Norwalk, Ohio - Rose B. Finlay, 89, of Norwalk, died Monday, April 7, 2008 in Gaymont Nursing Center. She was born December 31, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was raised in the New London and Norwalk area and had been a resident of the Huron County Children's Home. She graduated in 1936 from Norwalk High School and returned to Norwalk in 1976 from LaPorte, Indiana. She was a member of the Norwalk First Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed committee work. She was a former employee of the Huron County Extension Office and had been active in the Huron County Christian Endeavors Club. She is survived by hr sons and daughters in law, David and Mary Ann Finlay of Boulder, Colorado, Richard A. and Doris Finlay of Bay Village, Ohio and John R. and Nancy Finlay of Riverton, Utah and by her daughers and sons in law, Barbara J. and Charles Beeson of Wakarusa, Indiana and Janet and Edward Roderick of Laporte, Colorado, 12 grandchilren and 21 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, B. Vivian Penfield, by her brother, David Weimer of Tuscon, Arizona and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Rose (Hahn) and Horace Myers and by her brothers, Herbert Myers. Friends may call on Friday, April 11, 2008 from 1:00 P.M. until the time of service at 2:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Adrian Doll, Pastor of the Norwalk First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Collins cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Huron County Humane Society, 246 Woodlawn Avenue, Norwalk, Ohio 44857.

William Edward "Bill" Nestor

Norwalk, Ohio - William Edward "Bill" Nestor, 79, of Norwalk, died peacefully, Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in Twilight Gardens Home. He was born May 4, 1928 in New London, Ohio to the late Francis E. and Elizabeth Marie "Bessie" (Day) Nestor. He lived most of his years in Clarksfield where he attended Clarksfield Elementary and New London High Schools, graduating from New London High in 1947. He was a farmer and livestock transporter. He communed with his Loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with fellow communicants at St. Mary Catholic Church in Wakeman, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in New London and St. Paul Catholic Church in Norwalk as well as in his personal life. He is survived by his brothers and sisters in law, Richard and Darlaine Nestor of Norwalk and Paul and Marie Nestor of Zanesville, Ohio and by his sister in law, Margaret Nestor of New London and by 13 nieces and nephews and families. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Nestor and by his maternal grandparents, Albert and Florence (Jones) Day and by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary (Langdon) Nestor. Friends may call on Friday, April 11, 2008 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, where prayer services will be held on Friday at 7:30 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk with Rev. Frank Kehres officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic cemetery, Wakeman, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norwalk Senior Center where Bill found much enjoyment.

Barbara E. (Fry) (McConegly) Cannella

Norwalk, Ohio - Barbara E. (Fry) (McConegly) Cannella, 66, of Norwalk, died Tuesday April 8, 2008 at her home. She was born March 14, 1942 in Tiro, Ohio to the late Avery E. Fry and Kathryn M. McKew, and came to the Norwalk area in 1965 from Shelby, Ohio. She was a graduate of Shelby High school. She had worked for the Giant Store in Mansfiled, was the owner of Barb's Salon of Beauty in Shelby, was an area babysitter, worked at Crow's Deli, and retired from McDonald's in Norwalk in 1999 as a trainer. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed collecting Knick Knacks and the Sci Fi Channel. She is survived by her son and daughter in law John and Tricia McConegly of Norwalk, by her daughter Mary Angela Cannella of Norwalk, by 4 grandchildren and by her brother Lynn Fry of Norwalk. She was preceded in death by her husband Phillip J. Canella in 2005 and by an infant Brother. Friends may call on Thursday April 10, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main St. Norwalk, Ohio, where funeral services will be held on Friday April 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Audrey M. Ashley

Norwalk, Ohio - Audrey M. Ashley, 85, of Port Clinton, died Monday afternoon in Gaymont Nursing Center. She was born May 17, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Roy and Ida C. (Klitzke) Zinser and came to this area 35 years ago from Denver, Colorado. She was a graduate of the Columbus School of Art and Pratt University in New York City. She was a self employed artist, especially enjoying oils and watercolors. She was a former employee of the Denver Post Commercial Art Department and the Toledo Blade Commercial Art Department. She published and illustrated several children's books and was a co-founder of the former Catawba Art Gallery. She was a member of the Artist Club of Port Clinton and was active in the Arts in the Park program in Port Clinton. She lived and breathed her art having recently taken art classes at Terra Technical Institute. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edward J. Ashley of Port Clinton and by her sister and brother in law, Lucille and George Stephens of Norwalk, 1 niece, 2 nephews and several great nieces and nephews. Private services will be held in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Interment will be in Ottawa Hills cemetery, Toledo. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.

