Age: 58

MIDDLE POINT - Robert L. Phillips, 58, of Middle Point died at 8:44 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born March 30, 1944, in Yellow Mountain, Ky., the son of the late Charles and Parrot (Sparkman) Phillips. On Jan. 17, 1966, in Lima, he married Janet K. Stant, who survives.

Mr. Phillips was a retired automotive mechanic.

Survivors include:

Sons - Jason "Jake" (Hollie) Phillips of Ohio City and Anthony (Vonda) Phillips of Hindman, Ky.

Daughters - Sandra (Keith) Hill of Middle Point and Phyllis (Gary) Hoskins of Pineville, Ky.

Brother - Marion Sawyer of Lima

Sisters - Bonnie Smith of Decoy, Ky., and Dorothy Oliver of Sarasota, Fla.

Twelve grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Phillips; six brothers, William Abe, Truman, Lee, Edward, Earl and Owen Phillips; five sisters, Hattie Hamilton, Bertha Hatfield, Betty Lee Chaffins, Genadith Watkins and Emmajean Phillips, and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, the Rev. Neil Hammons officiating. Burial will be private.

Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

OHIO CITY - Mary Ann McHugh
Died: Friday, January 24, 2003
Age: 36

OHIO CITY - Mary Ann McHugh, 36, of rural Ohio City died at 6:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in a house fire at her residence in Harrison Township.

She was born Sept. 2, 1966, in Van Wert, the daughter of Richard A. McHugh of Van Wert and Carolyn Sue (Pierce) McHugh Priddy of rural Ohio City.

Ms. McHugh was employed at CME Mitsuba Automotive, Monroeville, Ind., and had worked at Orchard Tree Restaurant in Van Wert for 15 years. She was a 1985 graduate of Ohio City-Liberty High School.

Survivors include her stepfather, Max L. Priddy of rural Ohio City; her stepmother, Marilyn R. McHugh of Van Wert; a grandfather, Edwin J. Pierce of rural Convoy; a grandmother, Luella (Woods) McHugh of Ohio City; one sister, Diana (Darrell E.) Swander of Ohio City; five nieces and nephews, Donald Swander, Stephanie Swander and Michelle Swander, all of Ohio City, and Travis (Meghan) Swander and B.J. Swander, both of Convoy, and a cousin, Mike Pierce of Indianapolis, Ind.

Her brother, Barry McHugh, perished in the same fire.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Chuck Glover of Kingsley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours are 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Wren, Ohio City, Convoy or Willshire fire departments.

OHIO CITY - Barry Allen McHugh
Died: Friday, January 24, 2003
Age: 32

OHIO CITY - Barry Allen McHugh, 32, of rural Ohio City died at 6:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in a house fire at his residence in Harrison Township.

He was born Aug. 2, 1970, in Van Wert, the son of Richard A. McHugh of Van Wert and Carolyn Sue (Pierce) McHugh Priddy of rural Ohio City.

Mr. McHugh, a 1989 graduate of Crestview High School, had worked at Pick 'N Save supermarket in Van Wert.

COLDWATER - Dale B. Rank
Died: Thursday, January 23, 2003
Age: 82

COLDWATER, Mich. - Dale B. Rank, 82, of Coldwater died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Coldwater Community Health Center.

He was born March 26, 1920, in Van Wert, the son of the late William and Orah (Knittle) Rank. On June 1, 1941, he married Elenora Linton, who survives.

Mr. Rank was a dairy farmer in St. Joseph County, Mich., for many years. He was also employed at the Sturgis Community Schools.

Other survivors include:

Son - David (Nancy) Rank of Nottowa, Mich.

Daughters - Ruth Ann (Ted) Sailor of Constantine, Mich., Barbara (Paul) Runyon of Fort Wayne, Ind., Alice (Gary) Graham of Osseo and Nancy (Steve) Runyon of Camden

Brother - Owen (Mary) Rank of Van Wert

Sister - J. Marie (Billy) Lewis of Stanton, Calif.

Twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at East Ovid United Brethren Church, Coldwater. Burial will be in Lester Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Arrangements were handled by Kurtz Funeral Home, Hillsdale, Mich., and Dutcher Funeral Home.

INDIANAPOLIS
Died: Friday, September 27, 2002

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Forest Allen Custer, 89, of Indianapolis, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002.

He married Doris Evelyn Pearson, who survives.

Mr. Custer was a district sales manager for Perfect Circle Corp. for over 22 years, retiring in 1970. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Brother - Doyt Custer

Three grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (Indiana time) today at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, Indianapolis. Burial will be in Washington Park East.

Calling hours are noon to time of service (Indiana time) today at the funeral home.

MIDDLE POINT - H. David Stephenson Jr
Died: Friday, September 27, 2002
Age: 55

MIDDLE POINT - H. David Stephenson Jr., 55, of Middle Point died at 3:51 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital.

He was born Aug. 9, 1947, in Charlevoix, Mich., the son of Ruth (Slate) Stephenson of Middle Point and the late Harold D. Stephenson Sr.

Mr. Stephenson was a member of the Salvation Army in Van Wert and enjoyed gardening, lawn work and loved nature.

Survivors include:

Brother - Harry (Chris) Stephenson of Middle Point

Two nephews, two great-nephews and a great-niece also survive.

A celebration of life will be held at noon Friday, Oct. 4 at the Salvation Army, Van Wert, Captain Pat Ward officiating.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made out to the Salvation Army.

Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Marie Schneider
Died: Friday, September 27, 2002
Age: 70

Ruth Marie Schneider, 70, of Van Wert died at 6:34 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.

She was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Paulding, the daughter of the late Raymond and Hazel Marie (Copsey) Phlipot. She married Fred Schneider, who preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 2001.

Mrs. Schneider was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, and its Altar Rosary Society.

She was very active in the church and worked for many years for the St. Mary's School bingo. She also belonged to the Lincolnview Athletic Boosters.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana (James) Ohlrich of Deshler, Joan (Greg) Germann of Van Wert and Rose Marie (Danny) VanWynsberghe of Key West, Fla.; a son, Carl (Lisa) Schneider of Perrysburg; three brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Phlipot, Earl (Jeannie) Phlipot and Jerry (Margaret) Phlipot, all of Paulding; two sisters, Laura Pease of Paulding and Dorothy (Bill) Alt of Gahana; two half sisters, Helen Coil of Traverse City, Mich., and Christine (Roman) Laker of Cecil; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Phlipot of Paulding; nine grandchildren; numerous children she babysat for, and her Pomeranian, "Lady".

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Phlipot and an infant brother, a sister, Mabel Phlipot, and a half brother, Lawrence Phlipot.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph M. Schmelzer officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.

Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. Monday at Brickner Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 8:45 p.m. Monday.
