Virginia L. Goodwin

ATHENS – Virginia L. Goodwin, 78, of Athens, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born March 9, 1926, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Earl D. and Claire G. Brown Lee.
During her career, Virginia was a legal secretary at the law office of the late Samuel B. Erskine; as well as at Ohio University for 23 years, serving as a Secretary in the Chemistry Department, and also in the office of the President of Ohio University before her retirement.
Virginia was very active in the community, where she was a member of the local chapter of Professional Secretaries International, the Linda Lash Evans Group, the Child Conservation League, the Christian Women’s Fellowship Group #1, and also a member of the First Christian Church of Athens.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Richard) Cone of Athens; two sons, Michael (Candy) Goodwin of Athens, and John (Margy) Goodwin of Athens; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Goldie May Burke of Amelia, Ohio.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary W. Cook.
Services will be held Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Joseph Eubanks officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Appalachian Area Hospice, or the Athens Area Visiting Nurses Association, at P.O. Box 768, Athens, Ohio 45701.

Linda D. Morris

ATHENS - Linda D. Morris departed this life unexpectedly this past Memorial Day weekend surrounded by the things she loved; her home, pets and garden. She is survived by her husband George V. Morris, her parents Richard and Ann Ham, a sister Carol Ann Ham, three stepchildren George C. Morris, Stephanie Morris, Benjamin Morris, two grandchildren Lantz and Kai Morris. In lieu of services or a memorial it is requested that friends and family plant a tree in memory of Linda. Those of us whose lives and souls were touched by Linda will forever be the better.
Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Doris Tom

ATHENS – Doris Tom, of Athens, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus.
She was born in Meigs County, and was the daughter of the late Perry and Carrie Woody Smith.
She was a member of the Athens Church of Christ and one of the founding members of the C.C.L.
She is survived by two daughters, Roma (Jack) Beverage of Delaware, Ohio and Jan (Jim) Bernosky of Athens; four grandchildren, Tammie Goedde, Debbie Dorsey, Brad Ball and Mathew Bernosky; five great-grandchildren, Paige Goedde, Hunter Goedde, Jake Goedde, Nicole Dorsey and Alyssa Dorsey; a sister, Maugerite (Robert) O’Brien of Florida; and two nieces, Claudette (Don) Bosscawen of Florida and Kimberly O’Brien of Arizona.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl Tom; her sister, Adrian Chappel; and her brother Adroth Smith.
Services will be Saturday at 1:00 PM, at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. H. Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 PM. Contributions may be made to the Athens Church of Christ, 785 W. Union Street, Athens, Ohio 45701.

Freda Isabell Carsey Currens

ATHENS – Freda Isabell Carsey Currens, 93, of Athens, went to rest Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Russell’s Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Dave and Flossie Markin Carsey.
She was an active Grange member for years and worked for Pharmacy Drug Store and Laughlin Vending before retiring.
She is survived by her only granddaughter, Gina Currens; her only great granddaughter, Erica Currens; a daughter-in-law, Delores Currens; a brother, Dana (Helen) Carsey; a sister, Elizabeth (Stacy) Phillips; a sister-in-law, Lucille Carsey, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Currens, Sr.; her only child, Maurice Currens, Jr.; four brothers, Clarence, Wayne, Wesley, James Carsey and two infant brothers, Elias and Waid Carsey.
Per her request, private services will be Friday at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with burial in New Marshfield cemetery.

Ricky Losey

ATHENS – Ricky R. Losey, 29, of Athens, formerly of Glouster, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born May 20, 1975 in Athens, he was the son of Mae Losey of Glouster and the late Jerry Spears.
He was a graduate of Trimble High School where he was a wrestler and boxer. He was in the top 10% sales at Ricart and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Gulf War.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Sams Losey; three daughters, Mariah, Alexas and Elizabeth Losey all of the home; a sister, Jennifer (Mark) Barnhart of Glouster; two brothers, Jarrod (Trish) Losey of Glouster, and Eric Losey of Glouster; two Grandmother’s Deloris Losey of Millfield and Leoma Collins of Glouster; his father, Rick Collins and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his and father-in-law and mother-in-law Gib and Mary Sams.
Services will be Friday at 1 PM at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in Clarks Chapel cemetery where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 21 and Athens VFW Post 3477. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.

Charles E. Love Sr.

