baptist Church, 17385 S. Canaan Rd, Athens, Ohio 45701.
There will be no calling hours observed, with arrangements being made by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Athens.

Mary B. Conte

ATHENS – Mary B. Conte, 66, of Athens, passed away in the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Stanley Smathers, Monday evening, July 28, 2003. Our beloved sister has gone to be with her husband, Salvatore Conte, in the arms of our Lord.
She was born December 13, 1936, in Albany, the daughter of the late William and Bessie Barnhouse Bolin.
Besides her sister Lois (Stanley) Smathers, she is survived by another sister, Debbie (Rusty) Perry; three brothers, Charles (Judy) Bolin, James (Barb) Bolin, and Tony (Sue) Bolin; two stepchildren, Pam Conte-Delisi, and Joe (Nancy) Conte; three granddaughters; one grandson; a special niece and nephew, Nina and Michael Pietrangelo; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Betty Voorhees, and Mabel Waterman.
There will no calling hours or services. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Appalachian Community Hospice, P.O. Box 768, Athens, Ohio 45701-0768.

Dale E. Shultz

THE PLAINS – Dale E. Shultz, 76, of The Plains, died Sunday, August 3, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
Born January 16, 1927 in Logan, he was the son of the late Harold Shultz and Cora Hutchins Shultz.
Dale was a U.S. WWII Navy Veteran. He was a former employee of GE in Logan, the Logan Federal Savings and Loan, Athens County Savings and Loan, Cambridge Savings and Loan, Columbus Auto Parts Credit Union, and the Hocking Valley Credit Union, where he retired as President.
He was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church, the Mingo Masonic Lodge 171, the Athens Chapter, the Athens Council, and the Athens Commandery for 31 years, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Shultz; two sons, Roger (Donna), of Bound Brook, NJ, and Randy Shultz, of The Plains; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nathan Shultz; and one sister, Mariam Shriner, of Logan.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., at The Plains United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Grove cemetery, Logan, where military services will be conducted.
Friends may call at the Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, Tuesday, from 5-8 p.m. and one hour prior to service on Wednesday, at the church.
Winifred “Winnie” E. Taylor

ATHENS – Winifred “Winnie” E. Taylor, 78, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, March 31, 2004, at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Born August 17, 1925, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ina Norman Newman.
Winnie was a member of Church Women United, the American Red Cross, the March of Dimes, and a member of the Girl Scouts of America, as well as a former troop leader.
She was a member of the church where her great aunt was a founding member, the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she served as Treasurer for many years. Winnie was also a trusted housekeeper for several Athens area residents.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Taylor; a son, Craig (Michele) Taylor; two grandsons, Jonathan and Brian; five siblings, Edward Newman, Letha Kennedy, James Newman, Herbert Newman, and Charles Newman; and special friend, Frances Raymond.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Taylor in 1986; two brothers George and John Newman; and a sister, Margaret Cunningham.
Services will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens. Burial will be at West Union Street cemetery, Athens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Randy L. Rutter

MILLFIELD – Randy L. Rutter, 47, of Millfield, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at his brother’s home.
Born January 5, 1957 in Athens, he was the son of Oris Ray (Bud) Rutter of Millfield, and the late Pauline White Rutter.
Randy was self employed, and was a former employee of the Hocking Conservancy District. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by four sisters, Vickie (Jeffrey) Hillen of Lancaster, Trina (Harry) Barnes of Millfield, Lisa (Jamie) Wade of The Plains, and Stephanie (Bryan) Witham of Athens; four brothers, Mike Rutter of Millfield, Jeff (Virginia) Rutter of The Plains, Donnie (Natalie) Rutter of Albany, and Rodney (Annette) Rutter of Millfield; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews; and a special friend of his father, Irene.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Allen, Steven Ray, and Bryan Keith.
Services will be held Friday, at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Reverend Steve Bentley officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery, Millfield.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Doris C. Price

ATHENS - Doris D. Price, 82, of Athens, died March 22, 2004, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus. There will be no services or calling hours at the request of the family.

