Roy S. Hartman
Died: Tuesday, September 16, 2003
Age: 97

Roy S. Hartman, 97, of Van Wert died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.

He was born Oct. 26, 1905, in Sherman, the son of the late Newton Wilbur and Mattie May (Shaffer) Hartman. On April 18, 1936, in Westlake, he married Laura Ann Teubner, who preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1999.

Mr. Hartman retired from farming in the Wadsworth, Ohio, area. He was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Roy Allen (Susan) Hartman of College Station, Texas ; two daughters, Joan Ann Hartman and Marilyn (Robert) Brandt, both of Van Wert; one sister, Ellen Burdett of Sharon Center; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Rick Ebb officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Memorial Park, Lexington, Ohio.

Calling hours are 9:30 a.m. to time of service Monday at the church.

Preferred memorials are The Lutheran Hour and St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

Arrangements were handled by Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Marvel L. Yoh Agler
Died: Tuesday, September 16, 2003
Age: 85

Marvel L. Yoh Agler, 85, of Van Wert, formerly of Convoy, died at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Oakwood Village, Springfield.

She was born Jan. 24, 1918, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late John B. and Mattie (Hunter) Basil. In 1941, she married Harold Yoh, who preceded her in death in 1946. On June 28, 1952, she married Elmer R. Agler, who preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1995.

Mrs. Agler was a homemaker and had also worked at the old Van Wert County Hospital and the National Seal Corp. in Van Wert. She was a member of Countryside Chapel United Methodist Church, Convoy, Church Women United of Van Wert County and the Convoy Grange.

Survivors include two daughters, Ardith (Larry O.) Howell of Rockford, Ohio, Ann (Richard) Combs of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Phil E. Agler of Houston, Texas ; two stepsons, Jerry F. (Sharon) Agler of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Dallas E. (Leigh) Agler of Van Wert; one stepdaughter, Rita (Les) Stewart of Springfield; two sisters, Mildred Basil and Betty (Dudley) Stetler, both of Van Wert; eight grandchildren, Teresa Lichtensteiger, Mike Pancake, Rob Agler, Jeff Howell, Greg Agler, Kim Rapking, Dave Stewart, Julie Agler; one stepgrandchild, Aaron Combs, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Gary, and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Blue Creek Cemetery, Haviland. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Countryside Chapel United Methodist Church, Convoy, the Rev. Wayne Karges officiating.

Preferred memorials are the church or donor’s choice.

Arrangements were handled by Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Eugene Millard Smith
Died: Tuesday, September 16, 2003
Age: 72

Eugene Millard Smith, 72, of rural Van Wert died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at 9120 Richey Road, Van Wert.

He was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Montpelier, the son of the late Dale Millard and Rachel Hope (Beek) Smith. On June 23, 1984, in Van Wert, he married Harriet B. Bixel, who survives.

Mr. Smith retired from General Dynamics Land Systems, Lima, in November 1993. A 1949 graduate of Van Wert High School, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He had attended Ebenezer Mennonite Church, Lima Mennonite Church and Calvary Evangelical Church.

Other survivors include three brothers, Dale L. Smith of Chula Vista, Calif., and Franklin D. (Donna) Smith and Frederick W. (Clara) Smith, both of Van Wert; a sister, Ima R. (Harold) Putman of Van Wert, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle M. Smith, and one sister, Iris Hope Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Raymond E. Feeck of Calvary Evangelical Church and the Rev. Charles E. Warren of Ebenezer Mennonite Church officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Convoy, with military graveside services conducted by the combined Isaac Van Wert Post 178, American Legion, and Robert G. Longwell Post 5803, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday and one hour ahead of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Community Health Professionals-Hospice, Calvary Evangelical Church, Ebenezer Mennonite Church or Lima Mennonite Church.

Imogene L. Copenhaver
Died: Monday, September 15, 2003
Age: 93

PAYNE — Imogene L. Copenhaver, 93, at Payne died at 10:08 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home, Payne.

She was born July 14, 1910, in Payne, the daughter of the late Don and Myrtle Bloom (Overmyer) Copenhaver.

Miss Copenhaver worked many years at Collis Market, Strayer’s IGA and Payne Dime Store, all of Payne.

Survivors include:

Sister — Fordyce Collis of Payne

A private graveside service will be held at Lehman Cemetery, Payne, the Rev. Joseph Allen officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Slade Funeral Home, Payne, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy A. Book
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 84

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Dorothy A. Book, 84, of Fort Wayne died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Kingston Care.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (Indiana time) Thursday at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, Fort Wayne. Burial will be at Concordia Gardens Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. (Indiana time) Wednesday at the funeral home.

Robert L. Wooton
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 84

PAULDING — Robert L. Wooton, 84, died at 9:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Hawthorn Court Nursing Home, Paulding.

He was born June 22, 1919, in Payne, the son of the late Clarence V. and Reva G. (Edwards) Wooten. On Sept. 23, 1939, in Evansport, he married Jennie E. Frank, who survives in Paulding.

Mr. Wooton was a journeyman electrician for GM Powertrain, Defiance, for 29 years, retiring in 1977. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal.

Other survivors include:

Sons — Dale (Becky) Wooton of Lakemore, Robert (Kim) Wooton of Terra Haute, Ohio, and Mark (Joan) Wooton of Paulding

Daughters — Pam (Jim) Adamski of Aurora, Ill., and Tamara (Gary) Boroff of Paulding

Daughter-in-law — Patsy Jo Wooton of Dixon

Sister — Romona Adams of Paulding

Twelve grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday at First Christian Church, Paulding, the Revs. Susan M.  Taylor and Tim Hauenstein officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Paulding, with military graveside rites conducted by Paulding Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 587.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. (EDT) today at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and an hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
