Marlene K. Cooney 12/18/2005

Marlene K. Cooney, age 63 of Cardington, Ohio died on December 18, 2005 after a 10 month battle with cancer. She was born April 2, 1942 in Marion to Charles H. and Ruth Ella (Shrock) Pollock. Her father is deceased and her mother survives in Mount Gilead.

On December 24, 1960 at Salem United Methodist Church she married John V. Cooney III who survives in Cardington.

Survivors also include sons, John V. Cooney IV of Marion, Michael L. Cooney and his fiancé, Teresa Matthews of Bucyrus, Jeffrey Allen Cooney of Cardington; grandsons, Kyle Brandon Cooney of Winfield, WV, Ryan Michael Cooney of Marion; 2 step-grandchildren, Brent Allen and Ryan Brandon Matthews of Bucyrus and a sister, Ruth Mahaffey of Mount Gilead.

Marlene graduated from Cardington HS in 1960. She had worked as Director of Morrow County Seniors on Center for the past 28 years. She was a member of the Scarlet Twig at Morrow County Hospital, Business Women's Association of Morrow County and volunteered for Morrow County Hospital. Marlene was an avid camper and loved to travel. She is survived by many of her extended family, "the campers". She loved gardening and flowers.

In addition to her father, Marlene was preceded in death by an infant sister, Patricia Ann Pollock.

Friends may call Tuesday, December 20, 2005 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00 to 8:00PM at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 11:00AM. Reverend John  Jackson will officiate and burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Morrow County Seniors on Center in her honor.

Charles Caudill 12/18/2005

Charles "Charlie" Caudill, age 61, of Park Avenue Cardington, died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the Dayton VA Medical Center. Friends may call from 9:00AM to 11:00AM on Friday, December 23, 2005 at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington. Funeral services will follow at 11:00AM. Pastor Oakie Evans will officiate and burial will be in Bloomfield Cemetery.

Betty Jo Axthelm 12/17/2005

Betty Jo Axthelm, age 69, of Ashley Road Cardington, died Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Marion General Hospital. She was born March 3, 1936 in Westfield Township to the late Guy and Rebecca (Edwards) Crump.

Betty Jo graduated in 1954 from Elm Valley HS. She was a member of West Oxford Methodist church, a Hospice Volunteer, the secretary elect of the Morrow County Antique Tractor Club, a former secretary of Delaware County Antique Tractor Club, a member of the Marion County Steam and Gas Engine Society and the Ashley-Elm Valley Alumni Association.

She was married on December 25, 1953 in Ashley, Ohio to Edward F. Axthelm who survives in Cardington.

Survivors include her sons Jon and Beverly Axthelm and Jay Axthelm of Cardington, 3 grandchildren, Jonda, Jayson, and Jeffrey; sisters, Ada Logue of Ashville, Martha Adams of Ashley, brother-in-law, Fred Axthelm, of Indianapolis, sister-in-law, Mary Jo Axthelm of Waldo and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Jo was preceded in death by a son, Jim Axthelm, a baby daughter, and a brother-in-law, Roger Axthelm.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 from 2:00 and 4:00PM and from 6:00 to 8:00PM. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00AM at the funeral home. Pastor Rob Musick will officiate and burial will follow in Glendale Union Cemetery.

Hayley N. Compton 12/13/2005

Hayley N. Compton, age 18 months, died at Grady Memorial Hospital Tuesday, December 13, 2005. She was born in Columbus, Ohio June 11, 2004 to Dean Compton and Jennie Bartram.

In addition to her parents Hayley is survived by maternal grandparents, Brenda Cain of Sunbury and Randy Bartram of Marengo; paternal grandparents, Karen and Lonnie Starcher of Delaware; Maternal great-grandparents, Jennie and Don Cain of Cardington and Gladys and Homer Bartram of Marengo; paternal great-grandparents, Laura and Jerry Parker of Delaware; 2 uncles, Randy Bartram, Jr. and Kelby Compton and 1 aunt Brandi & Mike Carroll.

Friends may call Friday, December 16, 2005 from 11:00AM until 2:30PM at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington. Funeral services will follow at 2:30PM with Reverend Swanger of River Community Church officiating. Burial will follow in Glendale Union Cemetery.

