Juanita M. Fife, age 66, of Gallipolis, died Saturday February 17, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center. She was born on January 25, 1941 in Mason County, WV to the late Elbert and Grace M. Roush Brooks. She is also preceded by a sister Jean Long. She was a former employee of A&P Grocery Store.

Hazel Jane Edgington
1917 - 2007
Hazel Jane Edgington, age 89, of Gallipolis, died Tuesday evening February 20, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center. Born December 20, 1917 in Manchester, Ohio she was the daughter of the late William and Blanche Scott Henderson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband Edson D. Edgington, who she married on December 13, 1935 and who preceded her on June 4, 1979, also preceding her is a sister, Beatrice Woodman.

Hazel was a retired employee of Thomas Clothiers, retiring after 33 years of service. She was an over 50 year member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grace Guild, and the Abigail Circle. She was also active for many years in Bridge Club, and was a former member of the Garden Club.

She is survived by:

Aljean Starr Thivener
(December 16, 1924 - November 30, 2012)

Aljean Starr Tyler Thivener. Age 87, of Gallipolis passed away Friday evening November 30, 2012 at Ohio Valley Health Care, in Parkersburg, WV, where she had been a resident for the last 3 years. Aljean was loved by the staff and residents and enjoyed her craft of necklace making and giving them to the staff & residents. She will always be known for her great sense of humor, quick wit and her kindness and giving heart. She was a dedicated Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt & friend. Aljean was known for her hard work, giving spirit and love for her family and friends. Family was very important to her. She will be missed terribly here on earth but will have a Heavenly Grand reunion with her loved ones that have gone on.

Aljean retired from the Ohio River Company ( Ingram Barge Line) with 15 years of service as a cook and she was the manager for 20+ years for One Hour/Duke Cleaners in Gallipolis.

She was born December 16, 1924 in Gallipolis, the daughter of the late Lyburn & Alice Gaskins Tyler In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil G. Charles 'Foxy' M. Grant
(December 31, 1925 - February 5, 2013)

U.S. Veteran
Charles Morris (Foxy) Grant, Jr., age 87 of Gallipolis, OH, passed away on February 5, 2013. He was born on December 31, 1925 in Monaville, West Virginia, the son of the late Bishop Charles M. Grant, Sr. and Florence Edna Lee Grant Casey, who both preceded him in death.

He accepted Christ as his Savior at age 12 under the leadership of his Great Grandfather, Rev. Thomas Jefferson Jones, in Independence, Virginia. He later attended the Paint Creek Baptist Church in Gallipolis, OH.

Mr. Grant attended grade school in Gallipolis, OH and Virginia and completed middle school in Chillicothe, OH. He graduated from Gallia Academy High School. On Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953, he married Gladys D. Keels at New Hope Baptist Church, Harrisburg, OH.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served in the 140th Port Company at Camp McKay in Boston, Massachusetts and was also a Technician 5th Grade, Longshoreman, at Staten Island, New York.

Mr. Grant worked for the Gallipolis City Schools in the maintenance department and later as a Custodian at Gallia Academy High School and Washington Elementary. He retired as a Stationary Engineer/Licensed Boiler Operator and Substitute Bus Driver after 31 years of service to the school district.

Mr. Grant enjoyed many years of active community service including coach of the Babe Ruth and Pony League championship teams, Gallia-Meigs Community Action Agency Board of Directors-11 years, Gallia County Rehabilitation Housing Commission Board of Directors, Captain/Director of Communications for Gallia County Civil Defense during recovery operations for Silver Bridge Disaster, leader for Boy Scouts Flying Eagles-4 years, and past president of the Gallia County CB Club.

He was a 42 year member of the Kiwanis Club of Gallipolis and served as President five times, distinguished President several times and was currently serving as Vice President. He was a Distinguished Lt. Governor of the Ninth Division of the Ohio District in 1995-96. The recipient of a Hixson Fellow Award in 1996, he also served on the Kiwanis International Board as Sargent of Arms, 3 years on the Election Board Committee, and 3 years as a judge at the Ohio District Key Club Conventions. He and his wife attended many Kiwanis Division Council meetings, Ohio District Conventions and International Conventions.

