Christopher D. Hite

Norwalk, Ohio - Christopher D. Hite, 33, of Sandusky, Ohio, died Monday, May 3, 2010 at his father's home in Norwalk, Ohio. He was born October 14, 1976 in Norwalk, Ohio and was a lifelong area resident.
Chris was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was a 1995 graduate of St. Paul High School. He was a construction foremen for Sandusky Bay Construction Company. Chris was a member of the Norwalk Elks Lodge, VFW, and the Cement Masons and Plasterers Union Local 404 out of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a certified PADI advanced open-water scuba diver and enjoyed diving in many areas of the world, most recently a trip to Mexico. He was a passionate traveler and loved exploring other cultures. Chris also enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and music concerts. He was a great friend and enjoyed helping others with his many talents, one of those guys who could fix or repair anything and was always there when you needed him. Chris especially enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed being around kids and young people.
He is survived by his mother, Rebecca A. "Becky" Hite of Norwalk, Ohio, by his father, David B. "Bruce" Hite also of Norwalk, Ohio, and by his life partner, Shelly L. Zeiher of Sandusky, Ohio. Chris is also survived by his brother, Bradley A. Hite and Tracy Holt of Sandusky, Ohio, by his sister, Kimberly A. Hite of Norwalk, Ohio, by his maternal grandmother, Mary M. Barker of New London, Ohio, by his paternal grandparents, Jean (Hite) and Jack Taylor of Norwalk, Ohio, and Betty and Bob Hunter of Attica, Ohio and by his nieces and nephews, Jordan Hite, Makayla Hite, Matthew Rash, Kelsey Hite, Kendall Zeiher, Logan Vaccaro, Jasmine Holt and Jordan Holt, as well as many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
He is also survived by his mother and father in law, Mark and Barb Zeiher of Sandusky, Ohio, by his sister in law, Kim Vaccaro of Sandusky, Ohio and by his brother and sister in law, Matt and Stephanie Zeiher of Sandusky, Ohio. Chris was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Oren "Babe" Barker in 1993, by his paternal grandfather, David N. Hite in 1991, and by brother in law, Matt Vaccaro in 2009.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 7, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Frank Kehres will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hite family.

Jewell A. Terry Cogan

Norwalk, Ohio - Jewell A. Terry Cogan, 71, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Thursday, May 13, 2010 in her home. She was born May 21, 1938 in Kenton, Ohio to the late Curtis B. and Beatrice H. (French) Wyomic and came to this area in 2004 from Semour, Connecticut.
Jewell was raised in Milford, Connecticut, graduated from Milford High School, attended New Haven Business School and Post Junior College and lived in Southbury, Connecticut for many years. She was a retired home health nurse and a former employee of Uniroyal World Headquarters in Middlebury, Connecticut. Jewell was a member of Eagles Aerie #711 Auxiliary, Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and was a former volunteer for the Health Center and Salvation Army. Jewell enjoyed flower gardening, corresponding with family and friends with cards and letters, and senior citizen bus trips to casino's.
She is survived by her sons and daughter in law, Robert F. Cogan, III of Watertown, Connecticut and George C. and Cindy Terry of Naugatuck, Connecticut and by her grandchildren, Cassandra Cogan, Samantha Delregno, Leonard Charbonneau, Jennifer Charbonneau, and Nancy Ann Charbonneau, and by her great grandson, Ryan Bowley.
Jewell was preceded in death by her first husband, George C. Terry.
There will be no local services. Inurnment will be in Milford, Connecticut. Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.

