Mirko Nussbaum, physics professor
University of Cincinnati physics professor Mirko Nussbaum, 66, died Tuesday in a private plane crash in rural Highland County, Ohio.
A native of Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia, Mr. Nussbaum was world famous for his work in high-energy particle physics.
Escaping the Nazis as a teen-ager after seeing his father and several relatives killed, he and his mother went to Albania and Italy before arriving in the United States. A brother, Ivan Nusic, also escaped and lives in Mount Bethel, Pa.
One of Nussbaum's most important research achievements came while he was a graduate student, when he helped to discover a new sub-atomic particle know as the "eta" particle.
"This was the start of a long and productive career doing research in high energy particle physics," said Louis Witten, professor emeritus, who was the department head in physics when Nussbaum came to UC.
Nussbaum continued exploring particle physics for the next 30 years as part of the collaborative teams at the world's leading physics research facilities, such as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago and the European Center for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland.
With a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Rutgers University in 1954, Mr. Nussbaum completed his master's degree at the University of Chicago two years later. He earned his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University in 1962. He also worked as a physics instructor at Johns Hopkins University and as a research associate at Columbia University before becoming an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania in 1964. Five years later, he joined UC an associate professor and became a full professor in 1971. He was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1973 for his research accomplishments.
Mr. Nussbaum is survived by his brother, Ivan Nusic, a niece and a nephew; and an aunt in Belgrade.
A memorial service will be held at the UC Faculty Club at 4 p.m. Sunday. Preparations are being made to set up a memorial fund to benefit women and minority physics students, in recognition of Mr. Nussbaum's concern for those groups. Donations may be sent to the Mike Nussbaum Scholarship Fund, in care of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, 425 Walnut St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.
