A. Darrell Smith
(1933 - 2005)

A. Darrell Smith, 72, of Bryan, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.
Born Jan. 3, 1933, at Atlanta, Ga., to Viola (Parker) and Arthur D. Smith, he married Karen (Stark)  Jackson in 1990 at Niagra Falls, N.Y.
Employed in sales and marketing at Ohio Gas for over 17 years, he later worked at American Electric Power until his retirement in 2000.
Serving in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 15, 1950 through Dec. 15, 1953, he had served during the Korean War.
He coached baseball and girls fast-pitch softball, Church League softball, baseball and flag football. He served the Bryan Little League as president, umpire in chief and vice president. He was a Cub Master, an advisor for Junior Achievement and past president of the Bryan Athletic Boosters. Also, he was a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Clubs of Bryan. He served as a trustee for the Bryan Eagles for over 15 years and was responsible for much money being donated for community charities. He served on the boards of the Northwest State Community College, the Bryan Parks and Recreation Department and the Bryan Senior Center.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Mike (and wife, Denise) Smith of Bryan and Jeff (Jari) Smith of Cincinnati; a stepson, Corby  Jackson of Bryan; two stepdaughters, Erin Prim of Carthage, N.C. and Sarah  Jackson of Kettering; grandchildren, Nathan, Travis, Tyler, Alexandra and Madison Smith, Reece Cameron, Abigail Prim and Brian Jackson; a half brother; and two stepsisters.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister; and a stepsister.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. in the Burr Funeral Home and Crematory, Bryan.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the New Hope Community Church, Bryan, with the Rev. George Kreger to officiate. Burial will follow at the Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan.
Memorials may be made to the Williams County Humane Society, the Bryan Athletic Boosters or the American Heart Association.

Ruth Mayes
(1908 - 2005)

CONTINENTAL -Ruth Mayes, 96, of Continental, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio-Bryan.
Born Sept. 17, 1908, at Arthur, Ohio, to Eliza (McCague) and George W. Bodenbender, she married Lee Mayes on Sept. 1, 1928, and he preceded her in death on June 22, 1986.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Continental United Methodist Church, a long time member of the Sharon Grange and a former member of the Sorosis Club of Continental.
Surviving are a son, Gaylon (and wife, Beverly) Mayes of Valrico, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Phyllis) Stuckey of Stryker and Mrs. Don E. (Dolores) Myers of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Fremont, Paul, Karl and Melford Bodenbender; four sisters, Bessie Skiver, Georgia King, Helen March and Rebecca Bobenmyer; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today from 5-9 p.m. in the Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Continental and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. in the Continental United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Greg Wack and the Rev. Nick Woodall to officiate.
Memorials may be made to Gideons or the Continental United Methodist Church.

Norma M. Bockelman
(1917 - 2005)

DEFIANCE - Norma M. Bockelman, 87, of Defiance, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Laurels of Defiance.
Born Oct. 12, 1917, at Henry County, to Helen (Behnfeldt) and Frank C. vonSeggern, she married William H. Bockelman in 1937 and he preceded her in death in 1991.
A homemaker and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, she was a member of the Ladies Aid, Quilting Ladies, Missionary League, Altar Guild and the Jolly Mixers, all of the church. She was also a former Girl Scout Leader in the Defiance area.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. William (Joyce) Meyer of Sun City, Calif., Mrs. Richard (Carol) Greulach of Van Wert and Mrs. Richard (Betty) Schwarzbek of Bryan; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Frank F. (and wife, Virginia) vonSeggern of Wauseon. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in the St. John Lutheran Church, Defiance. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Donald L. Luhring to officiate. Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Defiance County. Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the church or to the donor's choice.

John G. "Jack" Souter
(1937 - 2005)

SANDUSKY - John G. "Jack" Souter Jr., 67, of Sandusky, died early Wednesday morning, Aug. 24, 2005, at the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, following a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 5, 1937, in Sandusky, to Marian (Gilbert) and John G. Souter Sr., he married Lois A. Hartung and she survives.
A 1956 graduate of Sandusky High School, he had attended Bowling Green State University. He was the owner of Quick-Park Funeral Home, Inc. until his retirement in 1997.
In addition to his wife of nearly 40 years, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rich (Jennifer) Kalb of Bucyrus and Laurie A. Souter of Perkins Township; two grandsons, Fisher and Carson Kalb of Bucyrus; a brother, Tom (and wife, Jan) Souter of Norwalk; three sisters, Mrs. John (Kathy) Drummer, Mrs. Dennis (Donna) Depner, both of Port Clinton, and Mrs. Rev. Richard (Sherry) Buchsteiner of Bryan; an uncle, two aunts and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Fred and Loretta Phillips.
Visitation will be held Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 2 p.m. in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 214 E.  Jefferson St., Sandusky. The Rev. R. Bruce Morrison of Trinity United Methodist and the Rev. Richard W. Buchsteiner, brother-in-law, will officiate. Quick-Park & Pfeil Funeral Home, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Northwest Chapter, 2500 North Reynolds Road, Toledo, Ohio 43615-2820, or the Humane Society of Erie County, 1911 Superior St., Sandusky or the Stein Hospice Care Center c/o Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.

Kathy L. Litten
(1959 - 2005)

TOLEDO - Kathy L. Litten, 46, of Toledo, died suddenly, Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at The Toledo Hospital, surrounded by friends and family.
Born Jan. 10, 1959, at Bryan, to Waneta (Potter) and Carroll Hetz, she married Richard Arlen Litten Sr. and he survives.
A 1976 alumnus of Bryan High School, she worked with her husband at Southside Cycle and participated in motorcycle drag racing.
In addition to her husband of 10 years, she is survived by sons, Eric (and wife, Chris) Shull of Holland, Ohio and Steven Shull of Cecil; stepchildren, Mrs. Michael (Ruthanne) Bezeau, Richard A. Litten Jr. and Kelly Litten; grandchildren, Alec and Chaz Shull, James, Dave, Chris, Danielle, Jacob and Joshua; her mother, Waneta Hetz of Bryan; sisters, Mrs. Gary (Jacqueline) Howe of Toledo and Mrs. Randy (Susan) Kinney of Wichita Falls, Texas ; a brother, Robert (and wife, Diane) Hetz of Bryan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 1-6 p.m. in the Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home, 1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood (419-269-1111).
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private for the family.
She was an organ/tissue donor and memorials may be made to Life Connection of Ohio.

Vivian B. Mieth
(1914 - 2005)

EDGERTON - Vivian B. Mieth, 91, of Edgerton, died at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, in Harborside Heathcare of Northwest Ohio in Bryan, where she had been a resident for three weeks.
Born May 8, 1914, in Edgerton, she was the daughter of Glen H. and Lulu Marie (Wilder) Woodward. She married August Mieth on Sept. 13, 1957, in Edgerton, and he preceded her in death in June 1983.
A homemaker, she had spent her working career as a bookkeeper for The Edgerton Earth, Caseberes and Days before working for Syncrotec in Edgerton, Ames and Bryan Nursing Care Center.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Maynard (Patricia) Grimm, of West Unity; one grandson, Jamie Grimm, of Sheboygan, Wis.; and one great-grandson, Brenden Grimm, of Toledo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Stephanie Grimm, in 1999; and one brother, Harry Woodward.
Visitation will be private.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton.
Memorials may be given to the Edgerton EMS or to Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Williams and Fulton Counties.