Anna B. Coe

ATHENS – Anna B. Coe, 88, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, in Marietta.
Born April 30, 1915, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Leona Cheadle Bolin.
Anna was a member of the Athens Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Richard (June) Coe of Athens, and Foster Coe of Orlando; one daughter, Shirley (Ronald) Dean of Albany; one foster son, Charles Bullock of Athens; a sister-in-law, Pearl Bolin; a niece, Penny (Gary) Wisor; special friends, David and Gordon Bolin, and Garnet Gillespie; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and thirteen great great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Coe; one son, Owen Coe; three brothers, Lloyd, Jack and Homer Bolin; and two sisters, Paulene Brown, and June Tillman.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with David Bolin officiating. Burial will be at Canaanville cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Virginia L. Goodwin

ATHENS – Virginia L. Goodwin, 78, of Athens, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born March 9, 1926, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Earl D. and Claire G. Brown Lee.
During her career, Virginia was a legal secretary at the law office of the late Samuel B. Erskine; as well as at Ohio University for 23 years, serving as a Secretary in the Chemistry Department, and also in the office of the President of Ohio University before her retirement.
Virginia was very active in the community, where she was a member of the local chapter of Professional Secretaries International, the Linda Lash Evans Group, the Child Conservation League, the Christian Women’s Fellowship Group #1, and also a member of the First Christian Church of Athens.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Richard) Cone of Athens; two sons, Michael (Candy) Goodwin of Athens, and John (Margy) Goodwin of Athens; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Goldie May Burke of Amelia, Ohio.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary W. Cook.
Services will be held Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Joseph Eubanks officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Appalachian Area Hospice, or the Athens Area Visiting Nurses Association, at P.O. Box 768, Athens, Ohio 45701.

Stephen R. Brooks

ZALESKI – Stephen R. Brooks, 53, of Zaleski, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home.
Born November 8, 1950, in Athens, he was the son of Donna Hudnall Brooks of Athens, and the late Kenneth Brooks.
Steve was a graduate of Alexander High School, and served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a coal miner for the Meigs County Coal Mines, where he retired after 25 years of service. Steve was also a member of the Athens VFW, Post 3477 and the Athens American Legion, Post 21.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Aubreanna Wilson; a brother, Roger Brooks of Athens; and a sister, Jodi (Marty) Bailey of Guysville; and special friends John Swaim, and Pastor William Hixson.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Jimmy Brooks.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m., at the New Marshfield cemetery, with Pastor William Hixson officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Athens VFW and the Athens American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Athens VFW, Post 3477, 355 East State Street, Athens, or the Athens American Legion, Post 21, 520 West Union Street, Athens, Ohio 45701.

Bruce “General” Rubin

ATHENS – Bruce “General” Rubin, 53, of Athens, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home.
Born August 14, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son the late Sidney and Belle Resnick Rubin.
“General” had opened several businesses in Athens, including Harpo’s, and Chiccalini’s Pasta Palace. He was also a long-time participant in the Athens Men’s Open Softball League.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 28 years, Anne Sessums Rubin; beloved daughter, Samantha W. Rubin; and a host of friends.
Services will be held Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rabbi Mark Goldfarb officiating. Burial will be at Alexander cemetery, Athens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1110 Dennison Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43201-9803.

David A. McClain

ATHENS – David A. McClain, 71, of Athens, passed away Friday evening, March 12, 2004, after an extended illness.
Born December 15, 1932, in Athens, he was the son of the late Aubrey and Gladys Moore McClain.
David was a former employee of the State of Ohio, and the Athens County Garage, and retired from The Plains Water District. He was a member of the NRA, and was enjoying his retirement as an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by six children, Bill (Lisa) Hart of Athens, Debbie (Tom) Cornelious of Athens, Denise (Larry) Barnhart of Athens, Paula (Charlie) Black of Athens, David (Jenny) McClain of California, and Patrick (Laureen) McClain of Athens; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a very special long-time friend, Eleanor Breeze.
Besides his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl M. Smith McClain; a daughter, Lynn A. Ross; and a half sister, Betty.
Services will be held, Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be at Wyers cemetery, Stewart.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 p.m.