ATHENS – Charles E. Love Sr., 87 of Sunbury, Ohio, a former resident of Athens passed from this world into heaven Thursday, May 13, 2004.
He was the son of the late Ray and Mary (Bean) Love. He was Born January 29, 1917 in Kearney, Nebraska. When he returned to Athens he lived at the family farm “Rocky Point”. Prior to World War II he moved to Wyandotte, Michigan and worked for Penn Salt Chemicals. He was drafted into the army in 1941 to 1945. He married W. Pauline Steinmetz in 1944, with whom he had six children.
In 1981 he married Mrs. Irene Knuckles of Sunbury where he made his home and Country View Nursing Home. He was a member of Athens Church of Christ and attended Grace Baptist Church in Sunbury.
He leaves his wife and children; Irene Love, Sunbury; children, David (Cindy) Love, Michigan, Dawn Love Ruhinen (Lincoln), Athens, Deborah Love, Athens, Julie Love Hilliker (Allen), Michigan, Jody Ray Love (Lisa), Virginia, Richard Knuckles, Ella Mae Holmes and Judy Ulery; grandchildren, Ruby, Tad, Allen, Jacob, Schana, Christopher, James, Sarah, Brandon, Carter, Demi, Amy, Mike, Kenny, Rick, Mindy and Tammy; and also 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister and son Charles Love Jr. (2001).
Funeral services with military honors will be Monday, May 17, 2004 at Clark’s Chapel Church, Athens. Calling hours are two hours prior to services, with services starting at 1 PM. Interment will be at Clark’s Chapel cemetery. All veterans are welcome for honor guard. A luncheon will be served after services in the church basement. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Charles “Charley” Cline Moore

SAN FRANCISCO – Charles “Charley” Cline Moore – Born in Troy, N.Y., February 9, 1933, and passed away peacefully at the V.A. Medical Center, San Francisco, C.A. on May 7, 2004 after a long illness. He was a longtime attorney in S.F. Charley did his undergraduate studies at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army, Fort Benning, GA prior to attending the University of Michigan Law School. Upon graduation he moved to San Francisco where he began his law practice. Charley was a devoted and longtime member of The Family Club, where his greatest joy was producing many musicals and shows for his fellow members.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Moore of Athens and Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Cline of Albany.
He is survived by his sister, Maryann Moore Merritt; niece, Virginia Emily Merritt; and a nephew, Jay Merritt.
Graveside services will be Sunday at 1:30 P.M. at Alexander Cemetey, Hebbardsville.No calling hours will be observed. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

RUTH ULBRICH

ATHENS – Ruth Lowry Ulbrich, 85, of Athens, died Monday, May 10, 2004 in Pittsburgh, PA.
Born August 19, 1918 in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Elizabeth Shingler Lowry.
She was a retired secretary from Ohio University and was a member of Alexander Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder and member of the choir.
She is survived by a daughter, Ramona (Alan) Moore of Peoria, IL.; a son Darrell (Susie) Ulbrich of Bridgeville, PA; three grandchildren, Brian Ulbrich, Erin Doman, Andrew Moore; a sister, Marjorie Stright of Athens.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell H. Ulbrich, Sr.; a brother, Gene Lowry.
Services will be Thursday at 11:00 A.M at the Alexander Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ed Brown officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alexander Presbyterian Church, 4343 Hebbardsville Road, Athens, OH 45701, or Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 4700 North University, Peoria, IL 61614 or the Amercan Cancer Society.

FRED LANDIS

ATHENS – Frederick “Freddie” E. Landis, 87, of Athens, died Friday, May 7, 2004 at his home.
Born March 11, 1917 in Athens, he was the son of the late Earl and Sadie Robinson Landis.
He formerly owned and operated Landot Auto Parts and proudly served in the south pacific in the US Army during WWII.
He was a member of the Athens American Legion Post 21, Athens VFW post 3477, and the Chauncey AMVETS post 53.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, seven children, Connie (Bob) Thompson of Athens, Becky (Sandy) Harold of Columbus, Earl (Nancy) Landis of Athens, Maggie (Larry) Thomas of Athens, Judy (Bob) Courtney of Athens, Mary (Tom) Wheatley of Athens, Jim (Linda) Landis of Norfolk, VA; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Jeanette (Stan) Howdyshell of Cuyahoga Falls..
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Services will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens. Burial will be in West Union Street cemetery where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 21 and Athens VFW Post 3477.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday 5 to 8 p.m. Contributions may be made to Appalachian Community Hospice, 30 Herrold Ave, Athens, OH 45701.

