OHIO CITY - Barbara J Gehres
Died: Wednesday, November 20, 2002
Age: 67

OHIO CITY -- Barbara J. Gehres, 67, of Ohio City, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 20, 1935 in Harrison Township in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late John M. Weaver and the late Ada M. (Finkhousen). On June 25, 1955, she married Gary Mac Gehres, who survives.

Mrs. Gehres worked at Lincoln Life Insurance in Fort Wayne, Ind., Central Mutual Insurance Company in Van Wert and retired from Crestview School in Convoy after 25 years.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Harrison Township and Women's Guild.

Other survivors include a son, Kevin M. (Sharon) Gehres of Ohio City; two daughters, Kimberly (Bill) Clifton of Van Wert and Kelly (Scott) Rostorfer of Venedocia; three brothers Donald L. (Marvene) Weaver, Paul R. (Theresa) Weaver both of Convoy and Bill (Marlene) Weaver of Ohio City; four sisters, Phyllis (Gerald) Ulman, Mary Etta (Arthur) Heller and Norma Feasel all of Decatur, Ind. and Cleva Myers of Convoy; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Sara, Alisha, Abbigail, Allyson, Alex, and Corey and a great-grandson, Adrine.

She was preceded in death by three brothers John R. Weaver, Glen Weaver and Tom Weaver and three sisters, Arlene Zinn, Helen Schindler and Alma Weaver.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Harrison Township, the Rev. Jerry Flueckiger officiating. Burial will be in Evangelical Protestant Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Preferred memorials are to St. Paul's U.C.C. or Community Health Professionals - Hospice.

SPENCERVILLE - Howard Max "Bazz" Brooks
Died: Tuesday, November 19, 2002
Age: 81

SPENCERVILLE - Howard Max "Bazz" Brooks, 81, of Spencerville, died at 8:24 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at his residence following and extended illness.

He was born Aug. 31, 1921 in Amanda Township, Allen County, the son of Howard and Ethel (Stout) Brooks. On June 26, 1954, he married Betty June Potts, who survives.

Mr. Brooks retired in 1978 after 20 years as a stock handler at the Lima Ford Engine Plant. He served in the Army during World War II in Saipan and the Asiatic Pacific Theater from 1942 until 1946.

Other survivors include a son, Randall J. Brooks of Spencerville; and a brother, Howard Brooks of Delphos.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Harold Glen Brooks; and a sister, Ruth Marie Wilkins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. Oran L. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Spencerville Cemetery where grave side military rites will be conducted.

Calling hours are from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

FORT L. WAYNE
Died: Wednesday, March 5, 2003

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Dorothy L. Burch, 89, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Fostoria, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Parkview Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

She was born April 23, 1913, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late William and Alice (Pettiford) Brown. On Oct. 31, 1931, she married Jethro Burch, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Burch retired from General Electric, Tiffin, with over 25 years of service. She was also a homemaker.

A member of Bethel Baptist Church in Fostoria, she was a former Fostoria Branch president, Ohio State president and National Board member of the NAACP. She was the first member of the NAACP Regional Hall of Fame, a member of Board of the African-American National Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio, which also houses a doll with her image. She was very active in the Civil Rights Movement, former president of the Wood, Seneca, Ottawa and Sandusky County Head Start Board. She was a former chief steward, vice president and negotiator for the International United Electrical Workers Union.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Long of Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., Betty Ann Garnes of Findlay, Jethro (Geraline) Burch of Springfield, Lela Crawford of Toledo, Lois Burch of Youngstown, Carolyn  Jones of Fort Wayne, Ind., Catherine Burch of Fort Wayne and Deborah (Phillip) Weiker of Sylvania; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters and one stepson, Frederick Burch.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenbriar Cemetery, rural Van Wert County.

Calling hours are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Middle Run Baptist Church, Xenia.

