Maxine D. Grubaugh
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 82

DAVIS, Calif. — Maxine D. Grubaugh, 82, died at her Davis, Calif., home on July 1, 2003. She had been active in church and community affairs, then waged a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Maxine was born in Dallas, Texas, on Christmas Eve, 1920, to Harry and Cornelia (Upchurch) Douglas.

In 1946, she married Col. Glover P. Grubaugh, a native of Union Township, Van Wert County. During his 30 year United States Air Force career they lived in Ohio, Texas, the Philippines, Washington, D.C., Japan and California.

Maxine is survived by her husband and three children, Melissa, Bill (Claudia) Grubaugh, Vicki (Don) Miller and grandchildren, Elena and Joe Miller, all live in northern California, one sister, Gloria George of Alexandria, Va. Maxine’s in-laws are Nedra (Kenneth) Altier, Betheen and Beryl (Joan) Grubaugh of Ohio and Col. Kenneth (Lou Ellen) Grubaugh of Davis, Calif.

Col. Boyd Lee Grubaugh died in 1958. His widow, Isabel, and three children survive.

Graveside services were held July 3, 2003, in Davis, Calif.

Frank E. Farquhar Sr.
Died: Friday, October 10, 2003
Age: 72

PAULDING — Frank E. Farquhar Sr., 72, died at 10:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born July 24, 1931, in Leipsic, the son of the late Frank E. and Nellie (Feller) Farquhar. On Jan. 19, 1952, he married Edith "Toot" Bland, who preceded him in death on March 25, 2000.

He retired from La Farge Corp. in Paulding in 1998 after 38 years.

Survivors include:

Sons — Frank E. (Diane) Farquhar, Randy (Barbara) Farquhar, Mike Farquhar and Bruce (Diane) Farquhar, all of Paulding

Daughter — Sherri (Randy) Ruder of Paulding

Sister — Ruth Brooks of Leipsic

Seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter also survive.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Burger, and a grandson, Frank E. Farquhar III.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EDT) Thursday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. (EDT) Wednesday and 8 a.m. to time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Madeline E. Sprow
Died: Friday, October 10, 2003
Age: 74

DEFIANCE — Madeline E. Sprow, 74, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Dallas Lamb Foundation, Payne.

She was born May 12, 1929, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late Robert H. and Erma J. (Buyer) Vandenbroucke. On Sept. 10, 1946, she married Ernest L. (Von) Sprow, who preceded her in death on March 29, 1988.

Mrs. Sprow was formerly employed as an inspector for Dana Weatherhead in Antwerp.

Survivors include:

Sisters — Mary (Ralph) Hanenkratt of Paulding and Emily (Ronald) Guingrich of Leo, Ind.

Nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. (EDT) today and 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. A wake service will be held at 8 p.m. (EDT) today at the funeral home.

Judith A. Butler
Died: Friday, October 10, 2003

DECATUR, Ind. — Judith A. Butler, 63, of Decatur died at 5:50 p.m. (Indiana time) Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at her residence. She had been ill since December 2002.

She was born Dec. 22, 1939, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the daughter of the late Harlo T. and Marian F. Burke. On May 3, 1958, in Decatur, she married Joseph E. Butler, who survives.

Mrs. Butler owned and operated along with her husband Joe J. and J. Butler in Willshire since October 1985. She was active in the Adams Central Band Boosters for the past 5 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine L. Butler and Stacey L. Butler, both of rural Decatur; a son, Jeffrey L. Butler of rural Decatur; one brother, Monty D. Miller of rural Decatur; nine grandchildren, and an honorary grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Amy Lou Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. (Indiana time) Wednesday at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, the Rev. Roy Schwartz officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.

Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. (Indiana time) today and 1-8 p.m. (Indiana time) Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorial is Leader Dogs for the Blind Foundation.

Ruth M. Tossey
Died: Friday, October 10, 2003
Age: 99

Ruth M. Tossey, 99, of Van Wert died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born July 1, 1904, in Ridge Township, Van Wert County, the daughter of the late John and Laurabell (Dolby) Slattery. She married Roger Tossey, who preceded her in death in 1979.

Mrs. Tossey taught school in the Ridge-Lincolnview School District, retiring in 1964. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was also a member of the Van Wert Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary and Lamba Delta Omega Society.

Survivors include a sister, Helen (William) Wise of Ohio City and 17 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Slattery, and three sisters, Grace (Hillary) Kimmet, Mildred (Doyle) Tribolet and Pauline (Dale) Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Charles Obinwa officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.

Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Monday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, with a parish vigil service at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Preferred memorial is St. Mary’s Catholic School, Van Wert.

Mabel L. Bland
Died: Thursday, October 09, 2003
Age: 83

HAVILAND — Mabel L. Bland, 83, died at 5:25 p.m. (EDT) Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.

She was born May 11, 1920, in Paulding County, the daughter of the late Myers and Ethel (Myers) Saxton. On Aug. 19, 1937, she married Cletus Bland, who preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1973.

Mrs. Bland was a retired school bus driver for Wayne Trace Schools, retiring in 1985 after 15 years of service.

Survivors include:

Sons — Glenn (Beverly) Bland of Defiance, Lester (Patricia) Bland of Paulding, Robert E. Bland of Antwerp, Harry (Pam) Bland of Hicksville and Gregory (Rita) Bland of Scott

Daughters — Catherine (Jerry) Matson of Oakwood, Rae (Charles) Holtsberry of Paulding, Mary (Larry) Greathouse of Grover Hill and Wilma Bland of Haviland

Sisters — Doris Baksa of Paulding and Lois Bullinger of Fort Jennings

Nineteen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Saxton, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday at Grover Hill Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Jonathan L. Hoagland officiating. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery, Paulding.

Calling hours are 2:30-9 p.m. (EDT) Monday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Charles Barker
Died: Wednesday, October 08, 2003
Age: 87

MENDON — Charles Barker, 87, of rural Mendon died at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct., 8, 2003, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville.

He was born May 13, 1916, in Dixon, the son of the late Ferd and Ida (Clayton) Barker. On March 18, 1943, he married Clora Genevra Mohler, who survives.

Mr. Barker was a retired farmer who had also worked for the state and county highway departments at Van Wert and the Tully Township road department.

Other survivors include:

Daughter — Elaine (Jerry) Steiner of Mendon

Sister-in-law — Helen Barker of Ossian, Ind.

Two granddaughters, Holly (Andy) Smith and Valerie (Jim) Scatena, three great-grandsons, Dalton Smith, Logan Smith and Vincent Scatena, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Earl, Forrest, Dwight, Lester, Chester and Floyd Barker, and one sister, Ruth Barker.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Mendon, the Rev. Raymond E. Feeck of Calvary Evangelical Church, Van Wert, officiating. Burial will be in Mercer Memory Gardens, Celina.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Max Freeman Dysert
Died: Wednesday, October 08, 2003
Age: 83

PAULDING — Max Freeman Dysert, 83, died at 6:30 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home, Payne.

He was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Holgate, the son of the late Fred and Bess (Smalley) Dysert.

Mr. Dysert was formerly employed by Cadillac Gauge Company, Detroit, Mich., retiring in 1990. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include:

Sister — Norma (Forest) Gutmann of Beavercreek

Brother-in-law — Norm Rulman of Paulding

Four nephews and many great nephews and nieces also survive.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dole Dysert, and a sister, Florence Rulman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, the Rev. Susan  Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding, with military graveside services by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 587.

Calling hours will be 4-8 p.m. (EDT) Sunday and 8 a.m. to time of service Monday at the funeral home.
