Paul E. Owens 12/09/2003

Paul E. Owens, age 83, of Woodside Village Care Center, formerly of Fulton, died Tuesday evening December 9, 2003 in the Morrow County Hospital. He was born January 18, 1920 in Elkhorne City, Kentucky to the late Henry W. and Clara May (Farmer) Owens.

Paul served in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII. He was a member of the Jenkins-Vaughan American Legion Post # 97 and of VFW Post # 8054. Paul had worked at Marion Metal for 22 years prior to his retirement.

On July 20, 1947 in Mount Gilead, Paul married Betty Ruth Gregory and she preceded him in death on December 4, 1989.

Survivors include 3 daughters and a son-in-law; Sherry and Thomas Graham and Paula Kinton all of Cardington, Rose Marie Lyons of Texas ; 5 grandchildren; Kelli and Wayne Marshall, Thomas and Rebecca Graham, Melinda Shade, Nicole and Randy Cochran and David and Billie Lang; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Pauline, Rita, and Betty; and a brother, Winifred.

In addition to his wife and parents, Paul was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 1 sister.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 11, 2003 from 5-8PM at the Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington. Graveside funeral services will be held at Fulton Cemetery Friday, December 12, 2003 at 2PM with Pastor Brian Blackburn of Delaware Grace Brethren officiating. Full military honors will be provided by Jenkins-Vaughan American Legion Post # 97.

Frederick C. Trefz 12/08/2003

Frederick C. Trefz, age 77, of Cardington, died Monday morning, Dec. 8, 2003, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 14,1925 to the late Frederic D. and Caroline (Wanner) Trefz.
A lifelong long resident of the Marion and Morrow County area Fred was drafted into the Army after his Junior year in high school where he went on to serve during WWII. He had worked at Whirlpool Corporation for 26 _ years. In addition to his full time job Fred enjoyed farming, was a member of the Farm Bureau and was very active in the Waldo United Methodist Church.
On Aug. 5, 1951 he married the former Helen L. Rengert at Windfall Lutheran Church and she survives.
Survivors also include 2 sons and their wives, Kelvin and Marilyn Trefz of Powell, and Terry and Judy Trefz of Cardington; and a daughter and her husband, June and Tom Bell of Lima; 5 grandchildren, Matthew Trefz and his wife Rebecca, Jill Trefz, Ryan Trefz, Brian and Evan Bell; 1 sister and her husband Charlotte and Preston Owen; 1 brother and his wife John and Cecelia Trefz; and 3 sister-in-laws, Alma Clunk, Sally Rengert and Joan Banning.
In addition to his parents Fred was preceded in death by 3 brothers, George, Paul and Jim Trefz and 2 sisters Theresa Wright and Brigadier Major Margaret Trefz.
Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington on Wed. December 10 from 6-8PM and Thursday from 1-3 and 6-8PM. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Friday Dec. 12 at the Waldo United Methodist Church with the Pastor Bill Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Waldo Cemetery

Clyde D.  Johnson 11/17/2003

Clyde D. Johnson, age 55, of N. Marion St. in Cardington, passed away late Monday night at the Morrow Co. Hospital. Clyde was born on Sept. 2, 1948 in Sharrondale, KY to the late Hily  Johnson and Dora Lee (Varney)  Johnson who survives him.

Clyde graduated from Northmor H.S in 1966. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Clyde was an active member of both the VFW Post 3297 and Amvets Post 104 where he was the current Post Commander. He was employed as a Fabricator at Delaware Warner Metal Worx.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his daughter Constance Funk of Cardington; 1 stepson, Aaron Kincaid of Cardington; 2 grandchildren, Jacob and Shauna Funk of Cardington; 2 brothers, Robert  Johnson and his wife Judy of Marion, Howard  Johnson of Mt. Gilead; 1 sister Connie Beach and her husband Tom of Galion; Special friend Sherry Leopard and her children Jeffrey and Ashley Leopard all of Cardington.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington on Friday, November 21, 2003 from 5-8PM where the funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 11AM. Burial will follow at Glendale Union Cemetery.

Lois Berdell Faust

CARDINGTON -- Lois Berdell Faust, age 85, of Township Road 25 in Cardington, passed away early Wednesday morning, Nov. 12, 2003, in the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Unit after an extended illness.

She was born on July 31, 1918, in Delaware County, to the late Dale Shoemaker and Wilma (Renz) Shoemaker Worcester.

Berdell graduated from Cardington High School in 1935.

On Dec. 3, 1937, she married Guy Faust at the Cardington Lutheran Church parsonage and he survives her.

Throughout her lifetime Berdell was a homemaker and spent many years as the assistant librarian at the Cardington Public Library. After the tornado, she helped get things up and running again. Berdell also worked with the Westfield Township Election Polls for many years and was a member of the Cardington Homemakers. In her free time, she was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading and had many other varied interests.

