Jack Sayre

THE PLAINS – Jack Sayre, 78, of The Plains, passed away Saturday morning, March 6, 2004 at his home.
Born July 6, 1925, in Trimble, he was the son of the late William and Georgia Moody Sayre.
Jack was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during WWII, and was a member of the Christ Community Wesleyan Church, Albany.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Mae Sayre; a step-daughter, Helen Jane (Barney) Andrews of Melbourne, FL; a stepson, Patrick (Suzanne) Crawford of Louisville, KY, a step daughter, Grace Rodehaver of Dayton; a sister, Phyllis Hoffman of Connecticut; a brother, Max Sayre of Arizona; six grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Sayre; a twin brother who died at birth; brothers Myron and Foster; and sisters Donna and Barbara.
Services will be held Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jack’s memory to Appalachian Community Hospice, 30 Herrold Avenue, Athens, Ohio 45701.

James Edward Dickens

NESONVILLE – James Edward Dickens, 66, of Circle 33 Road, Nelsonville died Monday March 1, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital of Nelsonville.
He was born June 15, 1937 in Athens County, he was the son of the late Carl Edward and Kathryn Maxine Barnhart Dickens.
He was a graduate of Chauncey Dover High School; he was retired from Athens Mold and Machine. He was a member of the Sons of Am Vets of Chauncey, Sons of American Legion, Logan Moose Lodge and the Athens Redman Lodge.
He is survived by a son Carl Dickens of Nelsonville, daughter Beverly (Butch) Cochran of The Plains; a special pet companion Elle Mae; five grandchildren, Charla, Stephanie, Lindsey, Misti, and Roger; four great-grand sons, Tyler James and Cody Daniel Fennell, Christopher Bryce Heck and Zachary Allen Smith.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Edna Markins Dickens, his second wife Betty Dickens, one brother Carl Everett Dickens.
Services will be Thursday at 11 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM.

Louise Faye Pyle

ATHENS – Louise Faye Pyle, 77, of Kettering and formerly of Athens, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born September 7, 1926, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Dora Ellen Wyatt Shields.
She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn (Bill) Walters of Florida, Barbara (David) Zientara of Dayton, Brenda (Ted) Tomashot of Dayton, and Leslie (Billy) Clendenen of Kettering; one son, Gary Pyle of Kettering; three brothers, Chuck, Darrell, and Roscoe Shields; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald H. Pyle; two sisters; seven brothers; and a grandson, Richard Anthony Marker.
Services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Reverend Steve Bentley officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday at Noon, one hour prior to service.

Ralph Koker, Jr.

ATHENS – Ralph Koker, Jr., 70, of Athens, died Monday February 2, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
Born July 4, 1933, he was the son of the late Ralph, Sr. and Martha Pinkerton Koker.
Ralph was a local businessman as the former owner of Buckeye Potato Chips, Koker’s Sporting Goods, K&K Coffee, and The Mine Tavern. He was a lifetime member of the Athens VFW, Post 3477, and AmVets Post 76; a member of American Legion Post 21, the Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Figgins Koker, whom he married August 6, 1983; five sons, Mike Koker of Vancouver, WA, Joe Koker of Louisville, KY, Tim Koker of Nelsonville, Joe Figgins of Athens, and Mark Figgins of Huron; a daughter, Kim (Rick) Nihiser of Logan; three brothers, Kenneth (Faith) Koker of Powell, TN, Richard (Barb) Koker of Syracuse, and Gerald Koker of Vancouver, WA; and nine grandchildren, Michael Joesph Koker, Chase Edward Koker, Kristan, Brittany and Danni Nihiser, Jacob, Hannah, Zackary, and Riley Figgins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul “P.D.” Figgins.
Services will be held Thursday, at 1:30 pm, at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with John Mucha officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery, where military services will be conducted by the Athens VFW Post 3477 and the Athens American Legion Post 21.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday from Noon until time of service.

Wanda Whitesel

ATHENS – Wanda L. Whitesel, 66, of Athens, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
Born October 8, 1936, in Athens, she is the daughter of the late Harold and Mary West Gillett.
Wanda was formerly employed at Ambassador Laundry, and was a cook at the Chi Omega Sorority in Athens.
She is survived by her husband, George Whitesel; ten sisters, Norma (Craig) Downey of Oregon, Virginia Ruth of Florida, Barbara Nicholes of Colorado, Sharon (Terry) Wingo of Albany, Lucy Gratham of West Virginia, Bonnie (Virgil) Reeder of Amesville, Frances (John) Tate of Pomeroy, Sue (George) Otten of Marietta, Sandra (Jerry) Evener of Athens, June (Ray) Haning of Albany; and a brother, Ted (Randi) Gillette of Shade.
Graveside services will be held Friday, at 11:00 a.m., at Athens Memory Gardens, with Pastor Carl Radcliff officiating.
Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, on Thursday, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Frances Gorman Rider

