Clara Middleton
(1917 - 2007)

WATERVILLE - Clara I. Middleton, 89, formerly of Bryan and Edgerton, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Waterville.
Born June 9, 1917, at Mountain Grove, Mo., to Samantha (Hill) and James Bradshaw, she married Forest Middleton on Dec. 23, 1933, at Mountain Grove, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1971.
A seamstress with the former K & R Cleaners and a cook with Lester's Diner in Bryan, she attended the Edgerton Church of Christ and was a member of the Willow Springs Freewill Baptist Church at Mountain Grove.
Surviving are a son, Jerry (and wife, Bonnie) Middleton of Bryan; a daughter, Patricia Penrod of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, John (Kim) Paine Jr. of Bryan, Kendra Fisher of Bryan, Jeff (Angie) Paine of Bryan, Mrs. Christopher (Tonya M.) Suffel of Edgerton, Christopher Stevens of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mrs. Marshall (Amy) Bradley of Reisterstown, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Stevi and John Paine III, Andrew and Brittiany Fisher, Nicole Calloway, Jacob Paine, Kiera Suffel, Caleb Stevens and Anthony and Andrew Bradley.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara and Joann Middleton; four brothers, Walter, Leonard, William and Laurence Bradshaw; and a sister, Nellie Caudle. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home in Bryan and Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Craig - Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove.
Funeral services will be Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., in the Caig - Hurtt Funeral Home with Pastor Duane Crewse to officiate. Interment will follow in Willow Springs cemetery, Mountain Grove. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Leo Herbert Mason
(1920 - 2007)

COLDWATER, Mich. - Leo Herbert Mason, 87, of Coldwater, died Friday, May 18, 2007, at Lakeland Nursing Center, Angola, Ind.
Born May 14, 1920, in Hillsdale County, to Bertha L. (Moore) and Harley Curtis Mason, he married Lula F. Michael on Feb. 9, 1946, at Angola, Ind., and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1993. A lifetime farmer, he had graduated from Frontier High School and was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He, his wife and family were the owners of the Huycks Lake Campground.
Surviving are three daughters, Kay Easterday of Coldwater, Judy Hantz of Montgomery and Peggy Mason of Fremont, Ind.; two sons, Curt (and wife, Rita) Mason and Kim (Elisabeth) Mason, both of Coldwater; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack (Charlene) Mason of Montgomery and Olen Mason of Edon, Ohio; and special friend, Mary George of New Haven, Ind. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be today from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor J. Arnold Fair to officiate. Burial will be at Mundy cemetery, Kinderhook Township, Branch County, Mich.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bertha Louise Thompson
(1940 - 2007)

PIONEER - Bertha Louise Thompson, 67, of Pioneer, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at her residence.
Born Feb. 1, 1940, at Melbern, she married Ronald D. Thompson on Nov. 22, 1958, at Pioneer, and he survives.
A homemaker, she was in the first class that graduated from the North Central High School (formerly Pioneer High School) in 1958.
She was currently employed at Michindoh Camp and Conference Center, rural Hillsdale, in food service.
A member of the Montpelier Moose and Eagles auxiliaries, she was also the treasurer of the Pioneer American Legion Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Bradley (and wife, Brenda) Thompson of Waterloo, Ind.; a daughter, Lisa L. Dorinski of Pioneer; four grandchildren, Benjamin Thompson, Brandy Thompson, Heather Dorinski and Joey Thompson; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Bartholomew Thompson in 1994.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 - 8 p.m. in the Thompson Funeral Home, Pioneer.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Steve Smith to officiate. Interment will be at Floral Grove, Pioneer.
Memorials may be made to Cancer Assistance of Williams County or Pioneer American Legion Auxiliary.

Martha Rediger
(1935 - 2007)

PIONEER - Martha Rediger, 71, of Pioneer, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio - Bryan.
Born Sept. 22, 1935, at Export, Pa., to Mila (Uukelich) and Paul Suzic, she married Donald L. Rediger on Dec. 9, 1972, at Reading, Mich., and he survives.
A homemaker and farmer's wife, she was a member of Montpelier Eagles Auxiliary No. 2246.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five sons, Richard D. Blank of Pioneer, Gary (and wife, Amanda) Blank of Bryan, Charles (April) Blank of Montpelier, Edward B. Blank of Hillsdale, Mich. and Donald (Beth) Rediger of Montpelier; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Roger (Vicki) Stump of Frontier, Mich., Mrs. Steve (Lorie) Bates of Reading, Mich. and Mrs. Jamie (Kathy) Shinnebarger of Edon; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Thompson Funeral Home, Pioneer.
Private graveside services will be Saturday at Floral Grove cemetery, Pioneer with Jim Rediger and Edgar Dixon to officiate.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research or the Lighthouse Wing at Harborside.