In addition to her husband, Berdell is survived by one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Jim Beatty of Cardington; two sons and their wives, Guy "Kemp" and Sharon Faust of Lebanon and Robin and Brenda Faust of Defiance; four grandchildren, Bryan Beatty of Marion, David Beatty of Cardington, Jill Bailey and Julie Faust, both of Defiance; two great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington on Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, from 4-7 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Glendale Union Cemetery in Cardington with George W. Jividen officiating.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Cardington Public Library in care of the funeral home.

Doris Rowlen 11/10/2003

Doris Rowlen, age 64, of ST RT 529, Cardington, Died early Monday morning November 10, 2003, at Saint Ann's Hospital in Westerville. Doris was born in Marion, OH, December 30, 1938 to the late Harold B. and Dorothy L. (TreSidder) Waddell.

Doris married Paul (Peanut) Rowlen on April 24, 1971, at Elm's Creek Friends Church. He survives in Cardington. Doris drove school bus for 26 years for the Cardington-Lincoln School District before retiring. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cardington and a member of Patrick's Coffee Group.

In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by children, Bruce and DeAnna Shrader, Mark and Dawn Shrader, Steve and Judy Castle, Roxanne Lagalo, and Gary and Jennifer Rowlen all of Morrow County and Chuck and Vickie Rowlen of California; brothers and sisters, Sandra Waddell and Donald Waddell of Morrow County, Kenneth Waddell of Kentucky, and Carolyn Schmidt of Colorado; 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Walter Waddell.

Friends may call Tuesday, November 11, 2003 from 4-8PM at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Cardington First United Methodist Church at 5PM with Reverend John  Jackson officiating. There will be a fellowship dinner following the service.

Raymond Wayne Westbrook 11/02/2003

Raymond Wayne Westbrook, better known as Wayne, died early Sunday morning, November 2, 2003 in the Extended Care Unit of Morrow County Hospital. He was born May 30, 1910 in Peru Township to the late Lynn and Gertrude (Baker) Westbrook.

In the mid 1920's the family moved from Ashley to Cardington. Wayne graduated from Cardington High School in 1929. While in school he participated in both the vocal and instrumental music departments. After graduation from high school Wayne went to work for the Gandee Bakery where he remained employed as a foreman until the business was destroyed by fire in 1950. He was then employed by HPM until he retired in 1976.

On August 6, 1932, he was united in marriage to Ruth Conaway by Dr. Frederick W. Haas at the Conaway family home. Ruth survives in Cardington.

They had three children, Jo Ann, Morris, and Marjorie. On the death of her mother, Jo Ann, in 1974 Wayne and Ruth took their granddaughter, Michelle Hardman, into their home.

Always interested in helping wherever there was a need he had delivered Meals on Wheels and been a driver for cancer patients. Wayne served on the Cardington Village Council for eight years. Wayne was an active member of the Cardington Methodist Church where he had served in various positions, since his high school years, from Sunday school teacher and superintendent to a member on various church committees. He sang in the choir as long as his health permitted. Also, he was active with the United Methodist Men. Wayne was also a member of the Cardington Rotary Club and Cardington Senior Citizens. After retiring Wayne became active in the Marion Radio Club enjoying his many contacts around the world. His call letters were KAHMFJ.

In addition to his wife, Wayne is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Leo Gattshall of Marion; six grandchildren, Howard Westbrook of Cardington, David Westbrook of Apple Valley, Kathie Dowdle of North Canton, Lynne Bosh of Marion, Jeffrey Gattshall of Grove City and Michele Adkins of Cardington; eight great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Frances Davis of Iowa; brother-in-law, William Van Horn of Mt. Gilead; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marshall; sister, Frances Van Horn; infant brother; daughter, Jo Ann Catron and son, Morris Westbrook.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. Funeral Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Cardington on Wednesday at 11AM. Reverend John  Jackson will officiate with burial following in Glendale Union Cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Cardington First United Methodist Church, Cardington Rotary Club Scholarship Fund or an organization of the donors choice. These contributions can be made in care of Gompf Funeral Home.

Martha T. Baer, 09/27/2004

Martha T. Baer, age 91, formerly of South Marion Street, Cardington died Monday afternoon, September 27, 2004 at the Village Care Center in Galion. She was born March 29, 1913 in Crawford County to the late Virtue and Olive (Bender) Cleland.

A lifelong homemaker, Martha was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cardington and a member of the Sewing Circle at the church.

On June 16, 1932 in Wheeling, WV she married Waldo F. Baer and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1978.

Survivors include 6 children and their spouses; Priscilla Bowen of Verona, VA, Dolores Gillespie of Galion, Barbara and John Dormer of Kerrville, TX, Carl and Darlene Baer of Naples, FL, Linda and Steven Maceyko of Cardington and Richard Baer of Verona, VA; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janice Baer and by a brother, H. Burdette Cleland.

Friends may call Wednesday, September 28, 2004 from 4-8PM at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 11AM. Pastor Edward Wahl will officiate and burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