ATHENS - Frances J. Gorman Rider, 76, of Athens, died August 8, 2003, at Echo Manor Nursing Home in Pickerington.
Born July 6, 1927 in Providence, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Battalion Chief, Leo E. and Frances J. Dowling Gorman. Frances was formerly employed as a Community Case Worker for the State of Rhode Island.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Regina) Rider of Athens, and a daughter, Gail Aleen (Mark) Law of Pickerington; two grandsons, Vincenzo "Vinnie, " and Mitchell Rider of Athens; a brother, James "Lou" Gorman of Weston, MA; two sisters, Virginia Moran of Narragansett, RI, and Mary Gorman of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Leo E. Gorman, Jr. of Shrewsbury, MA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Christ the King University Parish, with Father Martin J. Holler officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Street cemetery.
Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

Hattie Swartz

ATHENS - Hattie L. Swartz, 83, of Athens, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003 at Russell's Nursing Home in Albany.
Born Jan. 5, 1920 in The Plains, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Madgie Robinson Smith.
She worked many years for Kimes Convalescent Center. She was also a former employee of Southern Hotel in Columbus and was a foster grandparent. She had many best friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte (Gene) Estep of Athens, Eileen Rhoades of Athens; ten grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a half sister, Joan Hollandsworth of Groveport, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, George Perry and Ores Swartz; two grandchildren, Cecilia Rhoades and Joshua Estep.
Services will be Monday at 11:00 am at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Jim Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Zion cemetery in The Plains.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 2-4 and 6-8.

Lawrence Rutkoskie

CAMBRIDGE – Lawrence Rutkoskie, 97, of Cambridge, died Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the Red Carpet Health Care Center in Cambridge. Until his recent move, Lawrence resided with the Guernsey Residential, Inc. for over 15 years. He will be truly missed by all his family there. He also attended the Golden Rule Hab Center.
He was born July 22, 1906, in St. Joseph, Michigan. He was the son of the late George Rutkoskie and Pearl Johnson.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Leonard, and another brother, George Rutkoskie.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, at Mt. Calvary cemetery, Athens. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Lucille Scott

ATHENS – Margaret Lucille Scott, 90, of Athens, died Saturday evening, August 22, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born December 15, 1912, in Guysville, she is the daughter of the late Victor O. and Eva Fulton Carpenter.
Lucille graduated from Camden Clark School of Nursing and followed with a fulfilling nursing career. After many years of service, she retired as an Athens County Public Health Nurse. She went on to work at the Tuberculosis Hospital in Nelsonville and then retired from Kimes Convalescent Center in Athens. Lucille was a member of the Clarks Chapel Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Keith Scott; a sister, Lillian L. Cooley of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Cantner, and an infant brother.
Services will be held Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with the Reverend H. Willard Love officiating. Burial will be at Clarks Chapel cemetery.
Friends may call the funeral home Monday, from 2–4 and 6-8 p.m.

Alice B. Cornell

ATHENS – Alice B. Cornell, 80, of Athens, died Saturday, August 30, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born March 12, 1923 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Bertha Jane Moore Moore.
Alice was a loving and caring person who volunteered in area nursing homes for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Alfred Cornell; a son, John Cornell of Athens; two brothers, Daniel Moore of Nelsonville, and Kenneth (Karen) Moore of Nelsonville; three sisters, Ruther Kepler of Orrville, Jean Skivers of Nelsonville, and Joan (Keith) Palmer of Athens.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Cornell; a brother, Clyde Moore; and a sister, Dorothy Johnson.
Graveside services will be conducted, Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the New Marshfield cemetery, with Bill O’Brien officiating.
Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. until departure to graveside services.

Carol J. Pyle

FALL RIVER – Carol Sharples-Pyle, 68, of Richmond, VA (formerly of Fall River), passed away September 14, 2003, at the Arbors of Marietta in Marietta, Ohio, after a long illness.
Born October 31, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mildred Clark Sharples. She is survived by a son, Christopher (Angie) Pyle of Athens, Ohio; a daughter Abigail (Ellis) Barker of Richmond; and a granddaughter Isabel Barker of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held at The Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church, Bon Air, VA, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2003.
Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Carol Pyle to your local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

John H. McColley

GLOUSTER – John H. McColley, 64, of Glouster died Sunday evening, September 14, 2003, at Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg.
Born December 4, 1938, he was the son of the late Volley and Annie McClain McColley. He is survived by a brother, Arthur McColley of Glouster; a sister, Verna Mae Rutter of Redtown; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clarabell McColley; and several brothers and sisters.
Services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the Jacksonville VFW at a later date to be announced.

Lois Washburn

ATHENS – Lois E. Washburn, 84, of Athens, died Monday afternoon, September 15, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
Born December 24, 1918 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Edgar C. and Bessie Bolin Mariner.
Lois was a graduate of Athens High School. She worked at the Athens County Board of Education Office; she co-owned and operated Minister Letter Service, and served on the Board of Directors of the Athens County Savings and Loan. She was also owner and operator of the Washburn Travel Center. Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Athens.
She is survived by a niece, Carolyn Cade of The Plains; and a nephew Thomas Cade of Frederick, Maryland.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Washburn, in 1967; a brother, Willard Mariner; and two sisters, Emma Cade, and Elsie Geornor.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Mary Jo Yeakel officiating. Burial will be at West Union Street cemetery.
Friends may call the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from noon – 1:00 p.m.