Gretchen B. Hester
March 25, 1932 – May 31, 2010

NORWALK – A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Gretchen (Burkle) Hester, 78, will be held Sunday June 6, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Norwalk, Ohio. Visitation will be at 1:00pm, with services following at 3:00pm. Gretchen has planned this to be a joyous Celebration of Life, and she intends to share it with her family, church, and community!
Gretchen passed away at the Cleveland Clinic on Memorial Day, while surrounded by her loving family, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
Gretchen was born in Youngstown, Ohio to C.K. (Buck) Burkle and Gertrude Weaver Burkle. She lived in several towns during her early childhood, before moving to Norwalk in 1947, which has been her home ever since. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1950, and from Miami University, College of Education, with honors.
On December 19, 1953 Gretchen married her high school sweetheart David L. Hester. Together they have raised a family and have been very active in the Norwalk community.
Gretchen served many roles in her church including Deacon, Ordained Elder, and Stephen Minister, and with her sisters in Small Group and many other activities including Council of Church Women.
She taught and coordinated Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) for 21 years in Norwalk and Huron County and retired in 1998. She also taught kindergarten, tutored, and mentored. She was inducted into the NHS Hall of Fame in 2003.
Working with children was a passion. Gretchen was 4H advisor for 15 years, youth leader for scouts, farm bureau, and other groups, and a friend to everyone.
Community involvement included Farm Bureau, Volunteer Center, and Community Mental Health Board. Gretchen was active in Ohio Genealogical Society, and a Life Member of Firelands Historical Society.
She belonged to Research Club for 50 years, and Firelands Area College Women. She served on the Huron County Board of Elections for over 40 years.
Gretchen was the Matriarch of her family, and the center of many family gatherings. Surviving Gretchen are her husband of 56 years David L. Hester of Norwalk, Ohio. Sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen and Alice Hester, Bradenton FL; Kevin and Debora Hester, Rochester Hills MI; Mark and Sandra Hester, Haymarket VA; Scott and Carol Hester, Columbus OH; Catherine Hester Tucker, Gahanna OH. Daughter and son-in-law Laura and Thurland (Mike) Colbert, Norwalk OH; eight granddaughters and eight grandsons. Jana, Jessica, Christina, Caitlin, Spenser, Anna and Sarah Hester; and Jennifer (Hester) Scaggs; Matthew, Bradley, Noah, Kenneth, Samuel, and Ryan Hester; Ethan and Jacob Colbert, and one great-granddaughter Aubrey Scaggs. Brothers and sisters-in-law Gary and Judith Burkle, Upper Arlington OH; Thomas and Pam Burkle, Downers Grove IL; Eleanor Hester Omoto and Robert Gulliver, Okemos MI. And many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceded in death by her father in 1958, and her mother in 1986, two sisters in infancy, Judith Abby and Cathy Jane, infant grandchild Jesse Colbert, and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law Loren and Marian (Lawrence) Hester of Norwalk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Blvd, Norwalk, OH 44857, or the Norwalk City Schools ABLE program. Private inurnment will be in Hester cemetery. Walker Funeral Home 98 West Main St. Norwalk is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel L. Bowers

Fremont, Ohio - Daniel L. Bowers, 59, of Fremont, Ohio and formerly of Norwalk, Ohio, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born July 10, 1950 in Norwalk, Ohio and was a 1969 graduate of Norwalk High School.
Daniel was a member of the Victory Christian Church of Fremont, Ohio. He is survived by his father, Charles O. Bowers of Norwalk, Ohio and by his brother, Larry and Carleen Bowers of Willard, Ohio and by his sister, Linda and Dale Delamater of Norwalk, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty M. Bowers in 2006.
Friends may call on Friday, June 4, 2010 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. Rev. Duane Dunfee of the Victory Christian Fellowship Church will officiate.
Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bowers Family.

William A. Ensign

Norwalk, Ohio - William A. Ensign, 69, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Monday, April 19, 2010 in his home. He was born February 21, 1941 in Collins, Ohio to the late Kenneth V. and Eva Mae (Cook) Ensign and was a lifelong area resident.
Bill was an 18 year employee of Fallhabers in Monroeville, Ohio and was a former employee of the Press Box Restaurant in Norwalk, Ohio and the Country Kitchen Restaurant in Willard, Ohio. He enjoyed music and watching old movies.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Ensign of Norwalk, Ohio and by his sister, Joyce Haney of Hebron, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Violet Lorraine Kessler. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 2:30 P.M. in the Olena cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.