Doris R. Wilson 12/12/2005

Doris R. Wilson, age 90, formerly of Nichols Street in Cardington died Monday morning, December 12, 2005 in the Extended Care Unit of Morrow County Hospital. Doris was born February 17, 1915 in Marion County to the late John L. and Stella B. (Murray) George.

Doris was a graduate of Marion Harding High School. She moved to Morrow County in the 1940's. A long time member of First United Methodist Church of Cardington, she was dedicated to her family, gardening, baking, spoiling her grandchildren, and her beloved Boston Terriers. She was employed for many years in the cafeteria at Cardington-Lincoln Schools, Lutheran Memorial Camp and was active in United Methodist Women, 4-H, Friends of Hope Line, and supported and encouraged her children and grandchildren in each of their endeavors.

On March 2, 1945 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Mount Gilead Doris married Charles F. Wilson. He preceded her in death June 25, 1982.

Survivors include 4 daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Dallas Campbell of Morral, Rebecca and Jim Patterson of Mount Gilead, Judy Fridley of Cardington and Rosemary and Darrell Levings of Mount Gilead; 9 grandchildren, Melissa Berridge, Tami Zipprer, Rich Curts, Eric Curts, Michael Patterson, Brian Patterson, Matthew Fridley, Angie Widman and Jeff Levings; 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sister-in-laws, Freda George and Jane George and many nieces and nephews.

Doris was also preceded in death by a sister, Georgia Vance and two brothers, Roy and Raymond George, brother-in-law, Clair Vance and sons-in-laws, Richard Curts and Richard Fridley.

Friends may call at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 14, 2005 where funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, December 15, 2005. Reverend Donald Lockwood will officiate and burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are requested to consider First United Methodist Church or the Activity Fund at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Unit in care of the funeral home.

Lucille B. Johnstone 11/19/2005

Lucille B. Johnstone, age 90, of East Main Street in Cardington died peacefully at her home on Saturday Nov. 19, 2005. She was born in Cardington on Aug. 10, 1915 to the late Cline and Alma B. ( Curl ) Sherman.

Lucille was a 1933 graduate of Cardington High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Violet Twig at the Morrow County Hospital. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star and had received from the American Red Cross her pin for donating two gallons of blood during her life.

On June 12, 1937 in Greenup, Kentucky Lucille married William C. Johnstone and he preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1993 after 54 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold "Lefty" and Frank "Hank" Sherman and a sister Lois McClaren.

Survivors include her son Gary Johnstone of Mount Gilead, a granddaughter Jennifer Johnstone, and a Great-grandson  Taylor Johnstone both of Cardington.

Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday Nov. 22, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Pastor John  Jackson will officiate and the burial will be in the Glendale Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County thru the Funeral Home.

Albert E. Denton 11/16/2005

Albert E. Denton, age 87, formerly of East Main Street, Cardington, died Wednesday evening, November 16, 2005 surrounded by his children at Bennington Glenn Nursing Center. He was born January 4, 1918 in Morrow County to the late Albert E. and Clara Belle (Ruggles) Denton.

Al graduated from Cardington High School in 1935 and served in the US Army infantry division during World War II, and was a member of the Jenkins-Vaughan American Legion Post # 97 for over 50 years. He was an avid harness horse racing fan. Al was also a member of the Cardington First United Methodist Church. However, he will best be remembered as the owner of Al's Restaurant in Cardington for 55 years from 1946 to 2002. This was the place of choice for families and business people alike when they wanted a home-style meal, including those special recipe dinner rolls, a cup of coffee or a piece of melt in your mouth pie.

On July 17, 1954 he married the former Thelma Bonham and she preceded him in death on May 16, 1979.

Survivors include three daughters and two son-in-laws, Shirley and James Garrison and Ronda and Ronald Coleman of Cardington and Sondra Price of Delaware; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren;, 1 step great-great grandchild; and a sister, Dorothy Miley of Marion.

In addition to his parents and wife, Al was preceded in death by infant son, Roger D. Denton, infant daughter, Debbie Denton, 1 grandson, 5 brothers, 4 sisters, and his special friend of 24 years, Eileen Wagner.

Friends may call Sunday, November 20, 2005 from 2:00PM to 8:00PM at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington where funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00AM. Reverend John  Jackson will officiate and burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Al's family, Monty Coleman, Tom Garrison, Jeff Wright, Nate Vaught, Chris Pearl and John Walton.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are requested to consider First United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes. Association in care of the funeral home.
