Mary Elusia Haines
Died: Sunday, December 29, 2002
Age: 86

Mary Elusia Haines, 86, of Van Wert died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

She was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Jessie and DiciaMae (Woods) Krugh. On June 29, 1939, she married Robert Alton Haines, who preceded her in death in 1989.

Mrs. Haines had served as a captain in the Salvation Army. She was a caregiver to children and the elderly, a missionary, an ordained interdenominational minister and a graduate of Northwestern Theological Seminary.

Survivors include her children, Kathleen (Robert Wemple) Wattles-Wemple of Scottsmoor, Fla., MaryLou (Fred) Tuey of Bates City, Mo., Robert Alton "Spike" (Mary Jane) Haines Jr. of Van Wert and Bobbie Ann Belcher of Mountain Rest, S.C., who was a member of the Haines family; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Lloyd "Butch" Hammond, who was also a member of the Haines family; one brother, Walter Max Krugh, and one sister, Helen Hammond.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. William Jeffress officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City.

Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

W. Hayden Felger
Died: Sunday, October 27, 2002
Age: 87

W. Hayden Felger, 87, of Kenton, died Sunday morning, Oct. 27, 2002, at his residence in Kenton.

He was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Middlespoint, the son of the late Lester T. and Edith E. (Gamble) Felger. On June 15, 1946, he married Martha Hohenbrink, who preceded him in death on May 7, 1999.

He is survived by a son, William J. (Marcia) Felger of Kokomo, Ind.; two grandchildren, Allison Cohee of Kokomo, Ind and Shawn (Holly) Cohee of McKinney, Texas ; one great grandson, Quintin Walter and close friend and caregiver Hazel Nichols of Kenton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Bidlack.

Mr. Felger was a railroad agent/operator and retired in 1978. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Navy, was a member of T.C.U. and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Kenton, where he had been a resident since 1968.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Kenton, the Rev. William Faustner officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday. A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Schindewolf Stevens Stout Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dennis P Mowery
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 47

Dennis P. Mowery, 47, of Van Wert, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at Select Specialty Hospital, Columbus.

He was born Jan. 27, 1955 in Coldwater, the son of the late John B.F. Mower and Lorraine (Fowler) Heiland. On May 19, 1990 he married Carol (Roberts) Mowery, who survives in Van Wert.

Other survivors include:

Mother - Lorraine (Fowler) Heiland of Mendon

Step-father - Norman Heiland of Mendon

Step-mother - Shirley Mowery of Florida

Daughters - Rebecca Mowery at home

Brothers - Thomas (Ersilia) Mowery of Van Wert and Stephen Mowery of Nashville, Tenn.

Sister - Teresa (Joseph) Cornett of St. Mary's

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, Deacon Timothy Knepper officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Walter T. "Thad" Simon
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 66

Walter T. "Thad" Simon, 66, of 702 W. Main St. in Van Wert, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at his residence. He was born Nov. 1, 1935 in Defiance, the son of the late Walter T. Simon Sr. and Helen Nusbaum of Sherwood. On Aug. 24, 1957, he married Sandra J. (Rosselet) Simon, who survives in Van Wert.

He is also survived by three daughters, Lisa (Tim) Ellert of Fort Wayne, Ind., Renee (Jesse) Velasquez of Dayton and Jana (David) of Parsons of Boise, Idaho; a brother, Michael (Sandy) Simon of Defiance; three sisters, Mary Hauenstein of Lima, Jane (Leonard) DeWitt of Elkhart, Ind. and Ida (Denver) Hammons of Hamilton, Ind and six grandchildren.

Mr. Simon worked three years as a salesman for Heckman Biscuit Comp in Lima and 21 years as an agent for Western-Southern Life Insurance Company. He retired after 16 years at the Lima Correctional Institute in Lima.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Van Wert. He was also a member of the Van Wert Post of the American Legion, the Van Wert Elks lodge, a graduate of Oakwood High School in 1953, a graduate of the Lima Technical School in law enforcement and corrections and served in the United States Marine Corp from 1954-1957.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Father Joseph Schmelzer and Rev. James Slow officiating. Friends can call from noon to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Angel Foundation and Community Health Professionals in Van Wert.

Mary Cowgill
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 83

Mary Cowgill, 83, a former Van Wert resident, died Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2002 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. Mrs. Cowgill had resided in Tucson for eight years.

