Margaret Lucille Marburger
Born in Lorain, Ohio on April 6, 1914

Margaret Lucille Marburger, 91, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, December 26, 2005 in Union Hospital.

She was a well-known area LPN who worked for 17 years with Massillon State Hospital and the Tuscarawas County Retirement Home. She was instrumental in the organization of the LPN of Ohio's Division 20, which has included hundreds of local LPN's over the years.

Born April 6, 1914 in Lorain, she was the daughter of the late V. L. & Hattie Steele McAndrews.

Margaret was a card shark who always enjoyed a good game of jass. She had been a member of the Dover Army-Navy club and the New Philadelphia Eagles auxiliary. She was also proud of her longtime affiliation with Royal Neighbors of America, following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Marburger, who died in 1976.

Survivors include: three daughters, Maxine (Robert) Whitman of Midvale, Virginia (Ronald) Smith of New Phila., and Doris (Richard) Mussman of Kingsland, GA; twenty-one grandchildren; and many loving great and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by: three brothers, John, Harry, and Alexander France; and three sisters, Hattie Rennicker, and Florence and Wilma France.

Longtime family friend, Elder Glenn Carlisle will officiate a service that celebrates Margaret's life on Friday, December 30, at 2:00 p.m. in Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia. Friends and family will gather in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center for a meal immediately following the service. Friends may call in the funeral home on Thursday from 2-5pm.

Mary Hayward
Born in Newcomerstown, Ohio on Jan. 31, 1912
Departed on December 25, 2005 and resided in Dover, OH.

Mary Kathryn 'Kay' Hayward, 93, of 3595 Reichman Dr. N.W., Dover, Ohio died Christmas Day, 2005 in the Hennis Care Centre at Dover.

She was a beautician for twenty years and was an employee of the former Schwartz Kline's Store in New Philadelphia. She was also a former employee of the Montgomery Wards Store in Dover.

Born January 31, 1912 in Newcomerstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Milan and Maude Marshall Meyer.

Kay was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Dover. She enjoyed quilting and needlepoint.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Hayward who died March 30, 1987. She was also preceded by a son in law, Howard 'Dick' Reichman, a brother, George Meyer, and a sister, Betty Hellgren.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Reichman of Dover and Susan (Ed) Smith of Canton; a son, Tom Hayward of Dover; nine grandchildren Deb Clinton, Susan Everhart, Lauri Mamarella, Kim Chek, Kelly Fishley, Julie Thompson, Bill Smith, Jennifer Hayward, and Amy Hayward along with twelve great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday December 30, 2005 at 2pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Dr. William C. Haggis officiating. Entombment will be in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6-8 pm and Friday from 1-2pm.

Eugene D. Barker
Born in Burnsville, WV on Jan. 8, 1919

Eugene D. Barker, 86, a longtime New Philadelphia resident, died Sunday, December 25, 2005, in the Hennis Care Centre, Dover.

He spent more than 24 years working locally for General Electric. For many years over that same period of time, he was a custodian at New Philadelphia High School.

Born January 8, 1919 at Burnsville, WV, he was the son of the late French D. & Rachael Mick Barker.

Gene was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in New Philadelphia. He was a longtime support of the New Philadelphia Marching Quaker Band and assisted as a chaperone on trips for several years. He was also a green thumb who loved tending to his vegetable garden. In fact, during the warm weather gardening months, always told friends how he would never go hungry with his famous peanut butter and tomato sandwiches.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred V. Barker, who died December 5, 1980.

Survivors include: a son, Royce Barker of Louisiana; a sister, Ruth C. McHenry, of Massillon; and a grandson Scott Barker.

In addition to his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by a brother, E. Sherwood Barker.

Tim Hatfield will officiate a ceremony that celebrates Gene's life on Wednesday, December 28, at 2:00pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Friends may call in the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until time of services at 2:00 p.m.

Robert J. Becker
Born in Dover, Ohio on June 22, 1919

Robert J. Becker, 86, of 2214 N. Walnut St., Dover, Ohio died Christmas Day, 2005 in his home lovingly surrounded by his family.

