Kathryn Elizabeth (Betty Gruver) Thomas
(1923 - 2008)

OCALA, Fla. - Kathryn Elizabeth (Betty Gruver) Thomas, 85, of Ocala, died Friday evening, Aug. 22, 2008, at Palm Gardens of Ocala, after a lengthy battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Born March 10, 1923, at Warsaw, Ind., she was the youngest child of Helen Eliza (Ramey) and Floyd Abraham Gruver.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Lee (and husband, George) Sarres of Ocala; a sister - in - law, Ruby Gruver of Edgerton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Donald, John and Paul; and a sister, Helen.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Maple Grove cemetery, Edgerton, with Pastor Rick Barnett to officiate. There will be no visitation.
Krill Funeral Service, Edgerton, is in charge of arrangements.

Forrest D. Hall
(1912 - 2008)

Forest D. Hall, 95, died Monday, August 25, 2008, at his home near Bryan surrounded by his family.
He was born on October 11, 1912, near Jewell, the son of Melvin and Alice (Rath) Hall, the last of four children - Manard, Everett and Beulah. He grew up a busy farm boy, but still found time to drive his dad's Buick over to the Bryan area to court his girlfriend and future wife, Ruby Hageman. The two were married in the St. Paul's Methodist Church Parsonage in Defiance on June 12, 1934, where the two remained active members for the next 60 years. He and Ruby had a daughter - Janice Kay - born in 1948.
'Hallie, ' as he became known to his closest friends, worked at numerous places after he and Ruby married , starting at Swift's Plating Company and Electrilite, before starting as a volunteer fireman with the Defiance Fire Department. He worked his way up to Assistant Chief, saving many lives along the way and delivering a baby as well, one of which was even named after him. He also taught fire schools in the surrounding area, as well as inventing and patenting a water shield for use in fire containment.
He retired February 1, 1971, and that summer began building a house beside his daughter and her family, on Ruby's family's farm near Bryan, where he returned to farming for 10 years. After that time, he turned his attention to hunting and fishing, gardening and traveling to many states with Ruby. They even celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a trip to Hawaii.
Surviving are his wife of 74 years, Ruby; daughter Janice (Denny) Caryer of Bryan; grandson Cory (Julie) Baden of Defiance; granddaughter, Amy Guza of Bozeman, Montana; five great-granddaughters as well as stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Defiance with Pastor Mark Shimer, with viewing from 10 - 11 a.m. Visitation will also be from 2 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mast - Mock - Hoffman - Hanenkrath - Clevenger - Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance.
Preferred memorials are to CHWC - Hospice or to a donation of your choice.

Mary Elizabeth Monson
(1915 - 2008)

Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Monson, 92, died Sunday morning, Aug. 24, 2008, at Hillside Country Living, Bryan. Born Nov. 1, 1915, in rural Jackson Township near Richwood, to Vesta and Walter H. Davis, she married Merrit Monson and he preceded her in death.
A graduate of Richwood High School and Ohio Northern University, she was a first grade teacher for three years.
After her marriage, she and her husband farmed near Richwood. In their later years, they spent winters in Haines City, Fla. Surviving are daughters, Bettie Finken of Bryan and June (and husband, Jerry) Boyd of Fort Smith, Ark.; four grandchildren, Tami Roushia of Bryan, Jill (Shane) Roughley of Fort Smith, Ark., Julie Boyd of Black Mountain, N.C. and Jeff (and wife, Keri) Boyd of Springdale, Ark.; and six great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Elizabeth Roushia, Tyler Merrit Roushia, Andrew Jarret Roughley, Lauren Alaine Roughley, Caroline Ashby Boyd and Carlee Elizabeth Boyd.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth (Davis) Giffin; and her brother, Blake Davis.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. in the Stofcheck - Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Rush Creek (Essex) United Methodist Church, 32697 Ohio 37, Richwood, OH 43344.

