Died: Tuesday, December 17, 2002
Age: 81

Dorothy M. Wood, 81, of Payne died on Tuesday, December 17 at Paulding County Hospital, Paulding at 7:38 p.m., two and one half hours after a two-vehicle crash on Ohio 49, three miles south of Payne. She was born on March 19, 1921 in Payne, the daughter of Homer and Gladys Landrum Price. She was married to Forest, who died in 1979. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Donald Wood, St. Clairsville, Ohio, Allan Wood, Delaware, Ohio, one daughter, Carole Overmyer, Payne, one sister, June Rager, Payne. She was a member of the Payne Church of Christ.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Payne Church of Christ with Richard Phelan officiating. Calling is after 4 p.m. Friday at Slade Funeral Home, Payne. Burial will be at Lehman Cemetery, Payne. Preferred memorials are to the Church or Salvation Army.

Ida E Bowen
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 88

Ida E. Bowen, 88, of  Jackson Street in Wren, died at 2:35 p.m. Monday, December 16, 2002, at VanCrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.

She was born December 11, 1914, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Emma (Feigert) and David Schaadt. On January 4, 1936, she married Herman Gayle Bowen, who preceded her in death on January 2, 1999.

She is survived by four sons, Robert (Lucy) Bowen of Van Wert, Stephen (Jane) Bowen of Rockford and Richard (Jill) Bowen and Frank (Cheryl) Bowen, both of Ohio City; a sister, Esther Beldon of Van Wert, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren, Richard A. Bowen II and Krista J. Bowen are deceased.

Mrs. Bowen was a nurse's aide at Van Wert County Hospital and head of housekeeping at Holiday Inn in Van Wert. She was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church and the Gleaner's Sunday School Class. She was a 1933 graduate of Wren High School and a member of the Wren Historical Society.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 19, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. Raymond E. Feeck officiating. Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Wren EMS.

Carl D Watson
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 60

Carl D. Watson, 60, of 924 Haley St., Van Wert, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, December 16, 2002 at his residence.

He was born March 31, 1942, in Van Wert, the son of the late Erma (Utterback) and Fred H. Watson. On July 30, 1966, he married Louise E. (Elzey) Watson, who survives. Other survivors include a son, Michael "Mike" Watson of Cincinnati, two brothers, Richard Watson of Middle Point and Glenn Watson of Boston, Mass; three sisters, Pansy (Everett) Cundiff of New Lebanon, Nancy (Al) Hamilton of Dallas, Texas and Judy Mitteer of Toledo. Two brothers, Charles Watson and Robert Watson are deceased.

Mr. Watson retired in 1997 after 32 years as a laborer for General Electric in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

He was a veteran of the Cuba Missile Crisis as a member of the U.S. Navy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 19, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, the Rev. Neil Hammons officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will take place in the Convoy IOOF cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Van Wert Area United Way Tornado Relief Fund. military graveside services will be conducted by the Van Wert American Legion and the Van Wert Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ruth J. Hammond
Died: Sunday, December 15, 2002
Age: 86

Ruth J. Hammond, 86, formerly of Van Wert, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the San Juan Rehabilitation and Care Center in Anacortes.

Ruth was born July 31, 1916, in Van Wert County, a daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Martin) Terry. On July 18, 1948, she married Robert E. Hammond, who proceeded her in death on June 13, 1976.

In October of 1998, Ruth moved to Anacortes to be closer to her family.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Lively Lutherans Club, the Women's Circle of the Church, a member of the American Business Women's Association Peony Chapter and the Van Wert American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Terry L. Hammond of Anacortes; a daughter, Judy K. Gaede (Johnson) of Vernal, Utah; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank everyone at the San Juan Rehabilitation and Care Center for the wonderful care Ruth received.

There will be a memorial service in Anacortes for family and friends. She will be returned to Van Wert, Ohio, for a celebration of her life and burial at Woodland Cemetery.

