Homer Oyer Shriver
1924 - 2007
Homer Oyer Shriver, age 83, of Crown City (Mercerville Community), died Monday morning July 23, 2007 at Holzer Senior Care Center. Born March 13, 1924 in Guyan Township, Gallia County, he was the son of the late Henry and Grace Barry Shriver. Homer was the last of his family and in addition to his parents; he was preceded by 3 brothers, Ogle, Lawrence and John Shriver, and by 3 sisters, Wilma Sheets, Elizabeth Parsons, and Georgia Church.
Homer was a retired farmer, and he enjoyed hunting, and spending time with family and friends. He attended Victory Baptist Church.

He is survived by several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Thursday July 26, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home with Pastor Gary Warner officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-9 PM.

Phyllis Faye Boggs
1930 - 2007
hyllis Faye Boggs, age 76, of Gallipolis, died Saturday morning July 28, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center. Born September 29, 1930 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Alva and Gladys Green Chapman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Harry Lawrence Boggs, whom she married on December 30, 1951 and he preceded her on June 10, 1973, and by four brothers, Woodrow, Paul, Gerald and Dallas Chapman.
Phyllis retired from Holzer Medical Center where she worked as a Nurses Aide.

She is survived by, one daughter, Janet Boggs of Gallipolis, a niece, Cheryl Chapman of Pt. Pleasant, two nephews, Byron Chapman of Gallipolis, and Donnie Chapman of Charleston, and her special friends, Dorothy, Georgia, Donna and Kim.

Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home on Monday from 5-8 PM. Burial will be on Tuesday in Mound Hill cemetery, and will be private.

Ruth L. Carter
1932 - 2007
Ruth was a homemaker, and a wonderful wife and mother. She also worked as office manager for many years in her husbands plumbing business.
She is survived by:

Husband: Donald 'Don' Carter who she married on June 17, 1951 in El Paso, Texas.
Three Daughters: Debbie Evans of Westerville
Yvette (Frank) Dantonio of Westerville
Robin (Michael) Saum of Bidwell
Four Grandchildren: Ross and Katelyn Dantonio, and, Jared and Annie Saum.
A Sister: Linda Hensley of Gallipolis
A Brother: Robert Wood of Canal Winchester
Numerous brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM. Friday August 10, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home, with Rev. John Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holzer Hospice 100 Jackson Pike Gallipolis, Ohio 45631.

Timothy Tim Lawhon
1949 - 2007
Timothy L. 'Tim' Lawhon, age 58, of Gallipolis, died Thursday, August 9, 2007 at St. Mary's medical Center in Huntington. Born March 23, 1949 in Logan, Ohio. He was the son of the late Herman Lawhon, and Margree Locke Lawhon of Gallipolis.
In addition to his mother, Tim is survived by his wife, Regina K. 'Jeanie' Williams Lawhon, who he married on September 1, 1984. Five Children, Jennifer (Dean) McDonald, Heather (Curtis) Casto, Jari K. Smith, and Bethany Lawhon (Travis Wamsley) all of Gallipolis, and Eric (Paula) Clary of North Carolina. Six Grandchildren, Nicholas Watson, Jessica Halley, Elijah Smith, Michaela and Wyatt Clary, and Mackenzi McDonald. Two Brothers, Marc (Deb) Lawhon of Gallipolis, and Larry (Molly) Lawhon of North Carolina. Several Nieces and Nephews, and many, many friends.

Tim was a 1967 graduate of Kyger Creek High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and was Honorable discharged after 4 years of service. He was a boiler operator for Century Aluminum where he had worked for over 34 years. He was an active member and Past Exalted Ruler of Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107, and was also an active member of VFW Post #4464.

Tim lived a very full life, and he took every opportunity to help and be of service to others, whether it was his country, his family, his job or his friends, he was always there and never expected anything in return. This extended even after death, by Tim being an organ donor; he could do a final act of service to help others.