William Wayne Harmon

William Wayne Harmon, 84, of Bryan and a former longtime Montpelier resident died Monday evening, April 23, 2007, at Park View Nursing Center, Edgerton, following a lengthy illness.
Born April 9, 1923, at Montpelier, to Martha Marie "Mattie" (Schall) and Earl Emerson Harmon, he married Theresa Joy Toner and she survives.
A lifelong area resident, he was a World War II veteran and had served with the U.S. Marines. He had retired after 40 years as a brakeman and switchman with the Norfolk and Western Railroad at Montpelier.
He was a life member of Bryan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2489, a member of Montpelier Moose No. 312 and Bryan Eagles Aerie No. 2233.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Kathy) Maxwell of Farwell, Mich.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (and wife, Erma) Harmon of Bryan and Maurice (Marjorie) Harmon of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and a sister, Cleola Tressler of Montpelier. He was preceded in death by a sister, Garnet Kuehnle.
There will be no visitation. Burial with military graveside rites will be held at a later date in Oak Grove cemetery, Hillsdale, Mich.
Memorials may be made to the Activity Fund at Park View Nursing Home, Edgerton.

Rev. Marvin Sickmiller
(1920 - 2007)

MONROE, La. - The Rev. Marvin Sickmiller, 86, died Palm Sunday, April 1, 2007. Born Sept. 3, 1920, at Williams Center, Ohio, to Netta and Elmer Sickmiller, he married Vera Rollins on Aug. 15, 1949, and she preceded him in death.
He spent his early years in West Unity, Ohio, graduating from the local high school in 1938, and a few years later enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European theater of action.
He and his wife entered the Christian ministry in 1949, filling pulpits in Michigan and Ohio. In 1989, he entered the evangelistic field and served in that capacity until illness forced his retirement in 2006. Surviving are a son, Daniel (and wife, Deborah); grandsons, Jeffrey (Gina) and Bradley (Julie); a granddaughter, Mrs. Robbie (Kristina) Watts; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert, John and Ralph; a sister, Betty Sharp; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded by two brothers, Charles and James.
Funeral services were held Good Friday, April 6, 2007, at the Bible Missionary Church in Monroe, with burial in a local cemetery.

Florence Grove
(1916 - 2007)

Florence Grove, 91, of Archbold's Fairlawn Village, died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Bryan. Prior to her move to Archbold four years ago, she was a longtime Bryan resident.
Born Jan. 13, 1916, in Paulding, to Ada Fern (Good) and Leo Stombaugh, she was married to Kedric Grove in February of 1943, in Bryan, and he preceded her in death in 1990.
A teacher in Williams County schools for 32 years, she retired in 1980. Her career began at Prospect School, a one - room school in Center Township, and also included positions in the Pioneer schools, Scott School in Superior Township, and Pulaski - Jefferson School. She concluded her career with 23 years teaching third grade at Edgerton Local Schools.
She graduated as valedictorian of the Farmer High School Class of 1934. She went to Manchester College for two years and received a normal teaching certificate in 1937. Later, she finished her bachelor of science degree in education from Manchester College, and took additional coursework at Bowling Green State University and Ohio University.
Mrs. Grove was very active in community and church affairs. She was a past president of the Edgerton Teachers Association and a member of the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. She was still an active member of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teachers sorority.
Beginning in the 1950s, she was involved on the board of Williams County Community Concert Association, serving as president, campaign chair, and recently completing 25 years as publicity chair. For several years, she organized the Williams County Mass Choir and Singspiration programs for the county organization of churches. Also, over the years, she instructed nearly one hundred piano students.
Last year, she concluded 16 years as membership chair of the Williams County Retired Teachers Association. In 2002, she was inducted, as an educator, into the Wall of Fame by the Williams County Historical Society. And, she was a member of the P. Buckley Moss Society of Defiance.
She and her husband, Kedric, served nearly 50 years as deacons for the Lick Creek Church of the Brethren. In church activities, she taught Sunday school, directed vacation Bible schools, played piano and organ, and directed the adult choir. She also planned various training workshops and educational programs at the district level.
In recent years, she was a member of the Lockport Mennonite Church, Stryker, where she participated in the Goldenaires and the Ambassador Sunday school class.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Dean (and wife, Mary) Grove of Bellevue, Wash. and Milan (Mary) Grove of Ardmore, Pa.; a daughter, Myrna Grove of Bryan; four grandsons, Derek (Elizabete) Grove of Seattle, Wash., Jason (Christie) Grove of Seattle, Wash., Jared Grove of Philadelphia, Pa., and Evan Grove of Ardmore, Pa.; a brother, Paul (Lois) Stombaugh of Bryan; and a sister - in - law, Carolyn Grove of Bristol, Ind.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Lockport Mennonite Church on County Road 21 - N, Stryker. Pastor Pamela Short is to officiate. Burial will follow in Shiffler cemetery, Pulaski. Memorials may be made to Lockport Mennonite Church, Lick Creek Church of the Brethren, or Manchester College, North Manchester, Ind.

