Wesley A. Carpenter 12/24/2004

Wesley A. Carpenter, age 91, of County Road 170, Marengo died Friday Dec. 24, 2004 in the Woodside Village Care Center. He was born Nov. 17, 1913 in Cardington to the late Chester and Dorothy (Brenizer) Carpenter.

Wesley was a 1933 graduate of Cardington High School and was retired from H.P.M. where he had worked as an erector. He was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church and the H.P.M. retirees group.

On March 16, 1941 in Marietta, OH, Wesley married the former Edith M. Ulrey and she survives. Additional survivors include two daughters; Judith Bowers of Cardington and Beverly Carpenter of Marengo; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Eunice Klinefelter of Cardington and two brothers, Wayne Carpenter of Mt. Gilead and Frank Carpenter of  Oklahoma.

In addition to his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by three brothers Donald, Harry, and Lloyd Carpenter.

Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 28 at the Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington from 10:00 AM until Noon. The funeral service will begin at Noon and will be officiated by Pastors Brian Mosher and Bill Kuhn. The burial will be in the Fulton Cemetery.

Kevin J Kennedy 12/24/2004

Kevin J Kennedy, age 37, of East North Street in Mt Gilead died December 24, 2004. He was born in Chicopee, MA on June 15, 1967 to William J. Kennedy of Florida and Patricia Ann (Scofield) Kennedy of Greencastle, PA.

Kevin worked as a trim carpenter for Gerling and Associates in Sunbury. He attended the Church of the Sacred Hearts in Mt. Gilead. Kevin enjoyed skiing, camping and other outdoor activities.

Survivors also include his son, Gavin Kennedy of Gettysburg, PA; a sister, Heather Kennedy, and a brother, Ronnie Parsons, both of Green Castle, PA, a half-sister in Arizona; his fiancée, Donna Kinley of Mt. Gilead, and her children Dalton, Logan and Robert all at home.

Friends may call Friday, December 31, 2004 from 11AM until noon at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where funeral services will be held at noon.

Willis Ray Long 12/22/2004

Willis Ray Long, age 74, of South Marion Street in Cardington, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 in the emergency room at Morrow County Hospital. He was born August 30, 1930 in Edison, Ohio to the late Clarence A. and Rosetta (Terry) Long.

He was a 1949 graduate of Cardington High School and a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Windfall). Willis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from June 1949 to February of 1953. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Vaughan-Jenkins Post # 97. Willis worked as a construction contracting supervisor in Marion for 35 years and currently worked the past 12 years with the Cardington Lincoln School district as a custodial utility person.

On August 19, 1955 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Marion, he married the former Evelyn Fricke and she survives in Cardington.

Survivors also include 2 sons and their wives, Kevin and Cynthia Long and Alan and Lynn Long all of Cardington; grandchildren, Adam and Ryan Long of Mt. Vernon and Ethan Long and Megan Long of Cardington; a brother, Terry Long of Findlay, and a sister and her husband, Wilma and Art Kinsell of Cardington.

In addition to his parents, Willis was preceded in death by a brother, Foster Long.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington, Sunday, December 26, 2004 from 5-8PM. Funeral services will be held at 1PM Monday, December 27, 2004 at the funeral home with Pastor Donald Pletcher officiating. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery with military honors.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked consider either St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Cardington Emergency Squad in care of Gompf Funeral Home.

Harry E. Wertz 12/22/2004

Harry E. Wertz, age 80, of Township Road 121, Mount Gilead died Wednesday Dec. 22, 2004 in the Woodside Village Care Center after an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 12, 1924 in Mt. Gilead to the late Ray and Myrtle (Baughman) Wertz.

Harry was a graduate of the Blue Jay School. He had worked at Tecumseh Products for 32 years before retiring and was also a retired farmer. He was a member of the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church

In 1944 Harry married the former Bertha Lyle and she survives. Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Irma Wertz and Richard and Joyce Wertz; grandchildren, Marty (Michelle) Wertz, Becky (Dave) Gleason, Trisha (Mark) Tuggle, and Jennifer Wertz. They also raised four step-grandchildren; Lisa, Mike, Darrell, and Carla Spencer. Great-grandchildren include Alisha, Katlyn, Ethan, Macayla, Micah, Noah, and Lachelle.

Friends may call Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where the funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday. Mary Lou Gompf and Mark Tuggle will officiate and the burial will be in the Bryn Zion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County, P.O. Box 86, Mt. Gilead, OH. 43338.

Betty M. Breece Shults 12/16/2004

Betty M. Breece, age 83, formerly of Railroad Street in Cardington died Thursday morning December 16, 2004 at Altercare of Bucyrus. She was born on January 22,1921 in Cardington to the late Charles S. and Ivah D. (Marshall) Haycook.

Betty was a 1939 graduate of Cardington High School and had worked as a clerk at the Sterling store for 10 years and had been an active Avon sales associate for over 25 years. She was a member of the Cardington First United Methodist Church where she had been active in the Women's circle and had taught Sunday school for 15 years. She also belonged to the Jenkins-Vaughan American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 97.

In 1940, Betty married Robert W. Breece and he preceded her in death on October 2, 1974. She married Charles W. Shults on April 14, 1989 in Cardington and he also preceded her in death on October 26, 1994.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert 'Bob' and Bobbie Breece of Cardington; one grandson, Kyle Breece of Cardington, and one brother, Sanford 'Sandy' Haycook of Holmesville, OH.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Betty was also preceded in death by three brothers, Maurice, Kenneth and Cecil Haycook and two sisters, Ethel Wells and Opal Long.

Friends may call Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Cardington First United Methodist Church from 10 to 11AM where the funeral service will be held at 11AM. Pastor John  Jackson will officiate and burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider either First United Methodist Church of Cardington Emergency Squad in care of the funeral home.

Wilbert G. (Bill) Gattshall 12/15/2004

Wilbert G. (Bill) Gattshall, age 95, of Marion Mount Gilead Road, Caledonia died early Wednesday morning, December 15, 2004 at his residence. He was born July 27, 1909 in Westfield Township, Morrow County to the late John F. and Sophia H. (Matthes) Gattshall.

Bill worked as a machinist at Huber Manufacturing in Marion for 33 years. He was a member of the Claridon Methodist Church. At one time he was a Marion County Bee Inspector. He was a life member and helped to found the Ohio Gun Collectors Association . In addition Bill loved working on clocks and had a bee apiary from the time he was 9 years old.

On July 27, 1935 at Mary Sipe's Parsonage he married the former Helen Roberta McPeek and she survives in Caledonia.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son and daughter in law, Dave and Lillian Gattshall of Prospect; grandchildren, Roger and June Gattshall of Marion, Mark Gattshall of Prospect and Stuart and Sherri Gattshall of Green Camp; and 5 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Wilbert was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Harold, Walter and Gerald Gattshall and a sister Alma Edgington.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington Friday, December 17, 2004 from 5-8PM where the funeral service will be held Saturday December 18, 2004 at 10AM. John Grimm will officiate and burial will follow in Claridon Cemetery.
