Clara Agnes Nighswander
Died: Wednesday, September 24, 2003
Age: 93
DELPHOS — Clara Agnes Nighswander, 93, of Delphos died at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Van Wert Manor.
She was born Aug. 4, 1910, in Putnam County, the daughter of the late Henry and Philomena (Wischmeyer) Beckman.
Ms. Nighswander worked as a cook at Conrad’s Truck Stop for many years.
Survivors include:
Sons — Edward (Patricia) Nighswander of Mendon, Albert (Bernita) Nighswander of Leipsic, Robert (Maxine) Nighswander of Antwerp, Donald Nighswander of Brockway, Pa., and Larry (Beverly) Nighswander of Van Wert
Daughters — Dorthy Wiesehan of Antwerp and Marjorie (Carol) Kemp and Donna (Clifford) Ball, both of Venedocia
Sister — Jenny Johnson of Toledo
Thirty-six grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman and Clem Beckman, and a sister, Marie Hawkins.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Harter & Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where a vigil will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Ruth Marion Wickstrom
Died: Tuesday, September 23, 2003
ST. MARYS — Ruth Marion Wickstrom, beloved wife of Karl E. Wickstrom, of Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003. She and Karl had been married for over 66 years, since June 10, 1937.
Ruth was born in Cleveland in 1913, the daughter of Oscar G. and Anna M. (Hultman) Larson.
Children include Bonnie R. Jones of Van Wert, Dorothy L. (Ron) Dirkse of Holland, Mich., and K. Ted (Pam) Wickstrom of Prescott, Ariz.
Ruth was a loving mother, Head Start teacher, receptionist and minister’s wife. Her hobbies were reading, needlework, avid stamp collecting, music and her family. She was a graduate of Fenger High School and attended North Park College, both in Chicago. She and Karl were both of Scandinavian heritage and enjoyed speaking Swedish to each other throughout their married life. Ruth loved to travel and had visited many parts of the world with her husband and family.
Grandchildren include Chase Wickstrom, Chad Wickstrom, Erika Rescher, Matt Dirkse, Jasen Dirkse and Rachel Armstrong.
Services will be at the discretion of the family at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be given to Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys, OH 45885.
Ruth Lunn Carter
Died: Monday, September 22, 2003
Age: 68
PAYNE — Ruth Lunn Carter, 68, of Payne died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.
She was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Payne, the daughter of the late Frank and Cora (Lewis) Lunn. On Jan. 14, 1956, she married Keith E. Carter, who survives.
Mrs. Carter retired from HWI in New Haven, Ind., and as an aide at Payne Elementary School.

Daughters — Sandra Burke and Christina (Sam) Flynn, both of Payne
Brothers — Henry (Pete) Lunn of Topanga Canyon, Calif., Bill Lunn of Lawty, Fla., Frank Lunn of Albuquerque, N.M., Carl Lunn of Newport, N.C., and Paul Lunn of Kenai, Ala.
Sisters — Mary Jane Fulk of Payne, Margaret McGrath of Prescott, Ariz., and Enid Brooks of the county of Honduras
Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Lunn and Edward "Bud" Lunn.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Lehman Cemetery, Payne.
There will be no visitation.
Slade Funeral Home, Payne, was in charge of arrangements.
Paul Richard Poling
Died: Monday, September 22, 2003
Age: 77
COLUMBIA, Tenn. — Mr. Paul Richard "Dick" Poling, 77, a resident of Columbia, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Maury Regional Hospital.
The Van Wert native was the son of the late William Lewis Poling and Beatrice Reed Poling. He married Helen Hiller, who preceded him in death Jan. 12, 1982.
Mr. Poling, a graduate of Van Wert High School, was a retired farmer, livestock broker and owner of Southern Livestock and Pulaski Stockyards. He was instrumental in starting the Mule Day Sale and Auction on the square. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include four sons, Frank (Holly) Poling, Mike (Teresa) Poling, Jim (Susan Walker) Poling, all of Columbia, and Bob (Debbie) Poling of Pulaski; one brother, Charles Poling of Dunkirk; two sisters, Mary Germann and Linda Hoffman, both of Van Wert; nine grandchildren, Patrick Poling, Christian Poling, Katherine Poling, Amy (Jason) White, Paula (Wesley) King, Alison Poling, Linton Poling, Jay Poling, Reed Poling, and one great-grandson, Jackson White .
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia with Judge Jimmy Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens.
The family will visit with friends today from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Poling, Christian Poling, Jay Poling, Reed Poling, Jason White and Wesley King.
Joyce M. Brooks
Died: Sunday, September 21, 2003
Age: 51
DELPHOS — Joyce M. Brooks, 51, of Delphos died at 6:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born June 30, 1952, in Allen County, the daughter of Norma (Fiedler) Brooks of Delphos and the late Raymond Brooks.
Ms. Brooks was a homemaker and formerly worked at Sarah Jane and Vancrest Health Care Center.
Survivors include:
Sons — Chad Eickholt of Ottoville and Ryan Schock of Delphos
Daughter — Dawn (Stan) Mansfield of Cloverdale
Brother — Dale (Candy) Brooks of Delphos
One grandson, Jonah Mansfield, also survives.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Camryn Mansfield.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Delphos.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 5-7 p.m. today at Harter & Son Funeral Home, Delphos, where a parish wake service will be held at 6:45 p.m. today.