CELINA - Mildred Delores Delores Grimm
Died: Tuesday, March 4, 2003
Age: 74

CELINA - Mildred Delores Grimm, 74, of Celina died at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Jay County, Ind., the daughter of the late Jessie Albert and Ethel May (Cox) Bailey. On Jan. 14, 1950, she married Samuel L. Grimm, who preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1986.

Mrs. Grimm was a homemaker.

Survivors include:

Daughters -- Linda (Dale) Boroff of Ohio City and Sandy (Charlie) Bruggeman, Bianka (James) Jenkins and Roberta (Monte) Diegel, all of Celina

Brothers -- Harold Bailey of Geneva, Ind., Jim Bailey of Marion, Ind., and Edward Bailey and Robert L. Bailey, both of Portland, Ind.

Sister -- Irma Young of Greenville

Thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy K. Huffman, who died Dec. 17, 1998; eight brothers, Joseph, Kenneth, Melvin, Orville, Irvin Bailey and three other brothers, and two sisters, Ruth Ward and Nellie Shaffer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Richard VanHorn officiating. Burial will be in Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.

Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. today and an hour prior to service time Friday at the funeral home.

DELPHOS - Margaret Ellen Ellen Picker
Died: Tuesday, March 4, 2003
Age: 74

DELPHOS -- Margaret Ellen Picker, 74, of Delphos died at 2:17 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.

She was born Feb. 1, 1929, in Delphos, the daughter of the late Adam and Opal (Lucas) May. On Nov. 9, 1946, she married Carl R. "Duke" Picker, who preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1988.

Mrs. Picker worked at Scherger Monument and as a hostess at McDonalds in Delphos.

Survivors include:

Sons -- Alan J. Picker of Delphos and Carl (Karen) Picker Jr. of Sidney

Daughters -- Carla (Bob) Beckmann and Cheryl (Rod) Maloney, both of Elida, Kathy (Ron) Reindel of Delphos and Debra (Larry) Lee of Fort Jennings

Nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary B. King, and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Harter & Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, the Rev. Chris Vasko officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. to time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Helen L. Green
Died: Sunday, March 2, 2003
Age: 83

Helen L. Green, 83, of Van Wert died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Earl J. and Norma R. (Waltz) Sherburn. On Aug. 25, 1940, she married Robert G. Green, who preceded her in death on March 22, 1984.

Mrs. Green was a homemaker and former beautician. A member of Calvary Evangelical Church, she was also a member of Buckeye Belles Home Extension Club, Convoy American Legion Auxiliary, Martha Circle of the church, Lady Board of Managers of Van Wert County Hospital, Golden Classics of Convoy and a former member of Twig I.

Survivors include two sons, Robert M. (Susan) Green of Easley, S.C., and Bradley J. (Jo) Green of Van Wert; two daughters, Claudia (David) McGhee of Van Wert and Cynthia (Merl) Wortman of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one sister, Dorothy Kaduk of Van Wert; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Sherburn, and three sisters, Kathryn Bauman, Opal Dellinger and Doris Sherburn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, the Rev. Raymond Feeck officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorial is the church.

Samantha E. Mauller
Died: Sunday, March 2, 2003
Age: 92

Samantha E. Mauller, 92, a former longtime resident of Adams County, Ind., died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Paulding County, the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Esther (Edds) Mason. On Sept. 10, 1928, she married Irwin C. Mauller, who preceded her in death on March 28, 1995.

Mrs. Mauller, a homemaker, attended Calvary Evangelical Church in Van Wert and had attended United Brethren in Christ Church in Decatur, Ind., for many years.

Survivors include three daughters, Reta (Gerald) Ashbaugh and Joan (Elmer) Giessler, both of Van Wert, and Pamela (Larry) Rich of Carmel, Ind.; two sisters, Catherine Baer of Van Wert and Bertha McConnehey of Fort Wayne, Ind.; eight grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Archie, William and Charles Mason, and two sisters, Margie Laurey and Pauline Shauver.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, the Rev. James Sturgeon officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery, Decatur.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Decatur United Brethren in Christ Church, Calvary Evangelical Church in Van Wert or donor's choice.