Dorothy L. Werder
(1940 - 2008)

HICKSVILLE - Dorothy L. Werder, 68, of Hicksville, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at her home. Born July 20, 1940, at Defiance County, to Lillian (Studer) and Harold Burns, she married DeVonn Werder on July 2, 1960, at St. Michael's Church, Blakeslee, and he survives.
A 1958 graduate of Montpelier High School and a 1984 graduate of International Business College, she worked as a legal secretary with Clemens & Kohrn Law Office, Defiance; with The Hicksville Bank as an auditor; and as a receptionist at ExperTax - Hicksville.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Hicksville and its Rosary Altar Society, the Red Hat Society, Social Club, Hicksville Bowling Association, and the Hicksville Ladies Golf Association, and was a former member of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Denise (and husband, Vince) Sutter of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a granddaughter, Lindsey Michelle Sutter of Fort Wayne; a sister, Mary (Jerry) Houck of Bryan; and a sister - in - law, Barb Burns of Findlay.
She was preceded in death by a son, DeVonn; her parents; and a brother, Howard Burns.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 - 8 p.m. with a rosary service at 8 p.m. at the Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville.
Funeral mass will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, with the Rev. Father Tom Oedy to officiate.
Burial will be at Forest Home cemetery, Hicksville.
Memorials may be made to Community Health Professionals/Hospice - Defiance.

Vernon L. Kimpel
(1919 - 2008)

EDGERTON - Vernon L. Kimpel, 88, of Edgerton, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Park View Nursing Center, Edgerton, where he was a resident.
Born Sept. 14, 1919, in Farmer Township, Defiance County, to Glatus (Upp) and Edward Kimpel, he married Ruth M. Imm on Oct. 4, 1947, at Edgerton, and she survives.
A veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the Asia - Pacific Theater, he was a service technician in plumbing and heating for more than 50 years with the Edgerton Hardware.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Edgerton, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1494 and John D. Smith Post No. 10, Edgerton American Legion of which he was past commander.
Mr. Kimpel also served as member of the Edgerton Board of Public Affairs and on the Edgerton Village Council, of which he served as president.
He was named Edgerton's Citizen of the Year in 1996.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Jayne (and husband, Steven) Stuckey of Marion, Ind., H. Elaine (Edward) Vetter of Lexington, S.C., Carolyn (William) Shininger of Fort Wayne, Ind., Marlene (Patrick) Oxender of Montpelier and Jeanette (Jim) Demlow of Florence, S.C.; five sons, Ed (and wife, Sue) Kimpel of Edgerton, Don (Karrie) Kimpel of Edgerton, Darrell (Becky) Kimpel of Hicksville, Lee (Andrea) Kimpel of Lexington, S.C., and Steven Kimpel of Edgerton; a son - in - law, Jim Meyer of Hicksville; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois James of Hicksville; and a brother, Kenneth Kimpel of Hicksville.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Meyer; eight brothers, Ivan, Lavon, Melvin, Forrest, Gordon, Russell, Clair and Floyd; a sister, Maxine Wilson; two half brothers, Glen Kimpel and Paul Miller; and a half sister, Etho McKee. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 - 5 and 6 - 8 p.m. with a scripture service to be conducted at 8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, with the Rev. Father Stephen Schroeder to officiate. Interment will follow in St. Mary's cemetery, Edgerton, with graveside military rites conducted by John D. Smith Post No. 10 of the Edgerton American Legion.
Memorials may be made to Community Pregnancy Center of Bryan or St. Mary's School.

Marion E. Gilbert
(1927 - 2008)

Marion E. Gilbert, 81, of Bryan, died Saturday evening, Aug. 23, 2008, at his residence.
Born March 3, 1927, at Williams County, to Edith (Calvin) and John Gilbert, he married Shirley G. Miller on July 19, 1953, at Bryan, and she survives.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was employed as a service manager at the Ohio Gas Company in Bryan for 38 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Bryan, and had served as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Bryan for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Kim W. (and wife, Linda) Gilbert of Kokomo, Ind.; two grandsons, Clark Gilbert of Columbus, Ind., and Kyle Gilbert of Lafayette, Ind.; two brothers, John Gilbert of Bryan and Marvin Gilbert; two sisters, Bonnie (and husband, Richard) Wolff of Montpelier and Dorothy Snow of Montpelier; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and a brother, Maurice Gilbert, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 - 11 a.m. in the Burr Funeral Home & Crematory, Bryan.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 11:15 a.m. at Shiffler cemetery near Pulaski with Pastor Richard Franks to officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church or Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers Hospice.

