Jane E. Engel
Died: Sunday, July 13, 2003
Age: 81

MIDDLE POINT — Jane E. Engel, 81, of rural Middle Point died at 6:35 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Stockbridge, Mich., the daughter of the late of Glen and Lydia (Van Schoik) Newman. On Aug. 9, 1947, she married Robert Engel, who survives.

Mrs. Engel was a homemaker and also worked as a cook for Lincolnview Schools. A member of the Middle Point United Methodist Church, she served as a WAVE during World War II, enjoyed music and played the organ for the church and was a member of the Grange and Farm Bureau.

Other survivors include her children, David (Rose Mary) Engel of Asheboro, N.C., and Denise (John) Cramer of Middle Point; a sister, Madge Rose of Columbus; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Evans, and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, the Rev. Cindy Lumm officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point, with military graveside rites conducted by the Van Wert American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.

Calling hours are 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the church or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Opal May Huffman
Died: Sunday, July 13, 2003
Age: 93

ROCKFORD — Opal May Huffman, 93, of Rockford died at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Colonial Nursing Center, Rockford.

She was born May 25, 1910, in Rockford, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Merle (Rush) Snyder. In 1926, she married Darrell Huffman, who preceded her in death in March 1972.

Mrs. Huffman was an LPN at the former Smith Nursing Home in Rockford and later at Shane Hill Nursing Home, Rockford.

Survivors include:

Son — Dan (Bonnie) Huffman of Jacksonville, Fla.

Sisters — Bessie Fahncke of Celina and Bonita (Dean) Deitsch of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Two granddaughters, Karie (Mike) Stophel and Amy Huffman of Jacksonville, Fla., also survive.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Dee, Lowell, Verl and Darlene Snyder, and four sisters, Arberdene Fickert, Lela Felver, Lena Cook and Jessie Sapp.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, the Rev. Clifford Bollenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour prior to service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jerry B. Grubaugh
Died: Sunday, July 13, 2003
Age: 62

Jerry B. Grubaugh, 62, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

Arrangements are pending at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Orville K. Stetler
Died: Thursday, August 28, 2003
Age: 65

Orville K. Stetler, 65, of Van Wert died at 7:56 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.

He was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Van Wert, the son of the late Lee Stetler and LuLu (Burk) Stetler Roberts. On Nov. 10, 1959, he married Sherry Englehardt, who survives.

Mr. Stetler was a retired chef.

Other survivors include:

Son — Jonathon Stetler of Clinton Township, Michigan

Daughter — Debbieleigh Williams of El Marige, Calif.

Sister — Carol Hart

Brothers — Dale and Doyle Stetler

Eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, at a time to be announced.

There will be no visitation.

Martha J. Lybarger
Died: Wednesday, August 27, 2003
Age: 70

Martha J. Lybarger, 70, of Van Wert died at 11:47 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

She was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Edwin and Margaret (Wallace) Zinn. On July 25, 1959, in Van Wert, she married Robert O. Lybarger, who survives.

Mrs. Lybarger worked as a bookkeeper for Alexander & Bebout Construction, Van Wert, for 20 years. She had previously worked for the old Balyeat Coal Yard, Van Wert. A member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, Van Wert, she was also a member of United Methodist Women and a former Camp Fire leader.

Other survivors include:

Sons — Tom (Wendy) Lybarger of Reynoldsburg and Larry Lybarger of Palm City, Fla.

Daughters — Suzanne (Joe) Wegmiller of Marysville and Nancy (Don) Fiegel of New Knoxville

Seven grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Zinn, and an infant sister, Juanita Zinn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Richard Birk officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today and an hour prior to service Saturday at the funeral home.

Rev. Walter A. Miller
Died: Wednesday, August 27, 2003
Age: 54

OTTOVILLE — Rev. Walter A. Miller, 54, of Ottoville, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at his residence.

He was born June 15, 1949, in Van Wert, the son of the late George and Gertrude (Fischer) Miller. On Sept. 8, 1973, he married Jill Ann Weeden, in Delphos, and she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Jessica Miller of Cleveland, Amanda Miller and her daughter (a granddaughter) Rylee Byrne, at home, and Elizabeth Miller at home; siblings, Kenneth (Dorothy) Miller of Ottoville, Elizabeth Knott of Columbus Grove, June (Don) Korte of Delphos, Ruth Schuller of Ottawa and Vivian (Bob) Schimmoeller of Oak Harbor.

On May 13, 1989, Walt was ordained a deacon in the Toledo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. He served and was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Ottoville, and was a member of its Holy Name Society. He was drafted and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

On returning home, he rejoined Miller Bros. Clay Works of Ottoville, his family’s business where he worked for 26 years. With his wife, Jill, he opened and operated the Video Connection in Van Wert for eight years.

In 1988, he began volunteering at St. Rita’s Medical Center and went on staff as a chaplain in 1991. At present, he served as the director of Pastoral & Patient Relations at the Medical Center.

He was a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and Fort Jennings American Legion Post 715.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, Rev. Tony Borgia officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ottoville, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Jennings American Legion.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Orians Funeral Home, Ottoville, where a parish wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday. An American Legion memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita’s Medical Center, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Dr. Edgar P. Sprunger
Died: Wednesday, August 27, 2003
Age: 86

BERNE, Ind. — Dr. Edgar P. Sprunger, 86, of Berne, died at 11:24 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Adams County Memorial Hospital, Decatur, Ind.

He was born Aug. 17, 1917, in Adams County, the son of the late Robert L. and Rhoda (Liechty) Sprunger. On Nov. 24, 1948, in Berne, he married Marguerite Michaud, who survives.

Dr. Sprunger was a retired dentist who practiced in Berne from 1948-82. He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served as a captain.

Other survivors include:

Sons — Patrick Sprunger and Reed G. Sprunger, both of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Daughters — Andrea (Rev. Barry) McCune of Van Wert and Lisa (Jeff) Nickel of Corn, Okla.

Brothers — Donald Sprunger, Eugene Sprunger, and Roy Sprunger, all of Berne, and the Rev. Sam Sprunger of Hammond, Ind.

Sister — Betty (Dr. James) Gurley of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Eight grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. John Sprunger and Robert Lavere Sprunger.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. (Indiana time) Saturday at West Missionary Church in rural Berne, the Rev. Keith Rupp officiating. Burial will be in MRE Cemetery, Berne.

Calling hours are 3-8 p.m. (Indiana time) Friday at Swiss Village Chapel, Berne, and an hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