He touched so many lives in his short time here; he will be deeply missed by his family as well as everyone who knew him.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM. Tuesday August 14, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home, with Pastor Larry Fisher officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Hope at Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 12:00 - 2:00 PM. and 5:00 - 8:00 PM.

In keeping with the families wishes the casket will be closed.

Elks Memorial Services will be conducted at 8:00 PM. Monday at the funeral home. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Service Detail.

Immediately following the committal service at the cemetery, everyone is invited to a time of food and fellowship upstairs, at the Gallipolis Elks Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

James Ray Davis
1921 - 2007
James Ray Davis, age 86, of Jackson and formerly of Gallipolis, died Saturday August 11, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. Born February 10, 1921 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late John and Alma Drummond Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife, Edith Jane Jones Davis who he married on May 16, 1942 in Gallia County and who preceded him on January 30, 2003, a daughter, Mary Annette Davis, and two brothers, Beldon and Richard Davis.
Mr. Davis was a World War II Navy Veteran. A former schoolteacher, he taught in the Gallia and Pickaway County Schools, he was also a former employee of the atomic plant, and at the time of his retirement, he was the custodian of the First Baptist Church in Circleville. He was a member of Centenary Methodist Church, and the Gallia County Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by:

Wendell Davis of Mudsoc
Four Grandchildren: Jennifer (Walter) Lewis of Williamsport, David (Willa) Bowman of Jackson, Jeremy Davis of Jackson, and Jamie (Stacy) Davis of Cadmus, three Great Granddaughters, and two Great Grandsons, several nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Wednesday August 15, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home 810 2nd. Ave. Gallipolis with Tom Dishong officiating. Burial will follow in Neal cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-8 PM. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.

Lailah Promyse Diamyn Herd
2007 - 2007
Lailah Promyse Diamyn Herd, infant daughter of Javon Anthony Herd and Kristen Anderson of Gallipolis, died Thursday August 16, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center. In addition to her parents, she is survived by, Grandparents, Tammie and Roy Loel of Gallipolis, 4 Uncles, Greg Jones, Zachariah Lewis I, Timmy Schmidt, and Aaron Loel all of Gallipolis, 1 Aunt, Alisha Loel of Gallipolis, and 3 Cousins, Promyse Lewis, Zachariah Lewis II, and Zamara Borden all of Gallipolis.
Graveside services will be 1:00 PM. Wednesday August 22, 2007 at Centenary cemetery.

Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home is assisting the family.

John Henry Holcomb
1921 - 2007
John Henry Holcomb, age 85, of La Fayette, Georgia and formerly of Gallia County, died Tuesday evening August 21, 2007 at his residence. Born September 15, 1921 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late Elmer and Myrtle Shaw Holcomb. In addition to his parents he was preceded by two brothers, Clyde and Wesley Holcomb.
John was a World War II Army Veteran, having served in the Company C, 169th Engineer (combat) Battallion.

He was a 50 year member of the Operating Engineers, and retired from the Dravo Corp. of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Patriot Masonic Lodge, where he had received his 50 year pin.

John is survived by, his wife Barbara 'Bobbie' Wheeler Holcomb of La Fayette, a son, James Holcomb of Columbus, one brother, Lee Holcomb of Gallipolis, two sisters, Lillian Saunders and Annabelle Caldwell both of Gallipolis and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM. Saturday August 25, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home. Burial will follow in Providence cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5-8 PM.

Masonic services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 8:00 PM by Patriot Masonic Lodge.

Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans funeral Detail.

