Joy Berlyn Wright Stemen
Died: Friday, August 29, 2003
Age: 89

CONVOY — Joy Berlyn Wright Stemen, 89 years, of Convoy, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, after a period of declining health. For the past year, she had resided at Walnut Hills Nursing Home in Walnut Creek, Ohio.

Joy was born April 30, 1914, in Grover Hill, Ohio, to O.W. (Tim) and Laura Agnes (Sutton) Wright. She married H. Kenneth Stemen on Sept. 18, 1934 and they celebrated 50 years together before his death on March 7, 1985.

Joy loved her family, her church and music. She began playing piano for silent movies at the age of 13. She was a member of the Convoy United Methodist Church where she served as pipe organist for over 50 years. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Convoy American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by three children, K. Rodney Stemen of Westlake, Ohio, Frances (Abe) Mast of Millersburg and Gary L. (Sue) Stemen of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a brother, Harold B. (Shirley) Wright of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, M. Athene Bracken, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Stemen.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Aug. 30 from 6-8 p.m. at Gearhart, Mack & Jurczyk Funeral Home in Convoy. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. at Convoy United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Middle Creek Cemetery, Grover Hill, Ohio. Rev. Greg Leigh will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Convoy United Methodist Church, Convoy, Ohio.

A. Rex Adams
Died: Friday, August 29, 2003
Age: 82

PAULDING — A. Rex Adams, 82, died at 8:55 p.m. (EDT) Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at his son’s residence following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Oakwood, the son of the late William and Minnie (Grimes) Adams. On Aug. 25, 1951, he married Lavoon Naomi Klingler, who preceded him in death on March 29, 1991.

Mr. Adams was employed at Grizzly Manufacturing, Paulding from 1948 until his retirement in 1980. He was housekeeper for the Paulding County Hospital until retiring in 1985. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant.

Survivors include:

Sons — Robert R. (JoAnn) Perl of Paulding and Gail (Judy) J. Perl of Van Wert

Brother — Curtis Adams of Paulding

Sisters — Fanny May (Alvin) Long of Oakwood and Reva Hammon of Jewell

Eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Nancy Perl and Rose Ellen Ross and a great-grandson, Josh Perl

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Paulding, the Rev. Kenneth Van Loon officiating.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. (EDT) today at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Michael Jon Cunningham
Died: Friday, August 29, 2003
Age: 51

DEFIANCE — Michael Jon Cunningham, 51, died at 1:12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind., shortly after admission as the result of an ATV accident in Paulding County Thursday evening, Aug. 28, 2003.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1952, in Defiance, the son of Norma I. (Robnolte) Cunningham of Defiance and the late Robert E. Cunningham. On Feb. 3, 1973, at Rose Hill Church of God in Paulding, he married Jean Ann Wollum, who survives in Defiance.

Mr. Cunningham was a 1970 graduate of Oakwood High School and a 1972 graduate of Northwestern Business College of Lima. Early in his career he was a securities broker for the Ohio Company of Columbus. He was a sales representative for Palmer-Donavin Manufacturing Company of Delphos and Columbus, retiring in 2000 after 25 years of service. He was presently the managing general for Cunningham FLP of Defiance. He has found life’s answers, and is now at peace in the arms of God.

Other survivors include a daughter, Kerianne Cunningham of Southworth, Wash., and one son, Ryan P. (Melissa) Cunningham of Defiance.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday at Rose Hill Church of God, Paulding, the Rev. Samuel D. Wollum officiating. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Brown Township, Paulding County.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. Tuesday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and an hour prior to service Wednesday at the church.

Preferred memorial is Oakwood EMS.

Mary M. Mueller
Died: Thursday, August 28, 2003
Age: 85

Mary M. Mueller, 85, of Van Wert died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital.

She was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Mercer County, the daughter of the late Rev. Clayton Manley and Sarah Elizabeth (Reynolds) Proffitt. On Feb. 2, 1942, she married Albert Lewis Mueller, who preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1982.

Mrs. Mueller was a homemaker.

Survivors include:

Daughters — Judi (Ralph) Richardson of Venedocia, M. Jean Mueller of Cincinnati and Dixie M. (Jack) Kuenning of St. Marys Son — John A. (Kay) Mueller of St. Marys

Sister — Edith (George) Walker of Rockford

Brother — Billy (Louise) Proffitt of Van Wert

Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Benny Clayton Mueller, a sister, Pauline Clark, and three brothers, N.D. "Dave", Rev. Carl and Glenn Proffitt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. Burial is to follow in the Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Frieda D. Dix
Died: Tuesday, June 03, 2003

PAULDING — Frieda D. Dix of Paulding died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was born in Payne, the daughter of the late Charles and Louise (Schieber) May. On Aug. 1, 1958, she married Clyde Dix, who survives.

Mrs. Dix was a homemaker.

Other survivors include:

Daughters — Dorothy M. Moreno, Beverly D. Apple and April R. Dix, all of Paulding, and Michelle R. A. Thompson of Ayersville

Sons — Larry M. Dix of Paulding and Charles L. Dix of Stryker.

Fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Donna Zielke, Delta Wallen, Beulah May, Gladys May and Stella Boyd, three brothers, Harry, Charles and Paul, and a grandchild, Anthony Dix.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (EDT) Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Paulding, the Rev. Mary Beth Smith-Webb officiating. Burial will be in Lehman Cemetery, Payne

Calling hours are after 4 p.m. (EDT) Thursday at Slade Funeral Home, Payne.

George Meeks Jr
Died: Monday, June 02, 2003
Age: 80

DELPHOS — George Meeks Jr., 80, of Clarendon Township, formerly of Delphos, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Hillsdale Community Health Center, Litchfield, Mich.

He was born June 28, 1922, in Delphos, the son of the late George and Lucinda May (Johnson) Meeks. He married Pauline B. DeWitt, who preceded him in death in 1984.

Mr. Meeks, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was employed as a bus driver in Lima.

Survivors include:

Sons — Gary (Brenda) Meeks and Lonnie Meeks, both of Lima, and George Meeks of Tennessee

Daughters — Sally (Herman) Marshall of Tekonsha, Mich., and Bonnie Meeks of Delphos

Sisters — Marie Miller and Mary K. Closson, both of Delphos

Brother — Benny Meeks of Middle Point

Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan Meeks.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Harter & Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, the Rev. David Howell officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove cemetery with military graverites conducted by Delphos Veterans Council.

Calling hours were 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