B. Vivian Jarvis Penfield

Norwalk, Ohio - B. Vivian Jarvis Penfield, 85, of Norwalk died Sunday at Norwalk Memorial Home. She was born September 7, 1924 in New London, Ohio to the late Horace and Catherine (Hahn) Myers and was a lifelong area resident.
Vivian was a former Private Duty Nursing Assistant and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and reading. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Timothy and Annette Jarvis of Temperance, Michigan and by her daughter, Beverly J. Penfield of Norwalk, Ohio, by her step sons and daughters in law Louis H. Penfield and Ramona Keefer of Norwalk, Ohio, Thomas C. and Sandy Penfield of Scottsdale, Arizona, by her brother and sister in law David and Joan Weimer of Tucson, Arizona by her grandchildren Sonya and James Stiles, Christina and David Ottersbach, Cynthia and Satoru Takahashi, Bradley Jarvis, John Jarvis, Tisa Penfield and Leo Rivera, Haley Penfield, Brittany Penfield, Courtney Penfield, Kelsey Penfield, Gabriel Penfield and Lindsey Penfield, and by 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis H. Penfield, Sr., adoptive parents, Elmer and Dorothy (Williams) Horning, brother, Herbert Myers, and by her sister, Rose Finlay. Friends may call on Thursday April 29, 2010 from 11:00 A.M. until time of services at 1:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main St. Norwalk, Ohio. Burial will follow in Grove Street cemetery, New London, Ohio.

Miriam R. Frey

Norwalk, Ohio - Miriam R. Frey, 82, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Friday, April 30, 2010 in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky, Ohio following a short and courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 22, 1927 in Erie, Pennsylvania and came to this area in 1939 from Sandusky, Ohio.
Miriam was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was a 1945 graduate of Norwalk High School. Her life was loving and caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Miriam was also a great and generous friend often putting others needs before her own. She had a "green thumb" and enjoyed gardening and cross word puzzles.
Miriam is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Butler and Stephen Reed of Norwalk, Ohio and by her sons and daughter in law, Timothy and Pamela Frey of Napoleon, Ohio and Thomas J. Frey and Michelle Sweet of Norwalk, Ohio, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, former mayor of Norwalk, Ohio, Louis G. Frey, August 1, 2005, by her parents, Harry L. and Nora (Bicksler) Liebhart, and by her brother, Russell Liebhart. Friends may call on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Frank Kehres will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Catholic cemetery.

Charley L. Woods

Norwalk, Ohio - Charley L. Woods, 82, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Friday, May 7, 2010 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Charley fought a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born December 26, 1927 in Pikeville, Kentucky, the son of the late Litha Woods, Charley moved to Norwalk in 1959. He did construction work for Coloricci Construction Company of Cleveland, Ohio for 18 years then worked for Bob Case Construction until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed being outside, his garden, and his roses. Charley was an avid hunter, a member of the Nova-Ruggles Conservation Club where he and his son, Chuck, attended turkey shoots, as well as the New London Eagles.
Charley is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bonnie (Case) Woods, a daughter and son in law, Danna and Robert Gibson of Beachwood, Ohio, a son and daughter in law, Charles and Darlene Woods of Collins, Ohio, by his grandchildren, Matthew and Michelle Hopkins of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Danielle Woods and fiancée Mickey Archacki of Collins, Ohio, and Devin Gibson of Beachwood, Ohio. He is also survived by his nephew, Brian and Doris Waldron and by Alexis N. Proctor who spent a great portion of their childhood with him, by his sisters, Lillie Gravett of Michigan, Anise Prater of Greasy Creek, Kentucky, by sisters in law, Yvonne Woods Abshire of Kentucky, Betty Sue Woods of Indiana, Linda and Bruce Harp of Wellington, Ohio and Donna Lescher of Norwalk, Ohio, and by brothers in law, Leon Case of Wooster, Ohio and Quinton (J.R.) and Lisa Case of Norwalk, Ohio, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
Greeting Charley in Heaven are his brothers, Tony and Joe Woods, uncle, Tony Pinion, sisters, Gladys and Elbert Mullins, Fannie Woods, Irene and Maynard Damron, Lucille and Bill Ferguson, brothers in law, Ike Prater, Frank Gravett, Bob Case, Larry Case, David Lescher, and by sister in law, Kathy Waldron-Myers.
Friends may call on Monday, May 10, 2010 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. Rev. Travis Bailey will officiate. Interment will be in Collins cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