She was born April 22, 1919 in Van Wert, the daughter of the late Anna (Hirsch) and John Horther. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Cowgill of Tucson and a son, Roger Cowgill of Tucson, and a cousin, Nora (Paul) Scott of Van Wert.

Mrs. Cowgill had been employed with the Van Wert City Auditors Office for 10 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Wert.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at Brickner Funeral Home, the Rev. James C. Dunaway officiating. Visitation will be held at Brickner Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-6 p.m. Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery.

PAULDING - Amy Mae Patterson
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 93

PAULDING - Amy Mae Patterson, 93, died Thursday evening, Oct. 24, 2002 at the Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was born on Aug. 23, 1909, in Paulding County, Ohio, the daughter of Frederick O. and Amy (Clark) Mosier. On Feb. 28, 1929 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, she married Verl E. "Pat" Patterson, who preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1967.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Paulding United Methodist Church, Paulding, the United Methodist Women, the Bay View Reading Club and Sisters of the Skillet.

She is survived by four daughters: Patricia (Coe) Gordon, and Donna (Ron) Lane, both of Paulding, Beverly (John) Dunstan of Cecil and Carol (William) Parrett of Blue Rock, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Pond of Scott, 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Verl, an infant daughter, Constance Patterson, two grandsons: John Dunstan and Stephen Jones, a great granddaughter, Carol Sue Parrett; three brothers: Clay, Howard and Herb Mosier and three sisters: Dorothy Auman, Vilena Hartsell and Frieda Lee.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jack Berry officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Creek Cemetery, Haviland.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 28 at Den Herder Funeral Home from 2-9 p.m. and from 8-11 a.m. on Tuesday also at the funeral home.

Memorials can be made to the Paulding United Methodist Church in Paulding.

MIDDLE POINT - Danny R Ritchie
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 53

MIDDLE POINT -- Danny R. Ritchie, 53, of Middle Point, died Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2002, of a pedestrian accident near his residence.

He was born June 23, 1949, in Van Wert County, the son of the late Gael R. Ritchie and Mary (Adams) Ritchie, who survives in Rockford.

Mr. Ritchie worked at Thomas Edison Workshop in Van Wert. He played for the Thomas Edison Special Olympics team, was an avid bowler, avid sports enthusiast, cheering for the Lincolnview Lancers, Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Other survivors include two sisters, Lu Anne Metzger and Debbie (Steve) Allen, both of Middle Point; special friend, Cindy Preston; niece, Beckie (Tyler) Holdgreve of Van Wert; two nephews, Jason (Michelle) Allen, and Ben (Kendra) Allen both of Middle Point; an aunt, Lucille Knittle of Van Wert; two uncles, Jack (Alice) Adams of Van Wert and Jim (Sandra) Ritchie of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and six great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday Oct. 27, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Stephen Placke officiating. Burial will be Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point.

Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Thomas Edison Special Olympics or Thomas Edison Workshop.

Doyt E Schaadt
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 69

Doyt E. Schaadt, 69, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Born in Van Wer County, he retired as Manager of Personnel Accounting at General Electric after 38 years of service..

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis A. of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sons, Stephen of Fort Wayne, Ind. and David of Kendallville, Ind.; two brothers, Bob of South Carolina and Paul of Van Wert County, Oh.; one sister, Linda Springer of Ohio City and four grandchildren.

A service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 28 at D.O. McComb & Sons, Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road.

Burial was in Covington Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1417 N. Anthony Blvd., Fort Wayne, Ind. 46805.

DELPHOS - Clara M Vondran
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 86

DELPHOS - Clara M. Vondran, 86, of Delphos died at 12:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002.

She was born, May 29, 1916 in Ottoville, the daughter of Henry Pohl and Lena (Holbein) Pohl. On June 19, 1937, she married Bernard H. Vondran, who preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1993.

Mrs. Vondran was a homemaker.

Survivors include:

Sons - Norman (Nancy) Vondran of Lima, Gerald (Patricia) Vondran of Cincinnati and Robert (Rhonda) Vondran of Marion, Ind.

Daughter - Marilyn Titzer of Newburgh, Ind.

Sister - Margaret Powell of Delphos

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Edward, John, Elmer Pohl and two sisters, Lucille Clark and Dorothy Barnes.

Twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at St. John's Catholic Church, Father Giesige officiating. Burial will be in in St. John's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. today, at Harter & Son Funeral Home, Delphos.
