Gina Derringer found joy amid battle with cancer
Gina Derringer of Anderson Township will be remembered for her joy and courage in the face of the enemy.
For Mrs. Derringer, her 14-year enemy was breast cancer. Instead of running from the disease, "she sort of wore it like a badge," said her sister, Jaye Yorio of Anderson Township. "I think she always felt she was going to win the battle."
Mrs. Derringer, 55, a Mt. Washington native, died Thursday.
She made many friends in recent years through support groups. The groups seemed to help her mostly by providing a chance to cheer and help others, her sister said.
She sent many dozens of birthday cards each year.
"If she knew when your birthday was, you'd get a card," Mrs. Yorio said. "In the last few years, it was people who were sick. Especially with cancer. She was the Hallmark supporter."
A graduate of McNicholas High School, she received a degree in elementary education from the University of Cincinnati and taught two years in the late 1960s at Eastern Hills Elementary School. She later taught religion classes for the Guardian Angels Parish.
She worked more than 25 years as payroll administrator for Derringer Food Services, where her husband, Bill, is president and chief executive officer.
Mrs. Derringer volunteered at Mercy Hospital Anderson and Guardian Angels, and also was involved with Mercy Hospital's cancer support group and the Barrett Center Support Group.
Aside from her husband and sister, survivors include daughters Beth and Amy Derringer, both of Anderson Township.
Services will be 7 p.m. today at Guardian Angels Church. Visitation will be 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave.
Memorial contributions may be made to the McNicholas High School Alumni Scholarship Fund or the Mercy Hospital Anderson Foundation.
