John D. Fast
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003
Age: 55

DENVILLE, N.J. — John D. Fast, 55, died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville.

He was born in Van Wert, the son of Abraham and Lorriane Fast. He married Denise Flynn, who survives.

Mr. Fast was a tree surgeon and owned and operated Fast Tree Service in Rockaway, N.J., since 1977.

Other survivors include:

Children — Zachary A. and Ashley J., both at home

Brother — Larry Fast of Van Wert

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Fast.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Denville Community Church, 190 Diamond Spring Road, Denville, N.J.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville.

R. W. Ayres M.D.
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003
Age: 84

R.W. Ayres, M.D., 84, of Van Wert died 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital.

He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late E.J. and Florence (Hill) Ayres. On Nov. 8, 1975, he married Phyllis Hoblet, who survives.

Dr. Ayres graduated from Ohio Northern University and Northwestern’s School of Medicine and served his internship at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.

He served as captain in the Medical Attachment, 38th Division, 2nd Army, which was known as the Indian Head Division. That division served in Germany at the time of the Battle of the Bulge. For his service he received two bronze stars, the Combat Infantry medal given to doctors who served in the front lines with the infantry and the Purple Heart.

After the war he started his internship at Akron College before completing, he moved to Arkansas where he was appointed clinical instructor in medicine at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine there getting his degree in internal medicine. In 1952 he moved to Van Wert and started his practice in internal medicine and continued his practice until his retirement in 1984.

In 1969, he donated a month of his time to a Quaker hospital in Kenya, Africa. In 1971, he was instrumental in organizing the first EMS of its kind in Ohio. They were able to transmit an EKG by mobile to the hospital in Van Wert. This was only after giving weeks of training to the members of the Van Wert Fire Dept. He was a life member of BPOE 1197, Van Wert.

Other survivors include a daughter, Ann Ayres of Van Wert; one stepson, Ted (Sandee) Bollenbacher of Rockford; a stepdaughter, Karen (John) Casey of Columbus; one brother, W.B. (Dottie) Ayres MD of Centerville; two stepgrandchildren, Adam and Aaron Bollenbacher, and two nieces, Lynn Ayres and Eileen Sarb.

He was preceded in death by a nephew.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, the Rev. Dr. Edward Jillson officiating. military graveside rites will be conducted by the combined units of the Van Wert American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to The Brumback Library, Van Wert.

Rev. David Kuhtenia
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003
Age: 69

Rev. David Kuhtenia, 69, of Van Wert died unexpectedly at 4:15 pm. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Care, Findlay.

He was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Ignatz and Catherine Kuhtenia. On Oct. 26, 1957, he married Dorothy M. Hall, who survives.

Rev. Kuhtenia served as pastor of the Apostolic Church in Van Wert for 29 years. He was a 1957 graduate of the Apostolic Bible Institute. He served as assistant pastor in Bridgeport, Conn., from 1957-65, pastored in New London, Conn., from 1965-73, served as United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) Eastern District Youth President from 1970-72, including serving as Director of Summer Youth Camps in upstate New York and was presbyter of the Connecticut District of the UPCI from 1971-73. He was director of the UPCI Youth Redemption substance abuse/addiction ministry in Lincoln, Neb., from 1973-74 and assumed the pastorate of the Van Wert Apostolic Church in March 1974.

He served as a presbyter of the Ohio District of the UPCI for the past 25 years, was district representative for the UPCI Harvestime Radio Ministries and a frequent speaker for the Van Wert County Council on Aging. He taught a variety of summer youth camps and was a strong advocate of missions programs, including ministry trips to West Africa and Belarus.

Other survivors include a son, David G. (Michelle) Kuhtenia of Galena; one daughter, Karen Kuhtenia of Dublin; a brother, Samuel Kuhtenia of Inverness, Fla.; two sisters, Anna Kuhtenia and Ruth Kuhtenia, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and one grandchild, Justus Kuhtenia.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alexander, Michael and Daniel, and a sister, Helen Kuhtenia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Apostolic Church in Van Wert. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Calling hours are 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:30 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the Apostolic Church on South Shannon St., Van Wert.

Preferred memorials are to The Apostolic Church Building Fund and the UPCI Literature Production Facility for Russia.

Arrangements were handled by Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Frances Elizabeth McVay
Died: Friday, August 08, 2003
Age: 88

Frances Elizabeth McVay, 88, of Van Wert died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Greenville, the daughter of the late John Earl and Maude Elizabeth (Brumbaugh) Kline. On May 25, 1946, she married Clarence Earl McVay, who preceded her in death in September 1975.

Mrs. McVay was a homemaker. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Van Wert, Van Wert Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star and ADO Sorority, she was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. (Jerry) McVay Worthington of Van Wert and Susan E. McVay of Long Beach, Calif.; a son, John D. McVay of Van Wert; one sister, Louise Witwer of Greenville, and three stepgranddaughters, Jesicca, Jacqueline and Angelique Worthington.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and Margaret Kline.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Edward W. Jillson officiating. Burial will be in Greenville Union Cemetery, Greenville.

Calling will be all day today at her residence, 521 N.  Jefferson St., Van Wert.

Arrangements were handled by Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Troy D. Reindel
Died: Friday, August 08, 2003
Age: 15

DELPHOS — Troy D. Reindel, 15, of Delphos died early Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, on Converse-Roselm Road.

He was born July 28, 1988, in Lima, the son of Timothy and Tamie (Harpster) Reindel, who survive in Delphos.

Troy was going to be a freshman at St. John High School. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos and the St. John’s football team. He was active in 4-H, loved showing cattle and looking forward to joining FFA.

Other survivors include a sister, Allison Carol Reindel at home; two brothers, Anthony Scott Reindel and Aaron Timothy Reindel, both at home; his godparents, Deb Reindel and Scott Harpster; grandparents, Melvin and Jane Reindel of Delphos and Pam Harpster of Columbus; great-grandparents, Martha Flanagan of Delphos, Harold and Lucille Harpster of Delphos and Ned and Mary Lou Krugh of Ohio City, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Danny Harpster and Carol Flanagan Harpster.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Delphos.

Calling hours are 6-9 p.m. today and 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Harter & Son Funeral Home, Delphos.

Preferred memorials are 4-H or St. John’s Scholarship Fund.

Lois Joyce Krall
Died: Thursday, August 07, 2003
Age: 61

WILLSHIRE — Lois Joyce Krall, 61, formerly of Willshire, now of Tucson, Ariz., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Salem, Ore. She had also lived in San Diego and Florida.

She was born July 6, 1942, in Rockford, the daughter of the late Guy H. and Esther Lavina (Grauberger) Krall.

Ms. Krall had worked at International Harvester in Fort Wayne, Ind., and General Dynamics in San Diego, Calif. She had since been working as a care provider.

Survivors include:

Brothers — Bernard Krall and Farrel (Sharon) Krall, both of Willshire, Duane (Norma) Krall of New Haven, Ind., and Donald Krall of Waynesdale, Ind.

Sisters — Eileen Kraner and Mary Ann (Dean) Bollenbacher, both of Celina, and Evelyn Frank of Willshire

Nieces and nephews also survive.

Private family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Chattanooga, the Rev. Tom Aerheit officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. Friday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford.