Mr. Grant served on the Board of the Ohio Association of Classified Public School Employees (OAPSE) for 2 years. He was a past State President of OAPSE and presided over a membership of 30,000 members. Mr. Grant was named the Outstanding Plant Operator of the Year for OAPSE in 1969-70. He helped to organize OAPSE in the Gallia County Schools.

The U.S. Congress, Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate recognized Mr. Grant’s civic and professional accomplishments many times and presented him with Resolutions of Commendation to honor him.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed The Ohio State University football and basketball teams. Mr. Grant loved all sports including bowling, golf, softball, baseball, boxing and marbles. He was a charter member of the Cliffside Golf Club and received the honor of hitting a “hole in one” on July 18, 2001 (Hole #15, 191 yards, 4-wood). Mr. Grant won numerous golf tournaments and was especially proud of winning the River Cup Championship in 1990. In his early years, he was an 8th grade Champion of Marbles in Chillicothe, OH, and won 3 amateur and one professional boxing round in the Gallipolis area.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gladys D. Grant, sisters Anna Cordell, Cleveland, OH; Lelia (Clarence) Jackson, Gallipolis, OH; brothers Elder Larry (Diane) Grant, Chillicothe, OH; Michael (Roxy) Casey, Columbus, OH, William (Carolyn) Casey, Gallipolis, OH; and Robert Casey, Gallipolis, OH; brother and sister-in laws James D. (Dorothy) Keels, Rio Grande, OH; Lloyd Keels, Cincinnati, OH, Russell (Nannette) Keels, Bidwell, OH, Raymond Howell, Las Vegas, NV; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Calling hours will be Friday, February 8, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Waugh- Halley-Wood Funeral Home.

Funeral services, celebrating his life, will be held at Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013 with Rev. Gene Armstrong and Rev. Harry Scott officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. There will be military services at the graveside by volunteers of area veteran’s lodges.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Nolfi, Ed Caudill, Ron Sexton, Dr. Rodney Stout, Neal Collins, Michael Casey, James D. Keels, Jr. and Larry Boyer. Honorary pallbearers will be James D. Keels, Lloyd Keels, Russell Keels, Raymond Howell, Rod Gordon, Elder Larry Grant, William Casey, and Robert Casey.

Carla L. McBrayer
(October 8, 1968 - February 5, 2013)

Carla L. McBrayer, age 44, of Gallipolis, died February 5, 2013 at her residence. Born on October 8, 1968 in Gallipolis. She the daughter of the late James and Rose Lee Lear Holley. She was a homemaker and attended Calvary Christian Church. She is survived by her husband Charles A. McBrayer of Gallipolis; step-mother Anita Holley of Evergreen, Ohio; 3 children Dakota James Case of Lancaster, OH; Joushua Montana Case of Wellston, OH; Cecelia Elizabeth Cheyenne Case of Gallipolis; 2 grandchildren Justin Case and Leah Sherrick; niece Natasha Holley of Houston, TX; nephew Jacob Holley of Houston, TX; uncle Freddie (Bea) Stover of Gallipolis; 2 aunts Virginia Stroop of; Circleville, OH; Linda Lear of Bidwell, OH; and several additional family members. Garnet R. Hess
(January 8, 1929 - February 14, 2013)