Robert James Geer

NORWALK — Robert James Geer, 79, of rural Norwalk, died Wednesday morning at Fisher-Titus Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born April 1, 1929, in Clarksfield, the second son and fifth child of the late Frank Price and Roselyn Showalter Geer.
He was a 1947 graduate of Norwalk High School, where he was a two-year letter-winner at left guard on the football team under coach Grant Walls. During his senior season in 1946, he and his teammates voted to accept John Ernsthausen’s offer of new football uniforms and equipment and new uniforms for the band in exchange for changing the team’s name from Raiders to Truckers.
After high school, he joined the Army and, along with his younger brother, Richard, was selected to join the 1st Airborne Ranger Company when the Army decided to reconstitute the Rangers as an elite fighting unit. As a sergeant serving in the Korean Conflict, he was seriously injured in a night-time battle at Chipyong-ni in February 1951, for which he received the Purple Heart. During the engagement with the Chinese army, his brother was killed.
In 1953, he became an apprentice bricklayer and stonemason, and graduated as a journeyman in 1957. A union tradesman for 40 years, he served several terms as president of the local unit of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen, and worked as foreman on numerous local and regional construction projects, including Norwalk American Legion post home, St. Paul Elementary School, public school buildings in the Sandusky, Perkins, Western Reserve, Oberlin, South Central, Vermilion, Port Clinton, Fremont, Eastwood, Napoleon and other districts, and public-works projects such as fire stations and government buildings for Roth Brothers, Mosser, Cafaro, Feick and other construction companies.
He was a member of the local American Legion and Disabled American Veterans chapters, Silver Kings of Yesteryear tractor club and Rap-Shaw Hunting and Fishing Club of Stillwater, N.Y. In the 1980s, he served on Norwalk’s first “Blue Ribbon Committee” to build a new high school and, in the past decade, ran twice for a seat on the Norwalk school board.
In 2006, he served as a Bronson Township representative on the Northern Ohio Rural Water board. He enjoyed working on small engines and restoring tractors, and was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan.
In 2001, he was the 123rd Ranger inducted to the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Georgia, in recognition of his heroic efforts to turn back the advancing Chinese army at Chipyong-ni, Korea, on Feb. 14-15, 1951. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arlene M. (Thudium) Geer, whom he married June 10, 1951; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tom Root of Norwalk; a son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Paula Geer of Tampa, Florida; seven grandchildren; sisters, Jeannette Kirkpatrick of Olmsted Falls, Martha Pylant of Norwalk and Jean Richards of Huron; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Price Geer in 1951 and J. William Geer in 2006; and sisters, Maxine Bellamy in 2001 and Jane Twaddle in 2006. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Boulevard, Norwalk. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project, 470 7th Avenue, Room 410, New York City, New York 10018.

Ileta J. Malcolm

Norwalk, Ohio - Ileta J. Malcolm, 71, of Norwalk, died Thursday afternoon in Fisher-Titus Medical Center. She was born November 2, 1936 in Peru Township, Ohio to the late Paul P. and Doris L. (Beck) Manlet and was a lifelong area resident. She was a Christian and attended Faith Memorial Assembly of God in Sandusky and the Norwalk First United Methodist Church. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Paul High School and was a member of the St. Paul Alumni Association. She was a former waitress at Berry's Restaurant, a former cook at Reinecks Tavern and a former hair stylist at Larry's Beauty Salon in Norwalk. She was a former co-owner and co-founder of the original Pressbox Tavern in Norwalk. She retired in 2003 from Norwalk Furniture where she worked for 30 years. She was a volunteer for Stein Hospice Service, was an avid bowler and Ohio State Buckeyes fan and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her sons and daughter in law, Don and Sue Brown of Sandusky and Doug Brown and Sue Neidler of Sandusky and by her daughters and sons in law, Teresa A. and Richard Brutsche of Norwalk and Pattie and Doug Resor of Norwalk, 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Howard Manlet of Cleveland, Ohio. Friends may call on Monday, April 21, 2008 from 5:30 P.M. until the time of service at 7:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Rev. Ken Hiser and Rev. Dr. Roger Smith will officiate. Inurnment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron. Mrs. Malcolm was a tissue donor to the Cleveland Eye Bank and the Cleveland Life Banc. Lillian P. Cesa

Norwalk, Ohio - Lillian P. Cesa, 86, of Norwalk, died Saturday afternoon in Fisher-Titus Medical Center. She was born December 1, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Sylvester and Maria (Pilarowski) Sobolewski and came to this area in 1954 from Cleveland. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella in Cleveland. She was a Pink Lady at Fisher Titus Hospital for over 30 years and was a volunteer poll worker for the Huron County Board of Elections for 20 years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bingo, baking and cooking. She is survived by her sons and daughters in law, Anthony and Florence Cesa of Norwalk and Thomas and Judy Cesa of Norwalk and by her daughters and son in law, Sharon Moon of Norwalk and Rosemary and Gary Nardecchia of Norwalk, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Carl Sobelewski of Cleveland, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quindeen "Blackie" Cesa in 1999 and by her sister, Adeline Radkie. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 from 1:00 P.M. until the time of service at 2:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Frank Kehres will officiate. Kathleen M. Steffanni