Bob was a lifelong farmer having owned and operated Becker Farms in Dover. In recent years, he enjoyed taking drives around one of his farms, now Becker Creek development in Dover.

Born June 22, 1919 in Dover, he was the son of the late Edward G. and Amelia Handrich Becker. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Donald E. Becker and Warren A. Becker, his stepmother, Helen Handrich Lab Becker, two stepbrothers, Paul and Albert Lab, and a stepsister, Hilda Domer.

Bob was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover. He was also a former member of the Dover Exchange Club. He was a member of the Dover Elks Lodge, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, former Unity Grange and now the Brandywine Grange.

Bob was devoted to his wife and family and his grandchildren and great grandchildren brought much joy to his life. His family and friends will miss his hearty laugh and sense of humor along with the twinkle in his eyes when he smiled. He enjoyed spending his winters in Florida.

Bob is survived by his wife, June Grimm Becker with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage last February 16; four daughters, Amelia 'Millie' (Don) Page of New Philadelphia, Margaret 'Peg' (Joseph John) Krantz of Dover, Shirley (Paul) Tharp of Dover, and Jane Wallick of Dover; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Sam) Sayre, Christopher (Melody) Page, Stacey Page, Terry (Keeley) Krantz, David (Stephanie) Krantz, Shawn Tharp, Nathan (Mindy) Tharp, A1C Zachary Wallick, and Lindsey Wallick; five great grandchildren, Shayla, Chanda, and Brittany Page, Dylan and Samantha Sayre.

Funeral services celebrating Bob's life will be held Friday, December 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover with Pastors Dan Schaefer and Dana Kierstead officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Thursday from 5-8 pm and at the church Friday from 10-11 am.

Erma B. Adams
Born in Carroll County, Ohio on November 25, 1912
Departed on December 19, 2005 and resided in Dover, OH.

Erma B. Adams, 93, a longtime Mineral City resident who had also resided throughout Tuscarawas County in later years, died Monday, December 19, 2005 in the Park Village Health Care Center.

She was born, November 25, 1912 and was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Elizabeth Riggle Dessecker.

For 29 years, Erma worked as a tile mounter and inspector for the Sparta Ceramic Company, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of the Dover Baptist Temple. She had been active with Tuscarawas County YMCA and was a very talented dancer who could still gave a great version of the Charleston even later in her years.

Erma had a soft spot in her heart for the important people in her life as well. For years after her retirement, she, along with what was normally a car full of friends, would make the rounds visiting shut-ins. She also cherished her role of grandmother and dearly loved each moment spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by: two sons, Dale (Glenda) Adams of Somerdale, and Elden Ray (Ann) Adams of Sheffield, PA; twelve grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren; a brother, Harry L. 'Leroy' (Gloria) Dessecker of Strasburg; sister, Martha Emaline Olivet of Bolivar; a daughter-in-law, Betty Adams of Mineral City, many nieces and nephews, and many loving friends, including special friend, Ellen Schlimm of Strasburg.

In addition to her parents, Erma was preceded in death by a son, Earl Adams, and a granddaughter, Lila K. Adams.

A funeral service celebrating Erma's life will be held Thursday, December 22, at 2:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park in New Phila. Friends may call in the funeral home on Thursday from noon until time of services at 2:00 p.m.

Mildred H. Singleton
Born in New Philadelphia, Ohio on February 23, 1916
Departed on December 15, 2005 and resided in Dover, OH.

Mildred H. Singleton, 89, of 205 W. Slingluff Ave., Dover, Ohio died Thursday, December 15, 2005 in the Hennis Care Centre at Dover following an extended illness.

Born February 23, 1916 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lena Christner Ball.

Mildred was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover, AARP, Dover Craft Club, and the Blue Star Mothers. She enjoyed bicycling and was a member of the Three Wheelers Bicycle Group. She was a 1934 Graduate of New Philadelphia High School. She enjoyed crafts and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Singleton with whom she celebrated 68 years of marriage on September 18; She is also survived by two sons, Norman (Karen) Singleton of New Philadelphia and Robert 'Fred' (Katherine) Singleton of Dover; two daughters, Susan (Ed) Rufener of Strasburg and Beth (Ron) Kilchenman of Wadsworth; four grandchildren Edward (Vicki) Rufener, Robert (Amy) Rufener, Beth (Chokri) Jouini, and Quentin Singleton along with eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Katie Albaugh of Dover and Virginia Swinderman of New Philadelphia.