David J Beck
Died: Saturday, December 14, 2002
Age: 44

David J. Beck, 44, of Van Wert, died at 6:50 p.m. Saturday, December 14, 2002 at his residence.

He was born Nov. 30, 1958, in Van Wert, the son of Gerald Cooper, who survives in Van Wert and the late Betty (Hartman) Cooper. His fiancee Julane Fuerst survives in Van Wert.

Mr. Beck had been employed at Huffy Bicycle in Celina then at Kennedy Manufacturing in Van Wert and most recently at Eaton in Van Wert.

He was a member of Trinity Friends Church in Van Wert. He was also a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert and Vice President of the Sons of the Legion. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Delphos. Mr. Beck was a long time avid camper at Huggy Bear Campground in Middle Point.

Other survivors include two sons, David Beck of Delphos and Christopher Beck of Venedocia; two daughters, Stephanie Beck of Venedocia and Rachel Albright of Effingham, Ill.; two brothers, Lloyd Smith of Camden, Mich. and Bobby Smith of Michigan; and a grandson, Austin Albright.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Gerald Baker officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Childrens College Fund.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS
Died: Saturday, December 14, 2002

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. - Dolina M. "Dolly" Long Pinnow, 54, of Chicago Heights, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at St. James Hospital Hospice.

Mrs. Pinnow was a registered nurse at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights for over 20 years. She was a member of the Chicago Heights Historical Preservation Committee and worked for Bloom Township as a nurse for senior citizens.

Mrs. Pinnow is survived by her husband, Robert F. Pinnow Jr.; two children, Catrina Ann (Doug) Brucato of Chicago Heights and Joseph D. (Hilary) Lobue of Colorado; and grandchildren, Olivia Angelina and Dominic Joseph Brucato; her mother, Margaret "Peggy" Long of Middle Point; three brothers, Paul "Bub" (Linda) Long of Atoka, Tenn., Randy Long of Van Wert and Doug (Karen) Long of Gomer; four sisters, Linda Heckert of Delphos, Debbie (Ralph) Jessee and Brenda (Greg) Hesseling, both of Middle Point, and Darlene (Roy) Perry of Van Wert; 20 nieces and nephews and 16 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Long and a sister, Madina Marie Long.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Dec. 18 at St. Rocco Oratory in Chicago Heights and burial was in the Interment Assumption Cemetery, Glenwood, Ill.

Henry S. Rodriguez
Died: Friday, March 21, 2003
Age: 67

CELINA - Henry S. Rodriguez, 67, of Celina died at 8:28 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at Community Hospital, Coldwater.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Celina.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina.

Louis C. Scherger
Died: Friday, March 21, 2003
Age: 83

Louis C. Scherger, 83, of Delphos died at 6:40 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center of Delphos.

He was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Delphos, the son of the late Thomas G. and Flora (Wulfhorst) Scherger. On Sept. 4, 1943, in Delphos, he married Rosemary A. Metzner, who survives.

Mr. Scherger had been part owner and vice president and president of Delphos Bending Co., then retired from Van Wert County Health & Human Services. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos; Knights of Columbus Council 1362, Delphos; a charter member and past president of the Delphos Rotary Club; a member of BPOE, Lima; past president and member of the Delphos City School Board for 34 years; a member of St. Vincent dePaul Society, board member of Arnold C. Dienstberger Foundation; Cub Scout leader; past president of St. John's Parish Council; lector, cantor, choir member and first lay distributor at St. John's Church and very active in the Delphos community.

Survivors include three sons, John C. (Sheri) Scherger of Kokomo, Ind., Dr. James L. (Carol) Scherger of Sandusky and Robert C. (Polly) Scherger of Wapakoneta; two daughters, Susan (Notre Dame Sr. Louise) Scherger of Delphos and Dr. Mary Elizabeth (Ray) Bonhomme of Melbourne, Fla.; one sister, Betty Kundert of Delphos, and six grandchildren, Matthew Scherger, Allison (Patrick) O'Donnell, Carrie Scherger, Jay Scherger, Rachel Scherger and Hannah Scherger.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Scherger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Delphos.