Springfield, Ohio - Kathleen M. Steffanni, 66, of Springfield and formerly of Norwalk, died early Wednesday morning in the Good Shepherd Village Nursing Center in Springfield. She was born January 16, 1942 in Milan, Ohio to the late Ross C. and Anne (Wargo) Hayes and was a lifelong area resident before moving to Springfield 5 years ago. She was a member of the former Norwalk Church of the Nazarene and the Springfield Church of the Nazarene. She was a life member of Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion Auxiliary. Her world revolved around her children and grandchildren and she enjoyed collecting Owls, Elephants, playing Bingo (even in the Nursing Center), cooking, playing cards, and her flower gardens. She is survived by Edward F. Steffanni, Sr. of Norwalk, Ohio and by her sons and daughters in law, Isadore "Izzy" and Deborah Steffanni of Norwalk and Edward F. and Jennifer Steffanni II of Springfield, Ohio and by her daughters and son in law, Amy "Jimmy" and Brian Maestas of Norwalk, Ohio and Maryann Krisha of Chicago, Illinois, 7 Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Judy McCusker of Pennsylvania, Mary Ella "Fritzie" Pittenger of Norwalk and Patricia Galloway also of Norwalk and by her foster brother, Thomas Clegg of Charlotte, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Merwin Mead Bailey, step-mother, Thelma Hayes, step-brother, Wayne Mesick and by her foster brother, Lester Clegg. Friends may call on Saturday, April, 26, 2008 from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Phyllis Jane Hinman

Norwalk, Ohio - Phyllis Jane Hinman, 84, of Norwalk, died Sunday morning in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky, Ohio. She was born November 4, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Earnest and Edith (Joy) Holiday. She was a 1942 graduate of Berlin Heights High School and was a member of the Berlin Echos. She was employed at Marting's Department Store in Portsmouth, Ohio for 32 years as Personal Shopper and also worked in the Advertising Department. She was a past president of the Portsmouth Business and Professional Women's Club. She enjoyed bowling, ceramics and cross stitching. She is survived by her husband of 13 years, Thomas Hinman of Norwalk and by her step daughter, Pamela Hinman of Norwalk and by her nieces, Beverly and Alton Reisinger of Elyria, Ohio and Cheryl "Chick" and Ron Engelhardt of Wakeman, Ohio. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Mollie Sturgill

Norwalk, Ohio - Mollie Sturgill, 86, of Norwalk, died Saturday, April 26, 2008 in the home of her great niece and care giver, Debbie May, of Greenwich, Ohio. She was born November 17, 1921 in Hueysville, Kentucky, to the late Malcolm and Arminta (Allen) Horn. She attended elementary and secondary school in Kentucky and graduated from New Haven High School, New Haven, Ohio and returned to Kentucky. She attended Lee's College in Jackson, Kentucky and graduated from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio in 1970 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. She was an Educator and had taught in the Berlin-Milan Public Schools and retired in 1986 from the New London Public Schools. She enjoyed Reading, Current Events, Politics, History and spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughters and son in law, Sharon K. and Alex MacNicol of Milan, Ohio and Charlene Sturgill and Elaine Sturgill, both of Norwalk. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sean MacNicol, Blake MacNicol and Vanessa Schaller and by her great grandson, Mason Schaller. She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Joe Sturgill in 1985, by her brothers, Morton Horn, Orville Horn, Rev. James Horn and Grant Horn and by her sister, Edith Price. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. Betty M. Zorn

Norwalk, Ohio - Betty M. Zorn, 89, of Norwalk, died early Tuesday morning in her daughters home in Sandusky, Ohio. She was born February 26, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Emil and Gladys (Harris) Braeunig and lived in this area most of her life having lived with her Aunt, Mrs. H.P. "Aunt Rhode" Becker after the death of her parents. She was a member of Norwalk First Presbyterian Church, past worthy matron of Queen Esther Chapter #15 Order of the Eastern Stars, Norwalk, and a former member of the Norwalk Elks Auxiliary. She was a legal secretary for the law offices of Carpenter and Paffenbarger, Norwalk and a former employee of Henry's Flower Shop, Norwalk. Betty spent her whole life devoted to her daughter and family. Her youthful spirit was loved by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Susan M. Zorn-Maguire and Jack Maguire of Sandusky and one step-grandson. She is also survived by her sisters in law, Dorothy Judson, Marjorie Hoerig and Joan Zorn, all of Sandusky and her brother and sister in law, Louis and Norma Zorn of Sandusky, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Zorn in 1973 and by her brother, Robert Braeunig. Friends may call on Friday, May 2, 2008 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. in the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Boulevard, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Adrian Doll will officiate.