Betty Jane France
1933 - 2007
Betty Jane France, age 74, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday morning August 22, 2007 at her residence. Born July 4, 1933 in Gallipolis, she was the oldest of three children born to the late John Robert and Margaret E. Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by two husbands, Logan B. France and Fred L. Watson, by three daughters, Dianna, Carol and Caroline France, and by two brothers, Richard and John Mitchell.
Betty was a retired employee of Federal Mogul Corp. and a member of Paint Creek Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Tony Watson of Gallipolis, two step daughters, Sheila Watson and Tina Hollaway both of Chicago, five grandchildren, Denise France, with whom she made her home, Katlyn, Rhianna, Alexis, Mary Elizabeth Watson all of Gallipolis, two great grandchildren, Shaquellia and Dante Lewis of Gallipolis, two nephews, Johnny Mitchell of California and Danny Mitchell of Gallipolis, and her special friends, Charles Lewis, Helen Watson (Peaches), Leslie and Teresa Combs all of Gallipolis.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Monday August 28, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Rev. Arius Hurt and Rev. Calvin Minnis officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Street cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 12:00 PM. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be: Jimmy Mitchell, Darrell Canaday, James Griffin, Josh Williams, Samuel Morris II, and Charles Lewis III

Alene Hampton Howard
1939 - 2007
Alene Hampton Howard, age 68, of Bidwell, died Friday September 7, 2007 at her residence. Born April 25, 1939 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of the late Boyd and Anna Maude Parsons Hampton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Ronald Howard in 2006, and by a brother, Boyd Hampton Jr. in 1957.
Alene was a 1958 graduate of Waterloo High School, and a homemaker.

She is survived by:

3 Children: Barbara (John) Buck of Garden City, MI.
Randy Howard and Reed (Tracy) Howard both of Westland, MI.
5 Grandchildren
1 Brother: (Her twin) Allen (Dorothy) Hampton of Stockbridge, MI.
3 Sisters: Betty Stewart Burchett of Gallipolis
Janet (Tuck) Carter of Bidwell
Rebecca Straight of Bidwell

Services were held at the convenience of the family.

Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Willard 'Pete' Call
1912 - 2007
Willard d. 'Pete' Call, age 94, of Rio Grande, Ohio, died Tuesday evening September 18, 2007 at his home. Born November 1, 1912 in Adamsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Bert L. Call and Cora Jane Day Call. In 1934, he married Bess W. Richards call who preceded him December 10, 2001.

He was a self-employed farmer all his life; he also worked for and retired from the Rio Grande water Dept. after 20 years of service. He also served on the Raccoon Township school Board for 8 years.

Surviving are his Daughter, Jane Ann Zeh of Lake Forest, Illinois, Son Lowell 'Buzz' (Betty) Call of Gallipolis, 9 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren, 1 Step great Grandchild, 1 Great Great grandchild, and a Sister, Imogene McGlothin of Gallipolis.

In addition to his Parents and his Wife, he was preceded by a Daughter, Kathleen Nelson, a Grandson, Steven Nelson, Son in law, William Zeh, an Infant daughter, 2 Brothers, Del and Clyde Call, and 2 Sisters, Irene Mustar and Iileen Peters.

Services will be 11:00 AM. Saturday September 22, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Joseph L. Godwin and Pastor Phil Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery in Rio Grande. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 PM.

Grandsons and Great Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.

He is gone from this earth, but will live forever in our thoughts and deeds and mostly in our hearts.

Aurilla "Peaches" McWhorter
1910 - 2007
Aurilla McWhorter of Springfield, OH.
Aurilla McWhorter affectionately known as 'Peaches' was born the (2nd ) child of the late William Williams and Hattie Banks Williams on August 27, 1910 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

'Peaches' died at home on September 29, 2007. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by three daughters, Phyllis English, Helen Anderson, and Donna L. Collins, three husbands, Alonzo Armstrong, Elmer King, and Dewitt McWhorter, a brother, Clarence Williams, and a sister, Helen Porter.

'Peaches' was a charter member of the Triedstone Baptist Church in Gallipolis and a member of the choir.

'Peaches' leaves to cherish her loving and unforgettable memory, her devoted children, Alonzo (Frances) Armstrong, William (Kathy) Armstrong, and Hattie Reed along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and two sisters in law, Pearl King Scott, and Bernice King.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Wednesday October 3, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home, with Rev. Gene Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Street cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 AM. Until the time of service.

She fought a good fight, she has finished her course, she has kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness.