Juanita M. Kutzley
(1906 - 2008)

NAPOLEON - Juanita M. Kutzley, 102, of Napoleon died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at the Northcrest Golden Living Center Nursing Home.
Born July 1, 1906, in Melbern to Flossie (Bradford) and Herold Graetz, she was married to Clarence Kutzley and her preceded her in death in 1976.
Surviving are her daughter, Bonnie (and husband Ralph) Vance of Wauseon; and granddaughter, Lisa Vance of Napoleon. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents and husband were her brothers, Bernard Graetz and Donald Graetz; and grandson, Tracey Vance.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., with a wake service at 3:30 p.m., at Walker Mortuary in Napoleon.
Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Dan Borgelt and Father Robert Dendinger, co - celebrants. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Edgerton, following a luncheon at the St. Augustine Church Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Augustine Catholic School, the Golden Living Center Northcrest Nursing Home, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Joyce Anne Russell
(1940 - 2008)

DEFIANCE - Joyce Anne Russell, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at her home.
Born Aug, 22, 1940, in Payne to Marjorie K. (Wells) and Harry H. Chester, she was married to Rex Russell on June 28, 1958, and he survives. A 1958 graduate of Payne High School, she was employed by Allied Molded Products in Bryan for 24 years. She was previously employed as a hostess and cashier at Vagabond Village Restaurant and at the former Holiday Inn in Defiance as a waitress. She was also a member of the Paulding County Rabbit Breeders Association.
Surviving in addition to her husband are sons, Rex A. (and wife Lisa) Russell of Harrision, Ohio, Charles (Alex) Russell of Holgate, Scott (Cheryl) Russell of Defiance, Darren Russell of Defiance, and Bruce (Penny) Russell of Paulding; daughter, Kathy J. Russell Hogan of Sherwood; sister, Jean (Kenneth) Shininger of Defiance; and 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Jim Stinehelfer Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Hedges cemetery in Paulding.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Paulding County Hospital Home Health Care.

Margaret M. Shiple
(1927 - 2008)

EDGERTON - Margaret M. Shiple, 80, of Edgerton, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, after a brief illness.
Born Oct. 26, 1927, at Toledo, to Cecilia E. (Schneider) and Peter L. Gaiffe, she married James J. Shiple on Feb. 15, 1947, at Toledo, and he survives.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School, Toledo, her early working career included employment at Tol - edo Trust, Toledo Scale and with her husband at the Edgerton Hardware when they moved to Edgerton.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James M. (and wife, Paula) Shiple and Joseph Shiple, both of Edgerton; two grandchildren, Philip (Rachelle) Shiple of Antwerp and Stephanie (and husband, Chad) Everetts of Edgerton; two stepgrandchildren, Jeff (Heather) Gruver of Edgerton and Amy Gruver of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Corey and Casey Everetts, Dana Conley and Connar Shiple; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Rachel, Catie and Adam Gruver.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Joseph Gaiffe.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, with Father Steven Schroeder to officiate. Interment in St. Mary's cemetery will be private. There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's School or Church or to Dream Haven in Edgerton.

Myrtle D. Cooley
(1906 - 2008)

EVANSPORT - Myrtle D. Cooley, 101, died Monday evening, Aug. 18, 2008, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice. Born Sept. 19, 1906, at Hot Springs, Ark., to Gussie (Henderson) and Elijah Deaton, she married Willard Cooley on Dec. 31, 1943, and he preceded her in death in 1983.
She was a member of the Evansport United Methodist Church.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wanita Rowe, and three brothers, Olin, Wilbur and Orville.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 - 6 p.m. in the Grisier Funeral Home, Stryker.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Debbie Kalor to officiate. Interment will follow in the Evansport cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Evansport United Methodist Church or Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
