Walter H. Dickman
(1917 - 2005)
HOLGATE - Walter H. Dickman, 88, of Holgate, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at the Napoleon Lutheran Home, Napoleon.
Born Feb. 19, 1917, in Henry County, to Margaret (Steingass) and John M. Dickman, he married Virginia C. Clemens on Feb. 20, 1939 and she survives.
Employed for 30 years at the Pet Milk Co. as assistant manager, he was also a delivery driver for the Miller Gas Co. and was a self-employed farmer and carpenter.
He was the past president of the Henry County Coon Hunter's club, a member of the Fountain City Squares-dance club, the Defiance Senior Center and St. Mary's Catholic Church Noodle Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Gunter of Napoleon, Carol Terry of Cassopolis, Mich., Mrs. David (Cathy) Rosell of Jefferson City, Mo. and Mrs. Terry (Dianna) Gathman of Defiance; three sons, Walter (and wife, Joann) Dickman of Gainsboro, Tenn., James (Sandra) Dickman of Napoleon and Kevin 'Joe' (Paula) Dickman of Galien, Mich.; 23 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Nola) Dickman of Holgate.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, Albert, Leroy and Norman; and a sister, Maria, who died in infancy.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. in the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance, with Father Tim Kummerer to officiate.
Mausoleum encryptment will be at Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance County.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Parkinson's Association or the donor's choice.
Sarah B. Stubli
(1909 - 2005)
HUDSON, Mich. - Sarah B. Stubli, 95, of Hudson, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
Born Sept. 27, 1909, at Oak Shade, Ohio, to Flora Faye (Frame) and James "Carey" Riddle, she married Lawrence R. Stubli and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1995.
A Hudson area resident for most of her life, she, along with her husband, was the former owner-operator of Stubli's Dairy Freeze in Hudson and later the Stubli's Frostie Freeze in Addison. She was a former member of the Rollin Baptist Church.
Surviving are her children, Mrs. James (Alice) Collins of Newark, L.R. Stubli Jr. of Hudson, Mrs. Dean (Ruth) Phillips-Edwards of Bryan, Ohio, Robert Stubli of Montpelier, Ohio, and Warren A. (and wife, Kay) Stubli of Naples, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and half-sisters, Hazel Stantz of Montpelier, Ohio and Margaret Brown of Hicksville, Ohio.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Martha Fay and Bernadine Stubli; a sister, three half brothers and four half sisters.
Visitation will be Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home, Hudson.
Funeral services will be Monday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson.
E. Charles Sickmiller
WEST UNITY - E. Charles Sickmiller, 90, of West Unity, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2005, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Bryan.
A World War II Navy veteran, he was a minister in the Free Methodist Church for over 40 years, serving in Norwich and Stanwood, Mich., Redwood City, Glendale, Orville and Chino, Calif. He was a member of the West Unity American Legion Post 669 and attended the West Unity Methodist Church and also the West Unity Free Methodist Church.
Memorial services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the West Unity Methodist Church with Pastors Ruth Ann Scobie and John Wommer to officiate. Arrangements are by Krill Funeral Service, Bryan.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Marie M. Hetz
(1922 - 2005)
HICKSVILLE- Marie M. Hetz, 83, of Hicksville, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at Hickory Creek of Hicksville.
Born Sept. 13, 1922, at New Bavaria, she was the daughter of Mary Jane (Smith) and Joseph A. Hetz.
A member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, she had worked at Quadco in Stryker for 10 years until her retirement.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph (and wife, Pauline) Hetz of Defiance; a sister, Mrs. Edwin (Eleanor) Herman of Edgerton; a sister-in-law, Waneta Hetz of Bryan; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Carroll Hetz.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. in the Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hicksville, with Father Thomas Oedy to officiate. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Hicksville.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church or Hickory Creek of Hicksville.
Mildred 'Tootie' Levien
(1914 - 2005)
LIBERTY CENTER - Mildred "Tootie" Levien, 91, of Liberty Center, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 28, 2005, at Country View Haven.
Born Sept. 3, 1914, at Grand Rapids, to Jennie (Benskin) and Henry Chrobarger, she married John Fredrick Levien I on May 14, 1944, and he preceded her in death on April 17, 1977.
A cosmetologist, she had owned Levien's Beauty Shop in Liberty Center for 30 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Liberty Center, St. Paul Women of the Church, and Elijah Gunn Chapter D.A.R.
Surviving are a son, John Fredrick (and wife, Mary Ann) Levien II of Gulliver, Mich.; two daughters, Pamela Myles of Liberty Center and Carolyn Walters of Bryan; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and a brother. Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in the Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center. The body will lie in state at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Liberty Center, on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the church with Pastor Jeffrey Stone to officiate. Interment will be in Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church's Handicapped Access Fund, Country View Haven or a charity of the donor's choice.
Edith L. Smith
(1903 - 2005)
HICKSVILLE - Edith L. Smith, 102, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio-Bryan.
Born Jan. 9, 1903, at Mark Township, to Ellen (Gilbert) and David Switzer, she married Ray M. Smith on Jan. 9, 1922, and he preceded her in death in 1963.
A lifelong homemaker, she had attended Hicksville High School with the class of 1921. She was a member of the Farmer United Methodist Church, the Farmer Grange, Farmer Get-To-Gether Club and the Farmer and Hicksville American Legion Auxiliaries.
Surviving is a son, Robert Smith of Tupelo, Miss.; a daughter, Irene Rohrbaugh of Delray, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a stepgranddaughter; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were a sister, Minta Allen; a brother, Howard Switzer; and two daughters, Jean Rhodes and Betty Wyse.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Don Foust to officiate. Burial will be at Lost Creek Cemetery, Hicksville.