Shirley A. Stambaugh
(1930 - 2007)

Shirley A. Stambaugh, 76, of Bryan, died Monday morning, April 23, 2007, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers - Bryan.
Born May 24, 1930, at Fort Wayne, Ind., to Pearl (Marker) and Verle K. Thorpe, she married John D. Hare and he preceded her in death. She then married Ralph Stambaugh and he survives in Bryan. A 1948 graduate of Bryan High School, she worked in the Bryan area at Lamar's Diner, Bryan Canning Company, Kelly's Newsstand, Keiser Pharmacy, Gilbert & Herr Pharmacy, Burn's Shoes and Uhlman's Department Store.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, John M. (and wife, Kathleen Sue) Hare of Austin, Texas; daughter, Linda Sue Hare of Toledo; stepchildren, Mrs. Brent (Stephanie) Damman of Napoleon, Scott (Carolyn) Stambaugh of Bryan and Mrs. Gary (Stacey) Nungester of Bryan; a grandson, Andrew J. Hare of Austin, Texas; stepgrandchildren, Jenalee Damman of Napoleon, Justin (Haley) Damman of Liberty Center, Spencer Kaiser of Edon, Candace Kaiser of Bryan, Jordan and Faith Stambaugh of Bryan; sisters, Donna Roberts of Banning, Calif. and Patty Fager of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sister - in - law, Joann Thorpe of Venice, Fla.; and nephews, Doug Thorpe of Venice, Fla. and Dan Thorpe of Bryan.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Verle K. Thorpe Jr.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1 - 5 and 7 - 9 p.m. in the Burr Funeral Home & Crematory, Bryan. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dennis Jones to officiate. Burial will follow in Fountain Grove cemetery, Bryan.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Foundation for the Blind.

Catherine J. Heck
(1931 - 2007)

PAYNE - Catherine J. Heck, age 75, left this world at her residence in Payne, Ohio on April 20, 2007, at 2:45 p.m. and was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus and her beloved husband, Raymond.
She was born in Allen County, Indiana, on July 16, 1931, the daughter of Bernard A. and Vivian L. (Miller) Pepe. On Oct. 14, 1950, she married Raymond G. Heck, who died Jan. 10, 2007. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she was very active belonging to the Choir, CLC, Altar/Rosary Society, Dallas Lamb Foundation Home Auxiliary, Paulding Senior Center, Paulding County Hospital Benevolent Society. A volunteer for St. Patrick's Church Mission, Fort Wayne, Ind., she belonged to Harvest House of New Haven, Ind. and Medugorje Prayer Group.
Surviving are four sons: John Heck, Antwerp, OH, Randy (Mary) Heck, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Raymond (Pam) Heck, Payne, and Bill Heck, Antwerp; seven daughters, Dawnita (Don) Smith, Fort Wayne, Ind., Cheryl (Steve) MacDougall, Red Bud, Illinois, Colleen (Bruce) Summerfield, Hoagland, Ind., Joanne (Harold) Warren, New Haven, Ind., Cindy (Kurt) Michael, Sylvania, OH, Vicki (Ed) Baucom, Payne, OH, and Jackie (Harold) McDougle, Paulding, OH; a brother, Donald Pepe of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a sister, Helen (Roger) Green of Fort Wayne, Ind.; eighteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond; one son, David; one daughter, Bernadette; one brother, Louis Pepe; and one sister, Virginia Hunsberger.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Payne, Ohio with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery, Payne, Ohio.
Visitation will be 2 - 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at the DenHerder Funeral Home, Paulding, Ohio.
Donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Educational Fund, Masses, or Hospice of Paulding County.

Ellsworth L. Custer
(1925 - 2007)

MONTPELIER - Ellsworth L. Custer, 82, of rural Montpelier, died Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, at his home following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 5, 1925, near Edon, to Iva Elizabeth (Knecht) and Charles B. Custer, he married Carol J. Stamm on Jan. 5, 1952, and she survives.
A lifelong area resident and a 1942 graduate of Edon High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.
He had retired in 1987 after 16 years of employment with the maintenance department of the Ohio Turnpike. Also, he was a former employee of Superior Township and had been an area carpenter for many years.
He was a life member of Post No. 944 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Montpelier.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Douglas (and wife, Heather) Custer of Montpelier, Dennis (Christine) Custer of Edgerton and David (Janet) Custer of Montpelier; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Impton of Montpelier; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister - in - law, Bethel Custer of Montpelier.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Franklin E. Custer in 1999.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Wilson - Geesey Funeral Home, Montpelier.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Stephen Smith to officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Montpelier, where graveside military rites will be conducted by Montpelier veteran organizations.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers or the Montpelier Senior Center Renovation Fund.
