Emmanuel M McHugh

Emmanuel M. McHugh, 87, of Van Wert died at 4:11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital.
He was born April 25, 1915, in Reynolds, Ind., the son of the late Thomas and Emma (Holcomb) McHugh. On Nov. 22, 1939, in Van Wert, he married Helen M. Davis, who survives.
Mr. McHugh retired in 1985 after 21 years as a caretaker at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. He also delivered the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette Sunday edition for 32 years and the Van Wert Times-Bulletin for six years.

One grandson, Christopher Wood, survives in Van Wert.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mearl McHugh, five brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home.
DELHPOS - Richard L Eggeman
Died: Wednesday, October 2, 2002
Age: 43
DELHPOS - Richard L. Eggeman, 43, of Delphos died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 16, 1959, in Delphos, the son of Ronald and LaDonna (Rode) Eggeman, who survive in Delphos.

Brothers - Russell (Natalie) Eggeman of Fort Wayne, Ind., Ronald (Laura) Eggeman of Goshen, Ind.
Paternal grandmother - Esther Eggeman of Ottoville
Ten nieces and nephews and one great-nephew also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Harter & Son Funeral Home, Delphos, the Rev. David Howell officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Calling hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
PAULDING - Lowell E Tope
Died: Wednesday, October 2, 2002
Age: 74
PAULDING -- Lowell E. Tope, 74, died at 2:57 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the emergency room of Van Wert County Hospital.
He was born Dec. 12, 1927, in Sherwood, the son of the late Edward L. and Gladys (Carlisle) Tope. On Dec. 10, 1950, in Kendallville, Ind., he married Margaret Menzel of Paulding.
Mr. Tope was a mechanic and bus driver for the Paulding Exempted Village Schools for 25 years, retiring in 2000. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, former owner/operator of the Marathon Gas Station bulk distributor, the Paulding Theatre and Tope True Value Store, all in Paulding, and former manager of G.C. Murphy & Co. in Kendallville, Ind., and Defiance.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Lonnie E. Tope, and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Den Herder Funeral Home, the Rev. Joseph Allen officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
NEW HAVEN
Died: Friday, November 30, 2001
NEW HAVEN, Ind. - Services were held Thursday for a Willshire native.
C. Carl Smith, 81, of New Haven died Sept. 29, 2002, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was employed as an accountant at Navistar for 44 years and was a member of First Assembly of God Christian Center.
He was born June 24, 1921, in Willshire, the son of the late C. Fred and Bernice Mercer Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Smith of New Haven, one son, Rex Smith of New Haven, and a stepsister, Mary Alice Fritz of Bluffton, Ind.
Burial was held at IOOF Cemetery, New Haven.
Preferred memorials are Christian Appalachia Project, First Assembly of God Christian Center or donor's choice.
CONVOY - Mary F Sheets
Died: Thursday, November 28, 2002
Age: 69
CONVOY - Mary F. Sheets, 69, of Convoy, died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at Lima Manor in Lima.
She was born Feb. 23, 1933 in Champaign County, the daughter of George Neer and Thelma (Tingley) Neer. On Dec. 22, 1956, she married Charles "Ed" Sheets, who preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Sheets was a choral director at Crestview High School for 32 years. She was also a church choir director at St. Paul's United Church in Christ for over 30 years.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church in Christ, Van Wert. She also attended the Oneco United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Fla. She was president of Women's Fellowship; Order of Eastern Star #68 of which she was past worthy matron and grand deputy in Ohio; assistant director of Sweet Adelines in Fort Wayne, Ind.; a member of Convoy Garden Club; Wren Ohio Historical Society; and music director of Harmony Notes in Bradenton.
Survivors include a son, D'Wight E. (Michelle) Sheets of Willshire; a daughter, Marilyn (Michael) Frueh of Lima; and six grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Jeffrey C. and a sister Frieda Geuy.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Van Wert, with the Rev. Jerry Flueckiger officiating. Burial will be in Evangelical Protestant Cemetery next to the church, Van Wert.
Calling hours are noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, Ind. and 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church prior to services. Eastern Star service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to St. Paul's Music Fund or St. Rita's Hospice Care.
SCOTT - Matthew Ray 'Matt' Glass
Died: Wednesday, November 27, 2002
Age: 5
SCOTT - Matthew Ray "Matt" Glass, 5, of Scott, died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Parkview Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind., of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born April 10, 1997, in Lima, the son of Bryon A. Glass and Nicole S. (Davis) Glass.
Matt was a kindergarten student at Grover Hill Elementary School, Wayne Trace School District, Grover Hill.
Survivors include a sister, Macey Charlene Glass at home; paternal grandparents, Dennis "Tiny" and Ruth Ann Glass of Scott; maternal grandparents, Lisa and Mike Learned and Bob and Jean Davis, all of Van Wert; paternal great-grandmother, Estella Gilroy of Van Wert; maternal great-grandparents, Dewey C. and Leah A. Shaw and Richard and Betty Learned, all of Van Wert, James and Norma Detterer of Bellefontaine, Robert and Lois Bollenbaugh of Ohio City and Thomas and Donna Davis of Kenton, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, W. Ray and Betty J. Glass and Everet H. Gilroy and Isabelle Morris, and a sister, Margery Elizabeth Elizabeth Glass, who died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in the same auto accident.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Friends Church, Van Wert, the Revs. Neil Hammons and John Perkins officiating. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery, Scott.
Calling hours are 1:30-9 p.m. today at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to time of service Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a family medical expense fund.
PAULDING - Michael Dempsey
Died: Tuesday, November 26, 2002
Age: 50
PAULDING - Michael Dempsey, 50, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was born Feb. 20, 1952, in Defiance, the son of Richard Dempsey and the late Clara Fay (Goldsberry) Dempsey. On July 31, 1971, he married Teresa R. Free, who survives.
Mr. Dempsey had worked at B.F. Goodrich-Uniroyal for 28 years, retiring in 1999. He was a former member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Fort Wayne.

Daughter - Angie (Todd) Wilhelm of Paulding
Brother - Dennis (Pam) Dempsey of Paulding
Four grandchildren also survive.
Private family services will be held at 2 p.m. today. Burial will be at a later date.
There will be no visitation.
Arrangements were handled by Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.
DELPHOS - Mildred Prentice
Died: Tuesday, November 26, 2002
Age: 97
DELPHOS - Mildred Prentice, 97, died at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Laurels of Defiance.
She was born Aug. 2, 1905, in Delphos, the daughter of the late Fred B. Birkmeier and Caroline Scharf.
On Aug. 20, 1938, she married George "Jack" Prentice, who preceded her in death in 1962.
Mrs. Prentice retired from the American Red Cross.

Sister - Rita Gremling of Defiance
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph J. and Carl Birkmeier.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