Mildred was preceded in death by a grandson, Ronald A. Rufener; three sisters, Margaret Morris, Ruth Schwartz, and Helen Varalli and a brother, Russell Ball.

A funeral service celebrating Mildred's life will be held Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 10am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Rev. Glen Shedlock officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9-10 am.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Elizabeth Anne McKinley
Born in Wheeling, WV on April 27, 1924

Elizabeth Anne 'Betty' McKinley, 81, of Dover, and a former longtime resident of Marion, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005 in Union Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Wheeling, WV on April 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Ida Mae Stephens Baker.

She was a longtime teacher and guidance counselor in the Marion school district.

Betty was very busy in the Marion community while serving on city council and as a member of the Marion Republican Women. She was also an active member of Marion's Epworth United Methodist Church. Upon her retirement, Betty became involved with Marion General Hospital as a volunteer.

In later years, she attended the First United Methodist Church at Dover.

She took great pride in her family and will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and sister. Her talent for baking everyone's favorite cookies made family holidays extra special. She will also be remembered for her generosity and unconditional love.

She is survived by: three children, Kevin (Margie Thompson) Ionno of Savannah, GA, Chris Ionno of Hickory, NC, and Michael (Debra Atkins) Ionno of Garrett Park, MD; seven grandchildren, Sherri (Micah) Ionno-De la Cruz, Aimee (William) Schmidt, Zachariah (Anisa Muhammad Ali) Ionno, Tony Ionno, Elizabeth (Sean) Chevalier, Joshua Ionno, and Peter Ionno; ten great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a brother, Charles (Irma) Baker of Beach City; a sister, Mary (Ray) Bender of Strasburg; and a special friend, Bob Willis, whom she became acquainted with while residing at Park Village.

A service celebrating Betty's life will be held Friday, October 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church at Dover with Pastor Dairel Kaiser officiating. Interment will be in Strasburg's Grandview Union cemetery.

Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover on Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to: the Christian Children's Fund, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294, or the charity of the donor's choice.

William Vasbinder
Born in Dover, OH on Jul. 4, 1934

William 'Bill' Vasbinder, 71, of Dover died Monday, October 17, 2005 at his home.

He retired in 1994 from Gradall after 33 years of service.

Born July 4, 1934 in Dover he was the son of Florence Lengler Vasbinder of Dover and the late Hubert Vasbinder.

Bill was a member of First Christian Church in Dover, Tuscarawas Lodge #59 F & AM in Dover, Scottish Rite in Canton, Tadmor Shrine in Akron, New Philadelphia Elks, Bolivar Sportsmen's Club, Dover and New Philadelphia VFW, Bolivar Army/Navy Club and was an Army veteran. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, listening to 50's music, photography, reading, traveling and spending the winter months in the south.

Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, LaVern Hootman Vasbinder who died on June 11, 1968 and is survived by his second wife, Virginia Ross Vasbinder with whom he celebrated 35 years of marriage on June 20, 2005.

He is also survived by four daughters, Debbie (Tom) Downing of Dover, Sharon (Shawn) Smith of Alliance, Karen (Don) Colvin of New Philadelphia and Cathy (Ron) Saffell of Dover; son, Chris (Sherri) Vasbinder of Dover; 13 grandchildren, Erin and Casie Downing of Dover, Nathan and Keith Smith of Alliance, Lucas, Libby and Ally Vasbinder of Dover, Kyle Cooper of Wauseon, Kent (Lana) Cooper of Tuscon, Janson Colvin of New Philadelphia, Matthew Colvin of Dundee, Gina and Kendra Saffell of Dover.

In keeping with Bills wish, cremation has taken place through the care of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory in Dover. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2005 at 11:00 am in the First Christian Church in Dover with David Dahlstein and Kenard Parrott officiating. Friends can call at the church one-hour prior to the service on Friday.

Memorial contribution may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County or to First Christian Church in Dover.