John B. (Jack) Heaton

ATHENS – John B. (Jack) Heaton, 92, of Athens, died Friday morning, April 30, 2004 at Kimes Nursing Home, Athens.
Born July 25, 1911, in Superior, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Everett and Jesse Heaton.
He spent most of his working life in the tire industry and was for many years the District Manager in the areas of Michigan and Ohio for Kelly Springfield before finishing his career as owner of a tire store in Detroit, Michigan.
He is survived by his sons, James (Bonnie) Heaton of Export, Pennsylvania and David (Jeanne) Heaton of Athens; grandsons David Heaton of Cary, North Carolina, Geoffrey Heaton of New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, Christopher Heaton of Ann Arbor, Michigan; granddaughters Jeanne Heaton of New York City and Caroline Heaton of Gulf Shores, Alabama; great-grandchildren John, Anna and Emma Heaton of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is also survived by Jeanne (David) Heaton’s daughter Shannon O’Leary of San Francisco and her son, Kevin O’Leary of Davis, California; Bonnie Heaton’s daughters Leah (Ken) McPherson of Greensboro, North Carolina and Courtney (John) Waugh/Critchley of London, Ontario, Canada and by the McPherson’s son, Noah.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Jean Mingis Heaton and Elva Mix Heaton, and his brother Daniel.

Kerry W. DeWeese

ATHENS – Kerry W. DeWeese, 53, of The Plains, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born March 4, 1951 in Athens, he was the son of Murven and Rosalee Metcalf DeWeese of The Plains.
He was a 1970 graduate of Athens High School and employed with Ohio University for over 20 years. He was a member of the Athens Masonic Paramuthia Lodge 25 F and AM and was an avid hunter and bass fisherman, and also an avid Bengal’s and Red’s fan.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy; two sons, Steven DeWeese of Virginia and Joshua DeWeese of Columbus; two sisters, Cathy DeWeese-Wakeland of The Plains and Susan Tudor of Athens; a special niece, Scarlett Tudor of Athens.
Services will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. H. Willard Love officiating. Burial will be at Zion cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4 to 8 PM.

LILLIAN LORENE COOLEY

Lillian Lorene Carpenter Cooley, 89, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born April 18, 1915 in Guysville, she was the daughter of the late Victor O. and Eva Fulton Carpenter.
She was retired from Ohio University and a former employee of Athens City Schools. She was a life long member of Clarks Chapel Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Joy J. Cooley of Hilo, Hawaii, Eva E. (Donald R) Poston of Athens, Patricia H. (Frank) Goebel of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Gary D. (Vicki) Kantner of Athens, Patty J. Kantner (Victor) Cline of Bridgeport, WV, Mark A. (Melodie) Kantner of Albany, Evelyn M. Goebel of Houston, TX, William S. (Barbara) Goebel of Maxwell, New Mexico, Frank E. (Kelly) Goebel, Reno, Nevada, Lillian V. (Mark) Burkey of Littleton, Colorado, Patrick C. (Karen) Goebel of Wooster; eleven great grandchildren, Amie Cline (David) Earnest of Clarksburg, WV, Andrew Cline of Bridgeport, WV, Jessica and Kimberly Kantner of Athens, Brandon Kantner of Athens, Madeline, Emma and Peter Goebel of Wooster, William B. Goebel of Maxwell, New Mexico, Kyle and Jenna Burkey of Littleton, Colorado; a great great granddaughter, Alexis Daria Earnest of Clarksburg, WV; a brother-in-law, Keith Scott of Athens; four nieces and a nephew.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Murphey Cooley; an infant brother; two sisters, Lucille Carpenter Scott, Phyllis Carpenter Cantner.
Services will be Friday at 1:00 P.M. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens. Burial will be in Clarks Chapel cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 6 to 8 P.M.

Nellie C. Sewell

ATHENS – Nellie C. Sewell, 85, of Athens died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
She was born on October 16, 1918 in The Plains. She was the daughter of the late Ira and Hattie Robinette Barnes.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints.
She is survived by a son, Grant Richard (Catherine) Sewell of Lancaster; a daughter, Russlyn “Rusty” (James) Stalder of Athens; four grandchildren, Reena (Paul) Flowers, Kelly (Jeff) Wharton, Rachel (Matt) Frazee and David Stalder and his special friend Lana Lovsey; five great grandchildren; and a sister Iva Posick of Cincinnati.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Russell Sewell, 1974; two brothers, Phillip and William Barnes; five sisters, Lillian Barnes, Opal Leibhart, Myrtle Ball, Alberta Gabriel and Helen Lee.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 PM at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Elder David Mingus officiating. Burial will be at Alexander cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 PM.