Calling hours are 1-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Orians Funeral Home, Delphos, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday followed by a parish wake at 8 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Parish Foundation, Sisters of Notre Dame, St. Rita's Hospice or Arnold C. Dienstberger Foundation.

M. Jolayne Bogart
Died: Thursday, March 20, 2003
Age: 65

M. Jolayne Bogart, 65, of Van Wert died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 14, 1938, in Cincinnati, the daughter of the late Gordon F. and Gladys L. (Filder) Westhaus.

Mrs. Bogart had been working as the manager of Laudick's Jewelry Store in Celina. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert.

Survivors include two sons, Tim (Stacey) Bogart of Carlton, Ore., and David (Lisa) Bogart of West Lake; three daughters, Deb (Steve) Laudick and Mary (Damon) Yackey, both of Van Wert, and Linda (Mike) Kennaw of Lynden, Wash.; three brothers, Harry (Carol) Westhaus of Livonia, Mich., William (Diana) Westhaus of Ann Arbor, Mich., and John (Arleen) Westhaus of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; 18 grandchildren, Emylee, Isaac, Christina, Liliana, Avery, Jack, Jolie and Maislin Bogart, Ben (Kimberly), Kristy, Nathan, Katie and Cameron Laudick, Levi, Kaitlyn Jolayne and Kyle Kennaw, and Rylan and Hannah Yackey, and one great-granddaughter, Larissa Laudick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home where a parish rosary service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Preferred memorials are Community Health Professionals Hospice program, St. Mary's Catholic School Endowment Fund or donor's choice.

Frank A. Mowery
Died: Thursday, March 20, 2003
Age: 79

Frank A. Mowery, 79, of Spencerville died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville.

He was born April 11, 1923, in Ada, the son of the late Clifford and Kathryn (Thompson) Mowery. On Dec. 23, 1968, he married Juanita I. Miller, who survives.

Mr. Mowery, a factory worker, retired from S&S Products Co. in Lima with 30 years of service. In the 1940s and 1950s, he worked as a rancher in Colorado, training horses.

Other survivors include:

Sons -- Charles (Sherri Cook) Mowery of Delphos, James (Rebecca) Robey of Kossuth, Mark (Sharon) Robey and Larry (Linda) Hilyard, both of Spencerville, Ernest Robey of Lima and Walter Dean Hilyard of Mountain View, Mo.; four daughters, Susan Tidwell and Martha Robey, both of Spencerville, Tamara (James) Sanders of Delphos and Sheridan Thompson of Lima; one brother, Clarence Mowery of Lima; two sisters, Lillian Hollister of Ada and Elizabeth Guyton of Springfield; 25 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Henry Mowert, and two sisters, Esther DeLong and Kathryn Kahler.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. Burial will be held at a later date in Spencerville Cemetery.

Calling hours are after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Louise H. Snyder
Died: Thursday, March 20, 2003
Age: 90

Louise H. Snyder, 90, of Ohio City died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Woodcrest Nursing Home, Decatur, where she had been a resident since July 9, 2002.

She was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Basking Ridge, N.J., the daughter of the late Harold W. and Hilda H. (Carter) Headley. On June 14, 1941, in Decatur, she married Forest O. Snyder, who preceded her in death on April 12, 1987.

Mrs. Snyder retired from teaching with Crestview Local Schools where she taught English, Home Economics, and elementary education. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her master's degree from Saint Francis College in Fort Wayne, Ind. She was a member of Wren United Brethren in Christ Church and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include two sons, Fred L. Snyder of Ohio City and Robert H. (Colleen) Snyder of Convoy; a brother, Will C. (Bobbie) Headley of Normal, Ill.; one sister, Frances (Peter) Mallett of Milton, Vt.; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Joan Ryan, and one sister, Roberta.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, the Revs. Lee Cook and John Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Calling hours are 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorial is Wren EMS.