Garnet R. Hess, age 84, of Gallipolis, Ohio departed this life on Thursday February 14, 2013 at the Holzer Assisted Living Community. Born January 8, 1929 in Queen Shoals, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late, Fred M. and Belva Bodkins Engle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband of 36 years, Lloyd R. Hess in 1984. Garnet is survived by 4 daughters, Rosetta Moore, and her children, David and Lori Moore of Sandyville, WV, Brenda Moore and Darrell Withrow of Sandyville. Carolyn and Charles Cox and their children, Amy and Colin McKean of Gallipolis, Kelly and Dwayne Beaver of Gallipolis, and Brad Cox and April Good of Lancaster. Jo Ann McDonald, age 77, of Gallipolis, died Friday morning February 22, 2013 at Holzer Medical Center. Born February 25, 1935 in Pt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of the late Ernest L. and Elizabeth Pearson Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Charles McDonald, by a grandson, Jeremy Bright, by 3 brothers, William Blain Hill, John D. Hill, and Ernest Hill Jr. and by a sister, Ella Florence Hill. Jo Ann was retired, and a member of the Ladies of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary in Pt. Pleasant, and the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by, 8 Children, James Lewis (Martha) Bright of Marion, Ernest Bright of Maryland, Robert Bright of Arizona, Paul Ray Bright of Gallipolis, Sandra Gilland of Coco Beach, FL., Mike (Jill) Putney of Gallipolis, Charles McDonald of Coco Beach, FL., and Richard Dean McDonald of Thurman. 15 Grandchildren, and 18 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. 6 Sisters, Sally Wears of Gallipolis, Mary Jones of Terra Haute, IN., Shirley Byus of Pt. Virginia M. Saunders

Virginia M. Saunders, age 86, of Bidwell, died Friday morning March 1, 2013 at Holzer Medical Center. Born November 1, 1926 in Gallia County. She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Flossie Pinkerman Gothard. In addition to her parents, Virgina was preceded by a son, Robert Saunders, and by 2 brothers, Marshall and James G. Gothard. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bill Saunders. 2 children, Verdonna Slaughter of Grove City, and David Saunders of Grove City. 5 grandchildren, Niki (Matt) Brittain, Bobbi Jo Saunders, Stephenie (Jessie) Willis, Luke Saunders, and Kennison Saunders. 4 great grandchildren, Cameron Willis, Elijah Willis, Eden Willis and Ben Brittain. Helen Mae Sheets

Helen Mae Sheets, age 95, of the Mercerville Community, ‘Went to be with her Lord’ Wednesday morning March 13, 2013 at her home. Born November 8, 1917 in Bladen, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mora Braley Walters. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded by her husband, Leslie Howard Sheets, a daughter, Vonda McGuire, 3 grandchildren, Mike Watson, Mark Watson and an infant granddaughter, Jean Ann Watson, 2 brothers, Oakley Walters and Kenneth Walters, and by 2 sisters, Lucille Lemon Brown, and Marguerite Gothard Johnson. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She retired from the Gallia County Local Schools where she worked for many years as a cook. She also assisted her husband in the operation of their family farm. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She is survived by, 3 daughters, Doris (Jerry) Haffelt of Gallipolis, Phyllis Jean (John) Lane of Gallipolis, and Debby (Terry) O’Dell of Crown City. 8 grandchildren, Teresa (Bill) Lee, Diane (Monte) Sheets, Brad (Crystal) Watson, Mark Lane, Chuck (Tammy) Lane, Keith (Pam) McGuire, Kevin (Jessica) McGuire, and Karen (Bill) Moore. 17 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren, a sister, Nellie Waugh of Gallipolis, a special sister in law, Pauline Moore of Gallipolis. George Edward Woodward Sr.
(December 31, 1928 - March 13, 2013)

George Edward Woodward Sr., 84, of Gallipolis,’ went to be with the Lord’ on Wednesday March 13, 2013 at the Gulf Cost Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL. George was born on December 31, 1928 in Gallia County, the son of the late Tom Fox and Sallie Estelle Sawyers Woodward. A native of Gallipolis, Ohio, George graduated from Gallia Academy in 1946. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Patriot Masonic Lodge and the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. He comes from a long line of riverboat captains extending all the way back to his great-grandfather, Asa Woodward. George has been a member of the Grace United Methodist Church since childhood. He was also a former member of the Green Local School Board. George was active in farming and the Gallia County Cattlemen's Association, as well as being awarded one of the Farm Families of the Century. His hobbies were farming, fishing, gardening, painting, wood carving, and music. George was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Jeanne Davis, and his great-granddaughter, Zoe Elizabeth Woodward. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 61 years, Nona L. Henderson Woodward, his six children: Robert L. (Jane) Woodward of Gallipolis, Katie (Richard) Maciag of Fort Myers, FL., George E. (Becky) Woodward Jr. of Pt. Pleasant, Gregory Scott Woodward of Gallipolis, Daniel F. (Sheri) Woodward of Gallipolis, and Nona Kimberly (Jeff) Canaday of Gallipolis. his grandchildren, Robert (Megan), George III, Seth, and Olivia Woodward, Kimberly Hatcher, Jessica (David) Mills, Angela Steger, and Travis Frasher, and his great-grandchildren Colton Eryk, Brooke, Colton Wyatt, and Savannah Kate, his brother, Tom Woodward, and many nieces and nephews. Rhoda R. Briggs
(January 6, 1916 - March 15, 2013)

Rhoda R. Briggs, 97, of 938 First Avenue, Gallipolis, passed away on March 15, 2013 at her home. Born January 6, 1916, in Harrison Twp, Gallia County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lenora Porter McKean. Rhoda was a cosmetologist and later worked and retired from the Gallipolis Developmental Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill Briggs, son David Briggs, her sisters, Jewel (Elmer) Caldwell, Rita (Merrill) Sheets, her brothers, Porter (Gladys) McKean, Marcus (Genie) McKean, John (Garnet) McKean, and Stanley (Roberta) McKean, and brother in law, Robert Haggerty. Surviving are her sisters, Lucille Haggerty of Gallipolis, Ohio and G. Juanita (C. Leon) Saunders of Gallipolis, Ohio. She is also survived by her daughter in law, Betty Briggs of San Diego, California. She is survived by two granddaughters along with several nieces and nephews. Rhoda was blessed by her dedicated, skilled and loving caregivers lead by Darren “Gary” Reddy and Angel Kirk. A private family service will be held at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home on Monday, March 18, 2013 with Dr. Fred Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill cemetery. Judith A. 'Judy' Wright

Judith A. “Judy” Wright, age 72, of Crown City, passed away Tuesday March 19, 2013 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WV. Born April 14, 1940 in Ashville, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Glenn A. “Dutch” and Freda Strawser Goldsberry. Judy was a homemaker and a former mail carrier. She was a member of the Crown City Community Church. She was also a member of the Crown City Community Church Ladies Group and the District 2 Fire Department Auxiliary. Dr. Alan R. Dean, age 72, of Rio Grande, died Friday morning March 22, 2013 at his home. In keeping with his wishes, no services are being planned. Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Wendell Sowards
Born: November 24, 1984
Died: September 14, 2014

Wendell Sowards age 29, of Merritt Island, FL. and formerly of Gallipolis, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 14th, 2014.
Born November 24, 1984 in Batesville, Indiana, Wendell was a truck driver and loved to spend time fishing.
He is survived by his loving family; father Martin Sowards, mother Amenda Sowards, three beautiful children, Martin Jr., Morgan Destiny Nicole, and Ronan Sowards, a brother Dustin and sister-in- law Krista and nephew Killian. He has two surviving grandparents Lois Kaloust and Jacqueline Wills. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday September 20th, 2014 at the Waugh- Halley-Wood Funeral Home between 2pm and 4 pm.

Welthia May Persinger
Born: October 22, 1921
Died: September 25, 2014

Welthia May Persinger, age 92, of Brooksville, Florida and formerly of Gallipolis, died Thursday evening September 25, 2014 at the Bayfront Health Brooksville. Born October 22, 1921 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Pleasant R. and Jesta C. Saunders Houck. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Gerald F. ‘Jerry’ Persinger, by 3 brothers, 3 sisters, 2 siblings who died in infancy and by 3 nephews and 1 niece.
She was a graduate of Mercerville High School. She was a former Psychiatric Aid at the Gallipolis State Institute, and later moved to Columbus where she worked and retired from the Columbus State Hospital. She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary Chapter 6065 in Columbus.
She is survived by 1 brother, James Lee ‘Jim’ (Darlene) Houck of Grove City, 3 nieces, Barbara (Gene) Harbour of Brooksville, Florida with whom she made her home for 13 years, Melody (Mark) Weinheimer of Columbus, and Ruth Buchanan of Granville, and by 1 nephew, Richard Houck of Gallipolis.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Tuesday September 30, 2014 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Lusher officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday 1 hour prior to services.
